Play ball: Tigers vs. Florida Southern

Spring Training 019

Good morning from Joker Marchant Stadium, where after a week and a half of workouts and 48 pitches of live batting practice with Justin Verlander, there’s some baseball to be played. For at least one at-bat, it’ll involve most of the Tigers regulars.

Most of this info trickled out over the last couple days. Brad Ausmus warned not to make too much out of Ian Kinsler batting leadoff, but considering Kinsler isn’t dealing with an injury, there isn’t an overwhelming reason to get his at-bat out of the way early, either. We’ll get a better idea of the batting order plans when Grapefruit League play starts tomorrow, though it’s not certain yet how many regulars will be making the trip to Disney World to face the Braves.

The one guy in the lineup who might get multiple at-bats is James McCann, who gets the start behind the plate in place of Alex Avila. For what it’s worth, Avila says he’s feeling good, but they’re not going to risk aggravating the back spasms that sidelined him the last couple days.

no surprise Avila says he’s feeling good, albeit.

If it was Jim Leyland, it was a fairly safe bet that this would be the opening day lineup. Don’t know Ausmus’s MO yet.
Side note: Brad Ausmus caught the last game I ever saw at Tiger Stadium, in 1999.

Side note to the side note: would Brad’s family be called Ausmi?

Rich, is that too much Latin or what? Ausmus, Ausmi.

“Latin is a deadly language, it’s plain enough to see. It killed off all the Romans, and now it’s killing me.” Written on the inside cover of my latin textbook……way back in the day.

enter the return-for-doug-fister known as Robbie Ray! mmmm let the evaluation begin!

and Lombo enters!

Thanks for the link!

yea no problem!! Also the stats page is much improved from years past (e.g. you used to have to refresh the page to update the box score)!

lord almighty Lombardozzi just hit a double with a man on 1st – DD is a genius! lol jk but good for Lombo.

2-0 tigers now in the 4th. Feels good to get runs on the board in 2014!

Daniel Fields ate his wheaties today! HR to rf …. 3-0 tigers

AAAaannd the game unravels for the Mocs like that

good ballgame today. Collins, Lombo, Moya and Fields all great days at the plate.

Ray had a good pitching performance as well. 36 pitches thrown 26 for strikes.

I’m sure it felt good for Robbie Ray to get those K’s and the pick off at 3rd after giving up that double. I hope he turns out to be a strong upside surprise this year and beyond. He carries the burden every time the Fister trade comes up. Granted this is a Div 2 college. It’s just good to get the rust off for the team. Tomorrow starts major league competition.

when does At Bat pick up audio? noticed today’s game was unavailable, I’m thinking tomorrow

tomorrow the detroit tigers radio network starts…..I think!

Kyle, is At Bat strictly a mobile App?

looks like app for phones and tablets. Still, MLB audio is $19.99 for the At Bat app or you can get it for your computer for the same price for ST games and all of the regular season.

Thanks Kathy.

“I’ve told Dave to tell Jim, and I’ve told (bench coach Gene Lamont) to tell Jim that he shouldn’t think twice about it,” Ausmus said. “As comfortable as I am with him being wherever he’d like to be, he has to be comfortable with it.” -B. Ausmus

This made me really really happy when I read it. I think it’s sad that some people think it would be for the best (for the team/org) for him to disappear or something.

No-Jim is a valuable asset. More now that he is “liberated” from some of the scrutiny that his former job required.
BTW–who the H-E double hockey sticks, is Nelson Cruz’s agent. Yikes. Talk about bad advice.

agreed. albeit at least he is playing for a contending team – unlike Cano’s agent (who is actually a “rapper”).

The rapper says he’s “not a businessman, but a Business. Man.”

If you think that is bad, Kendrys Morales still doesn’t have a contract after turning down $14 QO

What about Stephen Drew? Does he have a job yet?

no he does not
