VMart is still doing fine but he’s sure not finding the holes right now.

Rx for failure. Getting men on, stressing out the pitcher, and then letting him off the hook. The Tigers are the worst in baseball at leaving runners on base.. Max can pitch a good game and all it will take is a couple of mistakes and the LOB will mean another difficult loss.

How do you figure they are worst in baseball at leaving runners on base when they are 2nd in the majors in AVG and OPS with runners on and with RISP?

Leadoff guy on via a smart play by Ramon. Put pressure on the defense!!
Now for crying out loud, do something with the opportunity.
Should be pressuring the defense again—no chance of that as Aj despises trying to use his speed to bunt his way on.

KC will take this station to station singles hitters all day long.

Right on cue. Sometimes I just can’t stomach the way Leyland manages.
We just breathed a whole lot of life back into Guthrie with that inning as well as the Royals’ lineup.
Look out Max.

Dan I’ve wondered if Austin is afraid of his hamstring?

9 hits…2 runs through 4. 0-6 risp 6 left on base. Same thing we’ve been getting a whole lot of lately, time to turn it around right here in the 5th.

He probably is. He seems to have an irrational fear of lots of things. Like stealing bases, diving for balls, charging base hits and going from 1st to 3rd. So add pampering his hammy to the list.
Max has done his job and that inning was a statement. His teammmates and manager need to to make a statement too.
Shame on Leyland for not having AJ lay one down.

KC’s bullpen is is warming up. Tigers have got to score here,.

You gotta freaking be kidding me 2nd and 3rd nobody freaking out. I can’t say on here what I am yelling. These inept boobs.

Let me say it first GK: P-A-T-H-E-T-I-C!
This is the team we saw in the World Series.
Victor has not been hitting with men on.
Andy is not a clutch guy either.
They are making Max’s life miserable and stressful. They are making Guthrie’s blessed.
It seems like a matter of time before disaster strikes in this one.

Guthrie on the ropes, but Tigers can’t deliver the knockout punch.

Through 5 …..11 hits 2 runs….8 left on base 0-9 with risp. That time was the worst. This sure as heck doesn’t look like much of a playoff team. I mean really could Victor And and Omar saw a total of 6 pitches. It really is quite pathetic. Better get their heads out of their butts. And no I’m not giving Guthrie any credit they were lazy in their approaches and have been getting themselves out.

Royals get on = instant threat.
Tigers get on (usually a couple on) = ho-hum.

Your not kidding. I’m so angry right now my head hurts.

You know, Octavio Dotel said last year, he wasn’t feelin it….the desire, the hunger to win. Do we look anything the that Cardinals team that won the WS?

All Guthrie has to do is throw strikes.
You mean Dirks not Omar right?
Vmart entering the town of Slumpville?
I like Dirks in LF for us but he is undependable offensively.
Get Perez stretched out. If we get a baserunner he may be important.

Heck, Guthrie has only pitched 77 pitches

We’ve ironically made it real easy on him even with all the hits and base runners.

Actually I mead Andy and Omar ….it spelled checked my Andy into an And. The three of those so called professional hitters grounded out weakly seeing between the 3 of them 6 pitches.

Scherzer reached 200 IP
Tigers 15.99 LOB per game. Last in MLB. According to team ranking. LOB is not an official stat

It’s uncanny isn’t it?
Anybody notice the 2-0 pitch to AJ/ he fouled it just past 3rd and was standing in the box watching it

12 K’s for Max. If the Tigers can’t get up;for this game, they are dead in the water,

110 pitches. A single. No bullpen call

Leyland playing the infield back. Better pitch Cain carefully. Open base.
We all knew this was gonna happen, didn’t we/

Here we go they got two in scoring position!

Maxwell’s Silver Hammer came down on their heads!!!
Shame on these guys for not being able to score runs. It’s unacceptable at this stage of the season.

Max was really good…..can’t say much for the likes of 1-9.

I think if I could reach into the tv and strangle Rod and Mario right now I would.

Another great at bat by Andy Dirks. NOT!

Where is Rondon?
His IP are a career high. But if that is the reason why is he on the roster?

I don’t know I’ve been asking the same question for a week even posted a couple of things on some reporters twitter accounts with no response.

Smyly great lead off double! Awesome. I have zero faith in this pen to keep this right here. Hope I’m wrong, it just seems when you waste opportunity after opportunity it eventually comes back to bite you.

