Monday’s lineups: Tigers at White Sox

Looks like Miguel Cabrera is in the starting lineup tonight, albeit as the designated hitter. Brad Ausmus was noncommittal about the DH slot when asked about it last night, noting the risk of having Cabrera sit around for a few innings and then get up to bat with his hamstring cold, but they’ll give it a shot.

TIGERS (numbers off Hector Noesi)

  1. Ian Kinsler, 2B (2-for-10, double, walk)
  2. Don Kelly, RF (1-for-2)
  3. Miguel Cabrera, DH (2-for-5, HR, K)
  4. Victor Martinez, 1B (0-for-1)
  5. J.D. Martinez, LF (1-for-2, double, K)
  6. Nick Castellanos, 3B (0-for-1, K)
  7. Austin Jackson, CF (0-for-1, walk)
  8. Alex Avila, C
  9. Eugenio Suarez, SS

P: Rick Porcello

WHITE SOX (career numbers off Porcello)

  1. Adam Eaton, CF
  2. Gordon Beckham, 2B (12-for-29, 4 doubles, HR, 2 walks, 5 K’s)
  3. Conor Gillapsie, 3B (7-for-17, double, HR, 2 K’s)
  4. Jose Abreu, 1B
  5. Adam Dunn, DH (7-for-22, double, 2 HR, 3 walks, 7 K’s)
  6. Alexei Ramirez, SS (8-for-47, HR, 2 K’s)
  7. Dayan Viciedo, RF (6-for-23, double, HR, walk, 2 K’s)
  8. Alejandro De Aza, LF (6-for-31, double, 3 walks, 4 K’s)
  9. Tyler Flowers, C (0-for-10, walk, 4 K’s)

P: Hector Noesi

Kelly and JD in. Glad to see Hunter sitting a bit.
Be nice to see Avila get something going.

The Tigers are 29 in SO , 24 in BB and 8 in OBP but fourth in wOBA. 271 in avg for second. 8th in XB. But 12th in RB and 13th in runs even if their avg with runners on and RISP is the fourth.Slg 4 and 8th.
Their aggressive approach means they have little opportunity to SO or get a walk. They swing at the first pitch, usually a strike or near the zone.

They have no problem making contact, but they dont slug or runs fast enough to score more.
The real problem? 5-9 have been unable to hit. Avila´s OBP means nothing since they need a HR to take him home.
122 out of 220 RBI belong to Miguel, Victor , Kinsler and Hunter

Worst pen era in all of baseball.

I have a dream. Tonight begins a 14-0 win streak through the Central. Can you imagine what that would be like?

I had a dream. It was only a dream.

It’s a beautiful dream.

Whoa–pretty “polite baseball” in that 1st inning for us. 10 pitches for Noesi?
I imagine RP will be closer to 20.

Great start …you say polite I say really crappy at bats and a lead off triple for them.

Really really great start. Honestly!

Ricky just isn’t much of a 2 strike pitcher

Not far off Dan 21 pitches by Rick.

It’s a sorry start. Hope they get it going.

Our guys seem to struggle a bit in the 1st. Lately, so has the offense.

Will they let this 5+ era Noesi with 1 win in 2 years get the better of them?????? I hope not.

Geez Rick—way too many pitches. We need you to go deep in this game

Are their heads in this game? Two errors…a few hits and the pitching is so so.

At least Rick kept his cool.

Ausmus about Nathan:”If there’s a bridge that needs to be crossed at some point down the road, I’ll cross it then,” he said. “But right now, I’m not even considering it.”

maybe he needs a cortisone shot.

2 dingers so far but our hitters are making Noesi look better than he is.
I’ve pretty much given up on ever thinking Avila will be the MLB hitter that I once figured he was destined to be.

Suarez is a G!

I don’t see why Rick is throwing everything over the heart of the plate. It should be a lot worse than a 1 run ball game

Because he’s not that good.

I guess that I made my point. Now a 3 run game with an offense that is not delivering.
They are killing Rick now.

