Sunday’s lineups: Tigers at Astros

A day after Ian Kinsler powered the Tigers to a win with his ninth-inning home run, he will have just his second day off this season. Andrew Romine gets the start at second base. Meanwhile, Rajai Davis returns to the bench for the third time in four days, as Austin Jackson returns to the lineup. Neither Davis (4-for-16, double, three strikeouts) nor Jackson (2-for-11, triple, walk, four strikeouts) have hit Scott Feldman particularly well, but Jackson sat yesterday.

Interestingly in the shakeup, Austin Jackson returns to the leadoff spot he owned for years.

With lefty Drew Smyly on the mound, the Astros bring out backup catcher Carlos Corporan, whose three home runs in 18 career at-bats against Detroit mark his highest total against any opposing team. And that doesn’t count his two-homer game at Lakeland in Spring Training in 2013.

Booooooo Kinsler out of lineup VMart and Miggy better show up today.

“Ausmus said he spoke with Kinsler last night about getting a day off: “We’ve been talking about getting him an off day before the break.”
“So why rest Kinsler when he’s red-hot? “You don’t ever want to take him out of the lineup, but at some point, the guy has to get a rest.”
“Jackson could remain at lead off with good game today – “got to get him going” said Ausmus”

Holland missed by this much a goal against Mexico. The ball was over the goal line but not crossed it in full. The referee receives instantly a call from the control center telling him it was not goal. This was done to avoid the ghost goal like the one who handed England the World Cup at home,It is like the technology used in tennis for years. It could be easily used to call HR without review. Foul and fair ball would be a little trickier due to the details of the rules.

Too bad about Mexico. They went into a defensive shell and forgot about ball control

Suarez has no dropped 3 throws from team-mates in the last week. lack of concentration–nerves.

He’s not very good on defense. ….

More awesome Tiger’s defense. Had him picked off can’t catch ball.?????

Astos > Tigers

Smyly is teeing up his breaking ball on all 3 hits. The team is again lacklustre.

Seriously can anybody on the left side of infield get to a ball and make a play?

Did any of these guys get any sleep last night? They look like dunces out there.

They give Altuve stolen bases on evrything when he advances a base. Suarez dropped the ball-it was an error—not a stolen base.
Drew ‘Aw Shucked” it over to Miggy for sure but the throw from Miggy was well ahead of Altuve.

castellanos has exceeded expectaitons at 3rd–at least my expectations. He does need to move forward to meet a batted ball rather than a stutterstep backwards first though. He’s fighting it a bit but gets the job done. Lots of bare-handed plays thus far and his throws have been on target all year.

I couldn’t agree less he has no range even has a hard time with balls right at him. Not sure how he was ever a shortstop he can’t get to balls 3 feet to either side.

Miggy and Victor MIA

Suarez won a GG in the Minors. He can lose concentration in routine plays

Wow that shocks me.

Miggy taking the starch right out of the team. Smyly better start getting the ball down or there will a lot more than 3 runs to deal with.

Drew just doesn’t appear to have much today. …along with the rest of them.

If you have no curveball today, quit throwing it. Astros don’t appear to be a good fastball hitting team. This might be a good matchup for Chad Smith.

Casty will hit enough from a position which requires offense, to make you forget about that as soon as this year.
He is a far more exciting ballplayer than some of the older veterans we have on the team right now.

I’m not giving up on him be he’s worse than Miguel.

I think he comes up better than he does going to his right and left.

Promising inning and Austin helps out as par the course by grounding into a double play. Torii of course hit it hard but right at em.

No thanks to AJ & BA. Brad has to be bunting after getting absolute gifts to have the bottom of the lineup put 2 men on and nobody out. AJ, who hasn’t hit a ball the whole day is in a position to put two men in scoring position, take away the DP and have the middle of the lineup coming up.
And Brad doesn’t bunt?
Huge inning for Houston. They have to be pretty happy about giving up no runs in that situation.
As I mentioned before the game. Get rid of AJ and get someone who is consistent even if he has less potential. AJ will not realize his potential (and he has a tonne) here in Detroit.

I will give credit for pulling Smyly though. At least he didn’t get “save the bullpen fixated” and realized the only chance of getting back into the game was be taking him out.

Smyly 2.1 inning ps allowed 10 base runners……smith 2.2 innings 1 hit

Guess were just trying to hit solo homeruns (and not getting them) instead of trying to get on base to get something going. #typical

2 people in the Astros line up batting above .240 ….and can’t get em out. ..amazing

I sure would like to know what the teams batting average is with runners in scoring position? Can’t be good.

Worst hitter on this team right now…….Miggys in the running.

Miguel and Victor 1-25 in series with 2 walk as well. That’s it in a nutshell isn’t it?

Heard that on ESPN could not beleive it. They gotta start hitting and soon…..

Not looking good. Could easily have been swept in this series.

