Thursday’s lineups: Tigers at White Sox

Miguel Cabrera apparently (I’m not in Chicago this week) feels well enough to return to first base after two days at DH and a day off in between. Meanwhile, Alex Avila gets the night off with lefty Chris Sale starting. So, too, does Austin Jackson, which is odd with the righty-lefty matchup until you consider that Jackson is 2-for-30 with 12 strikeouts for his career against Sale. Rajai Davis moves to center, with J.D. Martinez in left, the combination of which could make for some interesting routes in left-center.

Not holding my breath. ….facing an actual ace tonight in Sale not like our pseudo aces we have. I’d be extraordinarily happy to be wrong.

“I definitely wanted him out there,” Ausmus said. “I know he would always tell me he was good, but he looked good from the side. He didn’t look like he was losing any of his stuff, and he’s our guy. He really is.”
111 pitches. .A rested bullpen.It was enough

El T, what was the situation at 111 pitches thrown??

2 outs. De Aza had a RBI single with the 111. One on/ two runs scored in the inning.

Well if that is actually true then I question your ability to manage and your thought process. Because in 5+ innings 8 hits 4 walks a hit batter and a homerun isnt exactly what I call “looking good” and I guess he wasn’t losing his stuff because with the exception of the first inning he NEVER had it.

Prediction: “Raggie” Davis won’t get the ball out of the infield. I am wrong about 99% of the time, and often have crow on my menu.

Greg

Verlander reached 98.9 Averaged 95.5 . The speed is there according to brookbaseball.net. He is lacking command and trust in the curve.
I dont buy the good /bad woman explanation. He was great in 2012( second for Cy Young) and he was already dating Upton.
In the end , the whole point of working hard to reach the top and to remain there is being able to date someone like her .

I hope that’s not the whole point of working hard is to date a pin-up model.

If Upton is to blame . Why the newly married with his high school love , Scherzer, is also failing lately?

Looking forward! Tonight we face an ace, but baseball is ironic and we’re due….i saw big tigers victory tonight. We have the personnel to win this division, by a wide margin!

say, not saw.

And Evan when I snap my fingers you will wake up and continue to say positive things on the blog about our Tigers for the next 48 hours. “Snap!!!!!” Go Tigers!!!!!!

Thanks for spittin’ a little optimism Evan. We sure could use a dose of that backed up by a Tiger’s team starting to play some decent ball. Sure has been a miserable couple of weeks. Was is really just a few day’s ago we were in the same position the White Sox are now — going for a sweep?

Vintage verlander? maybe. But most of the time a huge mistake:
“I thought if we could get a lead with Verlander on the mound, the way he was pitching, we’d be in good shape,” Ausmus said. About the bunting call.

Spot on El T. After 111, gave Ian the best chance to get us an out and back in the dugout with a 3-1 game. After the DP, JV certainly deserved one chance to hold the score right there. Not three more batters for four chances.

About what these players, managers and tv analyst say….blah blah blah. Old JV may of deserved a chance this one is not real objective about his abilities right now. 5 runs, 5 runs, 9 runs 3 runs, 6 runs and 7 runs.
.
Just poured myself a stiff drink, hopefully that will make it less painful. Yes they are driving me to drink.

I’ll be joining you shortly. it feels more tolerable with Rum & Coke.
Davis & Kinsler are really bringing the team down right now.
I can’t quite understand why Kinsler can get this awful. He is a good ball player. Davis I can understand.
Any word on Dirks?
Still think they should inject a little Ezekiel on the wheel.
With the way these guys are playing I am starting to really look forward to seeing fresh faces, ie, Moya or Travis or McCann

they say that if his name is said 3x in a single thread, a status update will appear!

Dirks!

Well if Sale continues to get that low pitch called a strike (which is not a strike) it’s going to be a long long night.

Ump is not calling high strike for Max.

Well we won’t get no hit? That’s a plus.

Vmart homers from the RIGHT SIDE. There are some good things going on right now ya’ll!!

Not enough my friend. The way this team hits that may be all we get tonight. And that will not be enough.

Man does that Gprdon Beckham ever square up on the ball. He has become a very good player.

Brad can say what he wants but he was clearly wrong leaving JV in. The game was in the bag anyway but there is no way you leave the guy in AFTER he has given up some runs like that to go behind.
I can see if he has given up a run when he’s ahead and been in control but JV was pitched out as well.

Hernan Perez is knocking the door

What door? Kinsler is the starter and Romine is the backup

We might see history tonight. Max is dealing.

Max now faces the bottom of the Sox lineup. This is the part that scares me.

Max doing very very well!

