Fourth of July lineups: Tigers at Blue Jays

Canada Day 044

Happy Fourth of July — or, as they know it here in Toronto, Thursday (the photo above is actually from Toronto’s Canada Day fireworks Sunday night). It’s actually Country Music Night at Rogers Centre tonight, which is neither an American nor a Canadian thing.

As expected, neither Miguel Cabrera nor Omar Infante are in the lineup. Torii Hunter moves down to the third spot, with Andy Dirks filling the second hole. Alex Avila moves up to seventh in the order ahead of Ramon Santiago and Don Kelly.

Cabrera is available to pinch-hit. I got the sense that Jim Leyland doesn’t want him running a whole lot, but with Infante out and both Kelly and Santiago starting, the only pinch-running option is Avisail Garcia. Given his struggles at the plate, it might actually make more sense to do that with him than to send him up to hit.

The bullpen is thin, too, with both Joaquin Benoit and Drew Smyly on rest tonight. Don’t be surprised if Phil Coke ends up covering an inning along with Al Alburquerque. A deep outing from Justin Verlander migth take care of that, though.

“The way I look at this game is this: If our bullpen is a factor early, we probably lost,” Leyland said.

My Beat the Streak legend ended with Cabrera last night, so it’s back to square one tonight. I played the matchups against Esmil Rogers and doubled down with Hunter and Fielder tonight.

Yikes.
Miggy, Omar, Benoit and Smyly unavailable! They are the 4 top performers on this season.(excluding our rotation).

Scary ain’t it?

“To be honest with you, the sooner (Garcia) gets down there, the better — for him,” manager Jim Leyland said. “That doesn’t mean we’re down on him because we’re not…”
Send him back and call Worth then. Infante wont be back soon

Beautiful picture, Jason. Never been to Toronto, but have always heard folks rave about it. Go Tigers!!!!!!!!!!
.
Yea, how is Worth doing?
.
I like Avi, but he needs some work. Go Tigers!!!!

Hit well in June. Back to below 200 in July

too bad.

His glove is above average and they need that until Infante can play again

that’s true, but how long do they anticipate Omar being out?

Infante was removed from the game and required assistance as he walked off the field. Tigers manager Jim Leyland said there’s still no timetable for his return.

“There’s no structural damage or no knee problem,” Leyland said. “It appears to be a bruise, but those can get pretty sore and can linger for a while.”
At Mlive

Again, I took the garbage out and just noticed we have 2 runs. Missed the whole thing.

Dirks double:

The Tigers got their hitting shoes on.

Bad running there.

There goes the no-no.

Brandon Lyon DFA. Reunion time?

Do we need another project?

He was not that bad this year.( He was DFA to avoid paying him) . He could be a fit for the 7th

I’d much rather see Hernan Perez than Danny Worth. Perez can run. On this team–that is huge.
JV throwing well. Has to be careful with his fastball now.

Bautista is “crying.”

Just talked to Tuiasosopo after the game … feels fine. If it’s his choice, he will rejoin #Tigers in Cleveland tomorrow (Friday).

https://twitter.com/jwagnerblade

Cool! He’s been missed.

102 pitches. One of his best games of the season.. But 7-0 Let him until he allows another hit or reach 110? I would call the bullpen

Jason:
“Hard to tell from this angle, but I didn’t notice Verlander shaking hands on way into dugout. With Benoit/Smyly off, he might get the 8th.”

Mercy, Ajax. Tigers putting on their own fireworks tonight!

2E will improve the team when he gets back. As much potential as AVI has he is struggling and needs to regain his swing, his reps and his confidence.
I have been very impressed with JV today. He has not got fastball happy and has not slipped into predictable behaviour on the mound.
If I was Leyland I would take him out after the7th. Let him leave with a shutout and a good taste in his mouth.
Fabulous that the offense responded with Miggy and Omar out of the lineup. They did all the right things today with that and Benoit and Smyly unavailable. Couldn’t ask for more.
Time to throw Downs and Coke.

You know, I did not have any plans for today and just wanted my Tigers to win. Just a very impressive showing tonight by both pitching and offense.

They just showed the replay of Verlander after pitching his no-hitter in Toronto and there was Scott Sizemore in the celebration. That guy has had the worst luck with injuries.

Coke pitches so much better in blow outs than high pressure situations.

Just a blowout.

There goes the shutout.

Cleveland next

Just a great game. Very enjoyable. Everybody stepped up with their hitting except Avila who gave us the big one last night. Nobody had that attitude of “let Miggy do it.” They will need that hitting in Cleveland especially with their #4, #5, #3 starters. Or is Sanchez coming back?
.
Toronto obviously needs a starter. Would the Tigers be a good trade partner? They could use another relief pitcher and a LH hitter. But NOT Rasmus. Maybe Lyon would come back too. Was there any Toronto relief pitcher worth going after?

The very expensive Janssen

JV kept the game in front of him today. He kept his emotional cool, and pitched his est game in a long time. Miggy got some needed rest, and we get a 3-4 series. Maybe wer’e finally coming out of the grind. I think we take 3-4 from Cleveland, if we get Omar back by Saturday:

1. 8-9-1 goes 9-14. The fill in guys step up and do an admirable job. Kelly scores three runs.
2. Lead off guy scores 4 runs and drives in three; what a winning formula.
3. Five starters have RBI’s in the game. This is what we’ve been lookin’ for all year.
And it was done with Miggy getting the day off.

