Monday’s lineups: Tigers vs. Royals

CoPa 001

Tigers hitting coach Wally Joyner turns 52 years old today. It would be a shame if he spent his birthday wondering why his team couldn’t hit Jason Vargas. They’re loading up on right-handed hitters to give themselves a shot, including the return of Rajai Davis for his first start since the White Sox series. He wasn’t injured; he was just sitting for J.D. Martinez. The one lefty hitter in the lineup is Alex Avila, who is catching with Justin Verlander starting.

he was sitting because he wasn’t hitting. so now that he’s back, bat him leadoff.

Third time against Vargas this year. The last time was in KC and we rocked him for seven runs. RD was 2 for 4 with 2SBs. Not sure where he batted in the order that night. Kinsler is 4 for 6 off him this year. Avila is there tonight. Glad to see Suarez there too. Good job Brad.

With these players my lineup would be:
Ian Kinsler, 2B (16-for-50, 6 doubles, 2 HR, 3 walks, 2 K’s)
Austin Jackson, CF (4-for-20, double, 4 K’s)
Miguel Cabrera, 1B (4-for-13, 2 doubles, HR, 5 walks, 2 K’s)
Victor Martinez, DH (3-for-6, walk, K)
Torii Hunter, RF (9-for-35, 4 doubles, 4 walks, 7 K’s)
Nick Castellanos, 3B (1-for-6, HR, K)
Alex Avila, C (3-for-11, double, 2 HR, walk, 3 K’s)
Rajai Davis, LF (3-for-15, double, walk, 4 K’s)
Eugenio Suarez, SS

If Rajai expects to play ahead of JD he will need to offset the potential power loss.
This means he has to get on base. He has to bunt for a hit and run on pitches that are not obvious pitch outs.

JD hasn’t proved himself yet.

Headed to the game tonight….here is hoping that JV REALLY has figured something out..

“Tigers are unlikely to make a play for Jimmy Rollins or any other shortstop, sources say. They like Suarez. Perez playing well at AAA.”
Then bullpen and OF

SS is not a need currently, however OF andBP arms are a more urgent need.

Sources say it’s unlikely……………how’s that for hard news? 🙂

He is warming his fingers for the trade-line

trade deadline

From the Detroit Department of Paranoia: perhaps Avila is tipping pitches. It’s not always the pitcher doing it. Hmmmm?

Cafardo:”Joe Nathan, RHP, Tigers — Closers go up and down during the course of a season, so to give up on Nathan so soon is not an option. Nathan allowed 10 runs in a recent 3⅓-inning stretch, which is as many runs as he allowed with Texas last season. One downer for Nathan is that he doesn’t get to face the Tigers, against whom he converted 36 straight save situations.”
And:”Jonathan Papelbon, RHP(,…) A future Tiger, Oriole?”

Avila tipping pitches?.. Well that’s funny looking at the box scores Holaday while he hasn’t played much has been in there for losses as well as some wins. Same as Avila.

Rajai is not getting good reads on pitchers at all. Been fortunate that he has been able to beat the throw after he has been picked off.

Dreaded leadoff walk. We all know what comes next.
Keep the ball down JV- you may have noticed Cooper likes the low strike. Take advantage of that.

Well if Perez doesn’t get to JV we have a chance!

Miggy–Miggy–stop with this 1st pitch swinging with 1st and 3rd or bases loaded and less than 2 out. It’s getting real old.

Miguel Cabrera, through 65 games in Triple Crown year: .314/.370/.542, 14 HR; Cabrera, through 65 games this year: .324/.373/.557, 12 HR.

first pitch:.467 .478 .844 1.323

It’s not Miggy you have to worry about it is the REST of the TEAM.

JV fails again.

Guess I got my answer Verlander still sucks. 9 hits a walk and a hit batter through 5. Inning not done.

And their guy doesn’t do the same. He does what he is supposed to—get the ball in the air. Burns AJ and JV
One god-awful inning that was.

I know the numbers are goo on Miggy and 1st pitch swinging but it has not been working lately with a man standing on 3rd

.444 .500 .444 .944 runner at 3rd /4 for 9 before today.

3 and 4 are not the problem for this team. Neither Jackson lately

worrisome? the 230 vs LHP by Miguel

Time for the offense to roll over now.

Verlanders pitch count already over 90 . Another walk for Kansas City . JV has to do better so does the offense !!

Well, that wraps it for tonight. Down 7-2. Can every team be stealing signs? Does JV need some time in Toledo? Is he hiding some injury to avoid the DL? Maybe all that is needed is a needle to pop that big over blown ego of his.

The bunt was the wrong call as usual

What bunt?

Suarez. Playing for one run that early.

Im watching Mets- St Louis. They cut once in a while to the Tigers game to show the runs.

I’m pretty sure the ego is already popped and is not the problem. The problem is the arm, not the head.
Meanwhile we have an offense that can’t square up fastballs no matter what speed they are delivered.

He had surgery. Probably, rushed back. High counts too early into the season. That happens when you lack depth in the Minors.

Maybe but how do you explain the 1st month? While I know his whip wasn’t good he still had a low era. Was he getting lucky? And if he does need the dl then go stop embarrassing and your team. Tired of excuses.

