Tuesday’s lineups: Tigers (with Cabrera) at Red Sox

Fenway sign 002

Miguel Cabrera worked out and ran before batting practice today and cleared every test he had. As a result, he’s back in the Tigers lineup in his usual spot, playing third base and hitting against Red Sox lefty Jon Lester.

Jacoby Ellsbury, meanwhile, is not in the Red Sox lineup, despite a 5-for-9 career mark against Scherzer. He has soreness in his hand after jamming his thumb a couple days ago. His absence leaves David Ortiz as the one guy in the BoSox lineup who has consistently hit Scherzer in his career, though two home runs make Dustin Pedroia somebody to keep an eye on.

TIGERS (career numbers off Lester)

  1. Austin Jackson, CF (2-for-10, walk, K)
  2. Torii Hunter, RF (13-for-56, 2 HR, 3 walks, 11 K’s)
  3. Miguel Cabrera, 3B (4-for-12, HR, walk, 3 K’s)
  4. Prince Fielder, 1B (4-for-9)
  5. Victor Martinez, DH (11-for-29, 4 walks, 3 K’s)
  6. Omar Infante, 2B (3-for-14, walk, 6 K’s)
  7. Matt Tuiasosopo, LF (0-for-2, walk, 2 K’s)
  8. Brayan Pena, C (6-for-14, 2 K’s)
  9. Jose Iglesias, SS (1-for-3)

P: Max Scherzer

RED SOX (career numbers off Scherzer)

  1. Shane Victorino, CF (10-for-43, HR, 4 walks, 7 K’s)
  2. Daniel Nava, RF (1-for-6, K)
  3. Dustin Pedroia, 2B (3-for-13, 2 HR, K)
  4. David Ortiz, DH (7-for-13, 3 HR, 2 walks, 2 K’s)
  5. Mike Carp, 1B (2-for-5, walk, 3 K’s)
  6. Jonny Gomes, LF (0-for-3, 2 K’s)
  7. Stephen Drew, SS (1-for-9, 4 K’s)
  8. David Ross, C (1-for-2)
  9. Will Middlebrooks, 3B (0-for-3, 3 K’s)

P: Jon Lester

Was hoping for Castellanos in left.

Omar batting 6th. Nice.

Don’t think you will see a Castellanos start until it is completely wrapped up. May see him pinch hit. I did like having Omar hit 9th to turn over the lineup, but I guess without Peralta is makes sense. I do like this lineup.

“Leyland on people picking apart Scherzer’s season based on wins and run support: “Some people can find a flaw in Bo Derek.”
it is not about Scherzer, the debate has been on for years now.At least since 1979, when Stone won over Norris who deserved it by far. Stone, 25-7 3.23 defeated Norris 22-9 2.53 and wait for this… 24 CG,and was deeply contested.
In 1991, Clemens 18-10 with a 2.62 ERA defeated among others Gullickson with 20 W.
Greinke won the Cy Young with 16-8 but a leading 2.16 over King Felix: 19-6 and 2.49. In turn Felix won in 2010 with 13-12 and 2.27.
I think, Scherzer will win bevause his ERA and peripherals are good enough besides his W-L record. But Darvish and Sanchez deserve consideration. Felix has taken himself of the contest in the last two games. And ,if the questioning of the stat is serious, Sale must be top 5

Dang—2 days in a row of a leadoff double and Torii unable to do the job.

Lester looks like he is throwing well. Better play good ball!!!!

Oh my …Bo Derek? Too funny talk about an antiquated reference. And yes that’s what makes it so funny.
Yep wasting that lead off double was disappointing ..
And yes I’m already annoyed with this umpire especially the Fielder AB…and a few pitches he did not give to Scherzer in the Pedrioa AB.

No way Brookens should send him there. Another out he’s run them into.

That is NOT playing good ball. Pena has to score on that. He was out by a mile at home. Embarrassingly so, i thought he was rounding 3rd in plenty of time to score but I guess I better see what others have to say about Brookens on that one.

He’s not fast enough….

What is Brookens doing? The top of the lineup was coming up. That wasn’t even close. Quite bad, actually. I don’t mind if a guy is thrown out at home if it takes a perfect throw to get him. But he was out by 20 feet. Ross could have had a cup of coffee. Smarten up, Tommy.
— Bob

Highly unlikely, Bob. He’s the only person in the park that night that wasn’t aware Torii needed a triple for the cycle and he held up Avila at 3rd.

