Sunday’s lineups: Tigers at Indians

I’ve seen two different versions of the Tigers lineups. The hitters are the same, but the question is whether Prince Fielder is the first baseman or the designated hitter. Jim Leyland said early in the week that he’d DH Fielder in a game this weekend. After that double play Saturday, though, he’s on a roll.

“It’s knowledge of the game, man. Knowledge of the game. … I got lucky,” Fielder said of that play this morning.

TIGERS (career numbers off Kluber)

  1. Austin Jackson, CF (2-for-5, walk, 2 K’s)
  2. Torii Hunter, RF (2-for-6, K)
  3. Miguel Cabrera, 3B (5-for-12, 2 HR, walk, 3 K’s)
  4. Prince Fielder, DH or 1B (2-for-10, HR, 3 K’s)
  5. Victor Martinez, 1B or DH (3-for-6, walk)
  6. Jhonny Peralta, SS (5-for-10, walk, 2 K’s)
  7. Andy Dirks, LF (3-for-14, HR, 4 K’s)
  8. Alex Avila, C (2-for-10, walk, 3 K’s)
  9. Ramon Santiago, 2B (1-for-1)

P: Doug Fister

INDIANS (career numbers off Fister)

  1. Michael Bourn, CF
  2. Asdrubal Cabrera, SS (8-for-35, 2 walks, 8 K’s)
  3. Jason Kipnis, 2B (6-for-17, 2 K’s)
  4. Nick Swisher, 1B (3-for-16, HR, 2 walks, 3 K’s)
  5. Michael Brantley, LF (7-for-25, HR, walk, 4 K’s)
  6. Carlos Santana, C (4-for-24, 2 walks, 5 K’s)
  7. Mark Reynolds, DH (3-for-10, HR, 2 K’s)
  8. Lonnie Chisenhall, 3B (0-for-10, K)
  9. Drew Stubbs, RF

P: Corey Kluber

the dual lineups do raise the question of whether Fielder or Martinez is better defensively at 1b.

Oh goodness, let get Fielder used to being a DH.

I think Victor is more consistent at 1st than Prince. Prince can have games where he couldn’t catch a cold and others where he makes specatacular, surprising plays. Victor is a steady eddy who can pick it, and bail out his infielders.

Jeez Fister……..really what is wrong with you? Two two out walks and a double and a 2 run homer. What a joke. He needs to get it together. He was ahead of most of those batters and as usual cant put anybody away. Dude needs to change something up.

I’ve said this before–if they had to trade somebody to get Smyly into the rotation, it should be Fister.
Fister is a good pitcher but he also is very hittable when he’s off. And he has been off as much as on this year.

Fister 6 runs last time out, Tigers won 7-6. I’m not sure he can always count on this team to bail him out. Down today 4-1 already.

Does anyonr else think Dirks should have caught that Brantley double? Santiago looked outmatched on that at-bat. I still think they can get to Kluber but will it be enough?

He was playing shallow because supposedly Brantly has no power. Not saying I’m not going to pay attention at all to the game at this point but might pay less.

Well ump……screwed that up and then Fister gave him a cookie. Not a fan of this guys zone…it’s cost us.

Inconsistent for sure. Ramon got called out on a swingback and Chisenhall didn’t.
Stuff happens. Gotta overcome.
Kluber looks like he’s gonna give us trouble.

I stepped away here for awhile. Difficult to watch an umpire fail so miserably behind the plate. I estimate 70% of umpires can’t call balls and strikes with any consistent accuracy.
When Fister began to struggle, I thought that Jeff Jones has always got a project, doesn’t he? Never a dull moment.

I wouldn’t trade Fister based on a few bad performances. Tweaking is in order, though.

All the umpires mistakes today benefiting the Indians unfortunately. Bats taking the day off appearently. Klubers not this good…and his buddy Holbrook is helping him out.

My Tiger All Stars:
And Benoit.
Fielder – no way. JV – not quite.
Hunter – might be tempted to call this honorary but looking at other outfielders in the AL he compares very favourable. not a lot of hitting from outfielders this year.
I think we might have gotten carried away with Alex’s return from the DL. He’s back to normal now.
Fielder looks awful.
I totally disagree with all the fuss about him making a smart play yesterday on the DP.
All the talk about experience is fluff.
He flubbed an easy sof liner by taking his eye off the ball.
He was as stunned as anyone else on the field when he picked the ball up. he tagged the runner (c’mon what else would anyone do?), and then only stepped on the bag because he had nothing else to do when the hitter gave up running down the line. It was purely a circumstantial event and had nothing to dow with baseball smarts.

I think since Dustin Pedroia screwed up the same 2 weeks ago he payed attention.

Quickly and quietly…….back to that.

