ALCS Game 1 lineups: Tigers at Red Sox

Pretty standard lineup for the Tigers these days. The one difference is that Omar Infante moved up to seventh, with Alex Avila bumped down to eighth.

As expected, Jhonny Peralta is in left field, especially against the left-hander Jon Lester. Also as expected, Leyland is getting tired of the questions about Peralta and the Green Monster.

“You know what the key is to this wall? I’ll tell you what the key. If you read off the bat right away that it’s going to be high off the wall, which you should be able to read, then you get back [from the wall],” Leyland said. “And if it’s one in between that you might be able to catch or it hit might hit the wall, then you can’t do a damn thing about it. That’s as simple as it is.”

TIGERS (career numbers off Lester)

  1. Austin Jackson, CF (4-for-14, walk, 2 K’s)
  2. Torii Hunter, RF (13-for-30, HR, 2 walks, 4 K’s)
  3. Miguel Cabrera, 3B (10-for-19, HR, 5 walks, K)
  4. Prince Fielder, 1B (4-for-15, walk, 3 K’s)
  5. Victor Martinez, DH (6-for-14, HR, 2 walks)
  6. Jhonny Peralta, LF (8-for-27, 2 HR, 5 walks, 7 K’s)
  7. Omar Infante, 2B (2-for-6)
  8. Alex Avila, C (3-for-6, 2 K’s)
  9. Jose Iglesias, SS (1-for-3, 2 K’s)

P: Anibal Sanchez

RED SOX (career numbers off Sanchez)

  1. Jacoby Ellsbury, CF
  2. Shane Victorino, RF (10-for-43, HR, 4 walks, 7 K’s)
  3. Dustin Pedroia, 2B
  4. David Ortiz, DH (3-for-3, 2 HR)
  5. Mike Napoli, 1B
  6. Daniel Nava, LF
  7. Stephen Drew, SS (5-for-20, walk, 4 K’s)
  8. Will Middlebrooks, 3B
  9. David Ross, C (2-for-11, HR, walk, 3 K’s)

P: Jon Lester

The key to the wall is, your pitcher to not let them hit the ball off it!

Mayo Smith for Fox analyst!!!!!!!!!!!

Jim is either the biggest buzzkill in the world or we’re all stupid. Take your pick, I guess.

Yes small sample size, but appearently David Ortiz like hitting Sanchez…yikes 3 for 3 with 2 homeruns?

That was 7 years ago.

“Jim, can you talk about your decision to bring in Coke there for Ortiz?”
“It was a no-brainer. Sanchez has never gotten Ortiz out.”
“But Jim……it was the first inning.”

Elias:Miguel Cabrera is 10-for-19 (1 HR) vs Jon Lester, David Ortiz is 3-for-3 (2 HR) vs Aníbal Sánchez.
2006, 2 HR and a 2b. Sanchez was a rookie , second career game. Just after being traded to the Marlins from BoSox

Fielder? I rather see him batting 180 with 10 HR than 400 with 0 HR. Going the opposite way for average is not right for a slugger. Fenway Park is hard on LH but he can pull the ball out of the park

He is totally lost there

Boy…..might have something if AJ and Torii can manage to get on base every once in a while.

I said this earlier on another thread. JL has already made 2 mistakes. AJ leading off and Avila catching.
Both are actually stupid on top of being stubborn.
JL feels that if he removes AJ he will destroy his confidence. DUH what confidence. He is putting MORE pressure on him by leading him off after his run with the strikeout boogey man.
Hunter is not extendible IMO. he had a good year for us but it is downhill from here and probalby a very steep downhill.
Our leadoff men killed us that inning. Absolutely.

Not a great job blocking the ball there Alex.

WTF? Is Avila doing playing leap frog?
He has to drop down and block that ball. That was brutal. Every play, every pitch, every thought, every nuance matters.

Will they ever throw anybody out? Seriously it wasn’t close…..

And of course Avila has no chance of getting Vitorino. Thes RedSox know how to play ball.
we Don’t. we only know how to front run and how to bash the ball when the pitchers aren’t throwing for real.

Just got home from Detoit. First inning things looked promising. Now, it’s biting nalls time. Stupid mistakes.

Miggy got thrown out for twice for complaining less than Ortiz just did.

I was thinking the same

same here

in the regular season

Red Sox with a lot check swings. Anibal keeping them off balance.

And Leyland is paying the price for leading Jackson off and playing Avila against the lefty.
What is infuriating to me is that both circumstances are so bloody obvious. It seems that JL has this chip on his shoulder that says “I’m the boss, screw you”
This is to important for ego. You can’t make mistakes at this level and mistakes at this level is what JL is all about.

