Game 3 lineups: Tigers vs. Athletics

So far today, the skies have gone from sunny to gloomy to sunny and now overcast, with the wind picking up to now blustery. Regardless, it has the potential to be an adventure for Jhonny Peralta in his first game in left field.

More than one Tigers outfielder over the years has said that day games can be tricky at Comerica Park. Craig Monroe said sunny days create a glare off the seats that make it difficult to pick up the ball off the bat. Others have said white shirts and jerseys create a tough backdrop. Curtis Granderson used to say that the brightness from the concourse level forced him to pick the ball back up on its path up.

Peralta does not have good numbers off A’s starter Jarrod Parker.

The video clip, by the way, comes from the Detroit Symphony Orchestra and the Detroit Childrens Choir from their performance Sunday.

Come on bats – wake up. I plan on playing so I can get the MLB radio to come in on an app I found – can’t get good radio connection in my office. Let’s win, win, win!

paying, not playing – am too excited to type correctly today – doesn’t say much for how my work will be today!

I hope I can get this game on TV here.
I also hope that the Tigers don’t have the Homestand Opener Blues again.
There will be homers today. Let’s hope they are from the boys in White uniforms.

Know the feeling. Definitely something going on the gut today. Very nervous.

Dan, here in Grand Rapids the game is on MLB network. It finally stopped raining but looks like it will get wet in Detroit.

whelp bout to go into my bubble – soas not to figure out the game before i watch it. UGH really wanna watch it! I think today the bats awaken. Multiple homers.

I am in that bubble with you, Evan.

DB-for me it is whether or not the national sports networks here have an agreement with MLB network

Dan, you should be able to pick it up on all the Sportsnet stations. That is where it is on in Toronto. I have it DVR’ed to watch when I get home from work. It will be hard to concentrate on work this afternoon.

Carlos.

Aaahhhhh!
Am getting the feed on SPN
Whew!
Best of luck folks. we really need our team to show up and we need everybody doing thei job.
That includes manager and coaches.

Now THAT should fire the offense a little. Heckuva job by Anibal after a rough beginning. Losing Moss could have been deadly. Coming back like that was fabulous.

I just don’t what to say. Well that’s not exactly true:
AJ is killing us. He’s giving away at bats, and giving the guys up behind him nothing.
Prince is an easy out. Every time. I hope he finds a new home as I just don’t see this guy performing when it really matters. Torii has to be more selective. 1st pitch swinging can’t be your approach every at bat.

Jhonny be good.

For a new left-fielder that drive by Reddick would not be a piece of cake–especially with any kind of wind activity.. Nice job and nice that Aj let him have the 3rd out.

Real exciting, huh?

C’mon guys. where’s the SWAG?

MLB Network just froze up. Now just listening to Dan & Jim.

Same issue, the Postseason.TV is terrible. No replies, raw feeds. Why punish the fans that have subscribed ALL YEAR to MLB.com? Games on MLB Network (which I assume is affliated with MLB.com) should be included in the package, the network feed.

I had to call Comcast. My other stations were fine. Just MLB Network out Then suddenly it comes back on. Twitter feed said something about lack of sun.

A’s are pretty damn discipined when they want to be. Anibal looks like he is nog gonna be shutting anybody out today.

Why are they pitching to Cocoa Crisp? Walk him!

I was writing that Miguel had to time to position himself in front of the ball as he should when Damaso Blanco explained that beside that he had to go ahead instead of going back ,and in the worst case scenario, the game was tied

Anibal kept his calm and did a good job in the end

Anibal is both OFF and ON today. Unfortunately his pitch count is getting way out of control. And we know what that means.
Really nice punch out of his nemesis, Smith.
We seem to be letting Parker have his way. then again when the bats are struggling that will happen. Omar just swang at ball 4.

20 scoreless innings. 1 run /9 innings. You dont change horses in the middle of the river but they better try a new horse or they will drown in the next arm of the river

Hey! AJ put a ball in play!