Pena should have slide, he could have made it! (…. well…. worth a laugh at least).
How bout Iglesias smoking that ball, he hits line drives like that, he will be an All Star

Miguel is not OK. I was waiting to see how he would react the first time he had to throw himself on the ground to catch a ball. He’s hurting. Why do they insist on putting him out there when it’s obvious he’s still injured?

It’s gonna bite them Kathy! I’m pretty sure of that.
yeah, Brookens shouldn’t have sent him. He has to know there are runners you DON’T send. 2E, VMart, Avila, Fielder, Miggy. They are either poor base runners or they die going around 3rd..
Fielder is one of thw worst instinctive base runners I have ever seen.

Well the hitters have to have a good game tonight for their Ace. He deserves it.
3 runs like yesterday are not very many at Fenway..

Max looking real good…..

Nice 4 pitch inning for Maxcant do much better than that. More Tiger’s runs please!

Tigers need more runs. As well as Max is pitching, I can’t see the Red Sox getting shut out 2 nights in a row.

Miguel doesn’t look in pain when he’s swinging he just looks a little off…

They won’t. Discouraging leaving the sacks loaded there.
back to base-running. I thought we hired a guy (Jeff Cox?) to help in spring with that?
We do not have intuitive base runners, other than iggy, Infante and Miggy. Dirks and Kelly are OK. Austin Jackson is not what I would consider a good base runner. Forget the steals, just base-running. Hardly ever goes 1st to 3rd and last night on a single by Torii, he couldn’t make it past 3rd. Linerl hit up the middle and he was breaking back toward 2nd base? Does he not know where the infiielders are?
This is a player who could be a great player. I hope he figures it out.

Did it pass in front of him to RF, up the middle, or in LF? Not supposed to run if it’s in front of you.

geez, I think I better read your whole post. Up the middle. Sorry about that. Yes he should have been able to make it.

Is it that they are not intuitive or they are just not fast enough? There is about three feet between left fielder and home plate.
Can’t keep squandering opportunities.

Funny how it goes. you miss an critical opportunity to score some and the other team gets some wind in their sails and comes back on ya’.

I’m not talking about tonight. I’m talking in general. We have some slugs, but one of them is a good base runner (Miggy) and we have some speed but few of them are really good base-runners.

2E still 250 last 10.

I got ripped last week for saying this, but I’m sorry it seemed the first three months of the season you couldn’t get 2E out…I don’t know what happened but he simply cannot get a hit anymore. Was he getting lucky, was he not pressing? I don’t know but what I do know he just isn’t doing it right now.

Way too many blown opportunities with RISP! Brookens you are worse than LaMont!
Come on guys, give Max some run support!

Bottom of the 6th will be a major one for Max.
If he gets through easily maybe, just maybe we can come back.
2E has not been helping much lately.

5 for 20, last 10. But too many SO. His number post ASG are more or less the same of Kelly

Tigers hitters 2 for 8 risp
7 left on base

Out pitching Lester
Out hitting Red Soxs
Just not out scoring them?

Come on guys, Lester is at 101 pitches thru 6th inn, work the counts to get to the BP! Max is at 80 thru 6th, if they can get him some runs, could go 8 inns? Come on Iggy, get er started!

Stopped grinding out their at bats…..quick and easy.

20 SO as Tiger/30 as Red Sox in twice the AB. They must work with that.

work to fix that

I know Max is kicking himself for letting the #9 hitter get him after blowing away the hitter before with 2nd & 3rd and only 1 out.
Shoulda, coulda, woulda

Yep…..Max has pitched very well tonight not so impressed with the hitters so far tonight.

Dang–lost Ross, that’s a guy he’s gotta get for an out. Max is done now.
We will be fortunate to get out of this inning.

The 1st inning bummed us out.

OK Miggy–get right back in the Triple Crown again with this at bat.
JL, under no circumstances can you let 2E bat again tonight.

Well, we’ve got 2 innings that we can still score some runs, I hope.

Come on boys show em….support Max!

1 2/3 innings now. (1 1/3 after Prince makes an easy out)

Big boys gave em quick easy outs this inning. Pretty disappointed that they let Lester off the hook all night and let down their pitcher.

