Saturday’s lineups: Tigers vs. Rays

As expected, no Victor Martinez in the lineup today. Torii Hunter slots in at DH, with J.D. Martinez in right field and Rajai Davis in left. Andrew Romine gets the start at shortstop.

Reminder: Despite the atypical start time, today’s game is a Fox Sports Detroit broadcast. It’s a few hours earlier than normal for a summer Saturday game so that they can get on TV outside of the FOX national broadcast window.

Miggy comes to the plate far too often with bases empty in the first especially.

Dont even get me going on this homeplate umpire! How does he have a job!?

The Hanigan ab in the 3rd that wss 11 pitches he was struck out 7 pitches earlier. Cost him 8 pitches at least who knows what else. Better see some pitches right down the middle called balls for Archer

11 pitches to the lowest BA in the TB line-up and at least 2 called balls were clearly in the strike zone.

Feels like Anibal is going to suffer from no run support again today. Keep grounding out quickly and quietly.
And I guess Archer is going to be treated better by the homeplate ump.

Oh Oh! You mean CY Archer with only 30 pitches in 3 innings?

:)…..why does it feel like other teams run up the pitch counts on our pitchers yet we don’t do the same to theirs.

because the other team “takes” more pitches?

And they foul them off. Its a strategy that works and we’d rather just make it easy on their pitchers.

Anibal a little high in pitch count- over 60.

Kinsler- 2 pitch out
Cabrera – 3 pitch out
Martinez- 3 pitch out

They just said righties hitting over 300 against him for an era of 4.39. Our guys have made him throw 37 pitches through 4 innings.
Freaking pathetic!

You nailed it, gk. Archer has only 37 pitches in 4 innings. That is one of the lowest I have ever seen. Only 9 per inning.

unbelievable, really.

And there you go, a HR. If they don’t figure Archer out, that could be the game.

And Anibal just gave it up! Might be all they need if this continues

off the glove of Avila. What else is new?

Another walk to the lowest BA in their line-up. Anibal is courting his own disaster.

Last pitch was a strike at least it was for Archer but apparently things like that dont matter much

Im frustrated. …….would love to know if Avila can catch a freaking ball. I know he can’t hit. I honestly dont see his value supposedly he calls a good game.

The wheels are coming off the bus.

Geez, Anibal very rarely gets run support. The guys are playing like they are in a hurry to get home. Kind of disappointed. 4 more innings to show up. Go Tigers!!

Unbelievable. Sweep the 1st place A’s but lose the series to 2 last place teams- Astros and Rays? That reeks of concentration and effort problems.

Torii – 2 pitch hit
Nick – 1 pitch out
Avila – 4 pitch walk
Romine – 5 pitch SO
Davis – 1 pitch out
13 pitches 5 batters. They must have plans tonight

Chris has allowed .351/.354/.457 (97 PAs) during plate appearances in which the batter swung at the first pitch which includes .395/.410/.447 (40 PAs) when the first pitch ends the PA.

Pitch count has more aspects to it than just the absolute. It also offers the hitters more ‘looks” at all pitcher’s pitches. Gives them an advantage.
tiger hitters are simply being stupid today. not sure why this happens but it does, and it happens regularly.
Anibal was due to be hit as every batter had pretty much seen his arsenal and none of it included a high fastball.
He was getting used to Tampa hitters taking 1st pitch and Forsythe ambushed him. Smart hitting. Something our hitters can’t be accused of today.
This game is done. you can tell when the players have resigned themselves to an outcome.

We definately have a team that quits

Honestly why do I waste time watching this when they so clearly are in a hurry to go home.

Not watching anymore I’ll watch something else. Screw it. Won’t win tomorrow either. Grienke and Beckett next. KC won’t be a cakewalk either. Look good then go into another bad pitching no hitting spiral.

The story I read about Martinez, Jr. is that he got into it with his manager for swinging at the first pitch. I guess it was a team thing that they not do that. The Tigers have always been agressive hitters except when they are in the final innings of a close game. Then they take their time.

The bats just go to sleep….they don’t scratch for runs…it’s all or nothing. What’s wrong with their coaching system? Jackson belongs lower in the lineup…he’s just not very consistent there.
I’ve been watching these games on, I can’t
believe this particular Gldden paint commercial…they show it just about every commercial break and it’s boring with boring participants acting as paint specialists.
I wouldn’t buy that paint on a bet. Sorry, I hate see anybody lose their jobs, Gldden
people…get a better commercial going,

Chris Archer looks pretty good to me. Oops, Alex just hit a HR off him.

BTW- I am not so dense to expect every player to be Ty Cobb nor do I expect every manager to be MAYO SMITH!!!!

Why is it that our starters have to be talented and smart while our opponents simply have to have a have a starter that throws strikes?
Archer has 3 Ks–our hitters are putting themselves out.

Just looked to see if game was over I see Avila got himself another meaningless homerun. Might want to try something when someone is on base.

Alex hits those but he also hits unexpected big homers to win games. If he hits them at all it is encouraging. His is a very important position on this ball club. He is going to play 85% of the time so offensive contribution is a must for success.