It was SO

What’s bloody obvious to me is Anibal being screwed over by Joe West……and Anibal throwing way too many pitches need some quicker outs he may not make it through 5 at this rate. 51 pitches through 2 innings

GK, I WAS GOING TO ADDRESS YOU EVEN BEFORE YOUR POST. I am now thoroughly convinced. We have the technology. We need to have electronic umpiring on balls and strikes. It’s not fair to do otherwise.

1 and 2 killing us right now!!

Hunter continues to bsk in the afterglow of Jackson. He has been only slightly better than AJ but AJ is taking th heat.
Next year. No way the 1-2 guys are these guys. No BLOODY way.. AJ can’t, or won’t steal bases. He has no vision as a base stealer. Moves back to the bag against EVERY LHP.
Detroit has to get a quintessential leadoff man instead of trying to pound the square peg in the round hole like they have done with Leyland since he has been here..
Hunter is done. Mark my words. he may have glory this post season but he IS done as an every day major leaguer. This has to be recognized.

Miggy was ejected twice for less than what Victorino just said. And by the way you crowd the plate so much how could he possibly see if that was a strike or not? Douchebag.

This is where the manager has to come into play. Small ball. Good decisions. our power is not going to work tonight. Don’t play the game base don expectations of that.
Tough to play in Boston. really tough. Even if you get runs you know that can change in a Boston minute.
We need Anibal to throw strikes now. No walks

Runs boys despite too many pitches Anibal doing well……

It looked safe

Sure was close one angle he looked safe and one he looked out.

Great running by Omar

Crap….lead off double and and somewhat of a base running blunder.

Light a candle for Iggy

Oh, for chirssakes, c’mon on Tigers.!

Keeping the inning alive

Nothing like running into a bunch of outs………not a way to win boys.

It was the right thing to do. 1b and 3b ,go to home on contact and avoid the DP

Buzz kill of an inning.

41-26 mean anything?

Football score. Missouri

Missouri-Georgia score:

I’m liking Sanchez’s performance alot. I’m liking the swings were getting on the ball alot too. the score be damned.

Victor set the table for the MVP

Boy would they hate to give it to Peralta if Tigers happen to make it past the red soxs and Peralta keeps this pace up.

Pedroia just got a gift walk from West there in the 6th……..

Bring in Smyly

Puking …….so nervous.

Anibal is losing it a bit….

Boy I think he should come out….he lost the strike zone and they ain’t chasing it anymore….bases loaded 2 outs.

Mistake by leyland to leave Sanchez in to face drew with the bases loaded. he will not get a no hitter anyway. too may pitches.
Prove me wrong——please.

Got him on strikes, bases loaded. 12 K’s. Let’s go, Tigers. Gotta get something more going.

He did it. But time for the handshake

Well it worked out not sure it wasn’t a mistake………but oh boy. More runs guys it’s our pen we have to count on now.

Torii, we needed you there buddy.
now we all get to feel rather uncomfortable with AlAl coming in. Lots of walks tonight. We can’t afford ANY now—especially to the leadoff hitter.

Hold on to your ass, here comes AlAl!

Al^2 looking good so far!

Ya he looked good…….so nervous

You can let go now. Great job by Al!

Now, Valveras or Smyly

I’m not sure id take Peralta out…..if this gets tied up what do you have taken out your hottest hitter at this time.

Why Santiago? will he play for Miguel and kelly enters?

You think.

Tens stranded runners……pitching very well and still could lose this very easily. Sorry Avila you need not try so hard to get out of the way of that pitch. Wouldn’t have killed ya.

Anybody believe in Veras completely?

Ok two best hitters out of game. Even better.

Avila at least is hitting the ball, as is Jackson. Not ideal results but better progress.
Veras totally surprised me there.
That’s a weapon if we can start scoring runs and having a lead in late innings.
At least one Red Sox player should have been turfed by now by West.

I was thinking the same thing…Jackson and Avila taking better swings.

Barfing…….so nervous.

Smyly doing a little Nuke Laloosh….ala Bull Durham.

Gotta get some runs here in the 9th.
Boston does not lose much at home===need insurance/

When Veras has that curve working like that……man!

Smyly was 3 for 4 vs Ortiz

Well not getting that bunt down looming large.

