ALCS Game 5 lineups: Tigers vs. Red Sox

Just as Jim Leyland forecast, he went with the same lineup in Game 5 that he used in Game 4. The one change he made was in flip-flopping Omar Infante and Alex Avila in the batting order, getting  back-to-back right-handed hitters against left-handed Jon Lester.

With Boston manager John Farrell looking for a way to spark his own offense, the Red Sox are going to roll with rookie Xander Bogaerts at third base over Will Middlebrooks.

TIGERS (career/series numbers against Jon Lester)

  7. Alex Avila, C (4-for-9, 3 K’s / 1-for-3, K)

  2. Shane Victorino, RF (10-for-46, HR, 4 walks, 9 K’s)

Last three game series in Comerica Park this season. We need to win it!!!!!! Go Tigers.

This one today is most important.
A loss today would make probability in Boston very low.

I think your exactly right…that’s why Sunday still stings.

Come on boys – let’s get to Lester early and often!

Anibal looked good. Especially getting Ellsbury after falling behind.
It’s hard not to think about the two we lost. But we have to. They were debilitating losses to be sure but it does appear that the guys have gotten beyond that and are able to focus on the task at hand.

I guess this lead off hitter of ours can’t work counts any better than the original.

What the heck is going on in the 3rd base coaching box? What was that?
.
— Bob

You gotta freaking be kidding……another one thrown out at home. I wish there was a stat out there that told how many we got thrown out at home this year versus other teams.

OUCH!
I like Brookens but I think he was out of position and Miggy didn’t get the stop in time.

Brookens repented after sending him

I think your right Dan it was too late. And what always seems to happen when you screw up the other team comes back with a run….and no cheapie either that was smoked.

What the hell was that? I thought it was blatantly obvious that cabrera stays at 3rd on that hit. How did that happen. I feel stupid just watching that.

Did all well , bad bounce there

And he not only screws up by going through a stop sign now he can’t field a ground ball. Way to step up.

Looking sloppy already.

That replay showed it. That was all on Miggy. Tommy put the stop sign up in plenty of time.
.
— Bob

It is “Hanging Sanchez” right now. Nothing special with his offspeed tonight. Getting ugly fast.
.
— Bob

Appearently Sanchez is hitting his spots…..and heaven forbid Jeff Jones walks his but out there or the catcher. Just continue to throw cookies right down the middle that will work.

That’s not hitting his spots.

Don’t know if I want to watch this mess for the whole game.

Congrats Jones, now you go out after 3 runs are in.

Do you think Jones decides when to go out? It is your buddy JL who makes that call.
.
— Bob

I think it’s both……and depends.

Great block by Avila and fast thinking by Infante.
Bad running by them

Bad running by Boston

With Lester on the mound, this may be over.

2nd & 3rd, 2nd & 3rd,2nd & 3rd. Yikes.
Miggy hurt his time really badly on O and on D.
that’s too bad.
Sometimes he gets in superstar mode and forgets.
On second look Brookens did what he needed to do.
Anibal lost his composure.
My fears have been realized. i was worried about Sanchez.
I was worried about seeing Porcello.
Well, let’s see what we are made of.

Bad running and an error. Not a good inning for the Tigers.

I’d put his butt on the bench and let Peralta play 3rd, but Jim won’t do that.

This already feels bad doesn’t it

Well, when you see blatant mistakes like that, it’s not a good way to start. Still, they have to put it behind them and move on. You can’t make careless mistakes like that in games like this. Go Tigers!!!!!!!!

That out by cabrera killed a potential big inning. They had lester on the ropes and they just let him walk away. Now they score some runs and he has a lead and that can totally change the mindset of the pitcher from being flustered and making mistakes to getting his confidence back and pitching a good game. That could have a huge impact on this game.

Unearned run on that error.

After 2 innings:
Boston Good Team
Detroit: Bad Team
Lester can stifle us but we have a team that is quite capable of what Napoli has done to us.
The challenge will be actually doing it.
Anibal has to become Justin Verlander and shut them down.
JV has won many a game after falling behind but hanging in there.

if you cant hit, use your glove

Holy cow what a play by Jose….that was impressive

Your not kidding that was quit a play

Sanchez isn’t fooling anybody especially Napoli.