Something is going on with this team that we don’t know about. They just look so anemic. I’m trying to be positive, but it’s difficult. Somebody needs to get a big hit or string some hits together, but they just don’t seem to be on the same page. It’s still early, so maybe we can show some fire.

He misplayed it. Unfortunate as he has made that play pretty much all year. Jim Kaat figured it had something to do with his injuries (not being able to get in front of it).

We have expanded the strike zone all series and not made the Oakland pitchers work. Stop swinging at everything.

Need to get Rick up!

Now, the radio feed went out.

Geez, I thought Miggy hit a HR there for a minute.

me too

Healthy Miggy, it is a HR. We have become spoiled in the greatness of his hitting. Hitting a HR in that part of the park is amazing, we now think it is almost routine.

Victor delivers. I was expecting him to swing at the first pitch

Jhonny takes, Jhonny gives back

There was no real chance of out for him or another LF anyway

Sanchez is awful today. …

Team gets him back in and he coughs it back up….

The long rest

8 days without pitching.

And THAT’S how the manager can cost you a ballgame. Jim is blind.

When we WE hit a home run?

16 HR since September 1

As always makes the move to late. NOWAY in the world do you let him pitch to Seth Smith.

For sure. The numbers were overwhelming by Smith. Anibal had lost it. Alvarez was ready. A lefty HAD to be brought in to face Smith AND Reddick. JL doesn’t throw the pitches but he should be able to take them out when they aren’t throwing well themselves.

Jim’s decisions are killing us in this series. He’s making things worse.
Why did we put Porcello in the bullpen again? I would have used him right there, screw Alvarez and the lefty garbage.

Just saw a clip of AJ striking out against Gray.
Holy Crap!!!
You ever hear of “stepping in the bucket’?
Well, Austin is stepping in the bucket with his BACK foot!!!
How can you hit a ball when you are stepping backwards with your back foot?
Where is the hitting coach with that one?

Kathy, there are sunspot issues today. That’s why you’re losing your connection

Thanks. I saw that on twitter.

Come on guys – I am getting very frustrated listening to this game. We scored 3 before, let’s do it again and then tack some on to get a lead. Pick up Sanchez, he had a rough outing but he saved the team many, many times this year.

Torii forgot that was the third out.

Bob, Has Greg Zaun been reincarnated as Stephen Vogt?

Pollyanna consolation: Mattingly went crazy, Kershaw tonight with 3 days of rest after 124 pitches

Alvarez ,so far, has justified his spot

JL likes to talk about what kind of team he has. One that doesn’t run but relies on the 3 run homer. What planet does he live on?

WEll, that is how Oakland beat us today, not by running but with the long ball. We need to grind!

I could cry.

same here kathy – don’t know why it bothers me so much, it is just a game, but come on guys

And, how many more years will this group be together? How much longer will the Ilitch family own the franchise? This team was built to win a World Series. They have brought us great joy, but they have failed miserably when it counts the most.

Tigers have under 19 3 run home runs this year.

I like Jim Kaat.

He deserves to be in the HoF

The power outage is mind-boggling.

especially since we pay a small fortune for it.

I hope I have another year left. This doesn’t look good for this year. JV should have won Game 2. I can’t believe Sanchez did so badly. But in the end it does come down to the hitting. This has gone on for years. Add VMart, no change. Add Infante, no change. Add Prince, no change. Add Torii, no change. There has to be something else wrong.here. When they keep adding hitters and the problem persists. who fo you look at?

Usually, I dont take well when they lose but this time It was kind of expected. Just disappointed.
And it is true, we are paying for it. Gk and you with tickets ,Rich with his subscription,me with memorabilia

Torii walks and Miguel swings at the first pitch?

And all of us and our mental health!!!

Speaking of power, my refrigerator stopped working. Everything in the freezer spoiled.

I swore I wasn’t going to spend another nickel on this team and yesterday we decide to to come. …….big freaking mistake. Park was quiet they never gave gave us much to cheer about….screw em

Balfour went crazy

9 runs in in last 6 games….they got nothing. Alvarez is the only person in this game with with nothing to be ashamed of.

