Saturday’s lineups: Tigers at Yankees

Saturday in NY 002

Miguel Cabrera had a pretty good-sized bandage on his left shin, but his knee wasn’t wrapped. That’s a good sign. He probably would’ve played regardless, but he was moving around the clubhouse pretty well Saturday morning. So were most of the players despite the quick turnaround.

The only changes in the Tigers lineup: Don Kelly gets the start in left despite being 1-for-9 off Hughes, while Alex Avila (1-for-10 with four strikeouts) is behind the plate for Anibal Sanchez.

The bigger changes are in the Yankees lineup, where Jayson Nix gets the start at third base over Alex Rodriguez. Joe Girardi told New York reporters Saturday morning it was a reaction to a day game after a night game.

“It’s a day-by-day [plan],” Girardi said. “When you think about the real late night last night, if we don’t have that late night, maybe I play him today. It would have been his first day game after a night game. I’m just trying to be proactive in this, and make sure we don’t run him into the ground where he ends up hurting something else.”

What ever happaned to Matt Tui starting? Is he hurt or on the outs with Jim?

Cooling off. He’s 6-for-37 with 15 K’s over the past month.

RHP. JL has built in methods of giving his favourites playing time. It’s called platooning and playing the percentages. The RHB vs LHP and vice versa cliche gives him the excuse to do this.
That said, 2E is not playing as well as he was and he is slow in left field. I still believe that they actually need to call up Nick Castellanos to fill that gaping RBI hole in the lineup that Peralta vacated.
I think the guy is ready. He is hitting OK for Toledo but I think he really needs the challenge of MLB. If the4y call him up in September and he rips the cover off the ball they are gonna be stuck with being unable to use him. Try him out now. What have you got to lose? We are not getting premium production out of anybody else out there right now anyway.

As soon as he is part of the organization by August 31, he can make the playoff roster replacing Dotel who is on DL.Or Marte, who was recalled for the same purpose.

this was a pivotal season for Dirks’ career…had a great opportunity to establish himself as a regular. it looks like he’ll be settling into a role as a 4th OF. will be interesting to see if Castellanos gets a Sept 1 recall. seems highly likely…needs to get his feet wet in the majors in case they have an OF injury down the stretch. am guessing Downs, Reed, Holaday, and Perez (demoted after Infante returns) will be the others.

Reed could come before september if Albuquerque keep failing. And Downs cant be worse than Coke, he deserves a chance too before september.
2E is regressing to his career norm like Berry before him.

Downs hasn’t shown to be better than coke. with less experience. just saying

JL has a lot of attributes but also some obvious shortcomings. Last night was one of them. It’s mis-managing the bullpen. It was evident that IF the Tigers were going to get back into the game that the game would be tight and that means a possibility of extra innings. Shot all of his bullets too quickly. You do NOT want A2 to be throwing for you in extra innings. He is a 6th or 7th inning guy or a guy you bring in specifically with 1 out and men on 2nd and 3rd. His wildness does not relate well to late innings. He was a bit unlucky last night in that Pena forgot how to block a ball behind the plate. Still, A2 facing Gardner, Suzuki and Cano is not a pretty sight.
DD still needs to find a LHP for that bullpen. Veras was a good acquisition but it is abundantly clear that Smyly is not enough. I don’t count Coke and Downs is not the solution either. Better scour that waiver wire buddy, or you will squander games away like this again.
Veras can’t throw two innings? C’mon, he certainly can and if he can’t, then they got the wrong addition to the pen.
Nice to see Mr. Streaky (AJ) back to squaring the ball up again.

We will be in deep do-do if Anibal has a short outing. So, here’s hoping he has a great outing.

You can’t count on Dirks. He is not responding well in clutch situations. Kelly is better in those situations than Andy. Neither is a solution to a well-rounded lineup. The bottom of the lineup is a definite problem. It has been but the bottom of the lineup is also getting longer, now that JP is gone. They need extra base/RBIproduction coming from it and not bloop singles at best. Omar will be under pressure when he returns and I fear he will be less than 100%. Hopefully Iglesias can learn to handle his role, lay off the sliders. Avila just has to make sure he doesn’t take any fastballs down the middle and get behind in the count.

