Wednesday’s lineups: Tigers at White Sox

No Miguel Cabrera tonight. Jim Leyland told reporters in Chicago that Cabrera was feeling a little better today, but not good enough to go. We’ll see what that means for tomorrow’s series finale.

With Cabrera out, Matt Tuiasosopo gets another start in the third spot in the order. He’s 1-for-6 off John Danks for his career. Alex Avila, 6-for-14 off Danks, gets the start over Brayan Pena, who’s 2-for-9 against him.

TIGERS (career numbers off John Danks)

  1. Austin Jackson, CF (10-for-25, 2 HR, 4 walks, 5 K’s)
  2. Torii Hunter, RF (10-for-33, HR, 3 walks, 5 K’s)
  3. Matt Tuiasosopo, LF (1-for-6, 2 K’s)
  4. Prince Fielder, 1B (3-for-3)
  5. Victor Martinez, DH (7-for-31, 3 HR, 2 walks, 4 K’s)
  6. Jhonny Peralta, SS (9-for-42, HR, 7 walks, 10 K’s)
  7. Don Kelly, 3B (1-for-3)
  8. Hernan Perez, 2B
  9. Alex Avila, C (6-for-14, walk, 3 K’s)

P: Anibal Sanchez

WHITE SOX (career numbers off Sanchez)

  1. Alejandro De Aza, CF (2-for-3, K)
  2. Alexei Ramirez, SS (1-for-3)
  3. Alex Rios, RF (0-for-2, walk)
  4. Adam Dunn, 1B (6-for-24, 3 walks, 10 K’s)
  5. Paul Konerko, DH
  6. Jeff Keppinger, 2B (1-for-3, K)
  7. Conor Gillaspie, 3B (1-for-5, walk)
  8. Dayan Viciedo, LF (0-for-2, K)
  9. Josh Phegley, C (1-for-3, HR)

P: John Danks

I would like to see the Tigers sigh Gibson and Trammell.

Sign Demitri young – play him at 2B so the combined weight of the infield can be over 1000lbs if jhonny’s playing short.
I can only hope Danks tanks and Prince continues his ways with him. Good luck 2E tonight is a like a makeup test: fail this one and the opportunity might not come around again. Can Austin get going tonight?? If so I think we win!

OT: Is DD thinking that Bonderman and/or Jurrjens can solve some bullpen problems this year? One week to go for bringing in anyone else.

I think Bondo could help the bullpen, but we’ll see.

they had better bring in someone else!!

I think that could be a backup if the trades just don’t work out. There’s a limit to what a club should give up for a relief pitcher. Bottom line, though, is both guys are no risk investments. A deal will still be made.

Does the work from the pen since the break, lesson the bullpen concerns? I would like to add a lefty in the pen. The 7, 8, 9 has looked good since Rondon’s command improve and Smyly moved to 7/8 spot. Coke used only against leftys is the only way to use him. The urgency is certainly not great enough to give up a top ten prospect.

you’d still be counting on unproven arms. the only proven thing we have is beniot. that’s not enough for a WS contender IMO

If Sanchez can pitch anywhere near as well as last time, the Tigers have a chance tonight. But they must hit Danks to win. Captain Obvious here.

Again, I took the garbage out and the score is 3-0.

Nice Prince…been waiting to see that for a while.

Nice job to get out of that mess there in the first.

Prince’s HR was no garbage hit. No Sox score in the first and AJ keeps hs uni clean.

wow both prince and AJ doin well tonight —> VERY GOOD SIGNS

Soooo that’s why AJ didn’t want his uni dirty. It might have slowed his swing. Nice HR, AJ!

2E has really stepped up and helped the team this year. I don’t think he is going to be able to continue the torrid pace he was on and I would not be surprised if he returns to previous levels.
VMart is getting such nice swings at the plate right now. If we could get the middle of the lineup all stroking the ball like they can for a few weeks we might be able to get a sizeable lead and reduce the pressure on our bullpen.
Anibal was incredible in that 1st inning.
Avila is becoming an embarrassment. I can’t remember the last perfect throw he’s made to 2nd. There was a time they were all perfect and ropes as well.
Leyland is going to have to start sitting more. At this point in time, Pena is the better all around catcher.