Are they really going to lose this game?

steal a base, throw a wild pitch and score. Easy for KC.

Answer…….yes. And Max is not getting #20.

I guess I don’t understand the rules on interference because if that isn’t I don’t know what it. Congrats tigers you don’t stand a freaking chance now.

The batter is entitled to the batters box, with that said he stepped right in front of Alex. Should’ve been interference.

So mad I not only could scream I am screaming.

Truth is, and Max does not, this team didn’t deserve to win yesterday nor today.
I have seen that play ruled interference before..
Smyly forgets about runners all the time—especially at 2nd base..
He should be a starter as he he not ideal as a late inning guy IMO.
I hope these guys are ashamed of themselves. I know I am ashamed of them.

Why didn’t Max deserve to get a win? He pitched his butt off, did you really mean that?

He said the team not Scherzer

Alex again! Do I dare ask for the condiments to help me eat my words about losing this game?

Sure ‘am glad Jim wrote Avila’s name in the lineup and didn’t “rest” him!

Ok, it is Avila´s day

He was Ok too in 2011 . Then the 2011 playoff with tendinitis,2012 and most of 2013.

The team had Thursday off so your saying that he can’t play more the 2 days in row? BULLSPIT!

If you say so
Day game after a night game. That kind of abuse worked well in 2011

OMG. Unbelievable.

Okay, pass the relish. That goes best on words. LOL.

I know a win is a win, but some wins you just don’t feel as good about. Martinez stranded 4..Dirks stranded 5 and so did Omar. I feel bad for Max but I know he won’t say as much.

Obviously Max deserved it, as did Fister. I meant the team.
rule – 6.06 (c) – which says a batter is out for interfering with a catcher by stepping out of the box or making any other movement that hinders the catcher’s play at home base.

Victor’s bat has cooled, that’s for sure.

“Relish” the victory. It seems like they have been harder to come by lately. Now, what’s the word on Seattle? I hope the Tigers can handle them better than they do KC.

The Tigers took 2 of 3 on the road but last year they were a tough team for them 1-5. Probably no Felix this time

He had good luck sometimes, bad luck today and the last game.
Verlander , Fister and Sanchez have 4 tough losses each one. Porcello two.
Fister pitched a great game and lost. Scherzer ended with a ND and lowered his ERA

And the ERA, FP, K/9 are what will give him the Cy Young not the W-L.

Ya but it could be what puts him over the edge.

After the 13-12 Cy Young by Felix , W-L was put to rest as a measure of a pitcher´s performance.

Sheesh, Smyly has blown 4 saves and still has an undefeated 6-0 record. Have all 4 blows been in games where he gave up just one run? His ERA is very good at 2.38.

Yes, but the IR that scored dont go to his ERA

145. Anyway, he is among the best reliever avoiding runs

It’s a shame Max didn’t get the win, but his performance will be shown on all the baseball shows. He was just superb.

Wow, there sure is a lot of anger from some people. It is a game! The Tigers win! A win IS a win! That could how the Tigers win the world series! Go Tigers!

That 15.99% LOB has to be the individual totals added up, not team LOB. I understand stats not invented in the last 3 years. 🙂
A shame Max didn’t get his 20th but starter W-L records mean very little these days when they don’t go nine. The bottom line is winning the game somehow some way.
That said, I walked away from the game countless times today. They drove me crazy. We’re supposed to be enjoying closing in on the division title for the third consecutive year. The fanbase is antsy because we’ve gone 17-17 since winning in NY on August 10. So many long stretches of .500 ball this year.
I’m beginning to think I dreamed there was a fireballing rookie named Rondon. I don’t even hear his name mentioned by the media.
Is Benoit a bad ass closer or what??? The BAC?

There is website called teamranking , It is the only compiling LOB stats as ” MLB Team Left On Base per Game”

I like it. BAC. Now if we could rid of the SOC! Prince is hot, Miggy is not. We need some home runs, Cabrera!

If I remember correctly Rondon tweaked a hammy when he last pitched? Maybe Jason could shed a little light on that?

Miggy looks like he is coming around. Body language. Sense of humour. Hard hit balls.
The guy we need going and playing with intensity is Austin Jackson. When he is playing like he can he energizes the team. This has not been the case for awhile now.
Anger? No–logical disappointment would be more my way of describing it.

aww dan c’mon now: Jackson has batted with a .340/.402/.500/.902 slash line since August 18.