Take a look at the replay GK.How long does it take for Prince to put a tag on then step on the bag?
If you know what you are doing you do one then the other bang-bang. Not the way it happened. Also look at his face. he was as confused as the base runner was.

Maybe someone was yelling at him from the dugout

Now 3 good innings for Fister but high pitch count and the hitters’ no-comeback stats are closing in.

Too late. Fisters got to start pitching in the first inning.

Well Dirks is the last hope… in the 6th

Kluber is just too much of a pitcher for them.

Trade Fister back to the Mariners then. I’m sure they’d be happy to have him, then they could release Jeremy Bonderman. Geez, people do get in slumps sometimes, pitchers too! He’ll probably come out of it soon. I can’t believe people want to trade him already.

Not me…..but he’s otta start doing better. First couple months he was pitching very well but these yahoos stopped hitting on the days he pitched. You wonder if the stress of not getting any run support for so long has taken its toll.

I wonder if it might have! He never had run support in Seattle either. Hopefully he can figure out what’s wrong and correct it soon, like before his next start.

So forget what I said about Reed not getting much work. I forgot who the manager of this outfit is. Why is Reed in the game?

I did not read him to say they should trade Fister, but I do agree that in the off season if you need to trade a starter to open up a spot for Smyly. Fister would be my choice. Porcello has more upside.

You have to face facts. Smyly is languising in the pen. Porcello is younger than Fister and throws harder. Max Anibal and JV are mainstays. Someone has to go. Fister is the logical choice. I love the guy. He’s a bulldog. But he has limitations, he is getting older, he is getting hit.
We need Smyly in the roation next year. Absdolutely.
Fielder is a bigger disappointment to me than Avila. I didn’t expect more from Avila after last year.
Fielder is not hitting in the clutch. Lots of RBIs but let’s analyze that. he has 3 good hitters up ahead of him.
does not deserve to be at that All Star game.

Fielder disappointed me last year too….he doesn’t seem to come up with the clutch hit very often or at least not what I thought we were getting.

That’ does make sense, about Fister & Porcello I mean. And definitely Prince Fielder doesn’t belong in the All-Star game.

Great–Pestano & Perez. They usually shut us down.

Didn’t see that coming…..especially after the inning before. So win or lose they showed me something.

Great niw Q can’t throw a strike. And now a homerun from a guy who doesnt get em. Well tgat was fun fir 3 minutes.

Why Q and not Smyly?????

Well…Q struck out the side the other day. Just because heidnt come through doesn’t make it a bad decision. What I have a problem with is that after he wasnt able to find the strike zone neither Jones or Avila thought it was a good idea to walk their butts out to the mound to calm him down or at least slw him down,

look at their stats – drew has been not so great lately and Q has been lights out. Why always question the call?

I cringe everytime Q comes in to pitch, he is so unpredictable. Not a fan of his at all. I hope the Tigers can come back again and take this game.

Brantley is not a power hitter? Now the bottom 4 in the Tigers’ lineup has to come back in the 9th inning?

Brantly is a power hitter against the Tigers. It was actually dumb of Leyland not to have Smyly come out for the 8th in a tie game.
I like Q, but if you pitch him and he walks the laeadoff hitter you HAVE to take him out. Otherwise you will get the same from him the next time out.
He is the kind of guy that has to be taught a lesson.
Besides all that—it was an absolute no-brainer to have Smyly in there against that part of the lineup at that time in the game.
Another example of no managing the bull pen properly.

Alburquerque is an all or nothing guy. It’s easy to spot almost immediately from watching his motion into his release point. I wanted to take him out after three pitches. I realize that would be unlikely in real life, but three pitches was all I needed to see. On the decision to use him there in the 8th, I can see that. It was still a tie game so I hold back on Smyly for an inning.

Hitters too impatient against Kluber but still showing life. Questionable bullpen usage. Get the game tomorrow night and it’s all good.

I don’t see it that way at all. Q is fine in the 7th with a lead.
Smyly is your LHP for the 8th inning. Good hitters coming up that inning. Smyly does not walk guys much. Smyly can actually pitch more than 1 inning if you need him to.Q is a crap shoot.
Can’t wait around for extra innings. We all know how that story goes for us anyway.

Yeah, I think you’re right. It bothered me that Leyland seemed to be managing from the perspective that “this is the game we’re supposed to lose.” He went straight to the bottom of the bullpen in a 3 run game late.

2013 is the year that will go down as the sensless year that Smyly iwas wasted.

Tough day for Dirks, Peralta and Vmart.
I would imagine we’ll see 2E tomorrow in left. Pena behind the plate. (BTW, Garcia doing very well down on the farm.)
VMart had a good game defensively at 1st.
Geez-i wish this team had some speed. Even AJ doesn’t run. Does not seem to want to ever become a ‘base-stealer”.
Looking forward to Hernan Perez.
Avila is not throwing anybody out anymore.
Any word on Omar?

