Wednesday’s lineups: Tigers at Orioles

Camden Yards 010

It’s weather day at Camden Yards, so it figures that there would be a change from the hot, sunny days we’d been enjoying. It’s cool, damp and drizzly today as Justin Verlander prepares to take on the O’s.

It’s also a day that Torii Hunter has off. Rajai Davis tops the batting order, with Ian Kinsler batting second. J.D. Martinez gets the start in right. Don Kelly starts at third base, with Bryan Holaday behind the plate (surprisingly) for Verlander. Danny Worth starts at short. It’s a somewhat unusual lineup for the Tigers against a right-hander, but Brad Ausmus said yesterday that the last-minute move by the O’s to start Kevin Gausman over Wei-Yin Chen probably wouldn’t alter his lineup much.

TIGERS

  1. Rajai Davis, LF
  2. Ian Kinsler, 2B
  3. Miguel Cabrera, 1B
  4. Victor Martinez, DH
  5. J.D. Martinez, RF
  6. Austin Jackson, CF
  7. Don Kelly, 3B
  8. Bryan Holaday, C
  9. Danny Worth, SS

P: Justin Verlander

ORIOLES (career numbers off Verlander)

  1. Nick Markakis, LF (12-for-45, 4 doubles, triple, 5 walks, 10 K’s)
  2. Manny Machado, 3B (2-for-9, double, walk, 3 K’s)
  3. Adam Jones, CF (4-for-30, double, HR, walk, 9 K’s)
  4. Chris Davis, 1B (4-for-21, 2 walks, 10 K’s)
  5. Nelson Cruz, DH (5-for-28, double, 2 HR, walk, 8 K’s)
  6. J.J. Hardy, SS (8-for-31, double, 3 HR, walk, 6 K’s)
  7. Steve Clevinger, C (0-for-3, 2 K’s)
  8. Jonathan Schoop, 2B (0-for-3)
  9. David Lough, LF (2-for-16, double, 3 K’s)

P: Kevin Gausman

Go get em boys!

I understand that this Gausman is the O’s wunderkind.

wow they all say “O” during the national anthem huh? kinda dumb but whatever

I watched the game last night for the Miggy home run, but just heard the radio call by Dan Dickerson – classic!

agreed. i could only find replays with the Mario/Rod audio so I had to que up the radio broadcast and FF to the 9th……for my family to listen to during breakfast, of course!

Terrible strikezone again.

homeplate ump suuuuuckin today

Yes sucks again. …..JV best get the same outside and low calls!
.
They said Gausman was a #1 pick.

Guess I have the answer. ….JV not getting the same generous strike zone….even Rod mentioned it and they rarely if ever comment.

this ump needs to be tossed!

Miggys batting average now over .300 at .301

the squeeze!

Oh, brother. How dare I get excited too soon. The Orioles won’t go down easy.

Oh, Justin. Get him out of there.

Told ‘em not to retaliate. Like a yard full of roosters. That was dumb.

Well he runs up his pitch count and nibble at the outer edges, they foul off a ton of pitches off of him not getting the swings and misses..he although stuck out a few today he isn’t really doing that anymore. He’s just very inefficient ….I don’t know I just don’t have the same confidence I used to.

Verlander is postsurgical, just like Cabrera. It takes time.
Wish they’d have performed surgery on his brain before he threw that one behind Cruz.

He’s been like this for a few years now. Its not all surgery I don’t think. His whip was aweful last year and this year its even worse. Dont get me wrong I like him as a pitcher hes good but with all the baserunners hes always searching for trouble

Well things have settled down a little. The question is whether JV now goes back out there for the 8th. Or will it be “everyday AL”?

You mean 7th

Here we go 2 on 1 out for Joba…..come on!

Ok 2 down…one more Joba

I think the rules for deciding whether a pitcher wins or loses a game are wrong. Last night Smyly clearly carried the load but got no decision. Today JV nearly blew a 6-run lead and now the Tigers are in danger of losing the game because of that.