Tigers lead majors in LOB. They have now left on 1,157 runners or an average of
7 3/4 per game.
That translates to not pressuring the defense enough and not stomping on starters when they are down.
I guess it also translates into being shutout 10 times too.

They also lead baseball in AVG and OBP , the more runners you put on the more you will leave on. The Red Sox are 2nd in LOB as well as avg and obp.

All true. We also have people who can only advance one base on a hit slammed off the wall. It’s nothing that a few homers doesn’t fix, but we haven’t had that, today notwithstanding.

Well said Mayo. Wonder if they led in LOB back in 07 when Ty Cobb roamed center.. Maybe they were smart and did not bother to keep track.

I’m becoming convinced that Peralta is expected to play LF in the postseason, if we ever get there.

“Bruce Rondon seemed to be favoring his leg as he walked into dugout for rain delay.” august 27
september 2:
“Bruce Rondon hit 103 mph on Fenway Park radar gun on strike two to David Ortiz.” @beckjason

@Lynn_Henning:”Would expect to see Rondon today. If Scherzer’s lucky, maybe for more than one inning” .
So , he is not injured

Doesn’t explain the shutouts Mayo.

Rondon supposedly tweaked his back, but that’s been 2 weeks ago. Maybe they are limiting his innings for now. .
Between yesterday’s game and today’s, I had to lay down and take a nap. Watching this Tiger team can sometimes sap the strength right out of you.

Not meant for you, Dan. I like your comments. Leyland said before the game that his team wins with gap hits and home runs. I think they get shut out because they can not manufacture runs.

DB (my initials too), no problem.
Sometimes I am happy with this team when they lose and some times I am unhappy with them when they win. I tend to project their flaws, individual and team, into the post-season where I envision that not correcting them will result in “there’s always next year” hollow slogan. They say that Illitch is getting old and they need to win for him. Me too!!!!

Not hitting Guthrie today was not a good sign.

Not hitting in runners I mean.

I guess they can’t have everything but KC certainly shows them what speed can do. DD could try to get more but who do you dump to get more speed and the player would have to get on base to use the speed. Perhaps the top choice would be LF but Dirks does have some speed compared to most of the team. Some of this speed question may be the fault of JL’s managing. Has he caused AJ to stop using his speed or is AJ just too cautious (chicken)? Will JL use the speed that Iggy provides? I hope JL doesn’t do to Iggy what he may have done to AJ. Imagine a new manager on the order of a Kirk Gibson. He might force AJ into better base-running. How would AJ handle that if he is chicken? I use the word “chicken” on AJ because we have seen so many times when he will not slide or dive for some balls hit to his area.
Yes, he runs down many long balls and sets a lot of tables.and scores a lot of runs. I’m just not sure that makes him a complete ballplayer.

Honestly, AJ has tried to steal, but is not very successful. People obsess about this, but the guy is not a big base stealer because he’s not as fast as people want him to be. It’s not because he’s lazy or uninterested. Could he be better at running the bases? Yes, they all could.

The Tigers are not going to shake Cleveland very easily. They now lead the WSox 6-0 even with Sale on the mound for Chicago. This is more than a sweep. It is a total wipeout. Is that 12 in a row now?

He certainly frustrates me. he is still a reluctant player. It affects his confidence at the plate. He has the potential to be a superstar or darn close to it. But he plays with a governor and not an abandon.

Cleveland beating Sales and the Sox quite handily.

They’re killing him. “They must have picked up on something,” say the announcers. There might be 1,000 people at the game.

Lions: Special teams and penalties!!

Looking forward to seeing Castellanos tomorrow. Give the kid a chance, he will come through.

9-14-2013 in MLB. Bonus baseball as the Mets-Marlins played two. So we had sixteen games with FOUR of them shutouts. Royals-Tigers and As-Rangers were 1-0 classics. In sixteen games, we also had twenty-one teams score three runs or less. Does that sound like a high number?? How can MLB give the offenses some help next year??

Hey, Meteorologist man in Vermont. Did you do any studies on the effects of dropping September temps on MLB baseball scoring??? Does cooler weather lead to lower scores??

physically, cool air is more dense, thus more friction….so yes. To scientifically answer your question I would nee more resources, however. Because the affects of wind, scheduling day vs night games and water vapor would likely play roles also.