Kudos: Ajax, Torii, Don, Ramon,Andy, JV; let’s even throw in one for Phil. The Cleveland series ends the half. Time to blow some smoke at the Tribe. Anabel back on Saturday. Good night all!

Garcia optioned.

That was the most enjoyable and stress free game I have attended in along time. JV was a pitcher tonight. He pitched to contact early and his pitch count was as good as it has been all year. Ajax was raking tonight and DK was a great shot in the arm.
.
Go Tigers !!!!!!!!! On to Cleveland. See you next season, boys.

Good to see the Tigers play with some passion, as this is something the fans have waited all season for. These situations, such as Procello, Cabby, and Infante have a way of bringing a team together. Let’s hope they can roll off more wins!

Good night for baseball but a bad night for getting in many comments. 4th of July.
Somehow not surprising that the offense woke up when Miggy wasn’t there to do it all for them. “Baseball is a funny game.”

Nice to see the whole team picking up for the guys who had been producing and could not play. Went to the Hens game on Wednesday – they lost again – boy are they having one stinker of a season. They run a lot in triple A – oddly enough they had someone attempt to steal 2nd base twice in a row and both guys got thrown out – such a contrast from the big leagues. Hoiday was back catching and 2E was playing, so that was fun to see him – he seemed good when we were there and I see now ready to rejoin the team. We were about 8 rows behind the Hens dugout, and midway through the game saw Papa standing at he top step watching the game with Villarreal. I was screaming for him to get a photo but only got the back of his head. He did not pitch but did warm up a few times, apparently they will look to him as their closer now. Danny Worth just won’t ever make it in my mind – his stats are not impressive at all. Seems like a good guy but I just don’t see it. Way to win the series boys, and kudos to Verlander for pitching a heck of a game last night.

Runs, runs, runs. That’s what it is all about, right?? We rank in the top ten in MLB in both runs scored and runs allowed. Our offense is second with 423 runs scored while our pitching holds down ninth place after allowing 342 runs. How many other teams rank top ten in both stats?? Just two. The St. Louis Cardinals and Oakland As do. St. Louis hold down third place in both stats while the As are eighth in scoring and tenth in runs allowed. Last year the As and Os were both considered surprise playoff contenders. Not anymore. Beware both of these two AL teams. And of course, those Cards from the NL.

Cabrera is back. Kelly in RF. Santiago playing 2B

Wishful thinking was to expect 2E there.

Is Masterson the one that Kelly hits well?

I got it. 7-19 with a homer.

Can’t get my baseballreference.com matchup thing to work but I got the numbers from Gameday.

True ,but the replaced Hunter is 10 for 26.

Rich, espn.com has decent matchup stats.
In case Jason can’t post.
1. Austin Jackson, CF
2. Andy Dirks, LF
3. Miguel Cabrera, 3B
4. Prince Fielder, 1B
5. Victor Martinez, DH
6. Jhonny Peralta, SS
7. Don Kelly, RF
8. Alex Avila, C
9. Ramon Santiago, 2B

not terribly exicited about 7-8-9. worked yesterday though.

Jhonny is 1 for 15. And Santiago 1 for 14 . Having only one of them was a better option. Kelly could play 2B
And 2E is hitting 9 for 25 with 2 HR vs RHP

Ya I agree……..

It’s early July, the season is more than half over, and we have a 4-game series for first place. This is what it’s all about. Enjoy it, everyone.
p.s. John Adams is locked in my trunk. Hope he doesn’t escape.

Nice Ramon! Nice clutch 2 out hit!

Well, Santiago wants playing time

Martinez avg is slowly going up. His OBP for june was already over 300

Geez, this is the first sellout in 2 years for the Indians.

Boy as good as Ajax has looked lately his at bats tonight not so much.

Big hits!!!!!!!!!!

Nice 5th inning. Boys are in a grove like they were in the 1st month.

RICH….I guess John Adams escaped your trunk????

I went outside in the 5th inning and, sure enough, trunk empty. He’s slippery, that one.

Something clicked and the team is on

They did an excellent job of grinding down Masterson. Sometimes this ballclub is so good.

You said it Eltigre…….how is this the same team?

Geez, nothing to complain about! Go Tigers!!!!

Pretty to watch.
Dirks, Kelly, Ramon and Vmart picking up Fielder and Avila.
Dirks has upped his game and is looking inspired almost.
Porcello did a nice job of subduing the dangerous LHB of the Tribe.
Miggy got robbed twice today. Lookout tomorrow- he might figure he needs to go yard now!
I just don’t know what to think about Prince. He gets his hits, mostly harmless, and finds his way on but his clutch at bats and his average are falling while his homers are 8th among MLB first sackers. Not even in the top 10 for average.
Worries me.
VMart suddenly is squaring up almost all the time.
Q showed what he can do again. JL needs to use him again against the Indians. You know how we used to feel when they would bring in Pistano and Perez?
That’s the way they will feel when Q comes in. Rondon is impressive but he still has to refine his command.
We have been treated the last few days. Many thanks to Ramon and Kelly for their contributions.
Pretty to watch.
