Thursday’s lineups: Tigers vs. Royals

Austin Jackson is out of the lineup today. No official reason yet, but Jim Leyland has been talking for a while now about getting him a day off. He thought about doing it last week but changed his plans when Jackson went on a tear at the plate. Don Kelly gets the start in center, with Andy Dirks leading off.

For those of you not in Detroit or KC, tonight’s game is on MLB Network.

Meanwhile, for those of you listening on the radio in Michigan or online, don’t get confused if you hear the voice of the Red Wings. Ken Kal is filling in for Dan Dickerson tonight. It’s a scheduled absence.

No Austin!?

Jackson vs LHP: 182/.610 resting him vs Chicago was a better option.

Correct. And also in a smaller CF to cover.
Go Tigers.

former Tiger news: Rob Brantly was demoted by Miami a week ago. Duane Below released by Miami around the same time. Kyle Farnsworth released by Tampa Bay.

Below signed with a Korean team

Fielder and Martinez both bring 8 game hitting streaks into tonite’s game

Castellanos back in the lineup.

What does Austin hit against Guthrie??

Tigers have a 32-18 record within the division…3rd best in MLB (Texas 37-14 and Atlanta 33-18)

Texas is 23-30 against the rest of the AL

Royals have hit 80 HR…fewest in AL…next closest AL team is Yankees with 106. Giants (70) and Marlins (64) only have less

Austin, is a mess, and has REALLY regressed this year.

Link to an article demonstrating how amazingly good Cabrera is. Good read.

Austin is Mr. Streaky. He is either on the express train or sitting waiting for it. There is not much in between. If I were a GM I would not consider him inexpendable. He doesn’t play an aggressive game. will not sacrifice his body and will not steal bases.
He’s fun to watch chasing one down or out of the box for a stand up double. Miggy will be in the HOF. JV wants to be and is on a mission to do that, Austin hasn’t given it much thought. Too bad, because he could probably be good enough. Just not enough fire in the belly.

Mike Zagurski?

We absolutely need a LHP for our pen.

“Tigers ank 23rd in majors in defensive efficiency. With better defense, imagine how good their rotation would be” Rosenthal.
Hunter, again.

Oh, look, Prince hit a HR.

too many pitches, Anibal.

That had to feel good for Prince.
Can an will our catchers and pitchers ever ever ever be able to throw someone out? Ever?

It would certainly be interesting to find out when our catchers last threw out a base-stealer.

Peña 26 % caught stealing.
Sanchez is too slow.
Porcello throw slow pitches.
Scherzer cant pickoff runners without the fake move.
And Verlander who has been great for his career has been down this year in that too.
Fister remains almost perfect there.
Relievers are taught not to care
The problem is with pitchers

That inning was one giant big screw up on the base paths. Big! Yes Torii might of been safe but geez?

That baserunning gaffe with Dirks and Hunter? I coached a team once that did that. Of course, they were 9 year old girls. And the umpire tonight was just as incompetent as the one we had that night too. Hunter wasn’t tagged.

Justin Maxwell played his A ball down here in my neck of the woods. My wife has his bobblehead from a giveaway. Does anyone actually BUY bobbleheads?

The ump was blocked by Torii’s body. The throw beat him clearly and the tag appeared to be there from his angle.
Our fundamentals have been poor for years now. Dirks may have gotten a couple of hits for us tonight but they don’t do much good if you manage yourself like that on the basepaths.

Ya I get tired of that excuse …..your the umpire get yourself in the right position. It’s your job.

Replay isn’t going to help those umpires. They’ll still mess it up.

Those stolen bases are bordering on defensive indifference.

I think Dyson was fooled by that horrible backdrop in Comerica. Sunny days and this time of night. Worked in our favor that time.

Just sayin’, he was safe but I can understand the ump not thinking so.
As to the replay—they go from nothing to 3 a game?
Let’s go Anibal. Get yourself a couple of Ks now. Get them back on their heels.

Rod and Mario are right Sanchez gets absolutely no credit…locally or nationally.

They need to have a base running class

Didn’t they hire someone to work (w Austin mostly) on stealing bases and running the bases. Maybe it was just a part-time gig.

These boys look road weary. Rod and Mario with several miscues too.

Rondon,smyly, benoit. Run it.

Keep the ball down Anibal—Hirschbeck is calling them low.

I was looking back at some earlier box scores when AJ was on the DL Andy lead off, he performed very well then too!?

Before today as leadoff this season:278 .300 .371 .671

Ya and over 300 in the 2 hole.

But pretty bad every other spot in the batting order.

Batting before Hunter or Miguel. But other s not even there were able to hit

Anibal going out for the 8th. Good luck with that. 4th time thru the order.

Y’all watchin’ Rondon?

Benoit tonight and a double-header tomorrow.

1 2/3 yesterday too

That’s why I’m surprised he put him out there tonight. I’ll be glad when it’s over.

27 pitches yesterday.

Veras and Rondon tomorrow as closers?

Good game….quick! 🙂

“Wait, the Tigers have a baserunning consultant? (update)”

Some of you have already taken my comments for tonight. I thought Dirks was hitting better in the 1st or 2nd spot. I’ve said before that AJ doesn’t like to get his uni dirty and is not good w/RISP.

Good pitching tonight for the Tigers all around. Nice start to the series.

Amazing fact of the night: Tigers haven’t lost a home game since July 13.

Sshhhhh don’t jinx it Rich. Lol

Going to both games today and the game tomorrow night.

Have fun GK! We are going on Sunday, get to see Max pitch for the first time. Nice HR for Princie, my nephew called it, he said he signed his divorce papers and now will likely hit a homerun and he did. I was dogging Dirks about how disappointed I have been in him and he has a terrific night – guess he heard me. I like Dirks and expected bigger things, hopefully they come some day. Benoit is doing a terrific job closing out the games.

lineup: Jackson cf, Hunter rf, Cabrera 3b, Fielder dh, Martinez 1b, Tuiasosopo lf, Infante 2b, Iglesias ss, Holaday c. Verlander p.

Would be nice if we got the good Verlander today ir at least one that can give some innings and I mean 8 ……with Alvarez going tonight we are going to need the pen tonight. Go Tigers….go good Verlander !

May we please see the smart pitcher Verlander and not the egotistical thrower! JV the team needs you in the opener to pitch a complete game. Go TIGS!
