Sunday’s lineups: Tigers at Mariners

Seattle 002

The Tigers have their standard anti-lefty lineup out against Roenis Elias, including Bryan Holaday behind the plate and Danny Worth at shortstop. Rajai Davis moves back to leadoff for a day.

The Mariners, meanwhile, load up with left-handed hitters against Max Scherzer, a strategy that worked for the Indians two starts ago. The only right-handed hitters in Seattle’s lineup are Mike Zunino and Willie Bloomquist. That means Robinson Cano remains out with the sore hand, but still looming on the M’s bench.

We need Max to ‘ACE” one.

Weird things happen on Sunday—-the bottom of the lineup comes through like champs today.

Curious Question of the day—would you trade Castellanos for Moustakas -even up?

naw Mous isn’t good defensively or offensively. cast might be good offensively.

I like Casty for his potential. But as far as the Moose goes I think he is superior defensively and his LHB would look real good (if it worked) in a tiger lineup.
That being said, I Stick with Nick the Stick!

There goes the no-hitter.

Not off to a very good start………

Jmart should have been utilized in this day game AJ does’t hit lefties and tori not hitting. Take your pick

3 innings done. Same old stuff. Max way high in pitch count. Tiger bats sleeping.

61 pitches through 3 ……yep ….tigers hitters can’t figure this guy out 2nd time through. Argh.
.

The bats are sleeping because Tiger starters are putting them to sleep -along with their fielders.
Max is battling. Holaday is pretty solid behind the dish. He needs to play more and Avila needs to sit. I think the guy is a physical wreck.
Not sure why our hitters seem to be flummoxed by average or inexperieinced pitching.

Not only are they not getting hits they look pitiful doing it.

Tiger starters don’t seem to know what to throw. I like the guys that have a plan and execute it quickly rather than look like they are wondering what might work this pitch.
JV used to be that way, Fister always has. Anibal is about the only guy I trust in that rotation right now.

AJ going to keep his Ks under 3 this game?

Haven’t we been saying the same thing for years? So many Cy’s on the mound against us. Poor clutch hitting. Maybe it’s just me getting too old. Do other teams go through this? perhaps our expectations are too high.

I think our expectations are high. But I also think they are not unjustified.
BTW, Stephen Moya is really heating up for the SeaWolves.

Is it high expectations to expect more than 2 hits through 5 innings off a guy who entered the day with a 4+ era? I think they look tired and uninterested. Can’t keep tipping your cap to everyone.

I kinda think if they score on Max this inning it will be very, very difficult to come back.

Well- that certainly is a bad start to the inning.

Can’t pitch, can’t hit….won’t win. As usual Max gets ahead of hitters then throws pitches well out of the zone then is forced to throw one down the middle. Guess he’s not as wonderful as he thinks he is. You want to be second highest paid pitcher prove you deserve it. His last three outings have been very bad to today not good enough. Prove it Max so far you stink.

I bet Torii hopes we don’t lose this by one run

Their minds are already back at home. Long trip. Tired

They are playing, quite literally, like it is “getaway day”, or perhaps “giveaway day”
They have no energy and seem resigned to accept mediocrity and hope for better in Comerica.
The Blue Jays will punish the Tigers in this upcoming series.

Bloomquist, a .240 hitter, is killing them this weekend. Today he has as many hits as the whole Tiger team. Kinsler has done nothing this weekend. Saturday he left 7 runners on base.Only Tiger hits today are from 2 rookies?

A Quality Start. As one of the announcers of ESPN says, that means a 4.50 ERA

No more

They are literally putting me to sleep. Need a nap. Bye, bye.

Hurry! Hurry! Swing at the first pitch. It’s da plane. Da plane is waiting.

Only reason to watch now is to see if they throw Knebel.

Silly to throw Max in the 7th. Totally. The only thing that can come out of it is not positive.

Unbelievable.

Yeah–I guess Max may have gotten something positive out of that Brad. Keep him long enough to rack up his pitches and get yarded by a non-hitter after you have nothing at all left in the tank or to pitch for.

