Saturday’s lineups: Tigers vs. Royals

Some fairly bad numbers for Tigers hitters against Ervin Santana, who tossed 7 1/3 shutout innings on two hits against them July 19 back in Kansas City. He has been alternating decent starts with bad ones for the better part of a month now, so we’ll see which Santana shows up.

Prince Fielder is the major exception to the numbers against Santana. Even after going 0-for-3 against him in July, he’s still 6-for-13 with three home runs off the former Angel.

Reminder: Tonight’s game is on MLB Network for those of you outside of Michigan and northwest Ohio. As others have pointed out, it’s also the Free Game of the Night on MLB.TV, so if you don’t get the network, you can still get the game.

Tonight is also the free MLB.TV game so those of you without a subscription or MLB Network, fire up those computers. No excuses! :-)

first game i can watch since the redsox series :)

If they can hit Santana around a little bit, it may be a positive trend in the making.

Davis is now only 3 back in the RBI column……….I know Miggy has no chance to catch him for the triple crown, I’m hoping Miggy stays ahead of him in the others.

I’d rather see the Tigers win. At this point, I’m not thinking about Miggy’s numbers. Are you at the game, gk. It is a gorgeous day here in MI. Probably will be cool tonight,

Not tonight. ….it was s pretty nice day. It was cool there last night.

JB,
What’s it gonna take for Tui to get some playing time?

Not striking out and particularly against lefties.
He is in danger of losing his spot to Castellanos.

he’d have to get some playing time first :p

He’s more in danger of losing his post season spot to Jhonny Peralta.

I agree, Peralta would be chosen over Nick. But if 2E keeps doing nothing, he might not find himself playoff bound.

Tui who?

He was unable to adapt to breaking balls and had not opportunity to get it going.

Peralta could enter for Perez.Still would be a spot for Castellanos or Tuiasosopo

Perez was in the 25 roster by August 31 for nothing so he will be replaced by Jhonny who is eligible for the postseason

Felder touched the ball.Fair ball

Yep got a break there!

Doug isn’t fooling anybody tonight….uh oh.

pretty bad running and the umpire called the out before the runner was tagged

I’d you see the replay where it looked like he was tagged on the slide?

The old contact play.

Avila did not thing so . He tagged him again before he touched home anyway

Fister looks pretty hittable tonight.
As to Hosmer—the guy is swinging reallly well and from the heels.
He has a very wide stance and attacks the pitch by widening it even more when he swings. I would think this approach will enable him to punish anything belt high and lower. High fastballs might give him trouble.

That worked like a bunt

What is it about Santana and these tiger’s hitters? Now Santana has had nice years but even when he has been off we still don’t hit him at all. Sometimes guys just have your number I guess.

243 .314 .449 .763 Tigers vs Santana.

As Rod¡ said they have 2 SB vs Fister but two CS and now a pickoff

Rod?

One angle it looked safe to me one angle looked out. Sure didn’t seem like he argued much.

Other teams must be good enough to lay off or foull off the slider…and we are not.

MLB. com just showed that Santana leads MLB in swing and miss vs the slider

Some teams must be laying off of it?

38% swing and miss.

3.35 ERA. That is better the Verlander, Fister and Porcello

Santana is 62th in RS. His W-L is meaningiless. He has been good this year

My original comment above he has been good this year but even in his off years we have not had success against him.

Last year he was 1-2 vs the Tigers. But yes ,7-3 over his carer. It happens. Unlike Chen he does have Tigers number

Someone could explain those broadcasting the 17-11 with 3.90 in not better than 8-9 and 3.35

And if this umpire continues to give him pitches off the plate it just might be a very long night.

At least Fister is getting those same calls off the plate. Man sure is a boring game so far!!

Couldn’t agree more.

Crap I thought that was gone……………argh.

Santana is just getting o 70 pitches.

OK. Light a candle.

At this point, I might think about a pinch runner,

santana out!

Their pen is really unhittable…..

I can’t believe he put NC in there, Make me wrong, Nick.

Sure wish we would hit again.

Nick C has not impressed me. bring back 2E at least he might run into one.

Rather have Pena or Avila hit than Nick…..Too young to anxious. Swings at absolutely everything. He hasn’t shown me he’s ready… What do you think?

not ready at the plate

The crowd is just waiting to go crazy.

