Wednesday’s lineups: Tigers at Red Sox

Boston 004

Not much information on Miguel Cabrera, but suffice to say something acted up in his groin/abdominal injury.

“Sore today. That’s all I can tell you,” Leyland said. “I can’t tell you when he’s gonna play.”

Just like the last time Cabrera sat, Prince Fielder and Victor Martinez move up in the lineup in his absence. Don Kelly gets the start at third base.

The Tabbies don’t have a whole lot of history against Ryan Dempster, given most of his career took place in the National League. Still, Fielder has some success against him, and Hunter has hit him well in limited at-bats.

The Red Sox regain the services of Jacoby Ellsbury just in time to get him back in the lineup against Rick Porcello, who has retired him only once in eight tries.

TIGERS (career numbers off Ryan Dempster)

  1. Austin Jackson, CF
  2. Torii Hunter, RF (6-for-9, K)
  3. Prince Fielder, 1B (11-for-43, 3 HR, 8 walks)
  4. Victor Martinez, DH (2-for-4)
  5. Andy Dirks, LF
  6. Don Kelly, 3B (
  7. Omar Infante, 2B (3-for-13, HR, 2 K’s)
  8. Alex Avila, C
  9. Jose Iglesias, SS

P: Rick Porcello

RED SOX (career numbers off Porcello)

  1. Jacoby Ellsbury, CF (6-for-7, HR, walk)
  2. Shane Victorino, RF
  3. Dustin Pedroia, 2B (2-for-8, walk, K)
  4. David Ortiz, DH (1-for-4, K)
  5. Daniel Nava, LF
  6. Mike Napoli, 1B (4-for-13, walk, 5 K’s)
  7. Stephen Drew, SS (0-for-3)
  8. David Ross, C
  9. Will Middlebrooks, 3B (1-for-3)

P: Ryan Dempster

Oh Miggy????

Looks like Oakland is up to it again. Sorry I still think they are up to something….thought it when it was happening and I’m nearly convinced.

Yep Oakland…just hitting a little too well…..

Against the shift, someone like Fielder must slug his way through not that way. The player against who the shift was created used to hit over it in that park

Good catch by Andy, there.

As the numbers say, he is top 3 among defensive LF in MLB

Who are the top 2? Curious.

Marte and Gordon by DRS. Marte and Murphy by UZR/150

Kelly: 205 since the ASG.
166 last 10.
Time to play Santiago

I don’t care who it is I just want somebody anybody who can hit a ball. Again sorry Dempster isn’t this good.

Kelly for sure is not the answer

Pretty bad pitch, BP pitch. Breaking ball with no movement over home plate

Time for Porcello to get the ball down everything they hit that inning was up and hit hard. The only thing you got is the ground ball so if you don’t keep it down you haven’t got a chance especially in a park like this. Get it together.

Nice inning boys!

Again, pretty bad pitch, BP pitch. Breaking ball with no movement over home plate

A Boston batter like AB for the former Bo Sox.

Well it’s a new game….another cheap homer the third one of the night.

Ya they stand on top of the plate and don’t try to get out of the way.

Avila needs to contribute

Iggy has a bad wheel. Limping after beating out the DP.

i noticed it too. But it is not the first time. he was rested for the same, two weeks ago?

He got spiked in his big toe a few weeks ago on a play at 2nd base.

Well again another pitch right in the wheelhouse….jeez Ricky get your fricking act together. Need to change your plan, this one isnt working.

Torii’s pace has slowed down significantly since his walk off homer. Just saying.

Yup, he’s cooled off a bit. But, he’ll get it going again.

Down and in to the happy zone?

Hope it’s not his heel.

Dan & Jim just said Coco Crisp just hit another HR. Hmmmmm.

This time is not the pitcher´s fault. The throw was bad

worse than not throwing Victorino out you throw it aw away. Excellent.

Dirks with a great catch anyway.

