Friday’s lineups: Tigers at Royals

Miguel Cabrera returns to the Tigers lineup tonight, apparently feeling better after two days to rest up. That’s the good news for Detroit. The bad news is that Jose Iglesias is out of the lineup, reportedly still limited by shin splints. Ramon Santiago will bat ninth and play short.

TIGERS (career numbers against James Shields)

  1. Austin Jackson, CF (7-for-22, 3 walks, 6 K’s)

  4. Prince Fielder, 1B (5-for-17, 2 walks)
  5. Victor Martinez, DH (9-for-31, 8 K’s)
  6. Andy Dirks, LF (2-for-8, HR, walk, K)

  7. David Lough, RF (0-for-1, walk)
  8. Jarrod Dyson, CF (1-for-10, 3 K’s)
  9. Alcides Escobar, SS (3-for-13, 3 K’s)

P: James Shields

2 out of 3 ain’t bad Eltigre. Maybe Alex is behind the dish because his arm is ‘stronger’…..what is he throwing people out at a 20% clip, yet?

16%.Peña still at 24%

Avila 8 SB /1 CS ( Fister was pitching) vs Kansas.Peña 9-1 ( Coke was pitching)

to be fair tho its not jus leyland. rod, mario, dan and jimmy price would all tell you “alex HAS to be behind the plate for the majority of the time because of his impact on the pitching game”.
but as has previously been mentioned – the stats just don’t back that notion up.

they’d probably mention his arm is better too.
but the stats don’t back that thought up EITHER

KC has been a real pain for the Tigers. They need to bear down and win a couple at least.

Avila and Santiago at bottom of lineup? If I am the manager and I have to paly Ramon then I definitely have Pena going to help compensate. Not sure if Leyland has noticed but Pena is hitting 100 points higher than Avila.

BUT it feels like 200 pts tho

That’s because it’s very close to the truth. Brayan hits over .350 against the AL Central while Alex may match Raburn circa 2012. Yes about .170 against those same foes. Alex has hit some clutch homers this year. Game winners.

It’s kinda like the starting QB for a big University is the son of the vice-president.

with that said, do you believe the front office goes out and gets a legit catcher for next year?

Besides Brian McCann and AJ , the FA class is not that good. And BC is the the younger. The rest are mostly backups or not that good in defense.
So unless, they go with James McCann, Avila will be there another year. Holaday, supposedly, is seen as a backup not a regular
A team that traded 2 catchers lately. (Added two but one is used as DH)

Don’t give up on Avila yet. hE looked for a bit like he was swinging better. and he won 2games with homers–if I remember right.

“That’s why Castellanos is playing (Saturday), to be honest with you,” Leyland said. “I’m not going to lie to you, Tuiasosopo has been struggling.”

The organization needs to develop a progression of catchers within the farm system. In the meantime, nepotism or not, let’s look via FA for a solid catcher!!!!
I only wish VMart could catch 80+ games, that would solve quite a few problems!
In case he is unable to be that solution in 2014 and beyond, let’s look for a solid candidate to manage our staff, hold runners and hit for average (.280+) with gap power!

270 post ASG but 222 last 10 games.
His OBP for the season. 294.
5 E ( 3 on throws). only 4 C have more than him in the AL
FP 987
9 PB 4th in the AL
29 WP for the staff( with this staff..) 9th
59 SB, 4th.

ugly numbers ElTigre, real ugly.

Not commenting on Victors ability to catch and call a game but if anyone thinks he’s going to help control the running game, well my memory is that he wasn’t good at it and I was right….his career average is 23%.
2002 – 15%
2003 – 31%
2004 -25%
2005 – 23%
2006 – 18%
2007 -32%
2008 -37%
2009 -14%
2013 -0%

I don’t think Holiday, McCann or anyone else in the organization is the answer like (Bill Freehan or Lance Parrish) were for a long term catcher foundation. I believe Brantley was the closest catcher to being our L-Term solution though. We need to acquire a solid backup for 2014! This position has been a weakness for quite a few years now.

OK, Shields had a 10 pitch 1st inning on a Miggy whiff at a weak change up and a Prince weak groundout! Come on Sanchez, let’s command the strike zone tonight!!

Yep our hitters were terrific.???

Nice pay at home.

His mask just flew off.

So much for that inning saving play at home when you continue to to let hitters waltz to second. I’m tired of this really tired.

and here we go again….a stolen base results in a run….that may be all Shields needs

No respect for speed. Big mistake.

Apologies for the sour tone, typical Tigers start opposition gets a single, stolen base and single = run scored and behind again in the 1st inning!! DD & JL, can’t we find a leadoff hitter that can get on base and manufacture a run to start a game? It’s amazing what a lead can do for a Pitchers mental outlook.

We must thanks small ball for being only one down.

Nice Ab’s by Dirks and Avila…it’s a new game.

Good good!

Austin looks hurt.

Santiago and a good hit with RISP for AJ!

Hey hey, Santiago runs thru Brookens stop sign to score easily (4-1)!! Brookens, you need to learn your players speed & capabilities!

Brookens…………the train has left the station

Wow….nice 5 run inning Sanchez needs to be himself and the tigers need to keep their foot on the gas.

Chris Davis hit another homer…that ship is sailing I think as far as another triple crown

GK, yes but if Tigs make the playoffs and Miggy is healthy…….Mr. I does not care who does what individually!! Mr I still makes the payroll regardless of the seed or individual stats!

Miggy’s OBP with 2 out RISP .597

So Avila did not like our discussion here?