Is something wrong with Pena? Surprised Holaday in and not Pena.

doug shouldn’t be out there. Rondon should be warming up. strike 2 jim.

if the ball passes the pitcher, no play

That’s right, Torii.

Nice Torii

THE YOUNGSTER!

Is something wrong with Rondon? Has been in a game in a good long while.

At least two batters late

It is not only Rondon,The bullpen is the less used in MLB and he is overworking the starters.

Torii has not been too impressive lately with his throws – that one was a doozy though! Way to keep us in the game!

Ya but Rondon in nearly 2 weeks? I haven’t even seen him warming up

Audition for LOOGY?

arrggh

Well haven’t had too many opportunities and when we’ve had them NOBODY can get that big hit.

2E has not been making a lot of contact lately. NC does get his bat on the ball and anything can happen if you can at least do that.
AlAl in? Not a good move.
No way would I have PH for Iggy.

His legs are hurting.

Make my day, Tigers!

Yes , a PR is needed here

And i was right

Gotta PR for him.

Prince looks hurt.

Why was there not a PR. JL drives me crazy.
.
— Bob

Me, too, Bob. There’s several moves I would have made differently.

what a crook of poop – that’s 2x now.

If he’d put a pinch runner in…….nevermind,. Armchair GM.

Thanks for proving my point JL.

Well I know it’s a tough decision especially if you only tie it up but? But that’s why you pinch run not to mention if Prince could slide instead of roll. To bad dirks had such a pathetic at bat and couldn’t even get him over. This is wear JP is missed. Very very disappointed

That is why you have Hernan. JL is very stubborn when it comes to hopes and dreams. He’s worried about what if they tie? He needs to worry more about actually manufacturing runs and getting half a chance to tie the game.
Runs are at a premium, Prince scoring from 1st base is a longshot..
Perez PRs there and you can hit & run with VMart. You can bunt with Dirks or turn Hernan loose. You put pressure on the defense. You stir up some dirt. You don’t think that you might lose Prince’s ability to hit a long ball later in the game?
The manager cost us a chance at this one. It was obvious.

On the final play, I saw on deck hitter Pena sprint over beyond the plate, signal Prince to slide, but didn’t give him the direction in which to slide. If Prince had come to the inside, he may have slipped a hand in. Little things, always the little things.

We all knew from the moment that Omar hit that ball that Prince was going to be out at home.

A neutral observer would absolutely love these KC-Detroit games. Unfortunately for us, we see the Tigers get shut down far too often. This offense, believe it or not, needs yet more help.

Nick C pinch hit for Avila? LHP or not, with the improvement AA has shown lately, stick with him or use Pena. Bottom of the 9th, with Prince at first, wasn’t there anybody faster left on the bench? If Omar makes an out, the game is over anyway.
But Omar doubles and Prince is out by 2-3 steps. Then a tie game with Omar on 2nd base. Holaday or PH Pena could have singled him in for the win. I think JL blew another one. IMO.

JL has never had my vote as a late inning strategist.
The moment Prince walked he should have inserted Perez.
After VMart failed and Dirks was up, he could have PR for him again.
And certainly with 2 outs and less likelihood of Prince getting up again (what a flimsy excuse) and the need to be able to score on an extra base hit. Why not Perez then?
JL can’t get out of the long ball mindset no matter what.

Hell, I gave up complaining about Leyland. What’s the use? He’ll never leave. I see the same stuff the rest of you do.

I don’t know if I agree JL blew it, I’m conflicted on the decision to PR him, or at least I understand why he made the decision. Prince doesn’t slide he rolls and I even wonder if he stayed on his feet if he could jumped around the tag? I don’t know. Two teams this year we’ve had the worst time with KC and Angels. We don’t play them we stand a chance.

The decision I really question is the PH of Castellanos. But these guys had opportunities to get so,e big hits at different times in the game and NOBODY could get it. Nothing I’m going to kill anybody over except may Dirks he had some bad at bats, but nobody deserves to get trashed tonight including Leyland.

I guess, but some of the stuff this crusty old vet does as our manager is mind-boggling. You think you would learn from mistakes.

