Fourth of July lineups: Tigers vs. Rays

CoPa 001

Left-handed hitters are batting just .198 (24-for-121) off Alex Cobb this season, compared to a .293 average from right-handed batters. The career trend, however, is pretty close to even. With Chris Archer and David Price coming up this weekend, Brad Ausmus will take tonight to give Nick Castellanos a game off and put Don Kelly in the game. The move is NOT injury-related. Though Kelly was on deck to hit for Castellanos in the fourth inning Thursday night, Ausmus admitted that was a stall tactic while Castellanos was in the bathroom.

Reminder: Tonight is an ESPN broadcast, though it’s still on Fox Sports Detroit in Michigan and Northwest Ohio. The difference is that fans outside the local markets can watch it on national TV.

Couldn’t go up north like we usually do for the 4th…..heading down to the game in a little bit…go Tigers! Hopefully Smyly is feeling better.

sure wish i was up north michigan right now.

I am lucky enough to live up here in God’s country…. Go Tigers !!

Good thing nobody locked Casty in! Didn’t something like that happen to Fernando Rodney once?

I think it was him……

Ok admittedly I understand very little about soccer….I have been watching a little of the World Cup. All the flopping and rolling around on the ground is amusing. Not to mention highly exaggerated.

The one that sent Neymar to the hospital was for real

I stopped watching. Couldn’t deal with all the acting and drama. I see the appeal because you only need a ball to play, but I’d just as soon watch hockey.

Ok so what’s up with the red caps? I don’t remember them mixing it up like that for other 4th of July’s.

Smyly is not an efficient pitcher as a starter. 70+ pitches and he’s only through 4 IP’s!
He can barely go 6 Innings. He needs to work on his location/velocity or else he’s BP bound as a specialist. You can’t barely go 5+IP/game.

Was hoping he’d escape with only the 3 runs. Couldn’t get that last guy out.

Was surprised he was sent out for the 6th. ..he looked to be losing it in the 5th. But what do I know. Its always one batter too late.

One, Sean Rodriguez. Loney being LH

Rodriguez with the base clearing triple? Smyly seems to lose stamina around 90 pitches

Chad Smith or anyone else for Rodriguez. He was the xtra It was right( hindsight ) to allow him to pitch against the LH

VMart was hit first. Then they hit Longoria. The ump was right

Oh, brother, these umps.

Smyly was lucky all night. he left pitches up and they hit him hard all night.
We caught a break in our half of the 6th but I knew Torii would get ONE run home and I knew it would be a Torii Two-Hop that would kill the inning.
He has been pretty predictable in DP situations.

Get a run and give it right back. Not the way to get back into a game is it?

Don’t feel “it” tonight. I don’t think our guys are “”eeling it” either.

With Suarez coming back to earth (and hard I might add), can Hernan be far behind?
I think it is pretty obvious Rajai will be playing Sunday night but is there a reason he can’t replace Hunter or the Golden Sombrero tomorrow too?

I think it is a foregone conclusion DD will strengthen the bullpen. Will it be at the expense of Moya, R Cabrera, Travis or McCann?
I’m thinking the Tigers might want to give RCab a chance. Avila is not going to cut it in the long term.
Moya could solve a corner OF spot in a year or so.
Travis looks like a guy you want to keep- I would expect him to get to AAA very soon and be ready when Kinsler’s contract is up.

The crowd wants the magic.

It all starts with the pitching.

The guy locked in the bathroom was Brennan Boesch, and I believe it was in Viera.

Smyly obviously will have to improve his location. In his second season, that is a work in progress.
I thought the Kinsler HBP was over the line in tonight’s situation. It should have been over after Longoria.
Not much of a game. I spent some of it watching the various fireworks being shot off around the neighborhood and in the distance. We were supposed to go to DC but wife got sick.

1. The Rookie Lefty’s continue their good BP work.
2. Julio will not give up a spot in the lineup.
3. We kept it close enough to have a shot if Miggy could have come through.

Kudos to Julio and Victor. Hope Victor doesn’t get into a lingering injury mode. Drew just leaves the ball up and right over the plate to righthanded batters. He’s not going to be consistent until he does that. Defense was good tonight. Basically nothing from 7-1, save 1 hit. Jackson, though he looked pretty bad, wasn’t the lone ranger. Cobb made the lineup look weak tonight. Saturday is a must win for the guys, because Sunday, the Price is usually right. Lost a game to KC; more breathing room in the lost column. On a completely different subject, I’ve never liked the idea of foreign born players, especially in good baseball countries, to be eligible for Rookie of the Year.
Players like Cespides, Puig, and Abreu, along with Darvish, and the Yankee phenom, usually have six or seven years of professional baseball behind them. Most are in their mid to late 20’s, and still qualify as a major league Rookie. Remember Ichiro was ROY way back, after playing many seasons in Japan. Enough said; just wanted to gripe.

I agree I don’t think they should be considered rookies either…especially the Japanese leagues.
Disappointing tonight. Smyly might need to be skipped in the rotation occasionally.
With Oakland getting two top flight pitchers tonight from the cubs it makes things much more difficult assuming we meet them again in the playoffs.

If we had a solid starter in the minors Smyly might serve us better in the pen.
That was an “IF”.