Throwing error huge…gotta love it Avila cant throw or catch or hit tonight.

Iglesias left the game with bilateral shin splints and is day-to-day.

Avila is slipping again, fast. He is a strikeout waiting to happen.
Earlier comment re Kelly at 3rd is well taken. He shouldn’t be there at this time. Try Hernan, shake it up, get some speed in the lineup.

Dempster out smarting our hitters now.

Doesn’t it seem like for the last few weeks its just been a struggle every single game…….

Avila can’t hit the ball and can’t take a 3-1 pitch in the dirt. He should not be playing right now either. \I’ts actually pretty obvious if you are paying attention.
Play Pena and Holaday against the odd southpaw.
Frustrating game.

Day-off tomorrow and a full team of relievers, and he is still there.

Time to get Porcello out talk about not giving your team a chance to win……and if your hitters are going to sit on their thumbs for the most part all series this is what you get. Stupid freaking Fenway completely jinxed there.

Porcello is completely finished. Only Jim Leyland believes otherwise.

3 batters late

2 batters too late he had gotten Napoli out 3 times tonight but after you didnt get him grab him.

Pitches werent even close……what a disappointing performance from him.

4 HR of the season. I still think Putkonen would be a better option in the postseason roster than Al2

Turning the channel. I’ll keep my eyes peeled but they’ve wasted my time. Freaking joke.

Hey Jim, AA bites. When are you going to get that into your stubborn head?

Wrong side of history. 2000

Actually not even going to keep my eyes peeled plain and simple the pitching stunk.

I expected them to lose the season series 1-6 and they will end 4-3 vs Boston but still this is no way to lose a game.

Santiago hustling like in a close game.

We were due for (and very capable of) a real stinker. We have not been playing good ball lately. Bound to happen.
AlAl has done his team a favour. It is now abundantly clear that he is not MLB material at this time and certainly not post-season worthy. Bondo the same.
I’ve been saying for a long time, the bullpen is the achilles heel of this team. The injuries we will get over. The lack of team speed and absence of a counter measure to others that do have it, can be compensated for. But not a bullpen.
There is no silk purse for that sow’s ear.

I agree but this is completely on Porcello. He was useless tonight

On national TV.

8 homers in a game I hope this staff is good and embarrassed.

Quintin Berry’s revenge.

New team record you don’t want o get most homers allowed in a single game.

Woke up this morning thinking last night was a bad dream…..alas no it wasn’t.

I heard some of the game and missed the grand slam, got home and saw the 8th inning score and thought at least I did not watch it – yikes, what a game. Seems we tend to tank a lot when on national tv don’t we? We may have been due but hate when we are on the receiving end of one of those.

One (or two) player(s) can be replaced in the playoff roster. Hope and dream (delusion and denial) with Coke, Alburquerque( he has been in problems for a while but still he was there by August 31) and 2E. But no signals of any of them to be replaced. Downs was not even recalled, Castellanos has not been tested yet and they picked Al2 over Putkonen ( and Reed) already.

“Jose Iglesias said his shins have bothered him throughout the entire 2013 season.” I noticed it before. Last night was not the first time he looked like something was bothering him while running but he kept playing in those games.

wow that was a rough game. like a nightmare!

Shin splints can be remedied by rest. But, if they keep ignoring the pain, it might result in a more severe injury. Please, don’t ruin this guy.

We need to get a little more distance between us and the Tribe. Then rest some of the walking wounded. One bright spot last night was seeing Fielder pull a ball for a home run. (Maybe the Yankees will notice!!!)
Kelly, 2E and Avila should not be getting a lot of playing time right now.

Bright side (?) is that, other than Rondon and Veras on Monday, Boston didn’t see any of our good relievers, so we can surprise them in the postseason………no? Okay.
I was sorry to see that record of 7 homers given up go. I was at that game on July 17 1966 when Cleveland did that. 15-2, Northrup had one homer for Detroit. Sparma started. It was two days after the big Earl Wilson PH walkoff against Baltimore. I was at both games. It was the best of times, the worst of……….blah blah.