Worse, 9 in the last six postseason games

This puts a lot of pressure on Mister Fister. He HAS to pitch a shutout to be sure of a win. Of course, JV aleady did that and see what happened? Somebody said today that “they” would be hitting homeruns. Did you mean the A’s? The bullpen ain’t the only area that needs fixin’.

Veras did well

That was a looooooooooong game. I think there is a game tomorrow. Will everyone be watching?

No point in using Scherzer tomorrow. Pitching is not the issue.

Yeah. Even if that was a good idea, which it isn’t, Leyland wouldn’t do it.

After Mattingly said he will use Kershaw today, the question was made to Jason on twitter.

If they throw Max they are complete idiots. We’re down 2-1 and the only logical thing is to save him for game 5.
We’ll see Fister tomorrow.
Why can’t we hit? Why can’t we play good ball. All of the other playoff teams are.

The million dollar question Dan!

It’s a good article. Everyone is to blame. From JL, right on down the list. If they are a true team, they need to come together starting tomorrow.

Luis Alfredo Alvarez ESPN, pitchers are allowed fist pumps and shout after SO but batter are not allowed to celebrate their HRs?After Weaver- Magglio redux

Balfour´s cap has a different color were he put his finger once and again before taking it to his mouth and then to the ball. Nobody asked about that stain

Tim McCarver would have spotted it. And he would have made a big deal about it.
.

Well, I just finished watching that disaster. Sanchez was terrible. His command was not good. Yes, he had some strikeouts but that is not hard to do against the A’s. They are a patient aggressive team; meaning they are good at working counts but when they swing they are “all in”. As soon as we woke up and tied the game, he should have been removed for the 5th. And for sure, he never ever should have pitched to Smith. NEVER>
.
I read Rich’s comments. He is right on. That is how a manager can cost you a game. His in game decisions are terrible. He is not the only reason they did not win, but he made a terrible decision which certainly was a contributing factor. Players win and lose games. Managers do not win games but they can make decisions that can cost you a game. JL is a great players manager but his in game managing is not good and his decisions can contribute to losses. That is an undeniable fact.
.
Dan, did you hear Greg Zaun comment on that? He referred to JL’s decision as him possibly being abducted by an alien. He agreed with us. No way Sanchez pitches to Smith there and Zaun has the utmost respect for his former manager. And yes, Vogt and Zaun do have some similarities.
.
Balfour is a bit of a knob, but the Tigers cannot take too much offense to that. They employed a Clown (as Greg calls him) show for 3 years at closer. What is good for the goose is … you all know the rest.
.
Let’s hope we come out fighting with our backs against the wall.
.
— Bob

All I’ll say to me there is a big difference in doing a dance and throwing around f-bombs….had friends right in the front row with their young children who were not pleased with his vulgar mouth. He has to be a little more respectful of people who might take offense to his mouth. And he does it every game win or lose….I heard him earlier in he year and I was 15 rows back. He’s loud.

Maybe so. Like I said. He is a knob. It’s not like Victor’s language was PG either. I have sat close at games too. He is not the first sport player to drop F-bombs in the earshot of young children. I am not saying it is right. But he is not alone.
.
— Bob

just got done watching the game. what a mess we are! I think we win tomorrow though. Just a gut feeling. Too bad sanchez wasn’t on his game. had a rough go about it today.

Evan: the ever eternal optimist. I hope you are right, friend. I hope you are right.
.
— Bob

chances we get swept at home are low, offense is getting better, go into OAK with momentum might sneak one out.

QB running for Big Papi in the eighth inning of a tie game.

Yep. And yet another missed call by the ump.
.
— Bob

Loved the ending to that game, however. Rodney’s cap had black stuff all over it. Glad they won and it was a joy to watch good, competitive teams playing excellent baseball.

