Wednesday’s lineups: Miguel Cabrera’s day off

Brad Ausmus had been talking about trying to get Miguel Cabrera a day off, but had been holding off with Victor Martinez unavailable. He has held off no longer, sitting Cabrera for the getaway day against the Dodgers with four games coming up in Kansas City.

Don Kelly, 3-for-8 off Zack Greinke, gets the start at first base. Yes, it’s a small sample size, but let’s be honest: Even if Kelly was 3-for-13 against Greinke, you’d be somewhat surprised. For what it’s worth, Cabrera is 10-for-35 with a double, home run and 11 strikeouts against Greinke.

The Dodgers pull a surprise and use the same lineup they had last night, including Hanley Ramirez at DH.

TIGERS (career numbers against Greinke)

  1. Austin Jackson, CF (1-for-10, K)
  2. Ian Kinsler, 2B (4-for-26, HR, 7 K’s)
  3. Torii Hunter, DH (9-for-33, 2 doubles, 3 HR, walk, 5 K’s)
  4. J.D. Martinez, RF (2-for-10, walk, 2 K’s)
  5. Don Kelly, 1B (3-for-8, 2 K’s)
  6. Nick Castellanos, 3B
  7. Alex Avila, C (3-for-11, 2 walks, 4 K’s)
  8. Eugenio Suarez, SS
  9. Rajai Davis, LF (2-for-11, walk, 3 K’s)

P: Max Scherzer

DODGERS (career numbers off Scherzer)

  1. Dee Gordon, 2B (3-for-8, double, HR)
  2. Yasiel Puig, RF
  3. Hanley Ramirez, DH (0-for-6, 3 K’s)
  4. Adrian Gonzalez, 1B (4-for-20, double, 2 walks, 3 K’s)
  5. Matt Kemp, LF (0-for-18, walk, 5 K’s)
  6. Andre Ethier, CF (6-for-18, double, HR, 2 walks, 3 K’s)
  7. Juan Uribe, 3B (3-for-10, double, K)
  8. A.J. Ellis, C (1-for-3)
  9. Miguel Rojas, SS

P: Zack Greinke

It’s a “pick your spot.” Interleague game plus the fact they won last night. Four big division games in KC. Then the ASG. No rest in sight. Today is it.

anyone else noticed Miggy performs well after rests? For example, when he daughter was born he came back and smashed 1-3 HRs the next game – at least that’s how I remembered it. What is the word on Vmart?

Just saw on Twitter with Fox national and their exclusivity time slot Detroiters will not see Saturdays game until 10.00 on a tape delay. Screw the fans concept I guess.

Jim and Dan here I come!~

Sorry it’s not like Miggy is laying brick or working construction five days a week 8-9 hours a day. I think unless he’s hurting in some way it’s crap.

construction players can be replaced if they get an injury – can’t replace miggy

Come on, Gk……….

Come on……he had a day off Monday he’ll have most of next week off. Sorry with Victor out of lineup its not a luxury I think they can afford unless there is some underlying injury.
Nice play by Rajai and Suarez

eh, i guess thats fair…with Vmart being out

They need to lay off the pity party for tired players. My dad worked in a factory for 45 years until he finally took time off for an operation. In today’s world, people get mandatory overtime 12-16 hr shifts, 7 days a week frequently.
If he needs a day off, fine.

Don kelly baby!

Maybe that triple and slide wore Miggy out. Never thought I’d see a triple from him.

It looks like he was limping in the dugout after the triple, plus the right knee on his pants was ripped. Looked like kind of a awkward slide. Hopefully he isn’t hurt

My guess is his slide last night might be an issue and it is a precaution. I get it that I would be upset if I had tickets for today and did not see him, but I also appreciate a manager not giving away too many secrets if something maybe isn’t really an issue but something they want to keep an eye on for a day. First day off half way through season – it had to happen for him but would have expected it for a road game.

Geez. First HR of the season for the lowest BA in their line-up.

As mcuh as I trust Joba, I think I’da left Max in for 1 more.

Reason being——you could then bring him in for the 9th!!!

get nathan some work!

they want no piece of Donny Kelly Baby. And I don’t blame them.

We need Torii Two-Hop to elevate.
Btw-I am very impressed with Kinsler a dedicated pull hitter seems to be able to hit to the right side to move a man over very well indeed.
As I write—Torii does elevate. Fabulous

The fearsome hitter Don Kelly.

That’s cool. Would be really cool to see Castellanos make them pay

Here we go. Will this be Joe No or Joe Blow?

Thank you, Joe No. 3 up. 3 down. That’s more like the Old Joe.

Nice 2 game sweep!

1. Lead from start to finish.
2. Won without the M&M’s
3. Setup and Closeout were six up and down with 4K’s.

Kudos to Max for a stellar performance. Donnie Baby made good contributions today.
AJax had a nice day too. Pitching is and always has been the key for us. Think about it; if JV wins his last start, he will be a nine game winner, having pitched like garbage for most of the year. We still have to get Drw settled in as a Starter who can routinely go 6 or 7 each start. Great play from Eugenio to get Ramirez at third. Nice two games. On to KC with a split as the minimum goal. Hurry back Victor.

In the end, it’s a 6-3 homestand, including 5-0 against TWO first place teams. That’s gettin’ it done in the world of baseball.

