Sunday’s lineups: Tigers at Royals

Jose Iglesias returns to the Detroit lineup after missing the last two nights with shin splints. Meanwhile, Andy Dirks and Alex Avila get starts against lefty Bruce Chen, who’s giving just a .265 average to left-handed hitters compared to .214 from right-handed batters.

Fielder , will be DH or play 1B? @tigers has him as 1b but Schmehl is reporting him as DH

Sorry for that. i did not expect the photo to be in full.

Sorry I don’t think it matters ……..they won’t do anything in the 9th.

Here’s hoping they get to the Chen-ster early! Like Rich has stated a couple of times this weekend, it doesn’t matter if you win 16-2 or 4-3! At the end of the day and the season a “W” is a “W”, ugly or close. I wish we could see some better execution of offense starting today.

Avila is just 1 for 8 vs Chen no matter how hard is him on RH. Pena 1 for 3

crafty lefty with reverse splits. eat ’em up boys.

we need a win after last night – all or nothing this series? I prefer all.

7 whole pitches Chen threw….way to make him work. Excellent at bats.

99 degrees in Kansas. Hope it’s not headed this way but am afraid it is. Nice and cool here in MI. Go Tigers!!!!!

17 pitches through 2 innings way to work the count. 99* and I’m sure Chen has broken a sweat.

Look at that. Good play by Fister and Avila.

2 days in s row they throw someone out?

yup. Cy Chen is getting out Tigers in a hurry.

Avila not to be one upped by Pena!

GONE by “little fire.”

Oh, his legs are hurting.

No way Jose! Dude can’t even run.

Iggy looks like Gibby rounding the bases! Just needed the fist pump.

Oh, crap. 2 on and no outs.

Here we go,……..Here comes KC

Chen’s got out number, doesn’t he?

Sometimes……we don’ often do well against touchy feely pitchers especially lefties. And don’t even get me going on the strike zone which is jumping around.

This game is too close.

Tiger trivia: Bert Campaneris

Here come the Indians.

And, the Royals.

Two outs a a freaking three run homer! Another great day of tigers pitching. What a joke!

Meanwhile Cy Chen has been made to work real hard 51 pitches through five innings.

Torii Hunter .154 month of September…ever since he got that walk off he’s sucked. Nice base running by Austin??? Dumb!

Honestly ….. I’m so frustrated by these guys over the last several weeks. Would certianly be nice to start to see them play better baseball again. Pitching hasn’t been there, hitting is at best inconsistent. Not a recipe for success.

Torii is 38 YO. His avg in 2012 was fueled by an unusually high Babip. His babip is going down to his career norm and so is his avg
Jackson?he lack fundamentals running. They lost the money used to pay the running coach

He’s not putting the ball in play hes striking out whiffing at balls out of the strike zone…

late calling the bullpen , again.

Of course.

1.1 IP since coming back. Already allowed 1 IR to score

1 of 3

I’ve given up on Phil myself but that wasn’t a bad pitch it was up and in and if they weren’t playing in I think they make that play. It was bad luck.

Tigers look like they are disinterested…not grinding out th at bats today, pitching over te last few weeks has been very spotty more avg/bad than good.

I’m probably panicking but all I can think about is how in 2009 we had a greater lead at this point in the season and actually had a winning September but still managed to cough it up. Well this year we are not playing well right now and have less of a lead than then.

another wasted game….bad base-running by AJ, Torii has quit hitting, Miggy not himself, Prince watches 3 strikes go by, V-Mart not hitting, Fister a bad game after a shutout of the Red Sox, why Coke again? Smtly gathering dust and they wonder why he is not as effective?

Don’t say I didn’t warn ‘ya. We’ve been down this road before.

Even the Lions getting 3 touchdowns reversed weren’t as disappointing as these bums the last few weeks.

The Tigers lost the division in ’06 because they couldn’t beat the Royals at home. I’ll never forget it.

Especially nice the first 16 games of the season we’d only lost one of the games till then, then lst the last 3. We actually had their number that year of course until the last series of the year. It was unbelievable. To me 2009 was crushing because we didn’t even make it into the playoffs after leading the division most of the summer and having a 7 game lead at this point in the season. Folks we have less of a lead right now and Cleveland is winning right now and we are not playing well. This division isn’t close to being done and anyone who thinks so it dillusional,.

Well at least Cleveland lost I guess?

Wow, you lose the series at KC after winning the opener in impressive style. This is feeling like a huge letdown as almost everyone is struggling more often than not over the previous 25-30 games. IF they make the playoffs, which team shows up?
Fister is prone to the “Big” inning that defeats us, Porcello is not good for more than 2X thru the lineup, JV, well enough said on this board about him. That leaves Sanchez and Max to finish out the home stretch?? .400 ball wont cut it to the wire, there are too many hungry teams in the AL that want to win! These guys look listless some days.

We lost another series. On to Chicago. Let’s beat the Hawk Sox. Go Tigers!!!