Well, I don’t agree with Jim’s decision. The other night I had to turn the game off because it’s the same old thing…..,station to station, slow joes clogging up the bases. Speed always puts pressure on the other team. A terrible loss for us, when we could have won it with common sense.

“I’ll never pinch run for Prince Fielder” was the reason Jim just gave. That’s the quote, just saw him say it. Now if that’s not sound reasoning, what is?
When the officer pulls me over for going 90 in a 45, I’ll explain “I always do that.”

That’s why Boston went and got Quintin Berry for situations just like that. They don’t have a problem pulling anybody for a pinch runner and a win.

was a win possible ? no

The game most certainly was winnable because we would have been tied.

I didn’t say I wouldn’t but I also understand why you wouldn’t too, station to station absolutely that’s the team DD built. It hasn’t been much different in the
Ast 8 years.
.
Noticed the game in Minneapolis is still in a delay just looked at the weather report for tomorrow…70% chance of rain through most of the day here. Hopefully we can get it in and hopefully Max gets #20 and the Tigers get a win .

Rain is predicted for the next 3 or 4 days. The other night I got so frustrated watching Miggy when he could get on base, not be able to run. It has infuriated me for two months.

Santana has 3 shut outs by my account 2 of them to the Tigers….KC pitching has 10 3 of them to the Tigers.

The Tigers are 16-22 in 1 run games. 9th in the Al. Those are on the manager
With their run differential the Magic number must be 5 by now. They have left 5 W on the table
DD keeps giving JL the player only to keep them in the bench. Not a single manager in MLB but JL keep Fielder there . Would he be offended? he is slow and he thinks otherwise he is delusional.
He did not slide or did in the wrong direction? the fault is on the manager that put him in position to fail
Kelly as PH? He is now 0 for 15 as PH with one meager walk. 208 in his last 10 games.
Avila starting again? when he will realize that Avila needs some rest to hit?

Avila doesn’t need any rest he just got off the DL.

Catchers dont play everyday. And Avila has batted better after a day off

been there one day after another landed him in DL in the first place

A SOC reared its ugly head today. To make a statement like that about a playoff contending team and in front of an intelligent fan base is reprehensible.

Hopefully the WSox’s Sale can put a stop to the Indians Sunday. The odds are becoming greater every game. The Indians have an 11 game winning streak against Chicago. The Tigers need Max to get that #20 Sunday.

I want the Injuns to keep winning and get a wild card spot. If the Tigers are going to win the division they need to earn it by winning, no backing in.

you mean you aren’t rooting for the yankees!? :p

The bright side, teams that crawl into the postseason like the Tigers are doing go deeper that team walking over.

while i don’t want to crawl through the backdoor – i also know its not how you entered it’s when you exit. Dodgers and Pirates were hot near labor day and aren’t anymore, Redsox were hot a week ago….. I wanna be hot in 3 weeks from now. Cabby is getting closer – JV is too.

I don’t think there’s any other sport more difficult to predict than baseball. My main concern with Detroit is their offense. I said a few weeks ago, just picking a number, that Cabrera was 70% of the offense. Unfortunately, we’re getting about 50% of Cabrera and I don’t see that changing this season.

i see that changing this season, however. thus my optimism.

Lost in last night’s great pinch runner debate was the fact that little Omar Infante delivered a HUGE hit. Are we going to be able to afford him? And how does he perceive his treatment in Detroit?

If we have treated him well, Omar will give us a chance to beat his best offer much like the Sanchez situation last year. Nationals have had a nice lately. Do you see them running down the third place NL Central team???

The Nats are in a good streak, but the Reds aren’t struggling. I see it as Washington building on something for next season.
Omar’s perceptions will also include his time here from 2003-2007.

Absolutely nothing more exciting than trying to score from first base with two out in the bottom of the ninth. Gordon got to that ball quickly. The relay was by no means perfect as Escobar threw the ball to the Tiger dugout side of the plate. Alas, Perez made the tag in time to get Prince out. Kansas City won the toughest of all 1-0 games. They scored in the top of the first inning and held off the home team for nine innings. Santana was just nasty from the get go. Our only chance was Cabrera’s deep fly with a man on. Game time temperture kept that one in the park. Fister did a tremendous job other than the ball Hosmer hit in the first inning. Just a great September ball game. We lost the season series to these guys but let’s bounce back to win the series this weekend. Go Tigers!!!