I’m glad to see some articles posted that point out that, if blame must be placed, it’s placed on everybody in that clubhouse. That’s everybody in the clubhouse. Some superior performances notwithstanding, this is a team failure so far. Not too late to turn it around, but there are serious issues.
To be perfectly blunt, I don’t see this team coming close to winning anything this postseason, and the main reason is the injury to Cabrera. While Leyland talks about “hitting balls in the gaps and over the fence,” in truth there is only one home run hitter on the team, and that’s Miggy. When anyone else does go deep, it’s a pleasant surprise.
Too big, slow, and no power. Bad combination.

Oakland scored today on an error by Cabrera, a sac fly because Peralta doesn’t know how to get momentum behind his throw, and Leyland standing there sipping coffee while everybody in the world knew he should remove Sanchez before the Smith AB. That leaves the solo homers by Reddit and Moss, and we have….you guessed it…….a 3-2 win.

no peralta you have a 2-1 loss jus sayin chief

Did I say no Peralta, chief?

I guess not. but take the bad with the good with ole jhonny. Dirks, 2E or Nick C., none of them would be locks to make that play at the plate that Jhonny didn’t even try on.

lol at reddit

3 things:
1. MLB Network goes down
2. Radio feed dies for a few minutes
3 Refrigerator takes a dump and I have to throw out steaks, pork roasts, etc.

Power outage! Big Time!

My satellite went dead momentarily during Victor’s last AB and when it came back he was halfway to the mound. It was as if the bad language had been blacked out, although that wasn’t it. Funny.

We can all hope for tomorrow to be a better day tomorrow but in the end. this is just another flawed Jim Leyland run team.
How may times over the years have we felt the “team” to be dysfunctional?
I suppose we have the potential to hit better and to get by with our starters but the likelihood of that is not very high. With so many of the other facets of the game comparatively inferior to other teams. We can’t throw runners out, we can’t steal (or run the) bases, we have an inconsistent bullpen at best. All of those things have to work in order to taste from the cup.
I am a little green (and yellow) with envy at the LHBs in that Oakland lineup. They went yard and we can’t.

My lineup for tomorrow:

Infante
Dirks
Miggy
VMart
Fielder
Hunter
Jackson
Avila
Iglesias

Yes, I’d go with Iglesias over Peralta. Lack of punch notwithstanding. Not with Fister on the mound.

Fielder, Fister and Avila to Texas for Profar, Feliz and Pierzynski.

AJ is a FA. I was thinking about that too,he fits this team. He has power, can call a game and has the attitude that very few in this team have.( Hunter, Victor, Alx2)

No way on Pierzyinski…… He’s a little long in the tooth.

and I can’t stand the son of a gun – just my opinion though!

same here – guys a bum with frosted hair tips

I like him.

He is getting older, but a great catcher. Very few injuries, lots of attitude and a good hitter. Off the field, he’s a great guy. He wanted to come to the Tigers after Chicago but I guess the Tigers felt they had their catcher of the future. I would welcome him with open arms.

Lineup for Game 4:
AJax CF
Torii RF
Miggy 3B
Prince 1B
VMart DH
Peralta SS
Avilia C
Dirks LF
Infante 2B

Infante at the 9 spots turns our lineup over well. Peralta’s bat is needed, and he needs to play SS. Iggy can come in to PH (bunt), pinch run or a defensive replacement late.

is that really the lineup!? Awesome!!!

No Iggy at SS? Good luck! Go Tigers!

This is NOT the lineup, this is what I would do.

There’s not a whole lot of room for changes. The guys who make the big bucks are going to stay put, no matter what. They could shake up he lineup a little bit, but we know that isn’t going to happen.

That post of mine up there was only to point out how three things can change the outcome of a game.
.
If AJ played here, everybody would love him. He’s a scrapper, not a politician.
.
Jim will go with a similar lineup today, and it’s up to the players to produce. It’s up to Jim to stay out of their way and use his bullpen better than he has so far. As my above mentioned post pointed out, there’s no room for screwups in the postseason.

If we got AJ here to catch for one year (biding time for McCann) then we would at least have one AJ on the team with heart.
