Friday’s lineups: Tigers at Astros (updated with Fowler out)

Rajai Davis sits for a second consecutive game. His numbers aren’t good against Astros starter Brad Peacock (0-for-5, walk, K), but Torii Hunter is hitless off him as well. Austin Jackson has yet to face him.

On the Astros side, you’ll notice that Dexter Fowler has been scratched, reportedly with back tightness, replaced in the lineup by L.J. Hoes and in center field by Alex Presley.

TIGERS (career numbers off Brad Peacock)

  1. Ian Kinsler, 2B (2-for-9, walk, 2 K’s)

This is a classic trap series so let’s get ready to battle. First two starters were trouble for us last time. New faces in their lineup too. We need two wins this weekend to guarantee a winning record in June. Go Tigers!!!!

Scott Downs could be an option. Unlike JJ he has been the victim of bad luck: Fip 3.69. ERA: 6.08. His walks are above his career average, his SO are too above career average and his HR/9 playing at alittle park are better than his career average. He is a LH with more than a pulse and better as LOOGY than you know who

Foxsport has a Rosenthal piece about Nathan. I cant link to it because the system is blocking it. It has a couple of interesting bits:

he’s been unlucky on balls in play and potential home runs, and his real performance suggests and ERA at least two runs lower than his actual performance”

“He probably isn’t the pitcher he once was, and he’s never going to be a Kimbrel or Chapman again. But he should be good enough.”

Stark thinks Sipp could be available. LH, high SO/9 and but he was NOT DFA like most of the bullpen

Correction: he was granted free agency too, one year ago.

and DFA by San Diego

How comes the first run was earned?

Should’ t have been ET
This game has all been about how to run bases.
Surprised BA did not challenge the J D slide
He may have Ben safe
Keep pulling the ball Nick
Astros have life now
For some reason I know when there is a play at the plate Alex will not make it

If AA had a better game we might be ahead in this one. Not blaming simply an observation

What a weird time to take Peacok out.
Glad to see him gone

My thoughts exactly, when I saw he was leaving I said thank you, Bo Porter.

What a nice player that Altuve is!

Solid player that just keeps getting better .

What a nice player that Altuve is
I don’t see Smith being effective with no secondary offset pitch

Smith is great for 2 batters. He just can’t get the 3rd out.

C’mon Tigers!

Ok 10th inning just got home from a graduation party….not that I really care if Verlander has an earned run but how is the run he gave up in the 1st earned? I wasn’t watching but looking at the box score i don’t get it?

This one is all about Altuve. I fully expect the 10th to reflect that as we’ll.
If we get him out we might pull this one off.

BA is really relying on rookies tonight

That’s what’s in his bullpen.

Deserved to lose it
Horrible ABs by the middle of our lineup that last innin against inferior pitching

Actually Coke/Nathan were experienced alternatives though I understand the options were limited to be sure

Missed it. I was at a show. Guess it was a good move on my part.

1. Tigers strike out 10 Astros through nine. With Altuve’s 4 hits, that means 8 other Stros only put the ball in play 12 times before extra innings.
2. Julio hits and hits.
3. Rookie 1 demonstrates a future solid hitter.

JV was okay. The defense and base running still tend to look like rec ball. Bull Pen did a nice job, albeit the HR in the 11th. We lost the game tonight simply because 2, 3, and 4 were a combined 0-14. Add in 7’s 0-4, and you have no problem seeing why JV can’t win a game. We like to play down to the competition, so we don’t hurt their feelings. Give the reincarnation of Albie Pearson his due; he is an eat dirt, flat out, pesky, good ballplayer. I love to see him and Miggy discussing Venezuelan politics at first base, after he gets another hit off of our guys. Time for Old Blue/Brown Eyes to rachet up the heat tomorrow night.

Question, probably for Jason:
Major League teams protect themselves against injuries with the purchase of insurance. In the case of prince Fielder being out for the season with and injury and the Tigers paying some of his salary, are they getting any financial relief because of his injury?

They don’t pay any of his salary this year or next. It’s the last five years of his contract that we kick in 6 mil a year.

The keys:
Another running mistake by Kinsler.
Bad defense from the battery
Overused bullpen: Joba and Alburquerque
Tigers 36 outs while making a running play. First in MLB
CS 27 second in MLB
5 picked-off
68 outs because of the aggressive running
36% of xtrabase taken. 3rd worst
27th in Base running for Fangraphs
RE : Fielder. the Tigers wont pay Fielder until 2016
That is why I expect Kinsler to be traded after 2015

I shut if off after that 5 pitch inning. That just disgusted me. I loved the one DP Houston made…one of the best I’ve ever seen. And, I loved Altuve, The Tigers could have won, but they didn’t play very smart.

Very interesting points ET. The base-running has been suspect all year but to see it backed up in stats makes it even more alarming.
Kinsler has been inefficient for sure. We all thought he was here to steal bases as a leadoff man. That plan has not materialized.
I found it very interesting that Altuve takes virtually no lead at all at 1st. He steals on jump, acceleration and raw speed. Pretty to watch. Can you imagine how mnany he would swipe if he took a Rickey Henderson Tim Raines type lead/

Tigers miss Keuchel and get a lefty with poor numbers.
Can they do something here today? Will Miggy start hitting these southpaws again?
Who will sit today? Hunter or Jackson? (they pretty much have to get Rajai back in)

Hopefully not lost in yesterday’s game is how well JV threw. If his problems have been physical perhaps we can hope for further improvement?

Kinsler 2B
Hunter RF
Cabrera DH
V. Martinez 1B
J. Martinez LF
Castellanos 3B
Jackson CF
Holaday C
Suarez SS
Scherzer P

New lineup: Davis 8, Kinsler 4, Cabrera DH, V. Martinez 3, J. Martinez 7, Hunter 9, Castellanos 5, Holaday 2, Suarez 6. Scherzer starting.