Cleveland is 5 games behind us and a HALF game behind both Tampa and Texas for WC. It looks like they’re going to make the postseason. They have to survive the three games in KC this week then they’re home free, schedule-wise. That team doesn’t play down to their competition and appear to score runs more consistently than Detroit. They in fact appear to be a better team than Detroit, other than head to head.
Another item I’ve noticed: both Texas and Detroit have suffered from their Biogenisus suspensions.

Good team win for the Tigers. I’m sure Max and everyone is waiting for that 20th win, but he did pitch a solid game today and kept the Tigers in a position for victory.

Our team has to start hitting again. And playing smart baseball. This includes Jim Leyland.
KC will be hungry and maybe, just maybe, they can feel that Wild Card.

Who’s the bigger tobacco chewing, dribbling slob? Eric Aybar or Emilio Bonifacio?
Bonifacio getting picked off twice was beautiful.
Scherzer surprising everyone with that purposeful and accurate throw was, well, surprising.

AJ always has a big ole wad too

Miguel 350. Trout 330. The batting tittle is his already. Being second in RBI and HR will be still a feat.
Of course , he will fall short of the 150 RBI that is the mark for a Venezuelan

To keep chewing yesterday´s ( the day before in fact) breakfast
Fielder BsR -5 . Only 5 players are worse than him running bases and only Victor Martinez plays for the Tigers. Even Peña and Cabrera rank better than him. Speed 1.2 , only 10 are slower than him( Only Victor plays for the Tigers) Some fans think he is fast to be a heavy man. He is not. He cant run and cant slide.
The throw had to be perfect? Well, Kansas have the best OF in MLB( by UZR and we all know how good they are after watching them) and Escobar is among the top SS in MLB. 4th best by UZR 8th by DRS

Scherzer had 2 PO last year .Now, two this year. He was the only pitcher affected by the ban of the fake movement. I never saw anyone Po with that movement until Granderson failed by it.BTW, last night he had a pretty good running from 1B to 3B, he learnt that with the Yankees. Never turned back ,always with the eyes on the coach.

As they say, there’s a big difference between running hard and running fast.

got a ticket for game 2 of the ALDS – so lets wrap this thing up boys!

We would be a better club (in terms of winning) if JL puts aside his managerial ego and plays the game properly. Saying ,carte blanche, nor running for Fielder, and almost bragging about it, is indefensible.
The idea is to win not dictate.

The Tigers should absolutely pummel Joe Saunders tonight. He’s been horrible.
They may want o be a tad more selective though in order to accomplish that.
This is a team where fans can reasonably hope for a series sweep.
The Tribe is unlikely to slow down much so the onus will be upon this team to play good ball and make their own destiny. Can’t fool around with not hitting and running, or getting into scoring position or not pinch-hitting/running. Or putting in AlAl with a 1 run lead in the 7th. etc

You would think so, wouldn’t you Dan. But Saunders is the type of “touchy-feely” pitcher that gives our boys fits. If they are patient, they can smack him all over the yard; but if they swing at his pitches, they will struggle to score runs again.
— Bob

how about those seattle bats tho? This link to USATODAY says the Ms have a 117 less men left on base but something like .50pts lower team BA. Sounds like an offense that can be shut down by good pitching….

Thanks, 7 something/G is more reasonable than 15 /G

Dan you see my post earlier? Jackson has batted with a .340/.402/.500/.902 slash line since August 18 – so no gettin on him for not batting :p

Is today a good day for 2E? .333 in 6 abs for him, Cast never seen him before…. Cast seems lost to me. But one of either Cast, 2E or Jhonny are needed vs. LHPing. Big question marks for all three, yes?
Interestingly Vmart doesn’t hit him well….. .167 in 12 abs… He has cooled off – why not give him a day off instead of facing someone he struggles with? Could bring him in late once Saunders is chased…

I only know what I see. I see AJ not playing up to his potential. I see a team in need of energization. I don’t see him providing that.

I over you are awful three things.Quality, speed and appraisal may be rules of the industrial concision, but they are no rules, this determination serve the followers in the knowledge curtness because survival and development.Appreciate the however and struggle you submit into your blog and precise report you offer.I secure to go to a handful web call for in the lifestyle two days.