Wow! Tigers are living right against Shields tonight!!!! Alot of bloop singles in 2+ innings! Brookens you are a fool!!!!! You just got Dirks picked off 3rd!!!!

Im curious how is that Brookens fault?

Is that what Jim’s gonna say in the post-game interview?

he won’t be so polite

Please FIRE BROOKENS SOON!!! He is NOT qualified!!

Bases loaded, no outs. Nothing.

Getting picked off of 3rd…gotta be kidding me..I’ve never seen that ever. Big freaking bonehead mistake bases loaded nobody out to nothing. Coulda been a nail in the coffin but no.

andy used to be the kinda guy who wouldn’t make that mistake.

GK, 3rd base coach has to communicate to the runner with less than 2 outs!! He’s not qualified for that position!

You did see it before. 1987. Playoff.

Evans was picked off by the catcher.

At 3B.

Darrell Wayne Evans! Nice name!

Tiger triva: Quintin Berry

Jay I’m not saying I disagree or agree, I just don’t know I’d like to hear n explanation that’s one sure.

who was it that posted they expected an offensive rebound tonight? oh yeah, me.

The game is not over yet. Still plenty of time to tack on 10 or more runs.

take on runs? check! 13 1

“one run may be all Shields needs” Don’t you love it when I’m wrong? 13 down, 7 to go. First team in baseball history to lose 20-4 and win the next game 20-1. LOL

100 pitches and done or 7 innings no matter what?

Wow just got home, what a game. Looks like Omar is having quite a game.

dirks has been good too – amongst other good showing.
Anyone watch on TV tonight? Hows Cabby looking – fresh, hurt?

he’s not wincing.

Da-da-da-Diiiirks! 5-5 wow i forgive u know for the pickoff

ok im gunna break my silence on the issue: drew is busted huh? chances are slim he’s a playoff piece, now, or what?

Why have Smyly in a 16-1 game? And he’s actually sucking it up?

to see if he can figure it out prolly yea? and he didn’t….well he kinda did but not really. looks bad.

Not his fault Jim can’t handle a bullpen.

Smyly has been badly misused. Pitching once every 7 days
There are two wild cards so it not that they can dump everyone of the postseason roster.
For all the talk about Coke in the last postseason. it was Smyly who won that game against the Yankees.

His ERA remains at 2.39

I think Smyly has been rusting in the bullpen. Now can the Tigers hit half this well tomorrow. Can Verlander please pitch a decent game?

I think Smyly is discouraged.
the control of a running game cannot be blown off with excuses, All of a sudden the 5 starting pitchers (who have been around for a few years folks) are totally to blame .Has every ONE of them changed their deliveries? (Pitchers are not inclined to change things much).
Are they to blame? yes, but not totally. You have to be an idiot to think that our catchers are blameless.

It’s both. Always is. Pena has a hitch in his throw and Avila has been rushed and off target.

I didn’t see Smyly pitch because I was busy watching that rocket to the moon fly by. That was pretty cool. Didn’t have to go to Florida to see it either.
I don’t think Jim has any plans to use Smyly tomorrow, but I agree it’s been puzzling how Drew has been used in the second half.
A lot of offensive stats were padded tonight, but it’s still one win. And one more game shaved off the magic number. No thrills and chills tonight for a change.

How can Mike Trout lead Miggy in offensive war when Miggy leads him in almost every real offensive category?

Red Sox have scored 41 runs in their last 3 games! Lets just hope they’re getting this out of their system before the playoffs.

s’what i said about the dodgers a month ago

1.91. Pre-allstar
4.08 post -allstar

Smylys number ….he just hast been reliable so why would Leyland use him in a key situation?

I would venture to say that he’s not getting enough steady work. A glance at his days of rest numbers demonstrate that he gets very bad very fast when it’s been more than 3 days.
I thought Drew was at his best when handed the ball and told to go as long as he can (Wednesday night in Boston may have been a good time for that) but Jim likes to match up L-R. The more relievers you use, the more likely you’ll find the guy that doesn’t have it on a given night.
In the end, how many relievers do we have that you CAN say is reliable? One or two?

But look at this: he allowed no runs in July in 12 innings.
He allowed 5 in august in just 8 innings. The first after 6 days of rest .2 vs Oakland without making an out after 5 days of rest.
And one in september after 5 more days of rest.
He has been allowed to rust after probably being overused in meaningless games early in the season.
If his ERA caused the rest, why is not the same with Coke and Al2?
He has allowed 3 of 19 IR to score , the whole year.He deserves better.
Smyly is the 5th best reliever in the AL by RE24, runs saved, behind Uehara, Hochevar, Holland and Cotts. And above Benoit. With 16.20. (Mariano Rivera : 9.37)But he has been used mostly in low leverage situations

Rich, I think the answer is three: Smyly, Benoit and Rondon.

Okay. Veras isn’t too bad, usually gets it done in the end. We’ve just been seeing the wrong guys lately. How about this? Everytime Jim wants Alburquerque, he uses Smyly instead. I can’t even imagine Al coming into a tight postseason game.

I was mocking Veras during his second to last game but true, he has been good most of the time. But why is he used so little?JL said he was not used that much with Houston. If that is true why did they give their 4th prospect for him?
And Albuquerque in postseason? neither I

Dirks went 5 for 5 , sits today:
Austin Jackson CF, Torii Hunter RF, Miguel Cabrera 3B, Prince Fielder 1B, Victor Martinez DH, Omar Infante 2B, Nick Castellanos LF, Brayan Pena C, Ramon Santiago SS.
Iglesias still out. Washburn?

Let’s hope not!