Wow to me last nights lose had some but little to do with the pitchers or Leyland squandering anything it had a heck of a lot more to do with stranding 14 runners on base, 2 for 13 risp including 8 by Torii, 7 by Dirks and 4 by Victor and AJ…… It was mostly all about the failures of 1-9. ( yes I know AJ hit he ball well last night, just not when there were guys on base in front of him)

lots of stranding. Good point.

” Albuquerque and Veras unavailable today, and maybe Rondon too”?

Jackson went 4 for 6 , Scored two runs. He did his part. 8 for 17 , last 3 games.

i hope he is coming around!

Jackson was awesome…last night but I didn’t think it was fair to include VMart in my guys who stranded a lot of runners with four and not include Austin.

He must hate the Yankees

Jackson manufacturing a run

Repeat: AJ not good w/RISP.

you saying he’s due?

Gone

Against a pretty good pitch

Miguel´s Hr

Sure wish our bats would heat up a bit. Need some tack on runs.

That’s a hit with Peralta!

Peralta-Fielder and that runner was at 2B

VMart made a very nice play on Iglesias’ throw that Prince physically could not. That was a very tough in between hop.
Iglesias made a play that will make us look forward to more. I don’t think he has what you would call a cannon for an arm, but he is quick to release and accurate.
Pretty to watch.
Hitting wasn’t any better than it has been, many runners stranded, as pointed out, but it does not change the way JL managed the pen last night. Turn the job over to Jones!
Need to do more against Hughes. We have hits, we have been jackingup the pitch count but we still have only 2 runs. Anibal deserves more support.

turn bullpen management over to the pitching coach? interesting thought. Has that occurred in the past on other teams? How did it work out?

Gardner trying to end the career of another one of our infielders

How long has it been Alex?

Still cant throw anyone out…one of our Achilles Heals

In his defense, Sanchez is slow on the mound.

The new Yankee Killer with the RBI

I SEE YOU auuuuustiiiiiin

Alex is not throwing as well as he used too. Accuracy, strength and release are all diminished, IMHO.
Wow, is AJ ever hitting—just don’t have a guy on 3rd when he come up!

The yankee coach made very smart move pulling pitcher before cabby came up.

.423 at yankees ballpark for miggy. For the fun of the conversation…..what do you think the Yankees would give us for the last 2 years of Miggy’s contract?

Beside Sanchez, they have nothing. The few players of their farm are with the team

AJ not good under pressure with RISP but WHOOOOOA when he leads off.

Evan how much would they give for Princes?

good q

So not a strike on Fielder there in the 5th.

Donny Kelly baby!

Even more important given what has happened thus far in the bottom of the inning.

Sanchez left that on a tee for Overbay? Ouch

Anibal is a little ticked off now!

2 hours. Oddly, the Tigers are the ones working the count and slowing the clock

Long inning and then with the advantage, he pitched for contact as he is expected to do with 6 -0.

Eltigre…I just noticed you said earlier Veras not available today. …I dont get it he only threw 15 pitches last night and didnt pitch the night before. Unless there is something wrong I don’t understand

I read that Leyland said that during the pre-game . I was looking confirmation too. Supposedly, he was not used to pitch that much with Houston

Torii taking away RBI chances from Miggy

Don Kelly has been walking more this year than his previous season’s in Detroit. This (and a slight power increase) has allowed him to hit nearly .100 pts higher in OPS.

Torii hunter another hit wow he’s a keeper folks!

95-97 in sight

Jason, maybe I missed it somewhere, but why is Iglecias (sp) removed from the game late for defensive purposes? I thought that’s why the Tigers got him.

They have pinch hit for him twice which removed him from the game. It was not for defense.

Heres a stat to chew on. Don kelly is hitting only 15 points behind prince. .247 for kelly and .262 for prince. Thats crazy.

That’s an 8 game lead with 47 to play. This is going really well, folks.

Jackson cf, Hunter rf, Cabrera 3b, Fielder 1b, Martinez dh, Tuiasosopo lf, Perez 2b, Avila c, Iglesias ss. Verlander p

Verlander ERA is now 3.50 .17 th in the AL. The misplay by Dirks changed to E