April 7 SO/9 May 6/9 June 7.1/9
The 6 wins were with 6 or more runs scored.
No excuses. Just trying to guess the reason. Something is wrong , they need to correct that. 219 MM reasons to find a solution.

Absolutely. Heck I wish they’d tell us it was it and he went on the DL. I’d feel a whole lot better if they did at least it would be a reason ya know? But the way he is pitching he shouldn’t be allowed to pitch he’s hurting the team…..I’m not sure I think the past gives you a free pass to do this.

We left. ….wasted mu time and money. They still have their millions I’m sure they’ll be fine.

bummer for you gk – just got home and saw the score, will not invest the rest of the night on getting myself worked up. I am usually the last to panic when players struggle, especially elite ones. I now am officially worried that JV might not right the ship. I did not listen to Rod and Mario tonight, am guessing Rod is still saying JV will get it back. Jim and Dan on the radio do much less sugarcoating and were wondering what he can do to get right.

They have me laughing at the play now.
Neat to watch Hardy have his moment. Nice breaking ball. reminds me of Schlereth but with control..
Anybody else figure Kinsler is gonna uppercut a popup and Miggy is going to get a useless double.

Well Tiger fans, enjoy tomorrow. It may be the last time we get to use to phrase “first place Detroit Tigers” for a long, long time. This is not a slump anymore, this is who we are. This team is headed for a 90 loss season.

I would be really surprised if they had anything approaching a 90 loss season. They are not the Mariners, whose ownership is happy that fans come in to see one player and buy bobbleheads, but doesn’t care to put a winning team on the field. They’re not the Astros or Padres either. The Tigers managementcares about winning and will make some trades before the deadline. Yes, they could have done better in the offseason, but I’d be really surprised if they let this go on much longer.

Until a few days ago Craig Monroe acted like all was well . Both he and Mickey York now admit KC is in town and ready to play . No kidding boys what have we been watching since the Cleveland series . Gotta think DD is working his contacts now to see what he can find . We can only hope and watch .

Someone asked what Rod or Mario said about Verlander. Rod said “I can’t figure it out” or words to that effect.
I have to think a physical issue at this point. He was getting so many choppers early on that he looked like Porcello. That’s fine, but that’s not Verlander. He’s become our least effective starter so something has to be done.
Just throwing this out there, but that 9th inning may have marked the end of the Royals hot streak. Seen it happen before. Good team, though. I did pick ’em to win, although I hated doing it.

I just don’t understand why anyone would waste their money going to watch the Tigers play at Comerica. Seriously? KC has won 8 in a row. A 90 loss season? Why are you wasting your time posting that! Hope you all have a nice few months and I will be back on this blog in September when the Tigers have a 5 game lead. Go Tigers!

Not sure how I should take that Loui Tiant comment by Verlander. Seemed a little douchey to me like he was mocking the reporter. Maybe I’m reading too much into it.

only caught pieces of tonights game as i’m in boston at a conference. i did catch the suarez granny tho. Even if this season is awash it feels like we have a chance to develop some youngsters both in the pen and positional. You can’t go to the WS every year you know!

Martinez Jr. hit that, Evan. I’ve stopped watching and listening to the post-game interviews because they are starting to sound like politicians. Millionaires telling us what to think. And, I don’t begrudge them their money, either. Just give me my money’s worth!

but then, it’s not my money. When the egomaniacs leftt the game, the boys got busy.

Well my 10 yr old niece best said it. Excuse, excuse, and more excuses . Going to bed tomorrow iss another game I think .

Well JD proved himself at least. It was good to see Hardy do well in his debut. Tigers failed to take control early. Should have had at least 4 instead of the 2 they settled for. We’ll never see AJ lay out like Cain did. That was an amazing catch. I did that once….well sort of……On the dive I fractured and dislocated my throwing hand thumb, jamming it into the ground. Made the catch, threw the ball to somebody, ran off the field and was driven to the hospital, all kind of in one sickening sequence. Umpire wrongly ruled it a trap. I knew I’d caught it, but an argument was the last thing on my mind after seeing my thumb pointing in a most unusual direction. Ended that summer of ball for me. Talk about wasted effort.

Looks like KC is the real deal. Without what we’ve come to expect from JV you wonder if this team has enough to stay with the Royals. They’re playing sloppy baseball right now. Not every game but more than half the time. No 90 loss season but will be lucky to win 84 at this rate.

1. Hardy
2. Raggie
3. JV- Oh you didn’t hear; he’s got it figured out; the stuff was good; that’s why he only gave up 7 earned runs in 6 innings. Not to worry.
KC is a better ball club than the Tigers. The Tigers might yet win the Central, but if they were to pull it out, a better team lost. I haven’t seen so much uppercut swinging since my high school baseball team. Miggy is politely going through the motions. Tori continues his ride into the sunset, and AJax remains under the spell of the Wicked Witch from wherever. Virginia Cavaliers will have top billing for me tomorrow night.
Good luck Max I hope our guys score enough runs for you to win. Kudos to Julio for the insignificant slammy, though it was fun to watch. The new Lefty mad his Daddy proud.

Has Holaday caught Verlander yet this year?

I was thinking the same Greg. That we have 3 regulars with serious uppercut swings– our whole infield (minus Cabby who should be uppercutting) are looking like they could perforate any dome in the league. Let’s not forget Torii who might help this team if he goes on the DL
