Sunday’s lineups: Tigers vs. Indians

CoPa 001

Victor Martinez is feeling healthy enough to handle first base in the series finale, a good test for him ahead of the upcoming Interleague series at Arizona. If Martinez can handle first base without much risk to his back, then don’t be surprised if Miguel Cabrera makes a start at third base, according to manager Brad Ausmus. Andrew Romine, meanwhile, gets a start at shortstop.

On the Cleveland side, the Indians threw some extra right-handed hitters against Drew Smyly given the splits, but they can only go so far with that. Several left-handed hitters remain to face a pitcher that has allowed a .315 average and .909 OPS against right-handed batters, compared with .157/.436 from lefties. Ryan Raburn is batting fifth, though, so there’s that.

TIGERS (career numbers off Josh Tomlin)

  5. J.D. Martinez, LF (1-for-3, double, walk, K)
  6. Torii Hunter, RF (3-for-8, double, 2 walks, K)
  7. Nick Castellanos, 3B (2-for-5, 2 doubles, 2 K’s)
  8. Alex Avila, C (2-for-10, 2 HR, 4 K’s)
  9. Andrew Romine, SS (0-for-2, K)

Ok, the Tigers will win today!

From your mouth to the baseball gods ears!

Why is it they have an average record at home and do better on the road? Now Cleveland is only 3 1/2 games behind.

Sorry, 4 1/2. Still not good. Indians nearly caught them last year.

I wanted to ask someone on here last night I was at the game (so I couldnt see how ump was calling balls/strikes) but it appeared a lot of players were having issues. Was it that bad?

went both ways.

Heck, I thought that Cleveland player hit a HR. It hit the yellow line.

I think it has to hit over the line.

No more walks, Drew.

Come on Tigers. Two runs are not enough. Just look at the last 3 games. Now Tomlin may have found his groove.

They just showed Mike and Marion Ilitch at the game. It’s Mr. I’s birthday.
.
Let’s get it going, Tigers!!!!

Last 4 games = 9 runs. They need to break out.

They need to get the bats hot again. That’s for sure.

Funk-itis has really settled in. What’s AJ doing getting cut down at 1st base? Now Miggy comes up first again next inning.

It was a hit and run. Kinsler was out.

No matter. Miggy can’t hit either.

Torii!!!!!!!!!!!

They broke thru that 2-run barrier! Now if Smyly can continue to hold them.

We need more runs.

So feeble at times. VMart limps from 2nd to 3rd base on a single. Many other players would have scored. Avila cannot even get a sac fly. Romine 3 strait strikes.

Really obvious VMart is not 100 % . He runs like my 80 yr old mother-in-law . Any one else scores .

As expected vs the LH heavy lineup, Smyly did what the others couldnt

I want to know why Brad didn’t pinch hit there. Cripes, Davis could have scored, Kelly could play first. I would have pinch hit for Romine.

Is he really going to bring Joe Blow in again? Ruin Mr I’s birthday?

Dan and Jim haven’t mentioned anyone warming up.

OMG, Joe Nathan.

Whether he does fine or not what’s the point in bringing in Nathan he threw a lot of pitches last night and its not a save situation. I seriously question his use of the pen.

Put him back in the fire right away

See? We won.
.
The weren’t very creative producing runs, however.

They

OMG. Like night and day. So is the solution not to give him too much rest? He hadn’t pitched for a week until last night.

Looks like all other teams in division are losing. One more day able to breathe.

He could have put a pinch runner in for Victor and pinch hit for Romine. I just do not understand that at all.

Tigers go west. Have played well on the road. Arizona 19-31 at home but Angels 33-16 at home. They are always tough but that series will be extra difficult.

Mario’s trivia for the day, Going back 100 years, Cleveland has never swept the Tigers in a four game series in Detroit.

They hadn’t won a doubleheader in Detroit since 1966 and I was in attendance that loooong ago day.

Nathan was already warming when it was a 4-1 save situation. No time to get another reliever up even if they wanted to. Joe was one inning away from a “Retire Joe” campaign.

Got the much needed win, but I’m not happy with what I’m seeing so far post ASG.

it was odd to see porcello warming up in the bullpen during nathan’s pitching. i don’t know if i’m alarmed (yipes, the closer situation is grim enough that it’s come to this) or simply relieved that brad has some creative solutions…..
or a mix of both.

Beck:
“He’s still out there throwing. Likely didn’t throw side session just in case. RT @bs09090: @beckjason Any idea why Ricky P went out there?”

He rested more than a week. He needs a tired arm to make his sinker drops more

so is jason saying it didn’t mean anything? i don’t think i’ve ever seen any other starter warm up at the end of a game like that. and even mario & rod seemed to think it was odd.

Yes, Beck. I understand that he skipped the bullpen session just in case. When the game was ending he had to go out and throw

1. Lefty gets the job done. Have another one around for the next Tribe series.
2. Old Man River seems to strike at the most opportune times.
3. Ajax has two more hits and no K’s from the Leadoff.
Kudos to Rookie 1 for a nice bat day. JobaJo got her done. Joe is walking a very thin line, so he better get her done from hereon. Where is Miggy? No hits!
Drew pitched his best start this year. On to the West with a 5.5 game lead.