A little help form the defense( beside Iglesias) wont hurt

Avila had to run after the ball

And a wild pitch…..just keeps getting better. Pretty disappointed in Anibal. He is actually the pitcher I usually feel most comfortable with. Second bad outing of the post season now though.
.
Hitters need to do something and soon

Just finished saying to my better half (GBHer) that if Anibal gets out of this we have a chance. And then it didn’t happen. That WP was spiked. he’s done.
Anibal is not going to get it together. better get alvarez and porcello ready.
Incredible play by Iggy.
next year (if DD does his job) might be a lot of fun.

Way to go get em 9 pitch inning for Lester…..that’s how you get back in a game!
.
So I guess I was right that offense last night was less about a lineup change and more about Peavy stinking it up!

I sure hope DD does not think about converting Jhonny into an outfielder next year. It ain’t gonna happen.
Gomes robs Aviala and JP lets a pretty catchable ball with now slice on it over his head. Not faulting him, just saying.
We need a miracle today.

i’m feelin for alex today

bring porcello in

They could find a place for Peralta. I wont be surprised if they keep him. to play season long like this postseason

Nightingale:Brayan Pena is 7-for-17 (.412) with a double and four RBIs against Lester in his career.

Anyone know how long it’s been since Pena has even had an at-bat before tonight? Can’t remember if he’s pinch hit for anyone in recent times. I guess the only way he gets to play is if Avila goes down.

september 29th

Thanks!

had to wait to pitches

Kathy it’s been since the last series in Miami he has not gotten into a game in the post season till tonight

It showed in that ab too…ground out on ball 4

Avila:left knee patellar tendon strain.Day-to-day.

aj leads off with a single. i think next game you put back the old lineup. today miggy’s injury is why this lineup doesn’t work. maybe with a healthy miggy it would.

Jackson is hitting due t the lack of pressure. As leadoff, the chances are he is back to normal

He was out…..sorry Iglesias. Now can 1-2 or 3 do anything?

Another excellent Torii Hunter AB…… Pop out.

Just say no

He is the the full offense of the team

Prince is absolutely killing us!!!!

Dan & Jim mentioned that was the first time boos were heard.

The answer crappie ab by Torii…..even worse by Fielder

Somebody said it earlier the offense had more to do with Peavy and less to do with AJ in the bottom of the lineup. Pretty disappointed.

Peña, after 18 days

Wild pitch and an error looming large.

PH for Iglesias

Or not

Fielder is due , no RBI since last ALCS

Torii…… Another bad ab or can he come through

another double play! I could cry!

Miggy over anxious again against this guy. He helped him out. That is so unlike him. He is taking the weight on his shoulders because of the dead hole hitting behind him.
.
— Bob

Still 1 run closer

That’s was 23 million will get you …23 million groundouts to first!

Wild pitch and error….looming large!

I was gonna say the exact same thing. That and that 1st inning when cabby ran into the final out which would have been bases loaded with lester not pitching very good at that moment.

I thought after Mig laid off the first pitch to him it was a good sign, but then . . .

Next season, sit him once in a while to keep rested him for postseason

iggy playn short LF has saved us i think tonight

Middle of the 8th and one thing is clear: the best team will win this series.

Peralta (who’s been great) swung at ball 3 and 4.

We wont hit this guy because we have no plate discipline.
.
— Bob

Ump interference

Can you believe it……unfortunately yes I can. Pena did break late but what was that ump trying trying to do being that close and in that position. I love umpires….especially since it appeared bogarts swung and the stupid ump missed it.

Pena was dogging it down the line. It is on him. He put himself out of position because he did not hustle.
.
— Bob

Tigers just don’t have it. That extra thing. It’s not even that we’ve gotten greatly outplayed. Just think how different this series might of been. Sunday night .. (No need to rehash that) Tuesday the many many missed opportunities….today the error the wild pitch and the three rally killing double plays we grounded into. It’s just doesn’t appear to be in the cards.

