Sunday’s lineups: Tigers at Yankees

Sunday in the Bronx 002

Surprisingly, not a whole lot of matchups for Tigers hitters against Andy Pettitte. The lefty gives Leyland a chance to get Matt Tuiasosopo back into the lineup. Get ready to see a lot of him, because the Tigers will have all lefty starters in Chicago the next three days.

That does not necessarily mean a series full of Brayan Pena, though. Alex Avila got the start Sunday against Pettitte, but it’s likely that has more to do with Justin Verlander being on the mound for the Detroit side.

For those of you out of town, remember that today’s game is the Sunday afternoon game of the week on TBS. John Smoltz has been around this weekend, and should have some interesting stuff for the broadcast.

On the Bronx side, Alex Rodriguez is back in the lineup at third base. Curtis Granderson is the designated hitter, something I never thought I would see but something he has done once in each of the last few years.

TIGERS (career numbers off Pettitte)

  1. Austin Jackson, CF (1-for-4)
  2. Torii Hunter, RF (13-for-49, 2 HR, 3 walks, 14 K’s)

  6. Matt Tuiasosopo, LF (1-for-3)
  7. Hernan Perez, 2B
  8. Alex Avila, C
  9. Jose Iglesias, SS (2-for-5)

YANKEES (career numbers off Verlander)

  8. Eduardo Nunez, SS (2-for-6, HR, K)
  9. Chris Stewart, C

P: Andy Pettitte

Matter of time before we see Brian Holaday up for seven days.
Tough gig for Avila today. I can’t find record at of him hitting against Pettitte. Is that possible?

Yes,Pettitte was retired one season ,2011, when Avila became regular. Missed most of another ,2012.

Avila wont play

They scratch him?
BTW, can Dan Dickerson please teach Jim Price how to pronounce Tuiasosopo?

Yes, no reason given so far

That is precisely why the 6th spot is so critical. There are always going to be runners on for that spot and you have to find a way to get them in. 2E has been unable to do that lately. Dirks as well.

Guess I have my answer on which Verlander is showing up today. The not so good one it seems so far.

Frustrating. JV has a good breaking ball but insists on trying to overpowere with fastball. And it is not working.

I don’t know if Avila is hurt or not but doesn’t it make more senss to have Pena in ther righty?

JV prefers Alex behind the plate I think.

But his numbers are better with Peña

Only Hunter could hit from the 6th spot. The 6th is now was the 5th was last year.

Rod and Mario keep talking about Justin Verlander like an ace…he’s far from it….he’s our fourth best pitcher and sometimes I’m not even sure he’s that lately. He just doesn’t deserve to be talked about with that kind of adjulation in present terms. He’s very very average.

That “hit” by ARod looked foul and the “out” at first base by Perez looked safe. Geez! Let’s go, Tigers!!!!!!!!!!

Good job swinging st ball four there and grounding out Torii…….awesome

I’d suggest that NC may be able to handle that job. Doesn’t K much and is an RBI and extra base hit guy

Get Velander out of there if there is any chance for us to win get that premadonna out. Such a waste…..heard a story about Kaline offering money back when he felt like he didn’t like up to his contract….Verlander needs to giveaway bunch back I’m so tired of his act.

Leave them loaded again! The show has definitely swallowed up Hernan. We have to hope that we get an Omar back that is 100%. Iglesias showing growing pains

Perez has some really ugly at bats….clutch at bats there. 10 left on base through 5……a lot like Friday night.

Just got here in time for the Perez AB. Any reason given why Santiago is not playing?

fatigue prolly

It has been real Mr. Perez.

Verlander is an ace. He is just having an off year. Peralta was having a career year. I think everyone was complaining about Jhonny last year on this blog. Baseball is an interesting game year after year. Just came in from doing yard work to check the score and see Torii swing at ball four when Rod and Mario and myself told him to take that 3-1 pitch. Go Tigers!

couldn’t hear over the complaining about Delmon and Alex lol

We need Prince to be Prince….right about now.

Regarding Santiago Rich no reason given, but I know the other night they were talking about a hamstring injury.
Regarding Verlander I couldn’t disagree more……he’s no ace he’s had a few really good years, while the others have been average, mid to high 3.00 eras. Which isn’t horrible but average. Yes there were some high win totals in those years, but that had more to do with run support. I thought he was turning into one but he has really gone back to what he is, average to just slightly above. But not ace material.

Unfortunately I have a feeling that Prince is being Prince.

I can’t remember watching a more frustrating game all year. I know we have been spoiled the past 2 weeks but today simply feels like anytime someone get’s into scoring position absolutely no juice in the tank to get them home!! No-one showing even an ounce of interest in getting any RBI’s today.

Prince 1 homer since allstar break…..Jose Iglasias 1 homer since allstar break.??? Something’s wrong with that picture.

What a disappointing showing, so far. With Verlander, you have to put up runs and, so far, this team has failed miseraby this afternoon. Ugh! Looks like the start of the season. No urgency. Not hungry. Might as well take him out. He’s lost his cool.

