Sunday’s lineups: Tigers at Rays

Days off for Brayan Pena and Jhonny Peralta on the getaway day. Considering the Tigers will be flying to Toronto tonight for a day game tomorrow, the rest makes sense. Considering Peralta is 1-for-8 with four strikeouts against Rays starter Jeremy Hellickson, it makes a little more sense.

Again, I’m not covering the team this weekend, so I don’t know what’s going to happen today after the rhetoric from last night.

I thought long and hard about my Beat the Streak pick today, both because of Austin Jackson’s success in day games this year, his numbers off Hellickson and the ability of the Rays to get Miguel Cabrera out of his game in that last at-bat. But it’s tough to go against Cabrera when he’s motivated. Thus, the 14-game streak is on the line.

I love Miggy I wouldn’t exchange him for anybody…..but I just spent a few minutes looking at his splits his late and close batting average this year is .143, which is well well below anything he has done as a Tiger, never been below .300 before. It is not his norm. He’s great he just hasn’t been good in these situations this year.

Fielder .262
Hunter .086
Jackson .261
Vmart .152
2e .300
Santiago .200
Kelly .188
Infante .281
Dirks .211
Avila .200
Pena .238

I know, but look at the number of BB: 11 Almost 1/4 of his PA.

Unfortunately the model exists from Boston and Ted Williams — too great for the team he’s on. 20 left on base is a preposterous situation. Leyland is too stand pat. He needs to move runners, hit and run and probably release Phil Coke — in other words don’t stay with what’s not working — Prince may hem and haw but if he is not overly awesome, I mean the Prince we know and love in the All Star Homerun Derby and the Prince who wow’s me with his passion to play, or Victor, which is like watching someone die but in his death throes he is third in RBI’s on the team, which gets me to the real problem — not being able to win, not believing in themselves, not getting the clutch hit, the winning play. The season is long, so okay, maybe they’ll slide in like they’ve done the past few years and take it all — but my guess is the chemistry ain’t there, and someone or something must change. Maybe get Ilich out of the office and back at the pizza board, or actually let Leyland smoke his Malboro Golds and be banished for awhile, a year or two. Anyway, el Tigres need a pick me up, maybe a Verlander stretch run starting now, or a big trade, Porcello — although I would worry, but then again maybe not, lets remember Cameron Maybin or the guy — name escapes me — they traded to Dombrowski’s old boss for Anibel and Omar, which seemed like guys you should hold on to, but back to the thought — Porcello for a bullpen!!!!! and a clutch — more than Miggy — player, the guy who really has never done anything at all but finds himself wanted and needed — no not Ryan Rayburn or Jose Valverde — someone like the Giants or Yankees or other teams when they win do. Raise your hand if you’re out there, and wave it hard at Dombrowski. Something must change only because it is such a shame — as in Boston with Williams and Detroit with Kaline — to let such talent go to waste.

Good for Holaday. Good job, so far, today. Leland is getting himself worked up. Might get tossed if umps keep squeezing Rick. Go Tigers!!!

Okay sorry guys I know how you hate this but this strike zone so far is crap…..2 pitches to Johnson not called strikes. Then he has th nerve to call that one a strike on Santiago? That’s crap!

Just awful. Have to agree.

What a terrible call on what was clearly ball four to Santiago. It should be 1-1 now after Holladay stroked his double.

Landed right in the water.

Miggy seems to love having Avi around.

Rays announcers have been dogging Cabera, Leyland and Porcello since the pre-game show, nonstop. Orestes Destrade said he played with a player 10x better than Cabrera in Bonds. He accused the Tigers of babying and protecting Cabrera. They won’t let it go, and started ever harder after Cabrera’s HR.

A big whatever to Rays announcers……glad he’s proud of playing and giving props to a guy that cheated to pump up his stats. Bonds helped ruin baseball for a long time

Maybe if Fielder hustled he would be more deserving of an All-Star vote. PrimaDonna!

Another game of not the good Porcello, it seems.

Quickly and quietly……….Miguel, Biggy and Martinez.

Bases loaded and absolutely nothing………not one freaking run……these guys are incredible….and not in a good way. Late innings they got nothing.

Wow, bases loaded, no outs, and they can’t get a run in. Pathetic.

They’ve become gun shy on every sacrifice fly. Dirks is supposed to be one of the faster runners on the team. He would have scored. AJ has never been any good with RISP. Why was Hunter bunting? Miserable, just miserable. Soon out of first place?

They’ll be tied after today…….

And yet another example why Phil should not be pitching to righties.

GK, you beat me to it.

Quality clutch at bats by 3-4 in the Tigers line up there in the 8th. Prince’s was a thing of beauty. At least Martinez put up fight.

No relieve pitching. Can not hit in clutch. Prince needs to go back to the big M. Trade Miggy, and Martinez for anyone who can hit or pitch in the clutch.

