Thursday’s lineups: Tigers vs. White Sox

Much the same lineup for Chris Sale as the Tigers sent out Tuesday against Jose Quintana. About the only Tiger with past success against Sale is Jhonny Peralta, 4-for-11 off of him, which is why I picked him in Beat the Streak today. The White Sox, meanwhile, put Jeff Keppinger at first base and shift Adam Dunn to DH.

Well……it will be interesting and possibly frustrating to see how the guys handle a very good pitcher in Sale today. Won’t see the game today…work work work. Go Tigers.

Should be interesting to see how they do against such a good pitcher today.

especially Fielder-
perfect day to take the day off for him – but no way. Prince won’t have it.

Meanwhile my Twitter timeline is blowing up with Benoit votes. This ends at four? It won’t be readable by then. This is a bad day for Kate Upton to ask me for a date on Twitter.

LOL.
Just for fun:
Would you trade JV for Tulo?
Fielder for Cargo?
Wouldn’t the Prince love to play in Colorado!

i would have traded JV for many many things. But boy oh boy did people get upset when i mentioned such things 6 months ago.

I felt the same wrath when I suggested trading Porcello at the beginning of the year.

hahah we can discuss the differences tho ;)

Sounds like Mr. D has been on the phone..alot!

I’d trade JV for Tulo straight up.

Oh yes!

I’m more interested in finding legitimate arms for the pen – Axford comes to mind first.

Rondon better stay away from the dinner table for a few days/weeks or they’ll have to carry him out there to pitch.

That was a fair ball, but I’m not sur the Tigers thought so….Miguel reaction to the play seemed odd.

Anibal having a difficult time with th strike zone here in the first, but I’m sure they will get it together, I hope.

Gotta getback to work but those were ome very ugly at bats by the Tigers there n th first. Could be a long day hopefully that won continue.

prince!

victor!

I have meetings all afternoon so just one item – 2E has got some serious long-ball power – gotta find a way to keep his bat warm and in the line-up. I guess 2 items – VMart is warming up quite nicely, I think he got his batting legs back under him.

blue darter up the gap! Torii scoops up a triple!

Does not look like much fun hitting off Sales.
More fun drinking off-sales!

JL could light a smoke off Victor!

We really need to find a way to get Victor home after that leadoff double.

I totally agree with sending VMart home. The throw was almost better than perfect and Victor almost made it regardless.

The only problem it presents for us is the lift it COULD give the Sox. Very important inning for Anibal.

Here’s a good article from Tony Paul about playing RF in Comerica. Torii has had some issues and I don’t need to mention that many of our previous RFers have too. Magglio had success with his conservative approach.

Not cool with the chin music right after slamming down the resin bag in anger, Sale. Maybe pitchers SHOULD hit.

Leading so far thanks to 2E and Miggy and Anibal settling down. I hope JL does not sit 2E as soon as the Sox bring in a RH reliever. A wasted triple and double. AJ just won’t slide to catch a ball. Might get his pants dirty> Is he on laundry duty or something?

wow that all went to heck quick

102 pitches ends his day

Posted on the wrong thread. Not sure why Leyland left him in. You will. see I predicted this one.

And they just paid the price. Grand Slam. But Torii is left standing at 3rd with a triple and V-Mart is called out on Perez’s first hit and AJ has clean pants.

Oh my goodness. What a mess. Why does Detroit always seem to get penalized the most.

What are these umps doing?

unbelievable umpiring. they just warned both sides – after kicking out putkonen!! what kinda of b&llsh$t is this! Rameriz is still out there – that f**k is this? Am I going nuts? Is this really happening? Is JL even kicked out!?

is it ok to cheer for rameriz injury?

no. That’s awful.

ok just checking since he deserved to be kicked out for walking towards our pitcher…

Is Al going to get us out of this inning with no more damage. I sure do hope so. Light a candle!

Al isn’t throwing strikes.

More important is this game. I blame JL for being behind. Sanchez was done when he walked Gillaspie after being ahead 1-2.
Definitely after the Beckham single. The pitch count was getting high for Anibal coming back from that injury and he was missing his location.
It was clear. JL has a loft of problem taking out any starter not named Porcello.
Just does not recognize when they are tired. Jeff Jones needs to be in his ear.
And we need Francisco Rodriguez.