August, 8. Beck:
Santiago, meanwhile, tweaked something behind his left knee. He said he should be all right.

Only thing going to get us a possible W here would be more heroics by Miggy if he can any decent pitches to hit which is VERY unlikely!

Team won a lot of games without Miggy. They seemed to step up. Maybe guys depend on him too much.

I’m still wondering why Alex was scratched. I feel bad to 2E. There was a stretch of several weeks when he hardly played and now he looks awful at the plate. Hernan hasn’t learned to make adjustments. Maybe he will and maybe he won’t.

I think we have to have more life at the bottom of the lineup. You can’t function well with guys hitting around .200

Why should A-Rod be allowed to play the rest of the season just because he wants arbitration. I think tjis is unfair to those other olayers who accepted thier fate?

due process.

True, he is innocent until the final decision. If he is absolved you cant restore him the time lost

It seems weird with Arod, but they explained it really well on MLB channel the oter day…..most of the time ( like last year with Colon and Melky Cabrera). There appeals are going on and nobody even knows that anything is going on. And just because this was so public and leaked everyone knows about it. But I agree it feels weird but normally we wouldn’t even know there was an appeal.

Imo, I think it’s the length of the suspension. Braun only got 65 games.

Well 33 runners left on base so far this series. 14 Friday 7 yesterday and 12 so far today. Not a winning recipe at all.

Iggy thinks he was safe. So does Leland.

Yup, he was safe.

Just pathetic.

Umpires inventing ways to screw over the Tigers today….just not in the cards. Pretty big mistake by Austin.

Not our day. Things just not going our way. Hunter nothing to show for his last 2 at bats and both were very well struck. AJ’s ball was that close to a double and a run. No puck luck today.

Unbelievable!! We have tried to give this game away! The umps have tried to take it away! But yet we tie it up 4-4 in the top of the 9th. Now it’s time to rip the rug out from under the Yanks and steal this series!!

If we don’t steal it, they will. Let’s go Tigers!!!!!!! Light a candle!!!!!!!

They stole it.

No Inter-Departmental Communication. Too often the dewfense or the pen lets down the team after the offense surprises. That euphoria doesn’t seem to transcend somehow. Two glorious comebacks and magnifcence by Miggy absolutely wasted.

Pitch was teed up for Gardner. Oh well it was fun for a minute. Cleveland won and KC is on there way to a win. Pretty pathetic they couldn’t get at least 2 from them. Three pronged failure today….Justin not good, stranded a lot of runners and epic upping failures.

Alex with a concussion. Thank goodness for hospital analysis, huh?

That game today was never going to be won. It is kind of amazing, however, that Rivera blew two saves in the series and we lost both games. It was another strange weekend in NY, and this isn’t the first one.
Umpires this season have put on a clinic in incompetence. There’s no excuse for this.
I don’t know what to think of the way Avila’s situation has been handled.
Thanks to those who answered my Santiago question, although that was the last news I had too. Perez sure isn’t ready for this right now. Either Omar or Ramon has to get in there.

anybody have the stat for how many runners fielder has left on base for the season?

dunno but i’d be willing to bet it is numero uno in the AL – maybe even the MLB.

Whelp I think it is getting clearer and clearer: We need to go find a catcher who can a) consistently give you more than 110 games (alex has done that 1 time in his career) behind the plate, b) can throw out more than 25% (alex is throwing out 17% this year) and c) can give you 700OPS or better (alex has done this 3 out of 5 seasons).

Also i think it is time to admit Tui is not a 6th-hole guy.

Does anyone know why NC left Toledo’s game on Sat??. He did not start Sunday.

HBP. He will be examined

Thanks, El Tigre.

I’m not giving up on Hernan yet. He has some good tools. You are asking guys from AAA to be professional hitters overnight and there’s not very many of those. Even if they bring up Nick C., what happens if he struggles at the plate? Don’t want to ruin a guy’s confidence like that. It was bad enough with BB. Not very many young guys can perform at the level of play the Tigers demand to stay in the pennant race.

Not giving up on Perez, just saying this isn’t his time. And I think he came from AA? Somebody goes down when Infante returns so Hernan would be it, I’d think.
All of a sudden, there are tons of injuries. I expect Infante tomorrow, and a status on Santiago would be nice.

Does anyone know what the run support for Max is? How about Justin? Thanks. Name some pitchers that are aces.

6.17 Scherzer. First. Verlander : 5.28 8th.Kershaw:3.00 91rst Sale. 2.94 last. Strasburg: 2.61. The main rival of Scherzer for the Cy Young: Hernandez: 4.16 41rst

Some guys handle the transition very well. Trout, Puig, Harper,Myers. To name a few.
NC will surprise people with his ability. I think he knows he is ready for the big time and his up and down performance at AAA is a result of discouragement.
With JP gone, Miggy hurt, Fielder under achieving, Omar out, Avila out and under achieving, Iglesias on training wheels, 2E maxed out, Dirks unable–the lineup needs some stimulus from somewhere else than the top 3.