Yep, reminded me of Inge’s extra inning double in game 163 that scored Don Kelly……who had pinch run for Huff.

We have to turn the page. Today, we start all over.
.
This morning I woke up still mad.

Lineup: Jackson 8, Hunter 9, Cabrera 5, Fielder, 4, Martinez DH, Dirks 7, Infante 4, Avila 2, Santiago 6. Scherzer is starting.

No Peña again. He has been hitting but gets no playing time. Laird redux, another one that, probably, wont comeback

Point well taken. I’m guessing it’s Avila because he’s been throwing better and it’s KC?
On that topic, Wilson Ramos starts his 23rd straight game today behind the plate.

Infante, close and late:.326/.367/.500/.867
Since the ASG:.336/.347/.457/.804
Slugging:450 just 6 points below Fielder
He is 32 and is having a career year with number that are sustainable by the way he is swinging. Scutaro got 20/3. He will be looking for around 32-36/4. And he can get that as FA and he already stated that he want to test the market.
He did look that happy after the Rasmus incident ( the pitchers that day did not retaliate) and he took his time to come back.

Sound like “he gone.”

Schemhl:
“Iglesias was spotted limping in the clubhouse.”

Iggy limping may actually be the story of the post-season.
Miggy has 3 dingers off Guthrie. The team has hit him fairly well in the past even though I think he has one two games from Detroit this year.
Hard to believe this team has been shut out TEN times this year!! Especially with Rod Allen continually calling it the “best offense in baseball”

Dan, Iggy was limping yesterday before the game.

Seems like he could wear spandex aroung his calf for more support. Not sure if there even is such a thing. When my back is hurting, on goes the spandex for extra support.

And, yes, I know it’s not his calf that’s hurting. I had shin splints in HS as a cheerleader. My brother, the football player, diagnosed me. Instead of running, you’d think they would have him in the whirlpool or running in a pool.

I think Jim has issues with Pena. Just my opinion, though.

Thanks Kathy, I did know that IGGy has been IFFy the last while. I think him not being healthy will impact our post season. Not sure if they will be able to get him right. It’s a certainty that DD will bring JP back for insurance at short as well as his RHB.
Hopefully Miggy will be back to almost normal. He seems to have lost his sense of the outer half of the plate. It’s almost as though any soft stuff out there should be left alone as it is likely to be a ball anyway.
Helton retires this year. I bet Prince wouldn’t mind hitting in rarified air! DD should do what it takes to pry Tulowitzki from them. Tulo at 3rd means Miggy can go back to 1st. Would take a starting pitcher too. Realistically though, Tulo will not be leaving Colorado. That scenario is as hopeless as Prince Fielder trying to score from 1st.

That a boy Max. You can throw the ball with some authority to 1st after all. Sneaky!
And I like the way he dusted Hosmer with the HIGH fastball. I truly believe that is the pitch he can’t hit right now.

Shin splints are a generic term I believe. They can be simply overused muscles, stress fractures or from flat feet. I think the treatment is all about the same and neoprene socks would be part of it.

Just an FYI: I am watching the game today on TBS…..in case that helps anyone.
.
Max is dealing. Cabby is going to homer today. Omar should come back, unless he wants to bat cleanup for a crap team, or 2B for the yankees (I think cano is gone, and NY will then offer Omar the moon). Shin splints are hell – i had them recently. JL has obligations to people who have issues with Alex – which in turn affects Pena. Jl has no problem with him – jus seems like it.
.
Avila i think will get some hits today too

oh i guess he will! lolz

Interesting so far. Speed is so darn important. Give credit to Omar for beating out that DP ball. He was hoofin’ it and it gave us a run.
Miggy appears to be back on his game at the plate today. Not sure but he seemed to be moving quite well and even rounded the bag on his single.
Fingers firmly crossed.

Max has had some pretty quick innings. Wouldn’t it be cool to see him win his 20th and complete his 1st ever too?

All kinds of hits but only runs courtesy of a bomb. Please guys, let’s put something together. and not strand record number of runners.

He is making contact. Now, he needs to regain power

He reached the 200 IP

Everybody get on the same page.

sheesh thank gawd JL played Alex Avila today, right??? could have been shut out again!