Ever notice how when they list the opposing starters in an upcoming series it doesn’t seem to matter?
Tigers outscored ’em 21-11 and lost two of three. Best offense in baseball, baby!
Cleveland’s schedule is so ridiculously easy they could very conceivably pull off a 2009 Twins-like run.
Phil Coke? What happened to our effective relievers? On vacation?
Best offense in baseball, baby!
The good news is the magic number dropped to 15 and I no longer watch NFL football.
Best offense in base…………….never mind.

Goes back to the off season. DD is as much a part of this team as any of the 25 man roster. he failed to acquire a prominent relief pitcher and that has impacted the young Drew Smyly as well. the bullpen will be the death of the Tigers this year.
On playing Iggy.
All I can say about playing Iggy. It’s almost as stupid as playing Miggy.
It is crunch time but you need to make your bench contribute until the stars are physically ready to return.
It is pretty simple really.

“Has Fielder had a great RBI season? According to Baseball-Reference, the average major leaguer drives in 65 runs in 622 plate appearances, so Fielder is +30. Sounds good. But … he’s also had 98 more runners on base than the average hitter. ”

you find how often a runner is on base – i tell you how many of those 30 are due to the excess in runners on base :p

It’s all about clutch hitting. The big hit at the right time. The hit that lifts your team-mates.That changes a game. That deflates the opposition.
I harken back to a very telling stat.
Prince Fielder has hit ONE grand slam in 5,500 plate appearances over 9 years.

clutch hitting? Donny Kelly Baby!

There is another game in town come October:
The Arizona Fall league. We can watch or follow Tiger prospects like Cory Knebel, Devon Travis and Tyler Collins with the Mesa Solar Sox.
Knebel is MLB ready now in many experts opinion. Travis will be soon.
Collins has a few things to work on.

The Tigers have averaged close to five runs a games for most of the season. We have scored exactly five runs ten times. We have scored less than five in sixty-eight games, if I counted it right. Is pitching a little better this season?? Yes, it is. We have suffered through nine shutout losses this year but in four of those games the score was 0-0 going to the ninth inning. Is it frustrating or just baseball?? Prince Fielder is fifth in the league in ribbys while having an off season. You all know that two hundred players in the AL would love to have his numbers.

*yawn* show me a normalized RBI stat which accounts for opportunities/men on base/etc…

Prince has to step up and fill in for Miggy. He’s not. Stats be damned.

.222 September batting average for Miguel Cabrera won’t stick

Lot of people who need to step ip non more important to me than the pitching staff and its important for Torii to get on base at least a little, he can do it.

Fielder: PA: 631 RBI: 97 Actual Runners on Base: 481
ML Avg. Player with PA: 631 RBI: 66 Avg. Runners on Base: 377
Fielder wRC plus:121 .50th
OPS 808 . Among 1b, 11th
Among Tigers still below Peralta and Infante
Re Hunter. He is regressing to his career numbers. 280/335/800 is what you can expect from him. Above that,it is a bonus
Currently: 298/332/792. Last year , he was way too lucky.

So what i see is .201% (prince 97/481) vs .175% (mlb avg player 66/377)……so at least he isn’t below average

Just a thought, maybe JL moves Iggy up into the 2-hole and bump Hunter down to the 6 or even the 7 slot. We need to manufacture (term unknown to Leyland) runs early. Maybe even Iggy in the leadoff slot and AJax in the 2-hole?

Iggy can barely run. I don’t even know if he’ll play.

he didn’t look good yesterday? i didn’t get to see the game had to listen to it…

to be fair – i don’t NEED us to play great ball right now. I need to win the AL central, need to figure out who is legit and who isn’t (e.g. bullpen pieces) and hopefully get hot in about a month.
We have the starting pitching to support a weak bullpen and a slightly above average offense. Particularly in the postseason.

there will be a lot of focus tonight on Chris Sale, and rightfully so. But when they mention him i was you to remember this: CHISOX are batting .221 with a .592OPS in the month of september this year.

we’re batting .291 and .753, respectively in september.

As noted here, Iggy looked like Kirk Gibson running out his homer yesterday.
Re Torii, it could just be the normal ups and downs of hitting, or he could be wearing down here late in the season. Three more hot nights in Chicago before the weather breaks.
And yeah, one good week by the team puts this thing in the bag.

No Miggy again tonight.

I received bad info on that lineup. I won’t name names, but her initials are Shannon Hogan.

The same Shannon Hogan that told John Keating his lyrics to Sweet Caroline were wrong and hers were right? Sweet Caroline…Whoa, whoa, whoa. but Shannon says it’s Sweet Caroline..bop, bop, bop, bob, ……. and she insisted she was right,

If anyone is still reading this thread, they’re both right. Depends on which fans are doing the singing. (have no idea where that bop bop stuff comes from)

Shannon Hoagie Sandwhich? To be honest with you, FSN “reporters” are some of the most biased, unknowledgable and borderline annoying people i’ve ever seen on TV. Craig, Rod and Mario are OK but still drunk on the Kool-aid.