Nothing like getting that shut down inning from Porcello after your team gets you back in it. This team just doesn’t have it not as they are constructed. And now Rick is just lobbing it up there.

old habits die hard

Anothr case of our guys being unable to get a shutdown inning. Very frustrating

Well I don’t know if this group of guys have it in them to come back or if the pitiful tigers pitchers will even allow them to. But before this season started I was only slightly worried about pitching, only because I wasn’t excited about the Fister trade. I was not really worried about the rest of them. How wrong was I? What I was worried about was the offense and getting rid of so much power and RBI guys. I know some people were excited about this new look team because of the speed value and at times we’ve had it. But really I think my original worries about these hitters are coming to fruition. I just don’t see how this team can win with this hitting if the pitchers aren’t a whole lot better.

porcello not acting like the way he has the past 1.5 seasons.
We can still win this though. The sox aren’t that good honestly.

There ya go – Vmart #15. C’mon 2 runs lets own up – we’ve got the hitting that’s for sure.

And another error when the offense gets em close. Lord have mercy!

And another shut down inning after scoring……:(

Kinsler is watching his BA slip quite a bit from a few weeks ago. Not looking in control at the plate.
Kelly-Makes me want to have Torii back in the lineup.
Our pure LH hitters on this team are Kelly and Avila. That should strike fear in the hearts of fans (unfortunately Tiger fans).

Yes, his BA is dropping but he is hitting the ball right up to the warning track.

Ajax has far better numbers vs RHP. They should platoon him with a RHB

And Victor has far more power LH

I’m still watching.

Can we have a walkoff for a change.

Had Porcello kept the ball, no run scored after the misplay by JD. There was no chance at first. And tied game.
4.04 ERA

5 runs . The offense was there

This team just doesn’t have it. They can’t pitch and they hit very inconsistently. Granted umpire screwed Kinsler on that call. Jeff Nelson has actually done that quite a bit to the tigers (think Red Soxs series a few year ago in Fenway).
I’ve said it a thousand times this year if you can’t pitch and you can’t hit and you can’t field the ball well or consistently it’s going to be a rough year. I’m not sure I see it changing either…. No fire

If you can’t pitch or hit or field………..well, yeah.

I wish I had your optimism.

Gotta win these close ones, gentlemen. Torii, your job was to get Cabrera to the plate, not swing so hard you fell down. For a veteran, he sure can look like a rookie.
Breaks for both teams tonight. The winning run scored on a bouncer through the infield. Alex missed a game tying homer by about a foot.
Good bullpen work.

If the starting pitching EVER comes around, this team will look entirely different. It hinges on that.

Then they’ll stop hitting though.

The way things are going, it looks like it’s just a matter of time until they fall out of first place. They lost to another mediocre pitcher and the Indians are creaming Texas. Lead now down to 2 games.
Bullpen> what would San Diego want for Benoit?

tough one tonight fellas. dangit porcello. more importantly i wonder miggy’s status.

I’ve been termed optimistic several times now. I’m not particularly optimistic. I just don’t put so much weight on one game or a stretch of games. It’s a long season. I don’t like what I’m seeing lately just like everyone else, but this last three week period doesn’t spell doom. We’ve only played 60 games. This isn’t the NFL.

I was thinking the same about Torii. Did not understand that approach.
Our best bet would have been Rajai trying to steal 3rd. I knew we would not score him after the fly out. There was a play that must have been ruled foul off the foot of Kinsler (though I didn’t think it actually did) and I am still wondering why Rajai wasn’t coming on contact.
Kinsler was fooled on the pitch and should have been protecting—ball or strike, it was too close to take.
I thought we played a very poor game. A bit discouraging to see Casty whiffing twice I must say.
Suarez looks dependable.—so far.

1. The homer Power kept us in the game.
2. Reed had a great 8th. inning.
3. Miggy hits better at 75% than most at the top of their game.
Kudos to ES again. Romine knows he’s stuck to the pine absent any injury to A-HEEN-E-O.Ajax is showing signs of coming out of the dark. If Alex could cut down his SO’s, that in itself would help the team. He’s swinging better, but not with the power he needs to show. Was surprised that Raggie didn’t steal third. Poor JT did his best impression of Bozo the Clown in left field, albeit the fine catch in the late innings. My how we need a lefty power hitter other than VMart. Ricky P signed out early tonight, almost conceding defeat before the second inning. Who knows what version of JV shows up tomorrow night. I wished he were pitching with the same ease that he grants national interviews during games.