Just watched the clip. Not the best view but twice in the game the Tigers risked the third out at 3b. The were lucky twice.Especially with a low runner like Castellanos

Can’t remember a game in a long time where a team (The Astros) worked harder to give the game away and the Tigers just could not muster up any juice to take what was being handed to them on a silver platter. Jackson looking absolutely horrible at the plate today.

While it’s hard to complain about. 7-2 road trip today’s game really bothered me. Seriously looked like Miguel and Victor didn’t give a crap lazy ab’s and it almost looked like they were trying to get out.

“Well, there might’ve been a valid excuse behind Smyly’s terrible start. He was, and still is, sick. Sounded terrible. Sure it played a role.” Schmehl twitted

The bottom line is it’s a 7-2 road trip and three games gained in the standings.
This weekend featured some of the poorest baseball by both teams I’ve seen in quite some time. If I had kids here, I would have told them not to watch.
I thought Smith could shut down the Astros because those guys seem incapable of hitting fastballs. I wish we would have cut our secondary pitches in half for the entire series. They did nearly or all of their damage against off speed stuff.
I also don’t care for indoor baseball and perhaps our guys don’t either. Doesn’t seem quite real.
Turns out Smyly had an illness yesterday that obviously lingered.
7-2 road trip. You can’t complain.

Postgame I could hear the players shouting it up over the World Cup. When does that end?

July 13th or before if “their ” team is ousted before

Every team in our division won today except the Tigers………Cleveland still up in the air.

We can be happy with the 7-2. But DD better not be.

Brad puts AJ at leadoff? Well we all saw how well that went last year.
AJ simply does not respond well to pressure, whether it be self-imposed or real.
The problem with that is that an MLB player always deals with pressure. If they can’t they are MiLB.
AJ’s only usefulness at this point is in presumed trade value (IMHO).
The Tigers need a bopper in the OF. Andy Dirks is not a bopper.

1. Three double plays for the game.
2. Rookie 1 has his first triple and ends up with another 2hit game and 2 ribs.
3. Smith has a good outing with the help of the weird DP.

1-4 were horrible again, going 2 for 16. Miggy looks more like Maggie for the past three games. Avila has a nice HR as his swings continue to improve. Julio continues his quest to stay in the lineup on a permanent basis. Ajax couldn’t put a beach ball in play right now. We should have dominated this team, and let them run circles around us. Play like this against the A’s, and we’ll be in second again. A little consistency would be wonderful.

By baseball standards, we had a great road trip. By the Blog standard, we stunk it up in Houston.

blog standard, gold standard…..same thing

Hope this does not carry over .Oakland will be landing at Metro soon ,

guys guys guys – we’re GOING HOME. you know we play better at home! Winning this series against the A’s and were gunna feel great.

Consistency would be fabulous. It is one thing to lose and it a whole other thing to lose so badly and play so poorly you wonder when you will be able to win again.
And that’s what happens with this team. It is always on the verge of being gruesome or going into a team-wide “funk”.
How on earth Miggy can go from the best hitter on the planet, to somebody with no idea at the plate, is baffling. When it happens it permeates the the collective consciousness of all the veteran hitters in the lineup.
The guys have to play every at bat, every pitch like it matters. In a sense it does. An uncaught ball dropped carelessly can turn a shut-inning into a crooked number. A swing and a miss at a ball in the dirt can turn the count against you and breathe life into the pitcher and change the game right around. A decision not to bunt can kill a rally and relieve the pressure on your opponent.
The team that minimizes these “real-time’ events in a game is a team that wins the games it should and many of the ones they shouldn’t.
Our guys looked like they were playing in a fog against an opponent that should have been out-classed.

10 games above .500 playing sporadic, inconsistent streaky ball. Next up the hot A’s and they play well at CoPa too. I know Smyly was ill, I’m not sure he is cut out to be a starter. He was pretty effective from the BP last year, maybe that’s where he ends up again if they can find a 5th SP.

I feel bad for AJ. The pressure he is feeling must be almost debilitating. But, a time comes when a change is necessary. Perhaps that change is a change of scenery. They have tried to relieve the pressure from his shoulders by removing him from the lead-off role. He felt too much pressure having to get on base, take pitches etc in front tof the big boys.
Then they are concerned that they are putting pressure on him to be an RBI man and they seek to relieve that pressure. The only other place to give him a try is at the bottom of the lineup. 8th or 9th. Tell him there are no expectations other than to keep swinging until he finds his stroke. It that doesn’t work then perhaps the pressure he feels is that of being a central figure on a championship quality ball team and he needs a complete change of venue.
Austin Jackson is a good player who has the talents to become a better than good player. if he can’t handle the pressure he will not realize that status.

maybe he can handle the pressure with less people in the sands….miami i’m thinking

think Detroil Tigers have to go back to spring training & learn how to bunt!!!!
Both loses in Houston Could possibly been avoided with some bunting the runners around. #3rd Game – Two one- noone out & Jackson at bat – no bunt. caused the loss!!!

Does seem like it was the ideal, if not perfect, time to bunt. AJ struggling, needing to find a way to contribute, move up two runners into scoring position for #3 & #4 etc etc
