Monday’s lineups: Tigers at Twins

Minny 006

As you probably have heard already, Miguel Cabrera is back in the lineup. Jim Leyland was limited in his comments about it today, but his quote from the weekend presumably still stands: If Cabrera’s good to play, he’s going to play.

Jose Iglesias is not good to play yet. Ramon Santiago gets his fourth start in a row at shortstop.

On the Twins side, it’s a much different lineup without Justin Morneau (who’s in Pittsburgh) and Joe Mauer (who’s done for the season with concussion symptoms). Oswaldo Arcia was supposed to bat cleanup tonight, but he ran into the outfield wall during batting practice and has been scratched. So it’s Brian Dozier batting third, Josh Willingham at cleanup, and a whole lot of less experienced players everywhere else.

TIGERS (career numbers off Mike Pelfrey)

  1. Austin Jackson, CF (4-for-10, 2 walks, 2 K’s)
  2. Torii Hunter, RF (4-for-15, HR, K)

  4. Prince Fielder, 1B (8-for-23, 3 HR, 2 walks, K)
  5. Victor Martinez, DH (5-for-14, walk, 2 K’s)
  6. Andy Dirks, LF (4-for-11, 2 HR, walk, K)

  8. Alex Avila, C (3-for-8, walk, 3 K’s)
  9. Ramon Santiago, SS (1-for-3, walk, K)

P: Justin Verlander

TWINS (career numbers off Verlander)

  1. Alex Presley, CF (1-for-3, walk)
  2. Chris Herrmann, RF (2-for-4)
  3. Brian Dozier, 2B (2-for-6, K)
  4. Josh Willingham, DH (2-for-17, 2 walks, 9 K’s)

  9. Pedro Florimon, SS (1-for-7, walk, 3 K’s)

P: Mike Pelfrey

A whole lot of inexperienced players wom for the Sox yesterday, so Verlander will have to……..oh my, Verlander.

Justinn Verlander is going to throw another No-No and Nick Castellanos is going deep today.

Is there an “echo” in here? I could have sworn I read that yesterday. šŸ™‚
Go Tigers.
— Bob

Except it was Sanchez and the HR was going to right.šŸ˜‰
— Bob

This off season like last year and the year before , there will be a lot of option for bullpen help excluding closers. Many of the rumored trade targets will be FA (and some would come cheap after a down late season)
That Yankees will be looking for a closer and that will drive up the price of Benoit and other top options. But there will be far better options than Coke and Albuquerque. They had the opportunity to trade Coke to the Braves ( allegedly)and balked at it

So which Verlander will show up tonight? Verlander of 2011 and 2012 or the one of 2006-2010 and 2013?

Let me rephrase Bob:
JV is going to throw another NO-No and Nick Castellanos is going deep.

GK I think the JV that we are damn lucky to have is going to show up today.

He makes me nervous? Yes he’s a good pitcher but he’s not a great pitcher certianly not the one Mr. Illitch is paying over 20 mil a year for.

Nick Castellanos is gettin abs tonight?

andy is hotter the past week

Pelfry has had mixed success against the tigers 2 runs, 4 runs, 5 runs and 3 runs.

8-0 vs Twins since 2010

Ya but there were a few clunkers including the last one were there were some no decision.

It feels like I’m watching someone get their teeth pulled.

Clete Thomas , the played that was DFA well after the evidence showed that Dirks was the best of all them; Raburn, Boesch, Kelly, Thomas.

The Tigers are still paying Boesch salary for this season.

He was the clearest non tender candidate in a while, i mean Boesch

Verlander 2 innings 2 walks no runs and a sky high pitch count.

Meanwhile tigers go quickly and somewhat quietly.

Pelfry 10.13 era month of September…….??????? It always amazes me how bad pitchers seem to have their very best games for the best hitting team in baseball. I know it’s only 3 innings but jeez it’s 3 innings.

10 SO in just 4

Verlander is doing his part. Where is the RS?

That looked low

Jackson could learn for that swing

the youngster snaps the score!

There’s 1

Can hardly believe Miguel just struck out….

While I’m happy for the run I can’t but think that twins got rather fortunate there. For one because of the ball bouncing in the pen and neither Miguel or Fielder doing their jobs.
While I see a few player groaning about the strike zone I think it’s been rather good and fair….and I almost never ever say that? Either I’m blind tonight or it’s been fair.

naw u blind. that wasn’t miggy striking out either. :p

Nice play by Santiago.

Well, do you take Verlander out the next inning or keep him in there?

i take him out. at this time of year, i don’t let them go much over 100-105….so they aren’t gassed in the POs. Get your large-bullpen some work.

Not liking the Miggy at bat. He looked beat the whole at bat and telegraphed that he would swing at the inside pitch.
It’s not just timing, he’s not swinging right. It’s injuries.

