Thursday’s lineups: Tigers vs. Indians

CoPA 007

Tigers stick with the same lineup today against Danny Salazar, including Alex Avila catching the day game after a night game. For that matter, the Indians have the same starting nine, with only one change: Carlos Santana and Lonnie Chisenhall swap positions, getting Santana on the hot corner and Chisenhall a day at designated hitter.

Since last night’s 8th inning is still in the news, I’ll reiterate once and let it go.
I thought the bunt was in order IF you had an experienced bunter at the plate, which we didn’t. Torii was more likely to advance the runners with a grounder. He’s good at that. Regarding hindsight, it’s true that if it had worked we wouldn’t be talking about it today, but the fact is that I said “What?!?” as soon as he squared around the first time. I always say own it if you’re wrong and own it if you’re right. Actually I don’t always say that, but I just did, so I do now.
Enjoy the game, everyone.

Castellanos is right there. He is still a bit over aggressive in clutch situations but he is so close to squaring up everything he hits. In my mind-he has been more than adequate at 3rd base.
Can’t see Collins here much longer. It is doing him no good. My guess is Zeke will be here shortly. The speed, the defense, the bat on the ball and the ability to bunt can be used off our bench. Collins has power but what good is it if it doesn’t come to the plate?

13 of 50 top prospect injured
22 TJ surgeries so far
Last 2 AL MVP coming from surgery. Last NL Cy Young on DL
Something must be wrong with physical training.
And they ask players not to play Winter baseball to protect them ( Sano got injured in DR but he was the exception not the rule)

I can’t concentrate on this season because I’m still trying to figure out why DD went and traded for Gonzales. Old guy who can’t hit or field….. I’ll take Danny Worth and Lombardozzi, thanks. If not Drew.

Does the rain clear the air for HR? The HR festival at Nat- Cinci. And the Tigers vs Gonzalez
Review in a 9-0 games but not in the Davis play to end the game?

Good D for AlGo

Nice play by Gonzales in 1st Inning….

Wow those Tigers hitters. Saw 9 whole pitches in first inning! Same old thing different day!

Man that was a solid second inning for JV, now if we could just put up some runs!!

Back moment for inefficiency. They will need the bullpen a lot

Bad

That ump sure calling consistent balls and strikes. It’s a crap shoot up there. Thankfully been in our favor most of the time.

Meant to write “inconsistent” balls and strikes

Well, you can’t win if you don’t get on base.

Verlander through 3 innings 66 pitches Salazar 35. That’s a big problem

More errors…more runs….more losing.

Terrible play by JV on that bunt. If you’re going to try to make that throw you HAVE TO stop and plant your feet first. No excuse for trying to make a throw like that.

Izzy makes that play at short in the 5th that Gonzo just looked at.

go for the most advanced runner

LHB , harly

hardly

Time to call the bullpen

nice swipe tag by avila. oh wait, the ball was mishandled – nevermind.

3 unearned runs. Ugh!

Another Tiger’s error and two more runs. Cleveland must be thrilled the tigers can’t even make routine plays. 113 pitches for Verlander 47 for Salazar.

Someone remind me why I committed several hours today to watch this game. What an incredible disappointment. So stinkin’ predictable after an error that they give up 2 runs. Just seems like such a lackluster effort from the Tigers. What’s it gonna take to get some fire under them?

Ugly for sure but JV was the only person in the ballpark who didn’t figure out not to throw another fastball to Brantly, who tees off on them, loves to hit agains JV and saw 8 or 9 his 1st time up. The “arrogant fastball” syndrome persists,

Ok Ian…nice.,

IAN YOU DIRTY DOG!

Kathy, don’t you just love Kinsler?

Absolutely!

Did I mention how much I absolutely love Ian Kinsler?

I said to myself, whelp at least we have Kathy’s tiger

That is the way you do it, not giving away outs

And when you are out of a slump , those begin to fall in fair territory

Kinsler has been most consistent all year.

Coke hold your breath.

Ok, glad to see Ian created a spark. After Gonzo hits here, we need to see Romine in for defensive purposes. However, very unlikely that will happen.