Mildly concerned……but I see that Omar was hit by a pitch tonight at West Michigan and removed for a pinch runner. Hopefully some idiot minor league pitcher didn’t injure him and was only taken out because they were losing 9-2.

AJ not good with RISP, especially swinging at 2 pitches in the dirt. Thank you AA for the hit and RBI.

Victor O’fer today. Could just as easily as had a perfect day at the plate. Hit the ball well every time up.

Said the same thing.

I was just thinking about Ventura over(under?) managing then JL goes and brings in Coke in a 6-2 ball game with 2 outs to get???!

I suppose he’ll bring in Benoit to pitch to Ramirez?

I could get used to this!

Shaky bullpen but Tigers win. Can JV give them the sweep tomorrow?

We haven’t seen the Sox in the first half and it appears their W-L record is well earned. I hope they keep sleeping.
We’ve bought two days of rest for Cabrera so he can take another one if necessary.
I think we saw tonight why we still need relief help.

Dombrowski has to do something about the pen. Smyly and Benoit will be exhausted if they don’t have a decent supporting cast. Coke is no good. Putkonen is a minor leaguer. Q is incredibly inconsistent. Rondon is a baby. Downs is a specialist. You should only use him when your starter is knocked out of the box and your 10 runs behind.
He missed the mark on getting a closer. he missed the opportunity to get an experienced KRod.
At the very least he needs another shut down, late inning capable lefty.
Good teams have good bull pens. That goes for the regular season and certainly for the post-season.
Get to work David. It’s quite obvious where the deficiencies are on this ball club.

couldn’t agree more

Jon Daniels is taking care of business and appears to understand how to be serious about getting to the post-season.
Is DD gonna pussy-foot around with Valverde, Bonderman, and Jurrjens while other teams “go for it”?

I wouldn’t be surprised if he was working on something.

Either Coke or Putkonen could have and probably would have finished tonight’s game. The fact that Jim didn’t wait around tells us all we need to know. A deal will be made. One thing I’ve learned is to not even try to guess what Dave is going to do.

In Putkonens defense I don’t b he has pitched since July 13th. That’s a long time. Do I think he’s a great pitcher no, but he’s not horrible either. A lot of rust on that guy.

Leyland after not wanting to use Benoit: “If we don’t start getting thru the 9th w/o him, we won’t have a closer. He’ll be worn out”?
Then why he went with Smyly in the 8th instead of keeping him for the 9th?He has pulled Smyly in the 9th with two at least twice to use Benoit. He is at fault for the overwork
He used Coke and pulled him after one hitter.. Coke strictly as a LOOGY could work but that is almost impossible. Only a few teams plays like Kansas , 3 LH in line. With the game 6-1, he could have take the risk

Agree about Putkonen.
Jackson avg with RISP is higher by a point than Fielder´s

That’s ” I don’t believe he has pitched”

A lot of you are saying we need a closer. I think we have found one in Benoit. Starting pitchers go at least 6, Rondon in the 7th, Smyly in the 8th, and Benoit in the 9th. Pretty simple formula………Well, you know what I mean. If our stating pitchers pitch like they should and our hitting is consistent, WS bound. Congrats to Victor, he has been smoking the ball.

rondon and smyly? while pitching well are gambles. 1 injury and 1 begins to be unable to adjust to how other managers approach him…..and you have nothing but a closer! 150M dollars — just toss 5M more and go get you some insurance! A proven piece – LHP preferrably!

Don’t look now, but the Tigers are 29-19 at home and 27-25 on the road. That’s big boy numbers.

I see that Bonderman pitched a clean 8th inning. I have been wrong before, but I believe that in the bullpen Bonderman can be very effective.
Jurrjens – funny that many Tiger fans were disappointed short term with the trade (myself included) but the reasons the Tiger’s traded him was they were concerned about his durability. And they front office was right. They picked the wrong SS to targer, but that is another story.

All true re Jurrjens.
I’m interested in seeing what Bonderman can do in relief. From discussions over the years here, I think a lot of us are. He still has the fastball and slider and brings that “unique” personality that is always fun.

Leyland on using Benoit the past two nights: “I don’t (expletive) around in ballparks where it goes out like a (expletive) ping-pong ball.”
That’s a nice firm answer.
Cabrera sitting today. Good move.