Move up VMart and Peralta

Well guys im gonna try and stay positive. We have sherzer and verlander lined up. It is still possible. I dont wanna wait 2 days. Its gonna be a long couple of days waiting. GO TIGERS!

1.cabby and alex can heal up
2.pen isn’t rusty
3.aj is hitting
4.max and jv

If we make it through I’ll be shocked. I will also be be feeling that no matter what happens next, this team is missing a few things.
. Not sure how we made it this far. perhaps leyland is a better manager than I thought.
I actually missed most of this game. Couldn’t watch anymore after the Pena DP. Came back and it was 4-3 in the 8th. Looked here then at Gameday and knew right away that would be the end of it.
It is what it is.

Yes move up VMart and Peralta. That was the one part of the lineup change JL neglected to make. Prince 5th at the very highest. He needs to be moved down right now. He is killing the offense. Infante 6th. Alex 7th if he is all right. Austin and then Iglasias. He needs to stay in. Unfortunately, the down side of getting Peralta’s bat in the lineup is that he’s too slow to play LF. I don’t know, if they insist on playing him then it must be SS. Iglasias brings so much energy and the team needs all they can get. I have a feeling JL will want to get all his big bats in.

Looks like Miggy, and the rest of Detroit, has to realize he does not have the physical ability to carry this team. He had a bad game from what I gather. And we lost.
Prince Fielder is neither a prince or a fielder.
Utter disappointment.
If I ever see him chatting and smiling with the opposition at 1st base again it will be too soon.
Tigers will win nothing with him.
Illitch made a mistake with insisting on getting him.
He is an impediment in the middle of the lineup, an aberration at 1st base, a blockade in terms of player development and a huge buzz kill.
He is not the goat in this post-season.
The team is just too old, too slow, too one dimensional.
A shame when you consider how darn good this pitching staff can be.

N.B. Max, it might be a prudent strategy to NOT throw Napoli down the middle fastballs.

Miguel cannot keep making poor judgement mistakes. Trying to do way too much. He hurt the team tonight. If he thinks he NEEDS to do it all, that is no excuse. He needs to take what they give him even if it’s just a walk. Trust your teammates. Get focused. They could have come back tonight.

Agree Dan. Maybe they can still pull this out with some perfect pitching. That’s what it’s gonna take.

Leyland: ,“(Brookens) was waving and probably stopped him a little late,” Jim Leyland said. “With Miggy right now, you’ve got to stop him. There was nothing Miggy could do. It’s pretty rough for him right now, and it was just one of those unfortunate things.”

From The Detroit News: http://www.detroitnews.com/article/20131018/SPORTS0104/310180049#ixzz2i2zdHTMv

Brookens may have lost his job next season. It should have been obvious that there is no way Miggy can score with a left-fielder charging a ground ball hit right at him.
Not sure if Tom knows how to separate his logic from his expectations.

I guess that with Scherzer and Verlander(3 or 4 grounders to SS in his last game and 1 in the previous 3), Jhonny goes back to SS and Dirks/Kelly will be in LF

@tom_gage:
“Will Fielder be moved to another slot? “I don’t think so,” – #TIgers Leyland. “I still feel good something good might happen at any time.”
Hope and dream? Or delusion and denial?

Avila ,left knee patellar tendon strain
2012, sore patella tendon in left knee

http://beck.mlblogs.com/2012/05/08/avila-out-with-sore-patella-in-left-knee/

2011, playoff, stepped on Robinson Cano and got injured

Here is the thing while Fielder had over 100 rbi’s in the regular season to act like he is completely useless is well not completely accurate. Even though I hate to admit that I did dub him pylon and everything. But man has he been disappointing this post season. Last year during the World Series he hit into a whole lot of bad luck but this year he hasn’t. What’s amazing is that he was hitting rather well in September and it just stopped, the pressure must be way to much for him, that is the only thing can think of.
.
Anibal disappointed me last night ….wild pitches, error and lack of clutch hitting. Same old story different day
.
It will be a small miracle if they can win two in Fenway.

The series was lost by the overmanaging and mismanaging of Leyland on Sunday.

