Tuesday’s lineups: Tigers vs. White Sox

Detroit 001

Last night, the Tigers and White Sox played with a first-pitch temperature of 77 degrees, but the ball didn’t carry anywhere. It’s much cooler today, but as you might be able to see from the picture, the wind is going strong out to left, and it’s pretty consistent. That should play into the favor of a heavily right-handed hitting Tigers lineup to face White Sox lefty (and Xavier University product) Charlie Leesman, who gets the start in place of injured Chris Sale. The one left-handed hitter in the lineup is Alex Avila, who gets the start with Justin Verlander on the mound.

J.D. Martinez gets his first start in left field in place of Austin Jackson, who gets his first day off of the season after playing every inning of every game to date. Ausmus said it’s simply a day to rest.

“He’s played every game every day,” Ausmus said. “He’ll be back in there tomorrow.”

Rajai Davis shifts over to center.

Another day, another excuse to get Alex Avila in the lineup it seems – sigh. Can’t Justin call his own pitches, and a more capable batter (against RHP) be behind the plate?

I agree , Alex needs to go

just play alex against LHP and when young (DET) pitchers are on the mound! Brad not impressing the majority of tiger fans with moves like this.

not LHP—> RHP! my bad.

The majority of Tigers fans are mouth-breathing morons, and I doubt Brad Ausmus cares one iota about what the ‘fans’ think of him. It should tell you something that these baseball people with a wealth of knowledge that you couldn’t hope to accumulate in a dozen lifetimes sitting on your couch keep putting Avila in the lineup. I think it’s more likely you’re missing something than Ausmus and Dombrowski are wrong.

do you have a method to determine which it is? Or should everyone just take DD and BA moves always right?

Apparently Durant is the only one with an opinion. I believe in DD but with great decisions he’s also made some clunkers. (WASBURN HUFF) I don’t know how I feel about Ausmus yet. And just because a decision doesn’t work out doesn’t make it wrong but it also doesnt mean all his decision correct either.

OF defense look’n pretty rough tonight!

We can only hope that JV has his slider, curve and change-up working to complement his 4-seam fastball and keep the ball on the ground and pitch count low. Asking a lot I know. Let’s see Miggy find his swing tonight, too!

Jackson hit 50 points less against LHP

Do the Tigers have a plan at the catcher position this year?? Sure they do . They want Alex to play enough to get over 500 plate appearances as he did in 2011. Another part of their plan was to give two of these early season games in the NL parks to V Mart. How did he do?? I just arrived back in Michigan and saw my first game last night, Alex finally recorded an rbi and his double was a monster shot. You better believe he will start tonight and most of the nights over the next 140 days provided he does not get a concussion or injured badly enough to go on the 15 day DL. Will giving him all those ABs return him to a .290 hitter with 18 bombs and 80 rbis?? No, it won’t. The league adjusted to him. Alex needs to do some adjusting right now. What can he be?? Oh, he has the potential to hit at best .260 with 15 dingers and 60 rbis. His offense is key for us as we traded away our main lefty power bat and our second best LHB is on the 60 day DL.

Pitch to Abreau was right down the middle…..

The traditional 1st inning homer to give the opponent the lead! Back to back doubles to answer w/Miggy going to RF for his 2-bagger/RBI.

Who called a fastball against Abreu? He kills it, he is unable to handle breaking balls

ElTigre, JV most likely shook off Avila????

When right Avila, when wrong the pitcher?

Hopefully this means Miggy might be returning to us

Romine is starting to hit since Gonzo was let go and he became the main option @ SS (.500). Wow 1st pitch homer to RF for Miggy for 2 RBI’s!!

Martinez 3 walks in 71 AB with Toledo
2 in 3 since called

Finally some clutch hitting.

JV averaging 15 pitches/inning, we could see him maybe go 8 IP?

well alex is now stinging the ball. i give up.

Aw man, Avila tearing it up? But I was told Ausmus and Dombrowski don’t know what they’re doing and Avila is only on the team ’cause of his dad.

tis an ironic series of events

Boy Coke looked so good those first two batters…..then well he can’t complete a clean task.

definition LOOGY. this is what happens when he’s used to pitch entire innings.

Dunn put the last nail in the coffin

I don’t know if he’s done yet. he hasn’t given up a ER or a BB in his past few innings. righties are hitting him like .500 this year tho.

Enough is enough. What a waste of a roster spot

.Merciful heaven.

Hope everyone is still alive

As with several wins this year…..yes you won but it leave a bad taste in your mouth.

Phil Coke is trending on Twitter. What a spotlight stealer.

Did you see the tweet with the map and directions to Toledo? I had a good laugh at that one.
.
On another note, we seem to have a good 3rd base coach in Dave Clark.

on a more serious note, can Phil be sent to AAA to work things out? Willing?

miggy coming around is a bigger story than the win. interesting game tho.

Well, We win, but how many heart attacks happened along the way? One the night the bats come alive, the pitching goes South. Coke is the new Valverde; totally undependable. I would cut him now, and bring up another arm. The magic in that left arm is gone. Chamberlain did the job, with the walk thrown in between. I do believe he is the best option now for setup. Reed is in the wings, absent any longterm legal problems. With all of the offense, I want to share three things I liked about tonight’s win:
1. Everybody participates; 1-9 all get at least one hit.
2. JV gets burned by Abreu in the first, then makes the proper adjustment for the next time. He’s becoming a smarter pitcher, and he can still dial high 90’s if needed.
3. We added runs twice beyond the five run third. Those add on runs proved to be the difference tonight.

Kudos to Alex, Miggy, Ian, et al. I liked Miggy’s approach; hopefully he’s ready to go on a tear. Rajai continues to make nightly contributions as does Nick. Romine continues to be sound at short; don’t forget Ian’s D at the 4. Until later.

Greg

They really have to think long and hard about Coke. It is a win that could have went the other way in the 9 th inning . It at any rate it is a much needed win that we are happy to take !!!

oh shit…please PC get out of this team…..plz
