Friday’s lineups: Tigers vs. Angels

(Can’t have a Jered Weaver start at Comerica Park without the above highlight.)

The Tigers have a six-game stretch coming up where they’re going to face five left-handed starters, so they’re getting their left-handed hitters some work now. Don Kelly gets the start at third base, and Andrew Romine (he’s a switch-hitter, but he’s essentially considered a left-handed hitter) starts for the first time in a week.

The bullpen now has an extra arm with Justin Miller called up, but manager Brad Ausmus says there aren’t any relievers who are completely ruled out.

“There’s nobody who’s not available,” Ausmus said. “There are guys I’d rather not pitch.”

The Angels originally had David Freese in their lineup, then scratched him. Ian Stewart now is starting at third base and hitting at the bottom of an injury-riddled batting order.

Remember, with the Red Wings opening up their Stanley Cup playoff series tonight, the Tigers broadcast is moved to FSD Plus, with the radio call on AM 1270.

I hope Boesch gets to play.

Castellanos sits because he cooled off. But he cooled off after sitting during the West coast trip

Yeah he needs to play. But I’m not so sure he has “cooled off” per se. He is getting pretty good wood on the ball.
Kelly has to play some though. Can’t expect him to come in cold (in the cold) and get hot!
Glad to see Romine in there, or more accurately, Gonzo out of there.

Miguel ,17 for 40 on his birthday

It never gets old. Thanks, Jason!

I’ll say one little thing in Weaver’s favor here. He did buzz Avila correctly, far above his head. What a memory.

Ausmus on bullpen: “There’s nobody who’s not available. There are guys that I would prefer to not pitch.”
Like that, Dan?

4 innings?

Just awful, He’s been out of the loop too long, imo.

At the game…..1st inning Kelly ran for that foul popup…alex coulda got to that and caught it but he did move.
.
Once again other team working our pitchers and we go down quickly and quietly. Smyly can’t get anyone out. He may only he through 3
.

Maybe Smyly needs a different catcher.

Just pathetic. ….another Tiger’s starter throwing way too many pitches and the tigers going down quickly and quietly.
.
Smyly has nothing.

Take him out. Why hasn’t someone gone out there?

No way should Smyly have been allowed to throw 45 pitches in one inning. I don’t care if its only the second inning, thats an injury waiting to happen.

That many pitches has to be a record. Hard to beleive…..

smyly rusty – can you blame him? can we still win this – absolutely! Go Tigers, Go Wings!

Putkonen has the same rusty effects! Why do the Tigers always have to play from behind every single game?

who let Putkonen and Smyly get all rusty? cuz that’s the guy I am blaming for this loss!

We left. …not worth freezing our butts off for that disaster.

Ausmus hasn’t done these pitchers any favors.. frankly I think Smyly should of pitched yesterday against all the lefties but Justin cant cope with that extra day of rest.

I thought the same. But The Tigers were playing the Indians( Beck mentioned that as the main factor)that games is worth twice.

I thought about that too

Shoot, Weaver has this 65mph curveball going with this 82mph fastball that the Tigs are whiffing on. Batting practice type stuff that we can’t make contact on! Sheesh.
this team needs to step up soon or it will be a loooooong season!

I’m thinking they really wanted to get the 7th,8th and 9th inning guys locked down and see how that works out. Smyly gets a mulligan because he just hasn’t pitched. I hope Brad isn’t listening to Gene. As a long time catcher he ought to know about handling a pitching staff.

They might as well put Justin Miller out there tonight and see what he’s got. Don’t waste any more time just having him sit there and doing nothing.

Guess they are just leaving Luke out there to take it on the chin….Ausmus hasn’t impressed me at all so far, early but he obviously doesn’t really know how to handle a pitching staff…rain out or not he’s overworked some and not allowed others to pitch. That being said other teams including the Astros have kicked the snot out of Weaver…this team ????

I’m digging Miller! Good for him! Our lineup today has 2 ppl hitting .300 or better: the leadoff and the no.9 hitter

Game on again

Wings win 1-0!!!

Well this turned out to be a total disater . Halos are dialed in on the Tigers pitching .Maybe Tigers pitching is better tomorrow.

New coaches, new BP, new players……will take time to gel, Hope they win tomorrow.

5-1 in day games, 2-5 in night games.

Weaver had given up no less than 4 runs in any of his previous outings that includes the Mets and Houston. These guys just don’t hit him ever. Tomorrow Wilson whom we don’t hit either. Hopefully we can get a starter to step up and throw a gem.

Titanic sinks in Michigan. It couldn’t have been much worse. As mentioned earlier, our starter has 80 pitches after three, and Weaver has around 30 for his first three.
It has happened almost every start. The bad guys go up and hack and foul, and get walks, and we swing at the first pitch in an inning where five in a row have gotten on. Miggy, when are you going to wake up? Yes, you could buy half of Detroit now, but forget that and do what you’re supposed to do- HIT! For goodness sake, we are 12 games in, and the best hitter in baseball looks like he’s in a fog. Putkonen was dead, before the Pujols bomb; I put that one on Brad. Also, Drew was way too rusty with no work in 18 days. Each game becomes more depressing, with no crisp team play. How did we start 4-0. Luckily, all division foes lost too. How sad this team is playing.
I racked my brain, and found three things to like about the game. These are all obvious, since nothing much happened for our guys.

1. The debut of Miller. Nice start for the California Kid. Seeing his Dad grin like a possum made it extra special.
2. Kinsler’s continued stellar play. We got a good one there. Good luck Prince, but I’ll take the speed, defense, and consistency.
3. Coke and Reed. Hey, maybe Coke still has some fizz; I hope so;Reed has a big arm.

I don’t count Putkonen, because his arm was totally rusty. Bad use of personnel
Disappointed in Rajai in Left field; played with no passion in the field. Speed helps to offset those negatives. Tigers need to bury the memory of this game, and Scherzer must be an Ace tomorrow. The Halo’s have a dangerous lineup, if he’s not on his A-Game. Until tomorrow.

Greg

If we beat the Angels one of the next two, it will be better than last year!!! Lousy setup for Smyly with almost all RHBs. Good to see that eighth man in the bullpen. Now let’s see how many of the four who did not pitch today pitch tomorrow. Is it Scherzer tomorrow??

Left in the 2nd .Writing firmly on the wall. Flawed team/ Not enough supporting cast for the rotation. No margin of error for the rotation. Everyone waiting for Miggy. Bad idea.

Tigers need to regroup after this loss . Halos are not going to show them any mercy . Albert , Trout, and Stewart will be swinging for fences the rest of the weekend . Brad pay attention Kanssass City is knocking on the door !!!!!

“I don’t want to be shorthanded on the bench,” Ausmus said. “But for the time being, we felt like we needed the extra arm. And there’s no set time when that will change.”
Hopefully, they need only Joba and Nathan today . The extra arms tomorrow .
If Sanchez delivers next Monday,no need to go longer with that many pitchers.
They would be better off sending Luke to the Minors to recover his rhythm, since he wont be available at least this two days, and calling another arm beside the OF
