Game 1 lineups: Tigers at Athletics

We already knew that Andy Dirks, 4-for-8 with a home run off Bartolo Colon, was going to start over Jhonny Peralta in left field. What we didn’t know was that Alex Avila, 4-for-8 with two home runs off Colon, was going to move up to sixth. Jim Leyland said pregame the matchup was the main reason behind the move. No idea whether it would make Bob Melvin think twice about walking Victor Martinez in a big situation with first base open, but we’ll see. If he does that, then brings in a lefty to face Avila, I would expect Leyland would leave Avila in to face the southpaw rather than pinch-hit with Brayan Pena. But we’ll see.

Speaking of Melvin, he has loaded his lineup with left-handed batters and switch-hitters against Scherzer. The only two right-handed hitters in the lineup are tough ones in Josh Donaldson and Yoenis Cespedes. So the burden is on Scherzer to try to get some outs with his curveball, a pitch that did not get the results he wanted in his two regular-season matchups against the A’s. For more on that, you can check out my blog spot from earlier today on 5 Keys for Scherzer.

TIGERS (career numbers off Colon)

  8. Andy Dirks, LF (4-for-8, HR)

ATHLETICS (career numbers off Scherzer)

  1. Coco Crisp, CF (4-for-14, 4 K’s)
  2. Jed Lowrie, SS (2-for-6, HR, K)
  3. Josh Donaldson, 3B (1-for-8, 3 K’s)
  4. Brandon Moss, DH (3-for-13, HR, 2 walks, 5 K’s)

  6. Josh Reddick, RF (4-for-10, 5 K’s)
  7. Stephen Vogt, C (1-for-2)
  8. Daric Barton, 1B (0-for-4, 3 K’s)
  9. Eric Sogard, 2B (3-for-5)

P: Bartolo Colon

“Dirks is 4-for-8 off the guy and it gives us a better defense. I mean, if you’re not going to play him tonight, then you might as well not play him. … Of course, the one question there is he’s not swinging real good.” JL
111 over last 7, 222 over last 10. But with the wind blowing, he is, by far, the best option.
Avila? little sample but there was no other option

Keith Olbermann called it “a bulky abdominal muscle”.

I’m so tired tonight….hopefully I can stay awake. Lets play ball

It’s late for me too, gk. Let’s hope they get a bunch of runs.

Just got back from Ann Arbor my father in law is in the ICU there…… And I have to be to work at 8:00 am.

sorry to hear it GK – if i still lived back there I would offer you my guest room.

Torii took it on the elbow. 1-0. Go get ’em, Tigers

No rust so far

Well that’s a nice start……let’s go Max.

Two pitches in and I already have had enough of this HP ump.
— Bob

So first two pitches right down the middle and this idiot ump won’t call them a strike.

Well, Andy didn’t have a very good at bat, there. In too big a hurry.

Andy misplayed that,….I think

looked that way. But, the thought of JP out there trying to catch those balls scares the you know what out of me.

Yep for sure.

whelp thats it – cant take it anymore – muting TBS and accepting the delay with radio. Jim and Dan baby!!

Didn’t realize they were on radio. Thanks, evan.

I’m a nut- I love Jim and Dan like family members. Mario and Rod are ok, and national broadcasts are unnerving. I even love the intro music coming back from commercial breaks!

Way to go Max. That is how team’s win in the playoff. Don’t let those runs score from 3rd with less than two out.
Let’s score more.
— Bob

The ESPN in español commenter thinks ,and he is right, that Cespedes was already out.
Still, surprised that Cespedes was able to hit the slider

Pitches clearly out of the zone called strikes, those in called balls

Well Tigers need more hit and more runs…no resting on the 3 runs boys.

Andy swings on the first pitch. Come on.,

Like Bob said: Let’s score more.

They should be getting to Colon. They better because the A’s will get to Max eventually.
This umpire is awful. As bad as I have noticed all year. Hopefully the awfullness (sic) impacts the A’s more than us but we do not have a lot of discipline when it comes to working pitchers.

I don’t see andy doing the job for us. It could come down to Peralta being a starter and donny coming in late.

I’d go with Donnie, and maybe put JP in later for his bat if necessary. After watching some of these post season teams, I can’t imagine taking such a chance with JP. I love him, but he’s not a LF’er.

Eckersley is aweful.