He’ll probably leave him in there for one more at bat and then lift him.

JL is leaving the starters way too long there , so he will remains one more.

well JV has made it easy defensively on cabby at least, no?

Had he hit the ball, it would have been a HR

The” no swing” by Avila

I’m kinda mad at Jim Leland right now.

And one more.

The day of the former players: Thomas, Hunter and Fien?

Walking Dirks for Omar?

they want to pitch to omar. ok sounds good to me.

Maybe Gardy knows something we don’t..

He was right on point.

Infante was 2 for 3 vs the pitcher

I feel bad for Drew.

Miguel did not help him

Next year will be his statement year. I think he is slowly getting very discouraged. Kinda has a “What’s the point?” demeanor about him.
Big test for AlAl.
Great game by Verlander.
Tough break for Omar.
Drew needs to learn how to field his position.

And he locked his spot

JL make the right call

alvarez or 1 lefty postseason roster?

Alvarez is lefty

shit i mean 1 lefty or 2 (drew and Alvarez)?

Sorry,I realized it too late. Smyly and Luke. But will be Drew and Coke unless he is really injured

Probably Coke.

i’m starting to believe yoU!

Who’s discouraged Dan? Do you mean you think Smyly is? It’s hard to know I think he just kinda has one of those ho hum demeanors myself. I think he knows starting is in his future but he’s barely not a rookie and he wouldn’t be the first pitcher who’s spent the first year or two in the pen. I would think he’d be happy to be getting a big leaguers pay check and traveling on jets as a pen guy rather than starting in the minors and riding buses. I’d think anyway.

And Valveras is back

[coughs, inhales beer down wrong pipe} BAAAHaHHHHAAAhahahahahah hell no, Valveras – no no no that’s rich! lolol

Veras is going to screw this up.

i would have left JV in to finish the game. How many innings did Lolich have? See ya Jimmy Smokes!

Not as many as Cy Young.

no doubter!

Excellent jump by Torii.

First blown save of the season. he was due

who we got in the ole pen?

Even nobody to count on……….

Luke better get a neck rub quick. Otherwise Downs, Bondo…..Alvarez

2E yea buddy thankyou thankyou

Oh that bullpen……..and I don’t mean Benoit, though they did get some good swings on him.
Smyly set this whole thing up by giving up 2 hits to LHB and by not knowing how to field his position. They had to use Q before they really wanted to.
Veras has been on my feces list since we got him. I just don’t like the way he pitches. Have no confidence in him.
Tough break for Verlander, he’s had few heartbreakers this year.
Not much left in our pen now. Downs, Bonderman and Evinrude??
Where were the bats tonight?

we’re due with the bats. hah at feces list that’s legit he has been terrible

Exactly there is no reason the likes of Pelfry should keep the Tigers to 3 runs. It’s really unacceptable. I can’t say I have the same feelings about Veras I think he’s a little better than good but nothing you’d go oh boy. If this pen. Doesn’t show some life I wouldnt expect to do much in playoffs. By the way I feel sorry for Tigers fans not Verlander. If he hadn’t tried to just strike everyone out and tried to pitch to a little more contact to preserve pitch count he might not of had to go to pen so early.

game 163 flashbacks

You can’t let Alvarez pitch to Plouffe

DD did not do a good job constructing this pen. Everything was a hope and a dream. And tonight our good guys let us down.

Veras has a 2.50 era with Detroit and 0% of his inherited runners have scored. So I don’t know. Is he Kimbrel no but feces?

IR :8. 0 of 8 with the Tigers. 0 of 4 with Houston. I checked that early, he only allow to score his own runners

2 saves/1 blown save .7 holds

Well that sucked big time………. Night going to bed it gave me a headache. This game between pitiful hitting against a bad pitcher, the stranded runners when managing to get a few hits and the disappointment of the blown save by the pen as a whole (AA) being the only one who did his job. Pretty disappointing. Justin was better today, but some of it was the team of mostly minor leaguers he was facing, but I wish he would of conserved pitches his inability to go even an inning deeper set the ball in motion. But the so called hitters are my biggest culprit. Jeez.

This is how they hit. No reason to expect more at this point. It’s a low scoring offense a majority of the time and the team’s success depends on pitching. That means every pitcher has to be on in every game. It’s a lot to ask.
The losses of Peralta and Miggy (power-wise) are huge.
What are we, 9-8 or something against Minnesota?

Twins’ “less experienced players” win the game. Tigers must have thought they’d just roll over and give up. Games like this make me think there will not be a good outcome in the play-offs. Weak hitting. Little help in the bullpen. No killer instinct.

GK you and just need to agree to disagree.
I don’t know what I’ve been watching but Veras has never impressed me.
The BullPen lost this one and DD is responsible.
