Wednesday’s lineups: Tigers vs. Indians

With the return of the DH slot, the Tigers lineup looks a lot more normal tonight, including the return of Ian Kinsler to the leadoff spot, Miguel Cabrera to the third slot in the order, and Rajai Davis to ninth.

Nick Castellanos remains in the sixth spot, with Alex Avila moving to seventh. It’s a creep up for a player who was expected to remain in a lower-pressure spot in the lineup for at least the early part of the schedule, but it’s a sign of how well he has handled himself at the plate for the first couple weeks.

“I don’t want to throw Nick in the heart of the lineup,” Brad Ausmus said this afternoon, “but I just think Nick’s handled himself pretty well, so I don’t feel as uncomfortable putting him in the sixth spot.”

let’s get it! feels like forever since they played, two days off is too much! going to be around 40 for first pitch but they will get this cold game in, have to beat our rivals

Let’s play ball tonight!! Early in the season, it’s so difficult to get all the bench guys enough reps “to get them going.” A few teams have started the 2014 season with 12 position players and 13 pitchers with 8 men in the bullpen. What do you think, is this a new trend that may catch on?? In the past couple of years, a team or two have had six man rotations for a brief time. For me, the eight man bullpen makes much more sense. Last year we NEVER started a month with seven men and had them finish the month without getting some help from Toledo. Or maybe all teams with weak bullpens go through this issue?? Any comments??

cancelled in Minnie tonight!

I think part of the problem with the hitters inconsistency might be the lack of play…they never play too many built in days off early and now two weather postponements. I think some of them need to get into the groove of things. By the way Fridays weather not looking great right now.

You goin to the game, gk?

Not tonight I have tickets for Friday though.
Great start walk the bases loaded. Argh

Who just made the visit to the mound?? Jeff or Brad??

Jeff and it took too long in my opinion.

Throw some strikes Anibal.

Is it me or does it feel like our pitchers are having rough first innings?
Nice play by Nick there.

News flash. #42 will score the winning run tonight.

facing the righty tonight. Will Alex get a hit?

In ST, Alex hit really well against LHP (over.500). So he has not been hitting RHP this year.

Double. Got him over to third. Then Mig gets him in with a groundout. Good basic small ball. Go Tigers.

come on Sanchez, geez 24 pitches in the 1st inning! I know it’s cold but throw strikes not puffballs to these guys. At least we got even in the bottom of the frame.

Appearently Sanchez is going to suck tonight. Way to get behind the 8 ball. Glad I waited for days for this.

we’d better get a lead before our bullpen gets into the game!!

21 days of rest between his last game in ST and his first during the regular season are taking his toll

I hope alex took notes on that Gomes throw out of Jackson!

Today, SB are on Anibal. He is way too slow on the mound

Davis gets to lead-off the third.

Will Anibal go four innings??

Nice ab by Austin

Alex Avila doesn’t comes through again?? I like Alex but he’s got to provide more offensively.

Does he still pitch on this team?
Tigers hitters impressive as usual. With the way these guys dont hit they are going to have start giving up fewer runs.

Good call, El t.

Pull Reed. Is it Krol or Coke??

Can’t win if you can’t score any runs. Anibal put them behind the 8 ball but the hitters have literally contributed very little the last few games. Still not over obviously but it doesn’t look too good. Keeping my fingers crossed.

alex got a hit. gotta give him credit that was a nice swing.

Slug thru the shift

Pinch run for him

Oh well…they had their chances.

I blame this loss on # 42.

I feel like it is going to be like this all year….not enough offense. If you have a team that can hit consistently and timely then you better have pitchers that throw up 0’s and so far that’s not what’s happening.

Opportunity in the 8th squandered. I didn’t know Hunter was such a lousy bunter but Brad should have. I guess he learned something there.
Entertaining game but a disappointing finish.
With Hickok’s strike zone, it’s a wonder any runs at all were scored. He was calling strikes on unhittable pitches.

It happened last year too. He said he hates to bunt for sacrifice. He bunts to go on base only

They made it interesting.

24 had the RBIs and caused the winning run to score

well i reckon alex got the monkey off his bat tonight. Hopefully he can relax and get on a roll. Miggy still not out of the slump, but at least the bullpen held up.

“Hunter, who’s been credited with three sacrifice hits in 17 seasons and 8,039 plate appearances ” From the press coverage of a game vs .Cleveland

Sounds like a pretty bad decision by Ausmus, doesn’t it?

Sure does

Boy Rich I didn’t think that this game was entertaining at all. With the exception of about 3 games I think they’ve been incredibly boring and frustrating to watch.

A 3-2 game boring? I like the discussion over the bunt decision. Don’t get that in a 12-9 game.
Another thing I thought of was that Brad could have taken off the bunt after seeing Torii’s weak attempt on the first pitch. The strategic advantage of bunting there I agreed with, but only if the guy up there can lay one down. Torii’s not that guy. Didn’t this happen last year too?

Interesting: Indians wouldn’t have walked Cabrera intentionally if Hunter had executed sac; Miggy not himself yet, and V-Mart is dangerous.

Yep boring….. Cant hit and score runs..boring and frustrating. I don’t mean they need to put 20 hit and score 12 runs, but she your team has shown zero ability to score runs it’s boring. In my opinion especially since it seems to happening nearly every single game.
I too understand what Ausmus was thinking I just don’t think he had the right guy up at the plate.

yeah that bunt by torii – to watch it – was hard. With Rajai swinging a good bat right now, is Rajai batting 2nd the right move? In regards to miggy not being himself yet – when he is (and he won’t announce it before hand) he’ll smoke it….and probably start a rally.

Man you can read the frustration on this here blog! Our poor Tigers are simply roaring like a field mouse. So much inconsistency top to bottom. The biggest fear I have is that just about every team in the majors has a righthanded flame thrower in their pen.
If we don’t score early, we might be a lot of toast this year. Thus far, our strength(SP) is not up to snuff. Both Sanchez and Sherzer are finding the road a bit bumpy. the bottom of the batting order is so very weak. If Vizquel really pushed for AG, he must have been on a major drunken spree. There is no need to panic(YET), but Miggy and Nick, and Alex have got to stand tall. Through all of the disappointment tonight, I did like three things from this game:
1. No add on runs. As poorly as Sanchez pitched, he wasn’t a disaster. Cleveland did not score after the second inning, though they had many missed chances. Annibel
ends up with 8 K’s and only 2 surrendered hits in 5.
2. Bull Pen continues to settle in. Reed has a big time arm. That group of four gave us a chance to win.
3. Victor continues to get good AB’s. He sees enough pitches and is pretty dependable also. If 3 starts hitting, and 5 keeps the K’s down, the runs should become much more consistent.

Tori was a major disappointment tonight. The DP was the killer. Glad to see Alex do okay in his three game effort to keep his job. Miggy shows small signs. Rajai and Ian are still the most consistent. Nick needs to get the line drive swing going. Was not impressed with the Indian lineup, but that Pen will be a problem all year. Until later.

Bunting Hunter seemed inappropriate. If he does his job then they walk Miggy to set up a DP possibility.
As to bunting—why doesn’t Rajai bunt? His speed and a decent bunt could have won the game.
