Friday’s lineups: V-Mart catching against Mets

Yup, it’s on. Victor Martinez will be behind the plate in a game for the first time since Aug. 4, 2011, a few days before he messed up his knee sliding into home plate at Kansas City. Martinez is 1-for-6 for his career against Daisuke Matsuzaka, but neither Brayan Pena nor Bryan Holaday have faced him. Moreover, Pena is still working through his right big toe injury. He said yesterday he’d be available to catch if needed, but I imagine the Tigers would rather have him ready to catch Max Scherzer tomorrow. (I’m not in NY for this series)

TIGERS (career numbers off Matsuzaka)

  1. Austin Jackson, CF (1-for-4, 2 K’s)
  2. Torii Hunter, RF (5-for-18, HR, walk, 2 K’s)
  3. Miguel Cabrera, 3B (4-for-9, HR, 2 walks)
  4. Prince Fielder, 1B (2-for-3, K)
  5. Victor Martinez, C (1-for-6, 2 walks, 2 K’s)
  6. Don Kelly, LF (0-for-3)
  7. Omar Infante, 2B (1-for-4)
  8. Jose Iglesias, SS
  9. Doug Fister, P

METS (career numbers against Fister)

  1. Eric Young, LF
  2. Daniel Murphy, 2B
  3. Marlon Byrd, RF (0-for-3)
  4. Ike Davis, 1B
  5. Wilmer Flores, 3B
  6. Juan Lagares, CF
  7. Travis d’Arnaud, C
  8. Omar Quintanilla, SS (0-for-2, K)
  9. Daisuke Matsuzaka, P

good to V-Mart, he loves being out there at 1st and deserves to catch. Even more excited for tonight’s game now! Go Tigs

Wow…..I didn’t think they’d do it.

Catch him tomorrow vs Harvey and not Matsuzaka.

I don’t know if they can have him catch all 3 games with his knees. Will there be a LHP starting for NY? Maybe put VM at 1st and sit PF for a game. I know the SOC will never do it.

God these games in national League parks make me nervous. While I find it amusing for a half a second what it comes down to I’m just not sure I think its fair. AL teams just not built to succeed in these situations. Even though the Mets are not great they do pitch well and we are going to be facing the second best pitcher in the game this year. Just makes me nervous.

Hey, we want him to catch some in that final round of the playoffs.

Part of Selig’s legacy is introducing interleague play but never addressing the DH question between the leagues. Typical. I might be willing to sacrifice Dombrowski if it would mean we had a commissioner with some sense in his head.

Wait till that last week of the year and those games in Miami and if we have to face that Hernandez? Won’t make me happy.

Fernández not Hernandez

was thinking the same, but it’s reported that Fernandez is on an innings limit for this season and will likely reach it before the Tigers face Marlins.

Since VMart probably doesn’t have a great arm anymore, it makes sense to start him when there is a lefty on the mound for the Tigers who can hopefully do a good job of holding the runners on. The Mets don’t have much power in their lineup, but they will run.

It won’t matter much. Nobody has thrown a runner out since Pena gunned down Brantley on Aug 7th. It’s not ALL on the pitcher.
Been going through the box scores to find out when we have last thrown out a base stealer. I gave up. Can’t find any game logs that have that stat. All I know is it is absolutely dreadful and we are the 3rd worst in baseball.

I mean before Aug 7th!!!!

Max is the toughest guy on the staff to catch. That is likely why he won’t catch tomorrow.

Nice Torii.

Stolen base?

And a tie game because this team cannot control a teams running game,

Just looked over to the mud hens box score and Avila is not playing. I find that strange and concerning.

Headache, held out.

Dude is a beast

Wow we need to find new words to describe Miggy.

Not referring to your post gk just that he leaves me speechless

There are no words. I do have a word for some if these pitches Jim Joyce is calling balls which are strikes.

I hate Jim Joyce….and his stupid lopsided strike zone. Wont even get into the other thing. Keep giving Dice-K those outside pitches though.

Ditto. Can’t stand him.

Like that pitch he just threw to Miggy that struck him out? Not a strike yet Doug is throwing pitches that actually are strikes and Joyce refuses to call them as such. Hes probably cost him 15 or more pitches

With Kuroda getting hit around tonight Sanchez now has best era in Al. The best pitcher nobody is even talking about.

Victor looks pretty good back there, but he hasn’t had a hit tonight. Must be pretty hard on the legs when you haven’t caught a game in a very long time. He’s probably loving it, however.

Yes he does, it will be interesting to see how he feels tomorrow.

I simply cannot believe they called Holaday out at second? Sometimes ya just gotta wonder how these guys have jobs.

Maybe because he WAS out.

I don’t think so it looked a lot like someone who WAS pulled off the bag. But that’s just my opinion and the broadcasters opinion, but we could be wrong.

Indians lost! 🙂

Good win. Good game. Good team.
Tomorrow I get to see if my blackout workaround…….works.

Good luck…….to you and the Tigers against Harvey.

Loving the positively …go Tigers

VMart looked just fine behind the plate. Nice plays to throw a couple of runners out at 1st. Blocked the ball well. He’s got to feel like a kid again back there.
Good idea to play him there a bit and I feel they are smart enough to make it a very gradual adjustment for him with the idea not getting him back behind the plate in either a starting or back-up role.

And with Avila still out an experiencing concussion symptoms Bryan might need help there.

Still moving no tigers jus highlights n box scores. Hope Alex is ok!z. Glad vmart caught last night! Torii is a BEAST! Go tigers from vermont.

Hey, Evan. You are moving to Vmont right now and the Tigers will be at Fenway in ten days!! Good plan.

Omar better have his spidey senses working when playing with Jose. Iglesias likes to flip the ball from very close to his body. He is superb at it and accurate. but on DPs it is not the easiest thing to turn one when it is not “shown” to you before you pivot. Omar has done an excellent job of working with his new partner.

Is the plan today still to rest Hunter?. Dirks and Kelly in the lineup along with Pena?
If that is the case I hope they don’t weaken the lineup further with Ramon.

No Hunter, Martinez, or Iglesias. Dirks, 2E and Santiago are in. We should win easy.