ESPN:From Elias: Victor Martinez has gone a career high 71 straight PA without striking out. Over that stretch he’s batted .403.

now, 75

JL making strategic move to PR vor Victor. Unfortunately, Perez is a better runner. Faster and can steal a base.
I actually thought that is why they even bothered to call Hernan up. For situations just like this.

Typical JL, the “veteran” first

Japanese relievers. Dynamite.. Tazawa looks really good to these eyes.
I hope Max doesn’t hurt himself here. Kinda cool that JL is leaving him fly but I think it was clear last inning he was already done.

Why is him still there? With a full team of relievers?

Just can even say what a bad idea it was to leave him out there after he walked the girt guy. Jeez.

Walked the first guy.

Like I say, he was clearly done last inning. You have to accept facts and not try to invent them. Feel bad for Max-he deserved much better.

Oritz is gonna park one here off Coke.

That is an almost incredible stat El Tigre. He’s gonna have to another 50 more to beat Sewell!!!!

The third pitch looked like a strike

And he was already SO

Sure did…….Lester was getting pitches lower than that call strikes all freaking night. But whatever……right?

I’m so tired about complaining about umpires but they always seem to just be so incompetent.

And did the job.

Hate to say this but the team was doing better w/o Miggy.

Pretty poor plate discipline tonight. We are a pretty easy team to pitch to when we expand the strike zone and tonight was pretty bad. It didn’t help that they had to deal with yet another umpire and the every moving strike zone.
— Bob

How did you like how that ump change that Pena at bat? Calling that pitch a strike so Pena and the rest were forced to swing at those unhittable pitches out of the strike zone because if they didn’t that idiot would call them a strike.
Regardless Max was pretty good….tigers hitters were bad …oh yes the coud get a hit but they squandered multiple opportunities to score runs. And how big could that possible run Brookens ran us out of the inning. i know there is no guarentee it scores with the next guy but he didnt even give them a chance. People didnt like Lamont so much because they thought he was too conservatve but Brookens is horrible and reckless. He obviously doesn’t know his players very well or he arms he is dealing with in the outfield. Big boys really bad at bats tonight. And no Lester was not that good..they were that bad.

That’s 4 runs in 3 games. Does anyone have a quick stat on our MEDIAN average of runs per game? I suspect it would be shockingly low.
Other than trying to get Max his 20th, which would be idiotic, I couldn’t see why Jim sent him out there in the 8th. I saw what everyone else did; he was done after seven.
I have no idea what Brookens was thinking or if he was thinking at all. How many times do you get a guy thrown out by 30 feet? That was the first turning point because they were hitting Lester at the time with the top of the lineup coming up.
The second turning point was bases loaded for Miggy with a 2-0 count. That turning point I called at the time.
Okay, one to go.

Indians announce an attendance of 9,962 for this battle of Wild Card contenders.
9,961 without the drummer. MLB has run out of franchise worthy cities so those folks are stuck with that ballclub. Maybe a name/logo change would help.

Played bad baseball. Lost. There is direct correlation.
Umps, unless I am seriously naive, don’t make bad calls deliberately or for one side rather than the other. Doesn’t mean they are good.
We lost because we didn’t execute. Brookens, bad decision; Pena, horrible jump; Max, hanging a couple of pitches; Hunter, not getting AJ over to 3rd in the 1st; 2E lousy at bats; Prince, just SOP; Miggy; playing injured; and everyone else for swinging at everything and not working the count while they wait for Miggy to save them.
Good game, in the fact it was close and always possible but bad, in the way the team played.

1 bad pitch…. crazy game. Playoff style baseball. I agree that Miggy doesn’t look like himself.

I’d like to see how Miggy looks after he gets a game or two under his belt after that layoff. I’m not convinced he’s that badly injured after getting the days off.

Funny just now watching Jim defend Brookens, saying he would have done the same thing. If that was true, he’d be the only manager in MLB to do that same thing. He was just covering for Tom. Kudos to Keating for asking about it on the air.

I will say that even though Brookens was wrong, he should have been right. Pena has to score on a two out double to the gap. Brookens anticipated Pena to be further along than he was. Pena then became Paul Konerko after reaching 3rd to make matters worse.
