Sunday’s lineups: Tigers at Royals

Left-handed hitters are batting just .237 off of James Shields this year, which explains in part why Jim Leyland is using Brayan Pena (4-for-8 lifetime off Shields) behind the plate today despite Alex Avila’s three-hit game. However, Andy Dirks still gets the start in left field over Matt Tuiasosopo, who’s 1-for-6 with three strikeouts against Shields.

The Royals turn to Jarrod Dyson for a start in center field against Doug Fister, with Lorenzo Cain shifting over to right.

P: James Shields

Watching the pregame show and they ar talking about if 2E should get a bit more playing time ( I’m sure some of you are watching) and C-mo says yes. I’m not sure if I’ve ever seen anybody on FSN’s coverage ever question a lineup decision like that.

They will play against 4 LH this week,2E is expected to play unless there is any issue

Leland spoke on the radio with Dan & Jim re Omar. He’s getting better but also has some back issues.

This is the pitcher the Tigers were interested in? Big Game James?

The rumor was about swapping him and Porcello. He was struggling last season before ASG

Regarding Omar….maybe because he’s favoring one side it’s wacked his back out shape.
Nice homer Miggy!
James Shields was getting some pitches well off the plate called strikes I hope Fister sees the same zone.

exactly Gk good call

Miguel! He makes the pitcher (and umpire pay). I’m not usually for complaining but I am just wondering where his right eye is pointing. Obviously not straight forward. Austin and Torii were shafted.

Another error

That error cost Fister 10 pitches, probably an inning today.

Well, at this rate, Mister Fister might get through 4 innings.

Anyone else think Victor should play first for visiting inter league games? Probably never happen though.

V-mart must be eating his Wheaties.

VMart’s bad base running may have cost a run.

My phone rang and I missed the play but I thought Jhonny was safe at 1st.

Ya I think so.

More mistake-laden baseball.

I know I’m a homer but are you guys seeing Doug get the same wide strike zone as Shields?

Mud hens are beating up on their opponent again today. Avi is still smacking the ball around in AAA. ..he just looked over matched in the bigs but what else does he have to do down there?

Dan and Jim: Tigers playing .500 in last 66 games. Everyone’s surprised and puzzled.

Most fun team to watch, Tigers or Royals?

Garcia as soon as he is allowed to play everyday and not bounced from Toledo to Detroit. And Castellanos. Being RH they will get no playing time Then Lennerton who no has position to play. And nothing else.

good talent in all the right places: the farm

Was doing a few things and couldn’t comment but the double play we turned and Miggy made a real nice play on Tejada. I thought that Dyson caught that homer I had to look at it more than once.

Coke next

Couldn’t watch Saturday night’s game. Gone away. Just as well, I suppose. I’ve been a fan for 60 years and I don’t remember being so discouraged as I have the last few years. The script never seems to change. Does anyone have any encouraging words about this team?

2003 called and said that sounded a bit melodramatic.

best response of the year

No PH?

See what I mean? Runners can only get to one base at a time. Bases loaded. A sub catcher gets the only run in on a SF. I repeat, AJ is no good with RISP.

Boy did that ump get that call wrong on that NOT a foul tip on Hosmer…
Yes it is very frustrating that this team over the last few days has been unable to get that nail in the coffin hit. Not just Jackson though….lots of culprits on that count.

So DD was right about Rondon. He will be a closer not far from now

Tigers win! Nice pitching by Fister, Smyly, Rondon and Benoit. Fister got some run support.

Fortunate matchups in the 7th and 8th for Smyly and Rondon, but that’s not to take anything away from their performances. Good bullpen work today.
Pretty shaky umpiring all weekend.
I want to bring this up: Martinez and Fielder swap places. Victor is the better hitter and a switch hitter, so there’s no matchup advantage to walking Cabrera. Victor hit cleanup in 2011 when we won 95 games.

No, Victor hit 5th in ’11 but behind Miggy who was cleanup. But I agree with the swap.

That’s right. Delmon hit 5th in 2012, behind Prince. Jeez, you’d think I could remember Leyland’s etched in stone lineups.🙂

Interesting point Rich….I like it.

Smyly vs the three LH and Rondon against the 3 RH but not in the innings they are supposed to pitch under the formula.
They same worked with Coke and Rondon on Friday.
That how a committee works.

glad to see prince and andy get some hits today. rondon is pitching well – he’s getting them out on the slider which is encouraging!