If guys do there job we have a run there. Make sure AJ gets more at bats tomorrow Lleyland

Boy Don doesn’t usually look that bad

expanded his zone, the splitters fooled him

Why did JL PR Santiago instead of Kelly? Cost Miggy an at bat. Dumb
How do we win this game after that kind of effort by Boston in the 8th. That was specatacular playaing by them.Bush League announcing by Buck and McCarver.
Would you expect anything else/
Horrible at bat by AJ
Bat him 9th

Totally disrespecting baseball tradition with with announcing

Buck will be happy now/ Jerk.
Blame Leyland and and our hitters ……again for this position we are in/
Leyland puts us behind the eight ball every single game.

I agree Buck is a jerk
But I don’t agree this is Leylands fault. Hitters stranded way too many runners.

Well crap…. Hopefully Benoit can keep the win intact now……that would be a real shame.

Benoit needs to throw strikes.

Now ,they have home field advantage

Boy…..was that incredibly stressful game…my head hurts, my hair hurts……my toes hurt…. Too bad about the combined no hitter but the important thing is the game.

Jimmy should have left Miggy in til the ninth but it all worked out in the end. Cardiac Kids!

Boston Red Sox whine way too much, do not swing, and play 4 hour games regularly. So infuiating.

Leyland has to contribute. He is not doing a good enough job.
PRing for Peralta was appropriate but using Santiago to do it instead of Kelly was ridiculous. Take Miggy out for a runner not for a defensive move to replace your left fielder in an unnecesary convoluted move like that/ Bring Santiago in the 9th not the 8th.
Huge mistake. Brain dead and we got away with it. This team compensates for Leyland insteasd of benefitting from him

fair enough. albeit, we don’t know if miggy tweaked something. [fingers crossed]

Great job Jimmy Leyland!!

* Starting Peralta in LF and having his bat in there…
* Sticking with Sanchez and letting him finish the 6th…
* Using your bullpen very nicely…

Great job Tiger pitching!!
All gutty performances…

It was not a very clean 1 hit shutout but the execution was there when it had to be.

Great job Red Sox hitters for allowing Joe West to get all up in your heads…by the third inning anything called a strike that wasn’t swung at got a reaction from Boston hitters.

— Jeff

with JV and Max coming up – is it possible that we bring their offense to a straight funk? Some of these Sawk are youngsters – their coach has taken how many teams to the ALCS? Our offense -> i think we’re seeing and striking the ball OK – we’re not cold! The bullpen -> I’m seeing good things.
Feelin pretty good bout things now!

defense looked fine tonight too.

What Green Monster??? Peralta two hits. Boston one. Tigers win 1-0!!! Good job pitchers!!!!! Good night all.

Like I said before the game, don’t let them hit balls off the wall and you have to worry about it.

3 hits

Let’s get real.
We didn’t score. We didn’t get runners in.
Leyland took Miggy out when he didn’t have to. He was sitting on the bench (scored) when Leyland made the brilliant decision to remove his bat from the lineup. The game may have been a lot easier with him at the plate rather than Don Kelly!
Leyland led off the game with Austin Jackson again, in spite of his strikeout rate.
I am Tiger fan. Not a ‘we won the game doesn’t matter how Jim Leyland managedfan.
We don’t win another game this series if we don’t hit and leyland maintains the status quo.
No way we can win by scoring only one run. No way.
Great game. Great result.
And we can thank our lucky stars that things didn’t backfire.

From what I see you bust his rump win or lose all the time. Just give the guy some credit when the team wins. Maybe you should revisit the close to two decades of absolute misery before Jim Leyland started managing the Tigers in 2006 and be thankful we have a manager and a GM who put a winning product on the field year after year and have been in the playoffs for three straight years so you and I and every other Tiger fan can micro-manage playoff games from our couches.

I don’t necessarily disagree with your comments about Jackson or about removing Cabrera too soon. All I’m saying is when the team performs and wins give the manager some credit for the things he did right instead constantly berating him with negativity. By the way…your comments about Tori Hunter being washed up are ridiculous too, but you’re entitled to your opinions just like anyone else.

I feel like JL entirely ruins the game for Dan. I have suspected him of being married to JL for sometime now.

Kudos to Country Joe for holding his ground and not letting the whining Sox intimidate him. He called a very good game. Every one of those border strikes that they were crying about were at least in the black with the exception of the last one that was a couple inches low. Close enough.
Almost cried (but there is no crying in baseball) when they lost the no hitter. And I was afraid that would be the spark Boston needed, especially after Drew’s over the shoulder catch in the previous half. There was no sitting down after that. Our Tigers showed toughness and resolute with all the pressure the Boston players and fans brought to bear. Very proud of how they played. Best mental effort in a long time. Hardest thing now is keeping this level of intensity.