Aces do that….guess he’s not.

This poor offense is just too much for the great Max Scherzer.

A rookie pitcher up from AA wins this game . Tigers are not able to score any runs and lose 4-0 . What is wrong with this picture . Hope they are ready for Toronto and Boston . Something tells me they are not !!

Legit mail in today. Okay, go get on the plane guys. See ya Tuesday.

1. No one got hurt.
2. We got our 27 outs.
3. Ajax only struck out twice.

Even the Aces don’t win the game. Give the lefty his due, but can you never make an adjustment or try to work the count? Our superstar strikes out in the first inning. Their retreads and remakes make things happen. Every starter we have has had this problem of 60 pitches by the third inning, while our opponent pitcher gets by with 12-13 pitchwes an inning. I’m sorry to say all my Tiger friend and fans; we can’t hit above average pitching. we can’t survive with 4 dependable hitters out of nine, and that might be a stretch. And I wish someone would tell Rod to shut up. All the ifs and what might have beens don’t win games. This team is worn out or overrated; not sure which. Build me up guys and ladies; I’m about to hit rock bottom.

Greg

if ifs and buts were candies and nuts….
.
but seriously greg, this team is underperforming. and our record and standing in the division is great. So the way I see it, brighter days ahead and probably a playoff birth. Once you get one of those, and a little luck, you hoist. your owner finally gets his hardware. you get a parade.

I guess our hitters couldn’t do anything after a week and a half of cap tipping carpel tunnel ya know.

Kinsler/Migy/VMart did an 0’fer. No way you win a game when that happens on this team.
The team has very little collective confidence.
Got to get JMart in. Can’t wait every year for AJ to “find it”. I would not be surprised to see him made available in July.
Tiger fans are going to see some yardballs this week.

Who will want him if he can’t hit? Thank goodness they have tomorrow off. I need a day off from watching them. Boston lost 10 in a row and they have bounced back. Maybe they are just what the doctor ordered, or not. We’ll see.

I think AJ is looked upon as a top tier centre-fielder. Personally, I do not agree. But there are teams that could use one. The problem of course is who then would we use?
But I just don’t think management has to be tethered to players who constantly are trying to achieve their perceived potential.

There was talk over the winter about the Tigers not being as good this year. Expectations were down, but the 27-12 start may have fooled everyone. They’re not that good, and they’re not as bad as they look at times. This was never going to be a runaway. That’s two months down and four to go. The first order of business is to get some consistent starting pitching. The entire team feeds off of that, on the field and off.

good comment. I still think this pen would be eaten alive in the postseason.

one last comment. what do ya’ll think of the new hitting coach compared to llyod mac?

Not sure there is any. The guys who did well under Mac still are, those who are streaky remaining streaky, those who are below average remain there. At least that’s what it seems like to me.

Tigers 2nd in MLB in hitting but 10th in runs scored.
A couple more telling stats:
Last in baseball in triples and 24th in bases on balls.
not hitting the gaps, leaving men on, and not having good at bats are results of this.

I “think” I heard Dan & Jim say we lead with doubles. Last in triples does not surprise me because the two most apt to hit them are too slow to run out a triple. Grandy used to hit them but he had a lot more speed. We get men on base and strand, strand, strand. Clutch hitting appears to evaporate at the most crucial points of the game.
.

Avila and Holaday are hitting about .210. We’re pretty much stuck with that.
Romine and Worth, however, are hitting.195.
There is no way on this planet that DD can let that continue. No way.

They need a day off – time to get collected boys and get back to winning

But we are in a triples park. We have Kinsler, Davis, Castellanos who should be able to leg out balls (provided they hit the gaps). My point is they are not hitting the gaps. they are also not drawing bases on balls (Suarez drew 4 yesterday for Toledo).
This points to lack of discipline at the plate. Means swinging at pitchers’ pitches, means not driving the ball into the gaps.
