Friday’s lineups: Tigers vs. Bruce Chen, take 2

It was an interesting question whether Jim Leyland would make any lineup changes this time around against Bruce Chen, who held the Tigers to five hits (one each by five different hitters) over seven innings Sunday in Kansas City. The Tigers roughed up Chen on August 18 with much the same lineup, the one key difference being Brayan Pena at catcher. Tonight features the same lineup as Sunday, including Avila behind the plate.

Bruce Chen is a decent pitcher, and Verlander has had what for him is a down-year; should be a competitive tough game for the Tigers.

Chen can give us fits.
This team has to hit. They have not been hitting.
I’d have Castellanos in there today.

when would you play 2E next, then? never? should we send him home or what?

Dare to dream? Is Avila starting to come round? Even the throws have looked better lately.

It takes patience when facing Chen, and patience is something the Tigers display about twice a week. Chen last Sunday: 7 IP 81 pitches 0 BB.
I do like the lineup. I’ll like it more if Torii shoots to RF and quits overswinging.

JV needs to POUND the strike zone. Too often he is deep in a count.

JV playing with fire. Too much power on this Royal team to allow that many fly balls.

I know Miggy gets into funks but I think playing him and aggravating his physical problems has really contributed to this slump.

I miss the singing hot dog man.

my take on that guy: he was awesome, unless you wanted ketchup on your dog. Also, he should have roamed around the park instead of being in 1 section…because he annoyed the crap out of the people in those sections (who had to listen to him all the time).

He wasn’t in one section. They told him where he could sell. Also, he sold the most hot dogs. It just seems weird not to hear him. Shannon Hogan got her wish.

I predicted he’d get fired after she showed her disgust and displeasure of him.

That kind of gestures by a rookie are not smart

And he had no play either

However, the SS calls the shots in the infield.

which gestures?

He was hitting his leg with the glove after Miguel took the grounder, complaining. He had no play there. He must respect the veterans, he is the new guy.

I’ll have to watch a replay if you’re referring to Jose Iglesias. He is a very mature young man and is passionate about the game. I don’t believe he would ever disrespect Miguel.

I sure wish Miguel would get it going.

he will he will

prince :)

Fawler and Francona never bunted against the Tigers. Sportsmanship, something Yost lacks

Torii, Torii, Torii.

the Youngster steals 3rd! You kiddin’ me?

apparently….bawk

Prince 3 quick RBIs…..kinda feel bad for dogg’n him now….

Maybe he needed to be dogged. He certainly deserved it.
Time to yank Verlander. His fastball is not sitting 93, can’t throw a good slider, and seems to be making the wrong pitch.
Can’t rest on 3 runs here.
Big test for Smyly or AlAl. We need Smyly more than Al.

JL must have heard you – and it worked! Re: prince…some guys you know they are going to bounce back. prince is one of those guys. Carlos, Maggs….same ruled applied.

Oh, I hate misplays like that.

If I’m Jim Leyland I am putting in Worth or Ramon defensively for Miggy now.

he’s gotta get the timing back – he isn’t goin to get it on the bench!!

smyly. he gone. sheesh the skip is brought the hook tot he park tonight eh?

VERAS THROW A STRIKE C’MON!

Can anyone throw strikes?

Bottom of the 8th? He’s pretty unlikely to hit again and all he can do is tweak himself at the hot corner—-if he can get to the ball.
You put your best defense in late innings and right now, Miggy is not the best in his condition.

Tonight i really like JL’s moves re: bullpen

OMG, this is unreal.

There’s my point. Worth or Ramon just may have made that play on the foul pop by Moose.
Now we’re in a bit of a mess.

I thought so, too, Dan.

You have to put your best players on the field.

i see what you are saying. if we’re in the playoffs i agree. right now, i don’t care about this game as much as i care about miggy getting back on track. we all know he can carry the offense for weeks at a time when he gets on track. get him on track -> number 1 priority.

…with that said with a 3 run lead maybe a defensive replacement was justified

Since we really don’t know how serious his injury is, we don’t know if or when he will get back on track. If you can’t run, hit or field, you need to sit down.

shut him down eh!? :p

Nice job Joachin.

Player of the game: Benoit.

agreed

Cold at the park tonight. But a tiger’s win. Pen made me nervous tonight.

post game interview with Pena was nice. He’s a good interview and seems like a very smart player.

Likin’ me some Benoit as closer. Does anyone miss the dancing and excessive celebrations?
Thank you, Torii, for taking my advice.
This race for homefield between Oakland and Detroit is the tightest race of all.

I think Prince may well have been player of the game. did a very nice job with his glove as well.

Dan & Jim remarked about his improved fielding and picking the ball at 1st base.

And Davis could a good case for the MVP but Baltimore wont reach the postseason.
The batting title is almost locked. With that many AB , it is hard to win ground for Trout.

The rest might not come soon enough. The impairments we see him dealing with will be pretty darn frustrating and discouraging should they continue into the playoffs.

The playoff lineup today:
“Austin Jackson CF, Torii Hunter RF, Miguel Cabrera 3B, Prince Fielder 1B, Victor Martinez DH, Andy Dirks LF, Omar Infante 2B, Alex Avila C, Jose Iglesias SS”

The injury plagued season deserves a closer look. I doubt he can play another season at 3B.The window could close one year too early.
There is one 1B too may in the roster. The DH/1B sharing plan Henning has proposed wont cut for Miguel.

By DRS and UZR/150 , Fielder is the worst 1B in MLB. The gap is huge between him and the one before him.
DRS -11 Smoak -6. Leader, Rizzo 15.
UZR/150 -4.8 Smoak -1.9 Leader:Napoli 12.1