There are some glaring holes in some of our players’ games. AlAl, paid zero attention to Bourne stealing 2nd and putting the tying run in scoring position.
Gonzo, not hitting and can’t field anything in the hole.
Coke has two pitches, which works for some but his two pitches are always thrown with the same speeds and in the same location.
Davis, and he has been good, is actually frightening on fly balls. He will drop a routine one before too long.
I’d like to see them put Wally Joyner on Romine. If he could hit .230 or so he would help this ball team greatly.
Not sure if Avila is going to come around but he could light a fire under his mates if he could.
Best trade of the year? No question GETTING Ian Kinsler and the added bonus of getting RID OF the liability we had at 1st base. Not to mention the $$$$$.

does brad’s bullpen management, drive anyone else nuts? it isn’t better than Leyland, as was advertised!

I don’t see anything wrong with it?

pfft yea right. How’d putting Krol in just now work out?

Oh I see. I’m on a delay. The Brantley homer. Still doesn’t drive me nuts though.

my OP was before the homer btw. I’m referring to NOT playing Putkonen yet….too much Coke…..pulling people too fast…..etc

So…….we’re saying Romine can’t even hit .179? Or Worth? Perez? Suarez?

Romine doesn’t seem like he can hit .179 at this level yet.

Was just about to type pen is getting better and Krohl served up a 2 run homer and barely doesn’t allow a 2nd. Wishful thinking I guess. And yes even I think Ausmus’s bull pen handling hasn’t been great in my opinion. For starters Luke Putkonen had a nice spring and he was used once nearly 2 weeks into the season. How do expect him to be sharp now? He’s overused Coke….

Well Brad is now going to need to either: a) pitch Joba more than 1 inning (he pitched an inning yesterday), b) pitching nathan more than 1 inning (is that in nathan’s repertoire?) or c) send Reed back out there (he pitched 5 outs last night).

Phil Coken, the Token, is going to get reps. Especially if Krol is unable to lock down his job effectively.
Dare we have hope for Joba? He looked fantastic getting Gomes.
Fastball is amping up a bit and his slider is every bit as good as AlAl’s

Where is Benoit? Why did they let him go? BTW, if you didn’t already know, Mesa lost his closer job after blowing 2 saves. Avisail Garcia out for the year. Ironic, Iggy-Garcia trade. Both out.

They let him head out west to join the Padres for some strange reason……

OK—if I am a BA, I PH for Gonzo with Kelly. Romine to short and Kelly to 3rd.
Seems pretty logical.

Nathan can tie the Valverde in saves today

Rajai has been a very good acquisition for us and has surprised absolutley everybody with his hitting against RHP.
Time for the live arm of Joe Nathan!

Wasn’t pretty at all but it was a win. Some wins just don’t feel as good. Nice to see Nathan have a clean outing.

Joba threw well, as well. Good to see.
I am not wild about Romine but the only thing Gonzo has over him is the “reputation” of being able to hit. Romine solidifies the infield, he can run, he will save his pitching staff some runs, he has a better arm.
Gonzo is not hitting and he is limited in the field to being able to cover his position only to his left.
Time for a change.

I think Putkonen is the victim of the off days and rainouts that have resulted in the Tigers playing the fewest games in the AL. I’m not worried about Krol; he’s one piece I was glad to get from Washington. The bullpen, to me, has been a pleasant surprise.
Verlander put Brad behind the 8-ball with Smyly on limited innings tomorrow, and I thought he did a good job of not overusing too many relievers today. Most of those guys should be available tomorrow.
.
I have a thought of using Rajai at leadoff while he’s hot. Kinsler to #2 and Hunter in the second half of the order to beef that up a little.

I like that Davis idea and moving Torii down

Well it is a win mark that down ,But three errors ??? No more complaints from me since we get the win .

Benoit wanted closer money. Once the Tigers signed Nathan, they chose not to pay Benoit. The throw from Hunter had 2 small skips. Very difficult for Avila to handle. I sure do miss Kaline out there! Davis did not look so good on his bunt attempt and then popped it up. I have never had a win feel bad! Bring on the Angels! Go Tigers!

Miller being called up – no word yet on who is being sent down or cut. Coke? Krol? Gonzo? Putkonen?

1. Add on runs in 2 late innings.
2. The two J’s come through big.
3. 03 continues to earn his weight in gold.

Ugly win!

Greg

Joe and Jaba!

Greg

None of those guys going down makes sense. Probably Collins.