No ok to cheer for injury, we are not Philly.
However Alexei should have been ejected in the first place. He was charging the mound and is still in the game?????
As a Tiger fan, it is hard to type this, but I do not think Sale was throwing at Prince. Think it got away from him. But the warning should have happened right then, that is terrible umping.

At worked….why the ejections? Whats going on?

You picked a heck of a day to be at work, gk.

Illinoifan, that wasn’t a diving play for Jackson. It was a simple shoestring grab that he misjudged, most likely because of the ballpark’s weird construction. I wish they’d never built that place.

Good points, Dan, of course. But my question was, who do I bring in? That pen is weak.

Just got home from a meeting. Why did Sanchez come back out for the 6th?

Jim let him.

he was at 89 pitches and it was the 6th….remember we have no bullpen!

Look at that big crowd and all the kids there. Let’s hope the Tigers can show some fire in their bats.

We do have a bullpen. They may not be the most reliable but the arms are fresh. When a starter “loses it” he’s done. Period. Jim is fixated on getting 7 from his starters.

What to do with Phil Coke?

dl, aaa

coke’s gone flat

Please, Mr D, get us BP help.

at LEAST 2 arms

Im so sick of this phil coke debacle. He makes me sick. And jim leyland is stupid to keep putting him out there. Im tired of his b.s. “i gotta get him going i gotta get him going”. Get a clue dumbass! Hes never gonna get it going. Alls he does is embarass the tigers every time he pitches. I dont remember the last time he came in and didnt give up a run. Man i hope D.D. makes a move soon cuz we need some help in that pen.

jim price is killin me with “disabled list for radar guns”

I know AJ has made some terrific catches and some great hits but I don’t think he is as aggressive as he could be. Someone else commented on this blog that he never or seldom dives for a ball and why hasn’t he stolen more bases? There may be other reasons but it doesn’t appear as though he likes to get down and dirty.

oh, for chrissakes,, that’s ridiculous. Berry got down and dirty, but that was “because he took bad routes”, stole bases and never got caught, but that wasn’t appreciated. Austin got caught quite a few times last year, if I’m remembering right. He’s not a sprinter. He makes almost every play he’s asked to make in a HUGE CF. I just don’t get all the complaints unless you are expecting someone whose perfect.

to be fair JL did not send phil coke out there today and isn’t able to pull him before he loaded the bases

Ya your right. I forgot leyland got ejected. But its not like he doesnt keep sending him out there. Its just really frustrating. I dont like to complain about players/managers much but this is getting old and i mean really old. This guy should of been cut or sent down a long time ago. Its insanity. Doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results. I just cant stand it anymore.

Can’t get a thing for Coke. Just send him down or release him. Cut your losses. It doesn’t matter he is high energy, or that he is eccetnric, or that he throw with his left arm, has a good fastball and slider. He get hit and he give up runs–BIG runs. They have to let him go.
KRod. get him. He will help.

Coke better be sent down now, he doesn’t have it anymore.

Coke needs to visit Toledo.

Yes, Coke is very inept. Just how many new bullpen guys will they need? is it possible to find that many? Who will they have to give up to det anybody? Why was Brandon Lyon cut loose? Can he be helpful?

3 runs down you can’t be swingin. at the 1st pitch. Have a look.

problem is our starters lately too, we need them to go 7 more consistently. Smyly then Benoit are fine but anyone else is really struggling right now. I’m mostly blaming the bull pen but it’s not entirely on them, starters need to step up too

We’re very thin down at Toledo too. They may as well bring up Alvarez and stick him in the pen. At least he has an idea. Hoffman is another lefty (not on the 40) and has had a pretty nice year.
Ortega could help but he is another guy who can get prone to walking guys.

Toledo thin? Whatever happened to all these pitchers they drafted over the years? I’m not sure they really gave some like Below and Furbush time to prove themselves.

I feel your pain Price, frustrated. Hate losing to the Sox

Don K about to bring us back Mr. Leyland

how on earth did don kelly get in the game with JL not making the calls? I thought that was a key part in the conspiracy…

Calling Bryan Villereal…..

yea how does the farm look? anyone know?

Not good. …….

So nobody ever told me what happened in that inning with ejections and such?