This is the inning to throw a scare into the A’s. Top of the lineup. 3rd time through against a pitcher who is “off” a bit. Two runs this inning would mean a great deal. A shutdown inning by them means they still “believe they can’
Our leaders have to do the job. Right now. Make a statement.

Dennis Eckersley is showing his A’s bias. He is is completely offended by supposed slights whether real or imagined against colon and doesn’t even mention when max gets screwed.

You gotta be kidding! Torii was safe.
Dan and Jim said Miguel is limping.

He showed some discomfort after the swing not called strike

It was safe

with miguel hurt i wanna see prince make his argument for a leader on this team. c’mon prince we need you buddy – lets fire it up!

Well the worst has happened. The A’s fans have sensed the importance of this inning they have influenced their pitcher and maybe the umpires.
I need another angle but Torii looked like he was safe to me from the first base side camera.
Not a good at bat by Miggy. He hit the ball well the 1st two times but that was a very important at bat.

They showed it. He was safe. Had his hand on the plate and then the guy touches him in the chest. Migue looks good for maybe 1 or 1 at bats and then he looks like he’s hurting. If he doesn’t get a hit right away, it wears him out. I can’t stand Eckersley.

bag. Had homplate on the brain..

This is where Jim will have to decide if Miguel can carry on for 9 innings. If not, put Jhonny out there and if Dirks can’t get it done, throw in Donnie. I wouldn’t wait until the 8th or 9th inning, myself.

Victor looked safe didn’t he?

He was out. In one take, it looks like the mitt was over him but he was tagged well before home

He got his arm. Brookens thought he’d make it, I guess.

We need to try somebody else as the 3rd base coach next season. Yes another mistake.
— Bob

Miguel seems to be complaining about the call by TB

I saw that too. They have no confidence in him.
— Bob

I don’t know I think he as long as he was tagged was out. Meaning I couldn’t tell if the glove actually touched him. That being said I wouldn’t have sent him.
I hope they don’t allow A’s to get back into it. They just seem to stop sometimes. By the way another quality contribution from Dirks……bad ab dirks.

It touched his uniform on his arm, I think.

Vmart was out, so was hunter earlier

Hunter was safe by a mile. Watch the replay.

Another coco crisp walk that was actually a strikeout. …..yet the so called commentators mention nothing.

I am Andy’s biggest fan but he is trying to get fitted for the goat horns right now.
— Bob

Bad calls have gone both ways. many pitches well outside have been called strikes

Well here we go stranded runners all night and they have two hits and are right in it. Typical tigers hitters.

I’m talking about the commentators comments….or lack of comments.

Sorry, I have the Espn in español and the venezuelan commenters. They have mentioned it more than once.

NEVER throw a fastball to him

need a run this next inning

Or 5……. Pen game now….theirs is very good and well ours is not. Oh boy.

Tigers better save this game for Max and themselves. We’e made too many mistakes and cannot have any more.
It’s been a long time since I’ve seen a HR hit like that. .

Look at that last play. The guy makes an error at 3rd and Miguel cannot make it even close to 1st base. I don’t get it.

pull drew (just walked crispy)

And Crisp gets another walk which was actually a strike…..

Kelly in LF ?

For sure.
— Bob

Let’s go, Benoit!

whelp, heeeere we go!

My stomach is churning.

Don’t believe I have ever seen a pitcher complete a strikeout.

Yes! Time for bed.

HFA for the Tigers

Oh, my. Good pitching beats good hitting.

Yes!!!! Struck out the side.
OK. JV, it is your turn.
Go Tigers.
— Bob

if jv pitches right, these hitters will be in quite a funk in the near future.

that was a fabulous effort……… our pitchers. great game and great win. But this is a team that is in extreme danger. They are simply not hitting and don’t look like they can. For some bizarre reason they have gone into a team wide hitting funk.
We were extrermely lucky to get away with a win here..
All the signs pointed to two mistakes costing them the game. Max made one.
Iti is so nice to enjoy Max, Drew and Benoit tonight but there is no way this team can win if the highly touted hitters don’t do their job.
JP will be playing 3rd base before too long. Miggy is done.
Too bad because if Dirks doesn’t smarten up we have a real problem.
Hopefully Avila is OK–he got rocked twice that game and hard.
Great win and yet I am very worried about this team. horrendous hitting.