Sometimes it doesn’t make a lot of sense

That is why the consensus is that W-L area meaningless stat for pitchers. ERA is a far better measure not to mention FIP.
QS too by the way.3 runs in six iP is a 4.5 ERA

Thats it walk the bases loaded and a guy hitting .176 no less.

Whew, Joba made it out of that mess.

Sweep. ….
.
But honestly how do some of these umpires have jobs? He was brutal

AWFUL

I’m feeling terrific about this team between today’s 4th inning, and yesterday’s 9th inning!

Huge sweep in Baltimore. Makes up for the losses last Friday and Sunday . Tigers now have to gear up for Boston ..

Three for today:
1. 8-9 step up big time. Worth can hit better than Romine; Romine not that much better defensively.
2. The add on HR by Rajai; pitching with a two run lead is a lot easier than protecting just one.
3. The Aljobajo guys get it done, though creating palpitations for Tiger fans.
Kudos to Miggy for the big RBI single to get us going. I don’t usually gripe about umps, but the new guy got under JV’s skin. Cost him an extra 15 pitches on missed called strikes. Marinez impresses less and less; the Hessman Syndrome maybe.
Running game made a good contribution today.
Why we swept the Orioles:
1. Kept Markakis and Davis in check. Nothing from their leadoff hitter in all three games.
2. Good contributions in all three games from parts of the bottom three.
3. Miggy grinding his way back to being Miggy.
Starting pitching was excellent in two of three. Bullpen held it’s own in all three. It’s fantastic to sweep any team on the road, much less the O’s.

The Tigers continue to surprise (me) by winning a game I thought they’d lose when it got to 6-5. The various ways they’ve scored runs in this series is eye opening.
I don’t mind bullpen palpitations since the bottom line is getting through the inning. Nobody’s pen blows away the opposition on a regular basis.
They might want to give Kelly a few more of those outfield reps.
.
Watching Fister and he’s doing very well.

Good for Doug hope he has a great season .

In case they didn’t mention it on the Detroit feed, today’s HP umpire is a rookie.

JD martinez was released by the Astros. That is all we need to know.
Verlander FIP was good but just higher than his ERA. After the game 3.15 ERA -3.17 FIP

Yes, the Tigers need to find that versatile OF if Dirks is not ready and available in late June. Martinez is a stop-gap like most call ups during the season. I’d like to see Fields or Carrera called up for a few weeks to get them a taste of MLB pitching. I believe the SS position has stabilized after the release of GonZo. Romine and Worth are adequate at the dish and above average in the field. The last remaining piece is the Bullpen, if we can stabilize until Hanrahan arrives, then we will see what progresses over the middle “trimester” of the 2014 season.

Carrera is on DL . Probably, out for weeks. According to Wagner from the Toledo Blade

Daniel Fields has broken hand. Out 6-8 weeks.

Has anyone noticed that the bullpen is rounding into shape?

From all the comments on all the sites I read, no. I think they are though. Pitchers will always have a bad game now and then its the nature of the beast. Problem is most fans overreact to small sample sizes.

Really enjoyed today’s win. Am watching the replay right now. Yea, I love the 3 run bombs, but watching the double steals, squeeze and contributions from the bottom of the order made for a fun day of baseball. Can you believe we swept the Orioles in their own ball park? Now, on to Boston!

I prefer the double steals and suicide squeezes too, unless the 3 run bomb is in a two out 9th inning, 1-0 deficit situation :-) Not much sweeter than that. Danny Worth finally gets a legitimate chance to play. Happy for him. With all the various styles of offensive weaponry on this team, it is the perfect situation for a guy like Worth to comfortably play in. No unnecessary pressure. Just relax and take advantage of the opportunities when they present themselves.
Boston is almost always a tough mental challenge for this team. Tigers just need to continue to play solid baseball and beat them. Go Tigers!
