Saturday’s lineups: Tigers at Royals

KC 062

With back-to-back left-handed starters going for the Royals this weekend, Brad Ausmus planned on resting Alex Avila for one game and playing him in the other. He chose to rest him Saturday and bring him back Sunday for Justin Verlander’s start. Thus, the Tigers will field an all-righty lineup against Royals lefty Danny Duffy, who has allowed a .272 average (126-for-464) and .825 OPS against right-handed hitters in his career, compared with .250 and .711 for lefties.

Royals manager Ned Yost told Dick Kaegel that Duffy should be good for 75-85 pitches tonight in his first start for Kansas City this season. He has been working out of the bullpen since his call-up April 12. Ausmus, meanwhile, said Drew Smyly could stretch out his pitch count a bit tonight if he’s going well.

The Royals lineup originally posted early this afternoon had Salvador Perez in it, but he’s now out, reportedly with a bruised left shin. Brett Hayes gets the start behind the plate.

A reminder: Tonight’s game is on Fox Sports 1, not Fox Sports Detroit. If you go to FSD, you’ll find something else. If you don’t get FS1, you have time to improvise.

lineup looks good. just wondering though….why play alex tomorrow with the seasoned pitcher when tonight you have the youngster on the mound? not to mention he hit well yesterday…

Did you check to see if he has had any special success against Vargas??

IP/G Porcello 6.4. Scherzer 6.5
Leading the team in OPS? Austin Jackson

Nice, you let Duffy off the hook with a pop out, force out and foul out! his pitch count was getting close to 40 after 2 innings. Let’s hope he doesn’t gain confidence now. VMart had a nice double down the line to lead off and then nothing. Come on Drew!!!

He is supossed to throw no more than 65 pitches

Day game after night game. AA will be there. 2 for 8 1 BB HR 2 SO

Ian has to pay better attention than that…..

Miggy being Miggy. that’s baserunning!!!!

Another lacksidasical (spelling moment for the Tigers by Doc.

Two great catches by our OF, though.

Is Kinsler having a stroke? That’s the 2nd dumb move in Two innings??!???

Dan& Jim said it wasn’t a mistake.
.
What a fab throw by Raji. A beauty.
.

Smyly´s ERA going down fast. His ERA plus, better than RP

That was brutal. With 2 out and Miggy coming up????
Ouch.
That was about as ugly as anything the Prince might do.
Holaday holds on to his mask, doesn’t look at Hosmer. He is pressing defensively. Threw one away at 3rd the other day, let a ball go foul his last game when it would have been an easy (and important) out.
Our OF has saved the day today. Smyly’s numbers may look good today but he has been helped out greatly.
Worth does not belong up here.

Never be the third out at 3B

Miggy wincing a bit coming around 1st?
Nice break VMart taking 2nd–gotta take advantage. Time for AJ to show why he is a middle of the lineup hitter.
This is a critical point in the game and the outcome may be determined on wheter the Tigers score or the Royals prevent them from same.

Call the bullpen, great game but he was in the middle of home plate with all but Buttler

:-) Smyly!

This is the very kind of game that can define the back end of a bullpen.
It would be very nice to see JoeJoba do their things.

joba does his job. lets tack on a run or two, eh?

done!

eye balls click and BOOM! Torii gets his 1st HR since opening wk!! 6 add on runs

Welcome to the Bigs Mr. Brooks.

I can’t stand Ned Yost.

hopefully someone will give him torii’s HR ball

is this phil coke’s last outing?

i think so

Lets hope so for sure !!!!

Aoki was struck out Coke was screwed there

Do they need more evidence?

I just feel so bad for him….can’t make too many excuses cause he gave up some very hard hit balls but if umpire calls Aoki out on strikes as he should of been they don’t score… But he still gave up a cheap single to Aoiki (which Castellanos probably should of had) and a few hard hit balls. I don’t know? I just like his fire and root for him but unfortunately it’s hard to count on him.

No, they don’t. He can’t get lefties out so what is any possible reason to keep him?
This has been coming for a long time now.

Smyly’s outing today was a very encouraging sign. We may very well have 4 very good pitchers next year, w/o max.

Well, they have to make a move on Tuesday when Ray comes up and Coke just put more nails in his coffin.

Smyly had no-hitter going into the 4th inning.

Four in a row on the road. Starting Pitching! Solid outfield defense! Yowsa!
Six up on the royals on the lost column. Double Yowsa! Go for the sweep tomorrow.
1. Every starter had at least one hit for the second straight game.
2. Another sac fly for a run; more credit goes to Miggy than Nick. the records say sac fly, so we’ll call it that.
3. Joba settles in more and more as the Hut( 8th inning setup) as opposed to Obi Won(Nathan, the Closer).
Kudos to Mig, Vic, Nick,Tori, and especially to that grinnin’ pitcher, Smyly; you know, the one who really seemed comfortable on the mound tonight.
It’s been nice to have Coke in the past, but Pepsi (Ray) is on the way.

Sometimes, I get into one of these silly modes. Apologies to all. Go Tigers.

Greg

is that reference to the Ray Charles Pepsi promotion thing: you got the right one bay-baayyy!

For awhile there I wondered if there was some strange noxious substance in the air at the ballpark, judging by actions of players on both teams and including the grammar issues on Tiger Suit Guy’s sign. Kind of a bizarre night.
Anyway, this Tigers team is doing all the things I like to see a team do. Really fun to watch.

All is well now Tigers just have to keep their guard up . JV pitches tomorrow and they have to get some runs for him .

We were noticing the grammar error as well on the sign…

What did it say? Didn’t see him with a sign.

While Coke pitched, he had a sign that said “Your my Tiger.” Common grammatical error but this one was on national TV. This is TMZ stuff. :)

Thanks.

My favorite sign from last year was in Cleveland; that two night interplay between Mario/Rod and the girl with the sign saying she was Cabrera’s #1 fan.

Davis LF
Kinsler 2B
Cabrera 1B
V. Martinez DH
Hunter RF
Jackson CF
Castellanos 3B
Avila C
Romine SS
Verlander P

Part of the reason:
Errors—Romine-1; Kinsler-1; Casty-1;Miggy-1

Does DD go for Stephen Drew?. My guess a lot depends on Romine (if he can hit .220) and maybe indirectly by how Alex does at the plate. The addition of a dependable LHB would be very helpful but maybe, just maybe, that is supplied by Alex.
Romine is one of the best shortstops (with the ball in his hand) that I have ever seen. His arm is as strong and accurate as anyone in the game.

I can’t guess how many runs Romine has saved because he makes it look so effortless. By the time the camera shows him fielding the ball, it looks like he was already positioned there. I think you definitely keep him as a backup even after Iggy returns.

I would like to know the names of the scouts beside Vizquel that recommended Romine. Because, he is as good as advertised with the glove