The TBS K zone display was ridiculously incorrect, and the umpire Wegner was horrible. I gave up on all of that and just watched the game.
Correct call to send Martinez home. Brookens can’t hold up everyone at third, and it took a clean execution to nail Victor by a step or so. I thought Miggy was complaining about Infante not taking secondbase on the play. I know I was.
Smyly is going to give me heart failure with all those pitches up in the zone.
I may have said it on here, but I’m sure I told my wife that the Tigers will have to win 3-2 games. Just the way I planned it. 🙂
Glad we start “early” at 9:07 tomorrow, although I’ll miss the first hour or so anyway.

I was thinking of you saying that going into the bottom of the 9th.

Evidently, Jim is letting Miguel call the shots. I’m not Miguel, but if I was, I’d take myself out. We lose so many opportunities because he just can’t drive the ball except for a single and absolutely cannot run, Yes, he’s a huge mega-star and players do play hurt. I think he hurts the team by staying in so long, but Jim probably taught him that. It was a great win because we hit early and had great pitching. There’s other spots where I would have yanked players, but we won anyway. Thank goodness. Go Tigers!!!! Good luck, tomorrow, Ver.

MLB Network talking about Gerald Laird. They like him, and so did I,

Kudos to Torii for trying to inject something into this very limp offense..
Show some creativity when it matters.
The umping willl be better tomorrow. Could have killed us tonight.
Brookens was right. With Andy coming up, yes, he was right. Dirks does not look like he’s very capable right now.
Gotta get Iggy going. Not squaring up on the ball at all.
Biggest game of JV’s year is today. Believe it or not, this is a must win.

Another Halloween night in Oakland. What the heck kind of strike zone was that? And the delayed calls by HP umpire made it even weirder. Max and Benoit were superb, Smiley was ok but got lucky. After the failed attempt to score Victor, all I could think about was how many times have we seen Tigers thrown out at home this year. And then here we go with the momentum shift. And it happened, just not far enough. Thank goodness for our pitching staff. Had this game slipped away it would have been very bad. Tomorrow they will have to play better and be prepared for Oakland to rebound.

“I’ve faced Benoit for years, when he was in Texas and with Tampa Bay, and he’s nasty,” the Tigers’ Torii Hunter said. “He’s all business out there. He doesn’t try to show anybody up; he just goes out and gets the job done, a true professional. “Smyly’s like that, too. Good stuff, good pitcher, very professional. That’s what you want late in games.”

JL quotes and TH quotes….night and day

This series is going five. The winner will lose two games. Remain calm. 🙂

Anyone watch Braves-Dodgers? While the TBS crew tried their best to stir up a controversy on the Dee Gordon call, they missed the opportunity to demonstrate how a catcher should catch and release on a steal attempt. We’ve all seen G-Money do it before, and he did it last night better than ever. That should have been the story, but they chose to show multiple replays of the tag, which remained inconclusive. A television-created controversy.
I read that this kind of play will be subject to review next year. Good god, we’ll never get through a game. 99% of calls will be upheld because the video is inconclusive, but not before we wait around while someone looks at multiple angles of the play.

Hey let’s rejoice we have bonus baseball for the third season in a row. It’s the rematch between the Oakland As and. Our Detroit Tigers in what should be an entertaining series. Fourth game ticket holders you are good to go. We open on the road with three runs in the first and Max, Drew, and Joaquin total sixteen strikeouts to make us 3-2 winners. Our manager posted a great lineup. Alex in the six hole worked as he knocked in our third and final run.

Game four is not in the bag yet. The Tigers could sweep. Optimism… 😉

Andy has to play better. didn’t look particularly good defensively. Couldn’t hit squat and is responsible for the Brookens decision to challenge Reddick by sending the 2nd slowest man in the playoffs home.
Dirks up with 1 out and the sacks loaded can just as easily end up in a pop-up or K.
Thought Hunter had a really good game.. Ran the bases quite well IMO. Taking 3rd on Miggy’s single in the 1st on a ball to CF? Nice. Not so for Omar on the Reddick play. He should have gone to 2nd on the air mail. Little things can be big things.

The forgotten man: Austin Jackson , he got the offense going.

It would appear the A’s didn’t have the signs while in Detroit. They just swing a lot and we hit their bats last time. I like last night’s strategy better.

A commenter for ESPN ( in español)mentioned that they were swinging at fastball out of the zone for strike 3,like they were expecting another pitch. He did not say it,but if they had the signs and were changed, that would happen.

Avila had a pretty good game. Certainly good for Max.