Not to raise any alarm, but the Tigers playoff partners could very likely be Boston, Oakland, and Texas.

That was a brutal loss, however bye to Boston and hello KC. I’m not going to give much worry to the postseason and those teams until we are in the postseason and playing those teams. As my sister-in-law would say “don’t paint the devil on the wall”.

11,522 “screaming featherheads” (Harry Doyle) shoehorned into Progressive Field last night to witness a game with postseason implications.

Maybe their fans are as annoyed with that drum as I am🙂

It’s really hard not getting concerned about last nights spanking. No team in all of baseball has given up that many runs to a team all season. Especially as Rich says this is a team we have trouble with on their own turf. We have problems with Texas and Oakland as well. How stupid was I thinking after the first two games we were going to avoid the Fenway circus.

Come on GK, you’ve been worried and concerned every game. I appreciate your love of the game but I can’t count how many times you’ve posted “I’m officially worried” 🙂
By the way, I’m just ribbing you.

We better win the division or I will have a total meltdown. That needs to be the main focus. To hell with individual awards. I’d rather win a World Series all 365 days of the year.

The way this team plays on the “National Stage” is a concern.

Is Avila using the new mask? I can be wrong but my impression was that he raised his body and left the mitt down to block the ball when he was hit in the neck below the mask.He did not see the ball or was not aware where the ball was going.

I didn’t pay attention last night, but he had been wearing it. The bars are noticeably thicker.
I’m afraid the best catcher on the team might be the DH.
Cabrera might tweak his injuries less if he was the DH.

Ortiz supposedly tested positive in 2003. Why is Dempster playing alongside him?He is a cheater but is our cheater?
Cruz will play with Texas.
Colon is the MVP for the A´s
So, at least three teams will have PED related players with them. No problem with Jhonny. He can replace 2E.

In regards to an earlier post, maybe from Dan, I would have no problem bringing Jhonny back for the postseason. Granted I love Iggy, but I agree with El Tigre, Jhonny can replace 2E or another under performer.

not in the field. Against Boston in game 1, we won with defense.

and a good pitching performances.

Here we go again, folks, just assuming we will be in the post-season. We’ve seen it slip away before,

Sara……. tigers traditionally play poorly when they play in Fenway or in Texas. I think those places freak out the pitchers. So yes if we play either of these teams without home field advantage yes it doesn’t bode well.

You know if Miggy isn’t healthy they could play Jhonny at 3rd base and let Miggy DH. Just thinking out loud.

With VMart behind the plate.

My take on Jhonny is that I don’t think the club should ask him back. But that’s me.
I always have like the guy but I think this is an issue that supercedes his personality and his playing ability.

Douglas with Erie:

Douglas sending the rival catcher to DL

Wow, I like old school baseball but that was pretty rough there. Not sure that should be legal these days.

that was intense for sure. Isn’t Jim Price the Union rep for the catchers union?

According to the blog at
“Both managers echoed that the collision was a clean baseball play”

It is a clean play by the rules, but perhaps those should be changed. I know they’ve talked about it. How about ruling out shoulder first slides at home? Cross blocks okay, feet first okay. That guy looked like he got hit by a car.
This isn’t the 1930s when scoring the run meant food on your family’s table.

Holy cow! Douglas might have a job as a free safety if baseball doesn’t work out.
That’s hard-nosed but I would have liked to have at least see him check on the catcher.

I have mentioned before that I watched Ray Fosse here trying to recover his career and how it fueled my antipathy for Rose. I agree that was excessive and should be illegal

Anybody else here a bit concerned over the management of Miggy’s injury(ies)?
I hope they are not trying to get the best of both worlds by playing him every now and then. He just seems to keep tweaking himself. With 22 games left they should be able to make the post-season. If you have to play him and they feel compelled to keep playing Prince, they have to play him as a DH. That means the 4th catcher will have to move behind the plate. VMart may not be as nimble as Brad Ausmus or Jason Kendall but he gives you everything, likes a challenge, and seems to have recovered pretty well from the wratched knee,
Putting Miggy at 3rd is not a prudent decision at this point. Putting him at 1st is only slightly better and won’t happen anyway.

