Friday’s lineups: Tigers at Red Sox (weather permitting)

Sprinkles have been coming down off and on at Fenway Park this afternoon, but the heavy stuff isn’t expected to arrive until later tonight. Once it does, it’s hard to see them playing through it. The key tonight is going to be getting five innings in before that.

Interesting decision by manager Brad Ausmus to start Alex Avila against the lefty Jon Lester. Since Avila hasn’t played since Tuesday, however, Ausmus said he wanted to get him in regardless of the opposing starter.

“It really didn’t matter who was going to pitch,” Ausmus said. “Alex had two days off. He was going to play.”

In Avila’s defense, he’s 4-for-10 with a double and three strikeouts off Lester for his career.

Torii Hunter, meanwhile, gets the start in right field. Don’t expect him to go tumbling over the bullpen fence again — not in a regular season game, and not with more than 120 games remaining.

if i saw torii go over that fence again I’d it

^should read: “I’d lose it”

ESPN has Avila as 3-for-6 with 1 double and 3 Ks off Lester.

2 Ks, I mean

Jason uses baseball-reference. Postseason numbers included

Ah, okay

Let the circus of Fenway begin.. crap always seems to happen here.
.

Well another bang up job by an umpire 4th pitch to Alex wasn’t even close to a strike shoulda been a walk with a run. Then a strikout. ….always something at fenway

6″ above the ground, barely above his ankles.

Buck Cannel called it the automatic strike. 3-0 , that is a strike . Especially for an Ace

Sorry not sure what you mean if a pitch it 4 inches off the ground and off the plate its a ball. Ace or not. Scherzer is an ace and he didnt get the 3rd pitch to Sizemore called a strike that was right down the middle. Looks to me more like ump cost Scherzer 6 pitches and the tigers st least one run.

It is not right but has been part of baseball since ever like the ghost tag at 2B

That one against Worth was ball before the talk with the ump

Definitely 2 different strike zones.

Yep… is it me or has the homeplate umpiring in Tiger’s games been really bad over the past week?

Wow! Nice K inning by Max.

With AJ at bat that second time, he’s gotta to have a green light with a 3-0 count, two on and Avila on deck against Lester. Let a fast ball go right over the heart of the plate. You gotta swing at that given those circumstances.

The Red Sox curse has struck! Max has faced the minimum, Lester is pitching decent and the rain starts!!!

I’m sure this is what the Suxs were looking for….to get Max out of the game….they knew this was coming and they knew they wouldn’t be able to get it in.

Max had electric stuff and went through the order relatively easy and the rains start,
Tigers should have had another run there but the Ump screwed the road team again!

Here they are.

Can Nick get a hit?

No.

Thanks Ump for making me look bad

A change up against Papi.. Does Benoit ring something

that grand slam by papi last year. i was messed up mentally for weeks. probably the worst night of sleep i’ve had in the past 2 years that night.

I know what you mean . Alot of us were wondering what went so wrong so fast…..

Is Max falling apart here in the 6th

92 pitches? get through it max!

nothing like fenway park to boo your catcher when he approaches the pitcher to talk

I can’t believe they are sending him back out? Hope it doesn’t backfire!

Can’t believe Davis didnt catch that…
.

And the circus begins. ……pop up that should of been caught…a balk and a hit batter……doesn’t matter the year or how good were playing something always happens.

He does not bunt. I like that

Not even the ump was sure about the balk. He needed time to call it

Kinsler is by far a better defender than Infante. No way does Omar make that play.

Yes!

Congratulations, Tigers!!!! You earned it.

1. ReKroJobaJo does its magic. A little slack for Re since Kro got the DP.
2. Three DP’s keep Sox rallies from heating up.
3. One clutch hit was all we needed.
Kudos to the Mad Man; I just wish he had thought 144M was enough. Offense took a breather. We were lucky to get him so high in pitches. Sox Pen was equal to the task. Nine straight on the road. Play just .500 for the rest of the way and you have 88 wins. Nice work, my team with the old English D on the front!

Greg

Him being Lester.

Seemed like the easiest 1-0 win I remember. Only 1 guy in their lineup that’s at all worrisome.

A huge win at Fenway . Get ready for the next 2 nights and every run has to count…

I’m liking this shutdown bullpen.
You can tell your grandkids about the time you saw the Tigers win 1-0 at Fenway Park. They won’t believe you.

till tomorrow at 6:45! What a great night! Even got to listen to the game in the car FM radio a little bit too – felt good. I wonder if Papi was disappointed he didn’t get to see his friend Phil tonight?

Phil was no where to be found wa he ??