Heard he was moving better on the ankle today.

AJ seems too concerned about not getting his uniform dirty. No base stealing where he might have to slide. No diving in the outfield. Seems I remember Granderson being the same way a bit. Maybe it’s Leyland waiting for the 3-run homer.

My computer crashed…..again, so I couldn’t comment, but I sure wanted to. Have to give Torii some big props. He’s been in beast mode lately. As far as I’m concerned, there is one Tiger, in my opinion, who should be an all-star and that Tiger is Austin Jackson. Every team needs a great centerfielder and we have one. Go Tigers!!!

Just because a decision is made and a player doesn’t perform the way you had hoped (Q) doesn’t make it wrong decision. Since he came back on 6/21 until today he’d pitched in 7 games (6.2 innings) Given up 1 hit, struck out 10 walked 6 and 0 earned runs. Really was it such a horrible decision. Smyly in his last 7 games has given up 7 hits two walks and 3 runs, he while he’s been great has had blunders too. My problem is when it started to go sideways today neither Avila or Jones thought it a god idea to get off their butts and go out to the mound to slow it down. Again just because a decision don’t work out doesn’t make it wrong.
This games from the start was a long shot..because Fister was off again. Hitters didn’t show up till late and the umpire seemed to have a soft spot for the Indians.

Hitters were 4 for 13 with runners in scoring position and stranded 11. Fister gave up 6 in 6 innings, but it’s Leylands fault for putting in a guy who hadn’t given up a run in 7 innings.

Avi hit or he cycle today.

1. Getting his off of Joe S. and Vinnie P.
2. Coming back to tie the. Game in the late innings. That hasn’t,t happened much lately.
3. The Hunter HR. Torii had had no prior success off of Vinnie P.

Kudos to Miggie and Torii. Two really bad starts from Doug. . I,m surprised he didn’t,y catch at least one loss of the two starts. Rest of the guys found themselves in the hole all evening. We have problems with Klueber. Hope max can finish off a good road adventure. Good morning all.

was up north this weekend. sure had a great time listening to the team put up runs and win games on the road. the past 8 games have been a major turn around. Besides the obvious here are a few things to note: .923 OPS by Vmart the past 7 days, .755/.745OPS by Alex/Andy the past 7 days, Rondon since june 30: 2.2IP, 1H, 0ER, 1BB, 3SO.

not to mention of course, Torii’s 1.248 OPS and 11RBIs in july.
Jhonny looks to be coming off his amazing April, May and June…..with a .540 OPS in july. Heck Ramon is hitting better than that in July with a .596OPS. And for that matter: well done Ramon! Way to grab an opportunity by the ears.
Lastly, Verlander looks to have turned a page.

Big game tonight. Bigger for the Tribe mind you. If they are able to hand Max his 1st loss they stay within immediate striking distance but more importantly, they build a lot of momentum and confidence. A disaster of a home series for them becomes palatable.
Max needs to get Brantly and Kipnis very uncomfortable at the plate. If he needs to cone one of them, so be it. (Ok, not “cone” but “hip”.)
It is a big series for the Tigers in sending a message that they know how to win when they have to. That they are a dominant team and not one with a lack of identity.
They have been playing good ball lately. There are still concerns with our LHB (Avila, Fielder and Dirks) that need to be rectified but contributions in the lineup are coming from more than the #3 spot now.
If I am Jim Leyland I find away to send a subtle message to the Prince. Something like, “Hey, it looks like you are a little tired out there, I think I need to get you off your feet more”. Maybe Prince will take the cue and actually start hitting the ball as we all know he does NOT want to DH.
I have been very discouraged, actually angry, about his performance this year. I think Prince needs to be on a team where he is “The Man”.
Rich, I think you are absolutely right about how JL managed yesterday. Your comment about how he was managing as though this was the game they were supposed to drop in this series was very interesting.

Alburquerque was going to have to pitch in the game even if Smyly pitched the 8th. I think if the team was going to win the game Al would’ve had to pitch 2 innings. Francona would’ve used Perez for the 9th & 10th, Tigers rarely ever score off him. So that means getting it to the 11th. The way it worked out if Smyly pitches the 8th and Al comes in for the 9th and blows it you’ve wasted Smyly and he’s out for the next game having pitched 2 in a row. Max is going to give you a better chance to win so its “live for another day”

This could go on forever since the obvious follow up question is why did Smyly pitch Saturday in a 9-2 ballgame?

Now I can get behind why was Smyly pitching the night before…but I don’t think that pitching Al was a mistake simply because he wasn’t able to do his job.