Exactly. I said that up a few posts.

DD better keep an eye on the waiver wire for that bullpen. Last I saw Erika Bedard was available as was Mike Zagurski.
I am not a big fan of Darrin Downs but I did think he would be given another go.

If Wednesday’s game had been a postseason game, I wonder if Jim would have pulled Porcello earlier and brought in Smyly to go as long as he could? That was a “remedy for success” (Rod-ism) earlier this season. Short term solution but the playoffs are short term.

With a day off and a rested bullpen, there was no reason to leave Porcello past Napoli ( as GK pointed , he made him out twice before the near HR).
But Albuquerque was not even warming at that point. With Porcello´s track record, someone had to be warming.

I think everyone saw that but ol’ Jim. Ever have that moment when, although the game is still in the balance, you feel it draining away and begin to mentally check out? That was watching Porcello pitch his final inning. I guess Rick gets 100 pitches no matter how well or how badly he’s pitching.
My point above is that Jim manages with more urgency in the postseason, and sometimes that urgency is needed during certain regular season games. It was also a suggestion of what to do with Smyly right now.

Focus on Kansas City who have won seven of their last ten. They are our next challenge. We need to win this series. Go Tigers!!!!!

Okay, I’m focused on Kansas City. Now what?

Wow going up against Shields who is pitching well (2-0//1.69 era) in his last 3 starts.
I saw Salvy Perez took another foul ball to the neck/chin so he may be out. KC is expecting a sellout tonight! Kaufmann will be rockin so Tig’s need to score early and keep Sanchez ahead! Hope everyone brings their “A” game tonight!
I believe tomorrow is Duffy vs. Verlander and Sunday Chen vs. Max?
Go TIG’s!

Tough pitchers are hard on Tiger outcomes. You get a stingy pitcher on the mound and you have to find other ways of winning than bashing the baseball. Not an easy task for a station to station offense. Won’t see that with the Royals, they get a walk or an HBP and they will be off and running.
We have to find a way to impact the other guys’ running game. It’s a joke right now.

Tough match ups this weekend. Runs will be at a premium hopefully not for us though. Go Tigers. Although I think KC while not technically out of it they could make it hard on us.

True. KC been playing pretty good ball lately and are only a game and a half behind Cleveland. Plus, they have guys that really like Tiger pitching.

Correct me if I’m wrong but I believe it is Fister vs Chen on Sunday not Max.

The numbers against Shileds are pretty good:
Austin: 318/855
Victor: 290/645
Andy. 250 but 1083
Ramon: 280/628
Brayan 385/862 while Avila is 222/708
Kelly, 2E and Infante 167 each.
If JL uses the numbers, Ramon at 2B and Brayan as catcher .With Andy at LF.

Salvi Perez will play

If you’re a Tigers fan, you’ll want to read this. Peter Gammons:

Miguel playing tonight

Lineup: Jackson 8, Hunter 9, Cabrera 5, Fielder 3, Martinez DH, Dirks 7, Avila 2, Infante 4, Santiago 6. Sanchez is starting.

No Iglesias:
“Iglesias said he initially hurt his shins “running in the sand” during the offseason. They’ve bothered him ever since”

Nice article by Gammons.

I was at the 20-4 game. These things happen — no need to take it too seriously. In the postseason, Porcello’s role will be long relief. And Putkonen may take the last pitching spot over Al Al and Bonderman. My main concern is not the lopsided loss but Iglesias (and of course Cabrera). Having them healthy and tuned for the postseason is important. The other teams in the postseason are strong — there should be a lot of good baseball.