What the hell is wrong with Kinsler? You couldn’t ask for a better place to hit (in front of Miggy). He does not even look set at the plate. Swinging late, hitting things off the handle. He just looks bad.
We finally get a break with an infield single 2 RBI hit.
Davis should not be playing IMO. That bunt attempt was as pitiful as I have ever seen. The best chance he had was the first pitch and he let it go by. No reason for him to telegraph the bunt either. I love this guys’s speed but I question his work ethic. I don’t think he is a real team guy. I expect we will see this rear its ugly head before too long.
Sale is a beauty.
Be neat to see a real quick inning for Max and chance to complete a game

It always amazes me especially a guy like Davis would not be able to bunt..

Holaday was my Tiger of the Game even before his 3rd hit.
He’s done a nice job behind the plate as well. Frames the ball very well and is very subtel when drawing his glove back into the strike zone.
As to the strike zone? Well two things, how can anyone expect pitchers to do well when the strike zone is the belt to the top of the knees?
Also—this umpire has been very poor tonight.

I guess Max figured it out. Get away night the boys had to be swinging. 3-hit shutout Max Scherzer!! Awesome job!!! Let’s see who catches Max next time.
Bryan Holaday is solid back there. Always sweet when the back up catcher can hit a division opponent. And we beat the Lakeland Sale Man.

Really awesome catch by Davis or is it?

Not……

Way to go Max! Who wudda thunk?

certainly not you!

Did you? If you say yes your probably being disingenuous. Chris Sale is great and Max hasn’t been good in the last 4 weeks.

Fabulous. And this one is an important victory considering they had to beat Sale who in my mind, is one of the best in the game.

Awesome, oh how we needed that!! Max, Vic and Holaday! What a great threesome tonight.

Rod said the tiger’s “ace” in reference to max. heheh c’mon JV you gunna let max be the ace?
.
Got my friend from minny coming over to watch the games this weekend. Lets get a series win!

I feel good about this weekend.

Well I feel better now leaving the Windy City with a win .

I’ll gladly take an 8-2 & 3.05 ERA pace the rest of the year, thank you.

It’s interesting over the last several weeks in this horrible stretch, the pitchers you’d think our hitters would have success over we have lost to and sometimes in a big way. The pitchers that should be tough they bared down and had some success. Sale, Lester, Iwakuma, Chavez, and Gray. I wonder if they just concentrate more? Yet pitchers with 4+ and 5+ eras they’ve had trouble.

Somebody has to kick kinsler in the A$$
We need a LHB OFer
Smyly has to become a #3 quality starter.
Avila has to hit more.
If Kinsler can’t hit in the 2 hole let’s try Nick. 9It’s not as crazy as it sounds) or AJ.
I think both of these guys would benefit from a steadier diet of fastballs over the plate.

Davis is getting sloppy on the bases. Kinsler doesn’t seem to run at all. i thought that was the general idea. (Course he has not been on base lately)
Is Don Kelly a significant upgrade of Nick at 3rd defensively? No, I don’t think so.

Don was getting an AB in prep for his next start.

I’ve yet to find the stat(s) that also suggest that. E.g. fielding % and RF per 9: .960/2.77 career and .955/2.74 in 2014 vs .955/2.09 for casty

I stand corrected, but will not eat crow. “Raggie” touches the outfield grassin his 2nd.AB because Gillespie was playing in. Love the speed, but Dan’s got it pegged. This guy is all about Rajai IMO. Would not waste a top spot on him. If he gets on base, it’s usually a plus. Enough of my nonsense.
1. 3-4-5 end up 1-12.
2. Quoting from Field of Dreams, “Go the distance, Max”.
3. Two Ribs from a guy who can hit it 450 ft., but settles for an infield single.
Kudos all the way to Max and his Farewell Tour. You do realize you’ll be seeing this show in Yankee Stadium next year, so let’s ride it while we can. Also Kudos to VMart for his continuing clutch hitting in general and off of Sale. And Special K’s to the man who’s a Holladay every day. He always contributes in a positive manner, and sadly so, it’s not much of a drop off from the starting catcher. Kinsler has seen his average drop 25 points in a week. Too much uppercut swinging, but steady, solid D.
Rookie’s 1 and 2 were just plain overmatched tonight. Sale is one tough hombre.
I’m sorry no one bought my Verlander demise because of Upton Assets Theory, but JV told us today not to worry; he’s working through everything. I’ll sleep like a babe tonight, dreaming about Upton. Hopefully, this first career complete game for Mad Max sends him out on a high note for the remainder of his Tiger career. I would think that Smyly would have a good outing against the Twinkies. Reality set in hard for them on May 1, when they had their own case of the Chris Shelton Complex. Capuano who?

Greg

Much needed win for the Tigers . Max gets a complete game and did a nice job getting the W. Focus is now on the next series with the Twins . We remember what happened the last time they were in the Motor City….Gotta turn this club around !!

Didn’t see tonight’s game, was at another show. It was some dude named Ringo Starr. The guy was older than me!
How was the strike zone tonight? We’ve been getting squeezed lately, so I wonder if the zone helped Max get the CG.
Some Rangers fans told me that Kinsler, well, does exactly what he’s doing now. They weren’t down on him but did say that he always started strong then would fade some. Overall they liked him.
The Verlander-Upton business belongs in the movie “The Natural” IMO. He’d benefit more from a normal strike zone. And getting his big bender back, that curveball that seems to fall from the sky.