El T. When was the last time three men from V homered for one team in a game??

It has happened 4 times ever. Three times Miguel and the Tigers were involved.I will add details later

that is a very cool & fun list.
and welcome to the big leagues suarez!

Probably a couple of years ago with Magglio, Miggy and Carlos

Thanks El Tigre. First time was two weeks after Miguel’s arrival here.

Torii – what the heck? Swinging and falling down twice and making yourself look silly? We needed a base hit there. sure, a homerun would have been fantastic, but you ain’t hitting one with that swing – you should know better. Not that I blame Torii for the whole game, but that was just silly. The errors have been ridiculous lately.

huge fan of this A-HEEN-E-O fella. the question is whether he will be able to adjust to the adjustment the league makes on him. I think casty has made the adjustments. Making said adjustments at the MLB level is how we know you belong.

My Bad! Should be A-U-HEEN-EE-O

now if we can just get Jim Price to pronounce it right

Greg is saying my bad for Evan. Hmmm. Whatever.

I read a column, Henning, that suggests the Tigers just aren’t all that good. Well, open the sun roof and let some light in! All anybody talked about over the winter was how the Tigers had become worse but now that we see it, no one can accept it?
On opening day, I posted here that the Tigers would not win the division. I chose KC, which may or may not happen, but the point is I didn’t chose Detroit.
Players and fans going around all disappointed need to turn that around and realize that this is a scrap. A real dogfight. They have to play hard and we have to root hard. It’s never easy but this season will be more challenging than most.
Many teams have had hot and cold streaks, as always. The Tigers had their hot streak first and raised expectations to unsustainable levels. Now it’s evening out.
As they say, now it’s on.

Sorry I see both of you did have a faux pas on his name. The other night Mario and Rod almost decided to go with E-Money for him.

AHHN-DEE DIRKS. where the heck is my update!

I know you have been begging for an update, I almost forgot he was on the team it has been so long since we heard how he was doing

Jim Price can’t even get Cast-eh-yan-os correct. He drives me nuts but he at least openly gripes about the team and sees where it is going wrong, both in terms of mechanics and game behaviour.

At least Price is honest about the problems with the club . I can respect that about him . Tigers gotta start playing better and soon .

he has his strengths and weaknesses

Casty sounds like Nasty
on sounds like Ron without the R
os sounds goes without the g&e

He insists on pronouncing the ll’s

My name for Jim is “Say-it-twice Price”.
At least he has hit more homers than Rod Allen. Come to think of it so has Andrew Romine!

RIP Bob Welch, dead at 57, cause unknown. He was a fellow EMU alum, a few years behind me. Don’t expect to outlive guys in that age group.
The scouts came to see Bob Owchinko and came away more impressed with Welch.
Both men made the bigs.

Sad! Didn’t he pitch the last season with 25+ wins? And I didn’t know you were an EMU alum Rich! (i went there for a year, lived there for 7)

There’s a reason I call you homey.🙂

Maybe Grant Balfour needs a change of scenery? Maybe the Phillies would pay for someone to take Papelbon? Why oh why did the Tigers let Benoit get away? If DD decided to go cheap on the bullpen, it is paying off now.

Can we trade Nathan for Balfour?!?

Balfour went back to his former team. Perhaps he needs a total change of scenery. I wouldn’t mind having him and Nathan both. Two entirely different pitching approaches.

Something to keep in mind: the current closer situation is far better than it was in 2012 when Valverde lost it at the END of the season. Remember going into the playoffs without a reliable closer? Gettin’ to the WS was a freakin’ miracle.

I don’t know what the career numbs say but I recall a lot thumpings on JV from the ChiSox. i hope he has all his stuff (and that includes his brain) working well today.

Career numbers are career numbers. JV has great career numbers. It’s 2014 and maybe his last three starts will give an indication of what will happen. Or maybe not. Nobody knows!! Just hope we get a game in tonight.