It’s hard to be negative after a win like that but I do agree with you Dan. JL managed the pitching well but the defensive substitutions I just didn’t get. Austin seemed to be swinging a wee bit better but I would like to see him 8th or 9th. I do like Omar following Jhonny though. A solid AB to protect JP.
I’d keep JI at SS. JL could keep starting Jhonny in LF. Later in the game he could always move him in to play short, and then use Ramon at short for the 9th. He has options. But as far as I’m concerned, it wouldn’t bother me to see Jose play every inning at short. And, though he lacks power, he has a knack for making things happen offensively. It’s called speed and quick thinking. Got to have him in there.

My point about Hunter is to not extend him and then have to play him to justify paying him. He was brought here to provide exactly what he has…this year. To expect him to be a productive every day player next year, is, well, beyond reasonable expectation. We need speed, we need youth. His skills, though great, will be another year older next year.
Washed up is not the connotation i meant. Do I think he is finished as a regular outfielder on a contending team? Yes I do. Can he help us as a role player next year? Yes he could. People can interpret my words any way they choose.
That’s what is great about opinions. I don’t think Aj is or will ever be a good leadoff man.
I think Hunter’s career as a regular outfielder are over.
I don’t think Jim Leyland is a good manager.
I like his personality and I think he has been good for the City and for the players. But I don’t think he is a good “manager”

Another great pitching performance by Anibal and the Tigers. Now time to get our offense out of it’s slump. So many scoring chances wasted. They could have suicide squeezed at least twice, and added a run or two that way. Brutal watching our lead-off and clean-up hitters at the plate lately.

Beck “:Tigers starters have 14 innings of two-hit shutout ball last two games, with 22 strikeouts.”
and 12 2/3 of no hit innings to begin the game

Talk about your baseball drama, a four hour 1-0 game. I haven’t timed it, but the length of commercial breaks is significantly increased I’m sure.
I thought Jim’s use of the pitchers was spot on. Sanchez had to finish the sixth, ala Scherzer on Tuesday. He didn’t bring back Alburquerque for a second inning. I was a little nervous with Veras but by that time the Sox hitters were a mess and susceptible to hard stuff.
I thought Jim jumped the gun on removing Cabrera when he did. McCarver was understandably confused by the move, since preparation is not Tim’s strong point, but all of us Tiger fans knew what was going on. If we’d lost 2-1 there would have been an outcry over that Kelly AB in the 9th. Sometimes better to be lucky than good.

Joe West actually called a good game and showed veteran postseason restraint in not running half of the Boston team. All that whining got the crowd in an ugly mood. The Red Sox hurt themselves. I guess they were shocked when all the borderline calls didn’t go their way, as usually happens at Fenway.
Good people of Boston, I love you, but that beard thing is beneath you. That was just goofy enough on the west coast with the Giants in 2010, but it looks ridiculous in Boston.
Chanting steroids at Peralta is also beneath you (Manny Ramirez anyone?) but I guess chanting HGH doesn’t have that sing song sound. All of that still demonstrated more class than the “Detroit’s bankrupt” chant in Cleveland.

Not to mention Big Papi who tested positive but was excluded for Senator Mitchell ( BoSox fan) report

That was a heckuva game and an incredibly important victory. If we can take advantage with Max and Ver now.
Absolutely need to find a way to get this offense going though. A 1-0 victory is euphoric enough but a highly impractical approach to winning.
We have to get production from the middle of the lineup. by that I mean ribbies.
This team is capable of better hitting.
The problem with those types of games is not only coming out on the losing end but also the added pressure it puts on a starter to be “perfect”.
Veras was remarkable last night. As was Al. When he gets the fastball over for strikes his slider becomes the best in baseball.

Jason:”Rondon restarts throwing program in Florida”
right side, twitter posts

Be nice to see him pitch (That would likely mean that we have advanced!!!!)

hypothetically!! if rondon comes back who is left off the WS roster from the ALCS pen roster?

Time would tell. Probably Coke if he pitches poorly, otherwise maybe Alvarez.

Jason Beck‏@beckjason16m
Leyland on Alburquerque: “If you try to send him back out there [for a 2nd inning], things normally don’t work out so good.”
Wow. That only took forever and a postseason loss. No matter how old I get, Jim always seems like my grandfather. 🙂

then again my mother (15 yrs younger than leyland) called me last night and asked why JL kept pulling pitchers who were successful. She wasn’t used to good bullpen management apparently.

Leyland lost that game by pulling Scherzer. I have no confidence in Benoit now and never did before.