Yellahommah

Regarding the strike zone it was fair and a little tight east/west The ump was call calling the low ball a strike and I mean low as not exactly a strike (woulda bee a great strike zone for Rick). Max was just very efficient last night got some weak swings early in the count 6 pitch first inning.

Missed the game last night – my 7 year old all-star baseball playing son broke his arm running around the playground with his buddies – pretty crappy start to summer and losing out on his baseball season will crush him. I was able to update him that VMart hit another dinger and he was pleased. While still loopy he told me he wanted a bat like Austin Jackson’s, only smaller. Funny what the happy juice can make you bring up. He woke up this morning telling me he went for a double, guess the drugs are still in him but as you can tell, he loves the game of baseball – guess we will be watching a lot of it this summer, so I need those Tigers to create some magic this weekend. He says he is a Reds fan, but secretly I think he loves my Tigers.

dang it that’s a bummer!

What a bummer a broken arm.

All I can say is “it’s about time, Max.” Very happy for him. Sale is no slouch, either, but we got to him.

I thought Rajai caught the ball. It appeared to hit the end of his glove and go in. I can’t fault Rajai for not being able to bunt. That’s on the coaching staff. He didn’t even look like he ever practiced it. Lucky for him the infield hit worked the same as the bunt. I really like Rajai and think he’s a tremendous asset for the team. Gotta work on the bunts, Rajai.
.
Not too sure how having 2 rookies on the left side will work out in the long run, but we’ll just have to wait and see. Holaday always seems to be a spark when he plays. As much as Alex gets beat up, you’d think they would play him a bit more.
.
Sorry to hear about your son, Tigergirl
.
And, for you history buffs, I came across this story. A bit long, but well worth it

http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/eticket/story?page=Dock-Ellis

love that story. i might take a trip for my birthday ;)

TigerGirl. I broke my wrist when I was 14. I was a Lefty Pitcher, and the break was so severe, it ended my baseball career. Also broke my left leg twice in two years when I was 9 and 10. This will give you and your son a chance to share lots of good baseball stories, plus the girls will want to help him carry things. Good luck!

Greg

geez Greg!

Haha Greg. I was going to say the same thing about the girls wanting to help him. He will get lots of sympathy from them for sure. But maybe a 7 year old boy wont think that is too cool. Do girls still have “cooties” at age 7? :) I cant remember. It has been too long.

On the bright side, Tiger Girl. He will probably be spending a lot more time with his mother this summer.
.
Max was great last night. Time to start a roll.
.
Go Tigers.

Best line on this blog, “He’s a Holladay every day”. Brad is still trying to figure his players out. And yes, I did think we would we would win 1-0 with Max pitching against Sale. I am not negative or sarcastic. Brad will not admit it but he will learn about JV and other all star pitchers that they never want to be taken out of a game. Reminds me of Sparky. A great win and hopefully this bad stretch is over. Go Tigers!

Now this is something I’ve given some thought to, and my take is that Avila’s 1st half 2011 offensive numbers were because pitchers hadn’t taken him seriously and they adjusted when they finally did take notice of the Tiger’s catcher. This happens all the time with any hitter at any defensive position. Since July of 2011, Alex’s offensive numbers are too consistent to continue thinking he’ll become a late bloomer at the plate. From this came my unfortunately misunderstood comment that “I don’t expect Avila to hit.”
It boils down to whether they can carry his bat. With the current lineup, no. Everyone says he calls a good game. I have no way of knowing whether that’s true or not. I wll say that there are other catchers in baseball and I’m sure a number of those also call good games.
Pre-emptive strike here: before anyone begins to lobby for Holaday to start, bear in mind that he’ll begin to gain the attention of opposing pitchers. I do think he has the tools to be an everyday starter, and have thought that for a couple of years now. Should he get more starts this year? Absolutely. Ask Max how Holaday did last night.

Well he should certainly play more often as Avila’s backup. I don’t think he presents well as a regular, but that is based on not very much data.

You can manipulate the stats til your blue in the face and reach different conclusions. I just think he gets hit too much and needs to sit and let the other guy catch more often. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: I am very afraid for his health.

You are right to be. All the concern seems to be about the concussion aspect but his knees are shot.
He has one more year at most behind the plate. Hit the ball well tonight though.
The veterans have not come through tonight. Another poor at bat by Hunter and yet another in a long streak by Kinsler. Without Kinsler playing like he should be able to this team is going nowhere. He is very important in this lineup.
Obviously Miggy’s DP took the wind completely out of the Tigers’ sails.
He is not having a very good day at the plate.
Not sure why our guys simply don’t hit. This has been going on far too long.