Lyon was cut only to avoid paying the incentives of his contract. One bad outing gave then the excuse.
Furbush is a player that would be good to trade for. He served to get Fister so no complains there by me at least.
Coke time to be optioned is coming to an end soon. July 19 is Im not wrong

I have said it many time I rather see the CF giving a single than a 3B. I mentioned the lower number of xbases but as I have said before Jackson is my favorite position player( used to be Granderson ,since Jackson is in the same spot, well…)

Retire while you are winning .. and call the bullpen. If you cant trust them, why carry them? Of course going deep in the games is good thing but with a reasonable count

If what you say about Lyon is correct, DD should get him. With all the money they have already spent, what’s a little more to solve this bullpen mess? Who would have thought that Downs, Villareal, Q, Coke , Dotel and whoever would have all failed at the same time? (Not to mention VV.) Check out Carlos Marmol. He failed as a closer but he was decent in less stressful situations. They shouldn’t have to give up much to get Furbush back. Papelbon will be too expensive to get and to pay. What are some other possibilities? I keep reading here about F-Rod?

MLBTR about Lyon:
http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2013/07/mets-designate-brandon-lyon-for-assignment.html

Greeg,Cubs , Axford. KRod, Brewers Downs.Halos .Webb Ciske. Marlins, are the main options: probably in the market, cheap, and good enough.
No way the Twins trade Perkins or DD give something to the CWS for Lindstrom
None is worth Castellanos or Garcia

Morosi says Tigers were scouting the Giants. I guess Jose Mijares is not the player being scouted.

Gage:
“Peralta now 10-for-56 (.179) in last 13 games. Batting average has dropped from .322 to .298″
A 400 Babip backed avg usually ends that way

has a .313BABIP over that time period (not including today)

2 GDP and no power to speak of (slugging .265 over that period as well)

Precisely, he had a 400 babip or near most of the season. Regression was due and will continue. Still at 383 for the season. 314 career Babip avg.

would bonderman accept a minor league assignment with the tigers – in hopes (and dreams) that he can be a good reliever?

Garcia , HR
Castellanos last 10: 209

Brutal loss for the Tigers. I hate when they lose to the ChiSox more than any other team. I know Coke will be taking some abuse, but the offense still isn’t doing what they’re capable of, and that’s putting up the runs needed to win.

The worst part is I’m just sure I lost Kate Upton’s date request tweet in that mountain of #backbenoit tweets.

Here is my take on some of the events now that I’ve been able to look at some of it.
.
There is no way I woulda taken out Sanchez going into the 6th the last few innings were not stressful and they wanted to stretch him out to closer to 100. Jackson doesn’t make that error….the second guy who wound walking was struck out….then the next guy did strike out…see where I’m going. Should he maybe have been taken out after or befor Beckham probably, maybe?
.
Regarding the Sale/Cabrera/Fielder incident. Sale was pissed Cabrera homered pouted on the mound threw down the bag, intentionally it appeared he threw near Fielders head. He is a side slinger and I’m not sure how he as a side slinging lefty could get it up in that area if he wasn’t trying o get it there. There should of been warnings.
.
Ramirez if he just would of taken it….acted like Prince did when it was thrown at hs freaking head it woulda been done. But no he and his scrawny but go all hot head and start something big. What really stinks Tigers will get the brunt of the punishment and Sale and Ramrez will get away with it.
.
And not that I would cheer it but its poetic justice that Ramirez pulled his hammy isn’t it?
.
Starting pitching and relief pitching has got to do better. Offense while realistically 3 runs off a pitcher like Sale is pretty good, there was a lot of wasted opportunity there today. But today was a team failure as it is most losses are.
.

GK – didn’t see him throw down the rossin bag. He should have been warned, no doubt.
Putkonen needs to plunk him if you are going to send a message. Not up high, but if that is your intent, actually hit him. You are going to pay the price regardless.
Ramirez needed to be tossed, he was charging the mound. That makes no sense. Also, he is not hurt bad. Ramirez had cramps, so he is day-to-day.
Leyland had to get tossed, glad he did. Gotta stick up for the guys.

I did see Sale slam down the resin bag as Miggy trotted down the thirdbase line. The next pitch was at the head and I commented here immediately before Putkonen even became involved. That’s how intentional it looked. I don’t care if the pitcher performs that fake “look up at the sky, it slipped” acting job. The Tigers aren’t the team that overreacts to things.

Absolutely Rich and Portwineland