1. Three DP’s from the infield
2. Ajax hit the ball well tonight; great defense from TB robbed him of two more hits.
3. BP minus the one hit off of Coke, did okay. The two extra runs had no bearing on the final score.
Not much else. No kudos tonight. I love Alex’s swing when he’s ready for a fastball. It’s a shame that swing doesn’t carry over to a .275 average, and many more Ribs.
Julio’s HR was meaningless also as far as the outcome. He’s still the most consistent hitter we have right now. Miggy played Maggy again tonight; this is becoming too common. TB’s catcher saw more pitches in 1 AB than Davis saw all night long. This Goat to Hero to Goat stuff with him is getting old too. I would have pinch hit Romine with anybody in the ninth, just to try and make it interesting. TB’s young guy made us look like bush leaguers. This, too, is becoming the norm rather than out of the ordinary. If the Price is right tomorrow night. we hang our tails by losing 3-4 again to a last place club. Hope Victor gets plenty of R & R over the next few days. If I were DD, I would say no to any Tiger being in the Derby, except maybe for Rags. Show us again Rick, that you have indeed made it to the big show. I would say no shutout necessary, but I wouldn’t bet we’ll score more than one Sunday.

I really don’t know what the answer is for this club . The last two games they have looked pathetic .Not the club that dispatched dispatched Oakland .Tomorrow is another day and a chance for a win .

Reference IDavis, why does he always take good pitches(exception the grand slam one
down the center) and swing at pitches outside the strike zone consistently…if the pitchers know he’s swinging at them, that’s where there going to throw it, even further outside…again where are the hitting coaches? Can you imagine what a better
hitter he would be if someone would bring this to his attention…I know it’s easy to
criticize…but darn it, he doesn’t appear to be a smart hitter when he does that.

Read on MLive that Ausmus might just consider resting VMart (if needed) right thru to the All Star break. If that is the case then why not simply just do it/ He is going to be running a short bench plus the risk of tweaking VMart further if he is forced to use him. Just put him on the DL and call somebody up for crying out loud. Be smart.

Scherzer vs Sanchez:
Sanchez ( Scherzer) 3.52 ERA ( 3.65) 1138.2 IP(1138.1) 445 ER( 462) 399BB (359) 1002 SO(1208) ERA plus 118(116) FIP 3.51 ( 3.45) H/9 8.5( 8.2) HR/9 0.7(1.0) 2.51 SO/W( 3.36) WAR 23.6 (21)

The trade season is on earlier. When will the Tigers make a move? BP, LHB OF. Maybe an 5th starter type to add depth

Im aware they dont have many trade chips

they’ve got 1 or 2, but all focus should be on the bullpen IMO. Maybe next year we should do this kinda work in the offseason. cheaper that way

I wonder if McCoy will go down and they bring Miller back/ He has been pitching very well.

hopefully it’s just a “couple days of rest” type of thing for mccoy. always hard to see an injury slow down a player doing well.

actually all 3 of our “junior” bullpen pitchers have been doing well in their adjustments to the “big leagues”. (boy that seems to be a high porportion of youngins’) and at 11 games/11.2 innings pitched, and an ERA of 2.31, blaine hardy certainly is starting to establish himself as a reliable reliever.

It would be very cool to see Ricky P’s ERA under 3.00 at the end of this day. For a number of reasons.

Scherzer FIP 2.88 his ERA will go down. Porcello 3.75, his will go up. SIERA MS:2.93. 4.11. Scherzer cant be replaced by Porcello.
Pitching for contact lowers the pitch count and that is great but when you have the 4th worst defense in MLB, you are playing with fire

You can infer a lot from this article:
Monaghan has been much maligned .I only knows that he bought the Tigers and extended the soon to be FA: Morris, Trammell and Whitaker and signed Evans,( I read back then that he was the first FA signed by the Tigers), winning the last Trophy. The homework was made as soon as the team was kept together, It was a sure thing that they would be traded son for washed up players ( no offense to Hebner or Kuntz, just the true ) under the former ownership
Maybe , that is the reason for the cold relationship with the 1984 team

Krol activated, McCoy to DL hamstring… of course

According to @jcrasnick, J.D. Martinez broke an Astros rule last yr when he swung at a 1st pitch. 5 of his 11 HRs in DET are on 1st pitches.

The pitcher wants to put himself ahead, he will throw an strike. JD Martinez, quoting Miguel ,said that the pitcher will give you only one pitch to hit. Miguel pointed out that pitch is the first.

Sanchez is not fooling the batters the 3rd time through the lineup. His K’s are down, his BB’s are up and the ERA is north of 5.00 and only averaging 6 IP/game. Needs to get some mechanics worked out in BP sessions.

that business week article is very interesting eltigre. thanx for posting—tho unfortunately mr illitch is taking quite a beating in the comments section.😦
and the note about JD & Astros is quite a hoot too.

Nice post. I learn something totally new and challenging on websites I
stumbleupon on a daily basis. It’s always useful to read through articles from other writers and use a little
something from other sites.