The Tig’s just caught Tampa on a hot streak! Nice 2 game sweep and this makes it more difficult to release Donnie Kelly as he seems to step up when called upon. Who could be the odd man out in the outfield when Dirks returns?

His return kind of coincides with the trade deadline……….

Just after the Miguel´s triple, ESPN in español crew pointed out a scratch on the knee

Koji Uehara for Tanaka on AL All-Star roster

Perhaps DD again knows more than he shows and Dirks’ longer than expected rehab could be a sign of potential issues? IDK, you don’t trade “damaged” goods.
I don’t see Hunter, JMart, AJax or Raggae traded so maybe Suarez goes back to Toledo?

Who plays then? Suarez is a lock unless they trade for another SS. Dirks remains in Toledo or Kelly goes. Romine is a better backup than Kelly since he can play SS and with Dirks , no need to another oF

You know I am not sure what the Bosox are after (though they just released Pierzynski) but they have a couple of guys that DD might be interested in. Uehara and Drew could solve some problems.
Nathan has been better lately but I’m not so sure he has turned the corner for good. In fact, I’d bet against it. DD still needs to shore up the pen with someone good—real good. Benoit, Street, Uehara, Soria type good.

What problem does Drew solve? He doesn’t help the bullpen.

Problem with releasing kelly he is sub at so many positions. Lets say Miggy goes down dduring a game sure Vmart could go in but then you lose the dh. As far as I know nobody else plays 1st or third.

Miguel plays 3B ( he played in the interleague games with VMart at 1B), Romine too, he played more games at 3B than any other position with LAA in 201.
JD can play 1B in a pinch. Kelly cant play SS unlike Romine.
No way Suarez goes to make space for Kelly.
It is Romine or Kelly, Kelly is gone. Dirks or Kelly? maybe Dirks remains in the Minors because you usually dont carry 5 OF.

And cut the bullpen to make room for Kelly would be beyond preposterous

Someone has a very hard choice to make . They keep Dirks out as long as they can , Keep Kelly if possible . V Mart is hurt worse than they are saying.

I don’t think Dirks’ recovery or rehab took and will take any longer than expected. He had disk surgery and he had no spring training to speak of. All of that June talk was wishful thinking, as I said at the time of his surgery.
We stand to have a surplus of outfielders and it’s trade season. One thing I learned about Dombrowski: you can’t begin to guess what he’s going to do.

Just got back from the game. 16th row behind home plate. Looks like Brad knows when to rest Miggy all you nay sayers! Some people are so negative. Ya gotta believe! Go Tigers!

Jd played exactly 4 games in the minors at 1st none in the majors….

has romine played anything but SS for the tigers this season? would kelly get scooped off waivers or would he take a AAA assignment? I think no and yes, respectfully. He’ll be back.
Larry, why do you think Vmart’s injury is more serious than the org. is letting on?
Anyone care to comment on AJ Perzinski’s DFA?

I wonder if AJ Pierzynski pissed someone off he was batting .254… The kept Ross who was batting .176. Doesn’t make a whole lot of sense.
Tampa blew the save so KC won……poop.

I’m not suggesting we do it, but that Papelbon fella is itchin to get out of philly – philly would likely kick in money and he’s only around for next year…..i’m just sayin’ hey the guy is smoking hot this year. With him, I’d feel the pen fixed. Nathan setup, Joba 7th. Everyone else is a middle innings guy anyhow.

I would not move Joba. He seems to have adapted to his role. I actually think they should give him more chances at closing if they don’t pick up a closer.

Drew is an experienced shortstop. A shortstop that has World series calibre experience. Plus he bats left-handed. Do I want him? No, but does DD want him?
That is the more pertinent question.
I wouldn’t mind Uehara though. And if it weren’t for a less than average arm-I like Pierzynski too. The guy plays hard, doesn’t strike out endlessly and gives you a pretty darn good bat and clutch hits.
Would he be an overall upgrade over Avila? No, Alex has the respect of the staff. He could probably hit .150 the rest of the year and still the guy they want to pitch too.
Alex also has offensive potential. I think he has one more year as a Tiger.
Dirks coming back is a mixed blessing. We get a LHB but we also muddle up the OF mix more than it already is and of course, no guarantees that he will any better than a very average player who gets injured a lot.

Mickey Stanley wasn’t a WS experienced shortstop. Drew wasn’t a WS shortstop until last year. Thats stupid reasoning.

Scherzer has pitched well with Holaday and praised him openly. At least one pitcher is not that comfortable with Avila.
JD has more chances of playing a decent 1B than Kelly, SS
Papelbon, many pundits think he fits into the Tigers bullpen .Joba needs to share sometime in the 8th. He and Al2 have been resting lately but had a pretty heavy workload for while. Two setups and occasional closing jobs for Nathan

stephen is in better half of the pack defensively…..but he’s never the best and he’s a .260 hitter. Personally I’d like zero Boras clients on the club, and certainly i’d rather have alexei ramirez then stephen “boo hoo” drew.
And AJ is a no-go as a tiger for several reasons for me: a) throws essentially nobody out on the paths, b) he’s attitude towards detroit for years

What part of “Do I want him? No, but does DD want him?” do you not understand Mayo?
If you have personal issues with my opinions fine, but at least examine them before you start unfriendly dude.