I know you are entitled to your opinion but come on trade Miggy. Just shake my head.

The Scott killer? 0 for 2

That is better

Meanwhile Andy just stands there and does nothing.

Trade Miggy????? That is crazy.

Argh!!!!!! These guys just don’t have it……mojo or whatever you want to call it. Pretty sad with all the money Mr Illitch ha given to them.

Did I detect a look of disgust on Miggy’s face? No one else is hitting or hitting in a clutch situation. He can’t get 4 hits in every game. He can’t hit a HR in every game. Somebody else has to step up. I don’t know who is the answer. V-mart has almost never come around. Garcia sits on the bench losing whatever he did have. How can you not have Coke pitch against a RHB sometimes? Pull a Farnsworth like Maddon did? Rondon did better today. But now Cleveland has caught them. They have to go to Toronto and Cleveland on this trip. Look out below?

Omg I just heard them say on the post game…this team is 3-20 when trailing after 6. That kinda sums it all up doesn’t it?

knew the game was over after we left them loaded. told my friend we’d somehow find a way to score no runs. i’m not joking. Gk, that stat does sum it up – dead last in offense in the late innings. Rondon – he did better today – Coke too. Porcello pitched good enough for this lineup. Obviously today what lost the game was 1-for-10 with RISP (8 LOB), Jackson kinda blew it in the top of the 3rd with man on 2nd 2-0 count he managed to strike out, and then he had an unlucky line drive fielders choice in the 7th. Torii could have ripped it open but he popped out to leave ’em loaded.
How do you motivate Torii and Prince? Vmart’s injury gives him a pass at this point. Alex and Dirks have no REAL track record to be good at this level. AJ is amazing – Jhonny’s balls found holes – no complains with omar.

don’t get me wrong neither torii nor prince have been bad this year.
however look at this: Torii has an 1.049OPS in the 1-3 innings, .686OPS 4-6 and .405 7-9. High leverage situations .521OPS. .692OPS with RISP. .683OPS in june.
Prince of course is very important to the offense, when we win he hits .987OPS and when we lose he hits .686OPS. And as you guessed in the past 14 he’s batted badly at .615OPS albeit in June he hit .817OPS (good not great). Guess what he bats in “late and close” games? .661OPS. Not to dog him too much because 1.057OPS with 2 outs RISP, .912OPS with RISP and against teams with a winning percentage >.500 he bats .951OPS (instead of .716OPS).

Wagner:” Alex Avila 2-for-4 & hitting ball hard.”

Is Leon Durham still the hitting coach at Toledo? Seems like he gets many players hitting better. Then they come back to SOC and Lloyd and fall right back into bad habits. Seems a little too coincidental, don’t you think?

No, big league pitchers are the best. A hitting coach can make suggestions and spot problems, but the player has to execute. I think Jones is one of the best pitching coaches in the game, he cannot keep a pitcher from walking a batter. VMart seems to be swinging at a lot more pitches out of the zone. He is still working his way back and hopefully he gets all the way back soon.

you are 100% correct Illinoifan. how long can ownership let this go? a field full of all-stars, multiple MVP’s and 3 or maybe even 4 ace’s on this roster, and they’re 6 games over .500. that would be good for 4th place in the NL Central. best lineup and best rotation in the majors. how long do they go before they look at the coaching staff. combination of Mclendon ruining swings, leyland’s shameful bullpen management, brookens waving guys around third when the ball is already coming home, and lamont sitting there with that lost look in his face. is it because of the crappy division we are in, so they think its just good enough to get by? they can’t hold a lead, and they can’t comeback from a deficit. there has to be a point when they say, ok, we’ve provided you with everything we possibly can, and now its time we analyze the coaching staff. Leyland can be a GREAT coach, and still is at times. remember in his first year, Leyland made EVERY visit to the mound, he was really coaching back then, and it showed. since then, he just hires his cronies and its just isnt working anymore.

I do think it appropiate to question Leyland. He has been at the helm of a team (and it has always been a pretty strong roster) that is unprepared to handle the pressures of centre stage. The 1st series against St Louis was poorly managed. The rookie Verlander starting and the best pitcher in baseball at the time (Kenny Rogers) waiting for his turn and being assure of 2 starts at Max in a long series.
Last year Leyland had the long wait before the Series with a very beatable Giant squad and his boys were again not ready to play ball. They hit pretty much like they did last night (well not even that well).
Leyland does not believe in chemistry. Well it well could be we just don’t have the right chemist.

missed my three things over the weekend. Fighting low blood platelets now. I worry about our team. Hope to be home we’d. Keep on blogging.

You’re not in hospital are you Greg?

In your honour Greg:
1. Porcello Beaning Zobrist
2. Miggy not harming any animals in the tank
3. Jose Valverde did not pitch for us.
