Saturday: Don Kelly Opening Day — Tigers vs. O’s

Bud Norris gave up a .315 batting average and .889 OPS to left-handed hitters last season, compared with .241 and .629 from right-handers. So if you’re going to pick a spot for left-handed hitting Don Kelly to get his first start of the season, this one makes more sense than others, though it comes at the expense of sitting Nick Castellanos while he’s swinging a hot bat. Right-handed hitting Rajai Davis keeps the start in left.

Baltimore welcomes back J.J. Hardy to the lineup after he missed Friday’s opener with back spasms. Interesting decision by manager Buck Showalter to move Nelson Cruz to the second spot and shift Nick Markakis down to fifth.

You want the best d available for porcello

I’ll put my neck on the block by saying Kelly’s defense is over-rated. Somehow he has developed a reputation as an excellent fielder (because of his lack of bat?) but the truth is, IMHO, he is simply versatile and holds his own in the field. I suppose you have to play him once in a while but not at the expense of a bat like Nick’s. Nick will be getting a day or two off soon enough against NL teams. Every game Nick plays he learns. My choice would be to put Kelly in left if you want to play him.

1. kelly plays better 3B than Nick
2. I’d play kelly instead of Torii

I’ll be darn, Donnie sure has made the best of his start in the lineup today.

Ausmus is calling all the right cards. Donnie 3 for 4 and the bottom of the order is getting it done! Now they need to either get Avila going or give Holiday more starts.
Porcello was somewhat efficient today, not so much with his pitch count but the results were solid. 11 groundouts, 3K’s, 2 flyouts, 2 assists/DP and 2 line outs on 94 pitches. Couple of SB’s are becoming the norm. Go Tigers!

yep ausmus def. pushin the right buttons this year so far. lets see if coke passes the pepsi challenge

sip test says “no”

Let’s hope Coke’s days are numbered! 1/3 IP, single, triple, walk and groundout for 2 ER’s and they were hitting the 89mph 4-seamer. Krol was efficient yesterday though.

I have to assume that after yesterday Coke will have a short leash . Each time I assume you know what happens .

Brad has made some very nice moves so far. Not sure I would bring Nathan in so quickly though. Gotta show confidence in AlAl

The whole pen is going to be a problem all year. With the exception of Nathan he tried to do the pen on hopes and dreams.

Gotta freaking be kidding me?

Take that back Nathan might be a problem too!

Phil Coke: 54.00ERA

Good grief. Find us another BP piece. What is going on with Nathan?
OMG, please get us out of this..

An error and Joe might try and throw a strike.

Thank goodness Rajai was out there to catch it,

Gotta feeling be kidding me? And Nathan is supposed to be our lockdown closer?

Freaking be kidding me..I love auto correct

SOS Bullpen, Mr. D.

Wow! 4-0. Three 1-run wins. Great days for Hunter and Kelly. But did anybody else turn blue or have to change your underwear in that 9th inning? Coke gave them an opportunity and they nearly tied or won the game.

Very shaky BP and Nathan included! We had a 7-1 lead and Coke, AA & Nathan turned it into a nail-biter! Come on guys, earn your money!! This “W” almost feels like a loss.

Jhan Marinez has Danny show you how to get to CoPa

I thought he should have let AlAl throw to another hitter. The hit against Al was a blooper that actually should have been caught.

Gonzalez has 2 errors in 3 games too. It makes me sick we gave up a 5-tool OF to a division foe for an injured SS we may not see this year or in the future. Last year, someone in scouting got sold a line of BS (“snowed”) on the Iglesias physical exam as it’s noted he was injured last year with the Red Sox. We may need Drew after all.
DK had a nice game @ 3rd. Here’s a thought if Victor can catch some games this year. Play Martinez behind the plate, Nick @ DH and Donnie @ 3rd. sit Avila on the bench to learn how to stroke the ball.

I’m pretty sure Washington is saying the same things about Fister (damaged goods). I don’t believe Boston knew Iggy was damaged. He played 3rd and SS almost all season for them until he got traded to Detroit, needing a few days off. Its the inability for his bones to heal over the winter that is the concern now. Why didn’t they?

To give coke even a try was a mistake. Nathan? Too early but agd could have caught him. Valverde covld say “miss me yet”?

In fact.both teams knew about thd injury.DD was quotd by Jason .but they failed to see the true nature of the injury. A phone call and.
scherzer keeping his selfright thoughs for himself could have avoided this drama

by keeping Peralta? Not knowing what they were going to get with Nick at 3rd base they had to get a SS with better range. Just my opinion they wanted someone new.

Until the end of the season.and then find a ss whitout pressure.

Avila has 1 hit in 12 ABs and 1 CS. While he has 4 walks he also has 6 strikeouts….sheesh.

Kathy, no this is documented with John Farrell stating that the BoSox knew about the injury last year, the Tigers didn’t do their due diligence because we knew Peralta was suspended and Iggy looked very promising, going into the post season. What’s more worrisome is the bullpen is not fixed adequately again for the 2014 season! The rotation seems to be fine again to all deliver 190+ innings this season.

Sure, they knew about the shin splints, but that didn’t stop him from performing on the field. I don’t think he had 2 fractured legs at that point of the trade, just shin splints which is a common injury.

Jackson, Hunter and Davis are carrying the load along with miggy. Vmart and Alex need to improve. Cast holding his own so far.

Hey GK, you gotta be freaking kidding me!

4-0 with most facets of the game working very well so far. No complaints.
Nathan did his job today. With the game on the line, he retired one of the best hitters in the AL, Davis. That’s what he’s paid for, to close out games. No bonuses for 3 up 3 down innings.
Many people have worried about Coke and Chamberlain and many people had and still have reason to. Coke isn’t even in the league if he’s not lefthanded, sorry to say. Worst of all is he is being “Ra-burned” now.

I feel bad for Coke…it’s just not going to go well for him especially if he continues to get booed. He is going to go the way of Grilli, Inge, and Raburn. I like a Phil and wish he’d turn it around….and if it were a lack of effort it would be one thing but I am sure it’s not.

I’m afraid it is lack of something else. They cannot afford to have Coke on their roster and in their bullpen.

regardless of why it is what it is. Between Coke, Joba and Al Al…nearly NO WAY all three contribute to this great pen performance we’re gunna see this year. Sooner we start this search sooner we find someone who can contribute.

I don’t disagree with you but it doesn’t mean I don’t root for him and have empathy. Besides I’m not sure what other options there are right now since DD didn’t address the issue for the most part.

The sealer is low gloss with and oil base finish to it. But other than that, you should be happy with your renovated wall.