Miggy out at home was a huge impact on this game. I can’t tell if he was stopped early enough, but do know that waving him for even an instant was stupid – that ball needed to get by the fielder before considering sending him, he can’t run. Not sure if the call was too late or if Miggy just ignored it but that was just a bad, bad play. Disappointing loss – just a few things made the difference – play at the plate, wild pitch – Sanchez did a good job of settling down but with our offense right now we can’t afford any bad innings like that. We made it interesting scoring 3 straight innings, just couldn’t keep it going. Uphill battle but not over yet. I think a big issue is not having a great pinch hitter to throw in for Iggy at the end – he, in my mind, was not the answer for last at bat with a one run deficit – I’d take Andy over him even though Andy is not doing diddly right now. 2E would have been perfect for that spot, and maybe he would have gotten out, but we need some bench power.

So far we’ve got…………
Overanxious hitters chasing pitches out of the zone in big situations.
A 3rdbase coach who doesn’t seem to be familiar with the personnel he’s coaching.
Detroit players booed in their own ballpark.
A manager who misused the bullpen.
Tim McCarver going on and on about games and players from the 1960s.
Four hour games.
One cute little girl in a commercial.
No Bernsteins.
A catcher with a tendon injury on his back hitting leg that plans to play on.
What have I missed?

I really dont like it when people say a game or a series is lost when its not even over yet. No offense to anyone but i just always like to hold out hope. Even if there right 90 percent of the time. You have to believe. And thats whats wrong with most of the players. They give up thinking its over. With that mindset they will never win. So come on tigers. Dont lose faith. Dont give in. We got our 2 aces on the mound whether its in boston or not. Just give it all you got and battle every single at bat and they will come out on top. Remember they were down 2 to 1 against oakland too and that game winner was in loud oakland. GO TIGERS!

9 seasons and over 5500 plate appearances. 1 Grand Slam. That actually tells me a lot about PF.

SS) Iglesias (R) – The “Rookie-of-th-Year” is solid in the field, at the plate, and on the basepath.

RF) Hunter (R) – Hits to right advancing “Iggy” to third (big inning potential if these two get on base)

3B) Cabrera (R) – “MVP” is a threat to clear the bases every at bat

C) Martinez (S) – Keeps the inning alive with timely hits ( He will catch our World Series road games )

DH) Peralta (R) – Great spot for a clutch hitter

1B) Fielder (L) – Possible for “Prince & Cabby” to both hit 3-run homers in the same inning!!! WOW

2B) Infante (R) – Would like to see him punch a few of those outside pitches into RF

LF) Dirks (L) – Good spot for a lefthanded hitter with decent power

CF) Jackson (R) – Makes things happen ( AJ can do it all )

I gotta say. Im really diggjng that lineup you came up with. Nice job. Too bad leyland is to stubborn to do something like that.

Love the lineup for its hitting potential, but wonder about Martinez behind the plate.

Maybe you already know but Rondon saw Dr Andrew. He will need rest and rehabilitation, not a single pitch until December the 1rst
ESPN

fuuuuuuuuuuuudgge

Ortiz hurts us again!

Hate to say this, but Rondon might be a no go with the way he throws. Granted, he’s young, very young.

Let’s put it this way. Don’t pin next year’s bullpen hopes on this arm. Made that mistake once already.

DD—the master of “Appointment”‘ or is that “Annoinment?”
Knebel will be talked about in the spring.

Of course we have a chance with Max and Justin! I have seen some great games because my Tigers are playing in October. Someone said it earlier, it is about the big hit. Ortiz hit the grand slam = game changer. Miggy was up to bat with runners on 1st and 3rd with no outs and hit into a double play. Also I give credit to Leyland for changing the line up which I think helped win the game. He could change the line up one more time. Bat Victor behind Miguel because everyone can see the Prince is in a slump. Put him in the 7th hole if you are any kind of game changer. Go Tigers!

Avila:
“Obviously, (Friday) will tell me a lot but I’ve had this injury before in 2011 and I’ve dealt with it on and off over the last three years, so I’m familiar with it,”
