Tuesday’s lineups: Tigers vs. Angels

A LOT of struggles in the past from Detroit’s right-handed hitters against Angels lefty C.J. Wilson. Torii Hunter and Miguel Cabrera are exceptions, but Detroit’s middle infielders are a combined 6-for-49 against him. Oddly enough, Prince Fielder is 5-for-9 off him.

I stuck with Cabrera tonight for Beat the Streak as I try to reach double digits for the first time. You can check out the rest of MLB.com’s beat writers’ picks, including leader Steve Gilbert, here.

One thing to watch for Rick Porcello tonight, other than the defense making plays on ground balls behind him, is how he uses the curveball. He didn’t have it going in Anaheim back in April, hung one to Mike Trout and paid dearly for it. If there’s one significant difference in how Porcello could approach the Halos this time, it’s that.

For those of you who live out of town, tonight’s game is the Free Game of the Day on MLB.TV.

jason why the tarp:?

Garcia has shown flashes of brilliance, but he is not ready. Garcia needs Toledo to develop. Hope he stays with the organization.

Miggy has been whiffing a bit at those high hard and away fastballs lately. Holaday acquitting himself rather well so far. Garcia will need to pick up his game or he will be spending some more time in Ohio very soon.

Holladay looks ok as a receiver. But can he throw anyone out?

I guess not. 0 for 5.

Smart play by Trout to advance to third. He just took away sinkers and breakers in the dirt from RP.

Hey, great play by a Tigers fan to get in the way of Hamilton and give Miggy another hack.

HR! Game ball to the fan?

Fielder 3 for 27. Last 8

getting to Ricky now.
I can smell a big fly coming up.

It has bee ugly for the Prince..
All we can do is wait from him to come around I guess..
He is not doing what he was paid to do that’s for sure.

Crunch time. Wilson came in and shut us completely down after looking extremely vulnerable.
Porcello needs to do the same but they seem to have figured out and his stuff today is very hittable.

Time to call the bullpen

Ugly hits? He is being hit hard

Interesting. Angels feared Hunter’s arm and Pujols stayed at 3B.

I meant Prince’s hitting has been ugly.
Porcello was finished an inning ago.. You can tell by just looking at him.
Tigers look like crap right now. This one is over. You can put it on the board.

This time Torii was tested. Holladay bailed. That was all on him . He took his eye off the ball.

Tigers need a catcher, a LF (maybe?) and a closer. And I think VV may still end up doing the job until Rondon is ready.

Well this is a waste of time and money. Porcello was good for a few starts now he’s back to his crappy self. Down is just as sucky. What a freaking joke.

“Darin Downs hadn’t allowed an inherited runner to score since May 1, stranding 9. Allowed 3 tonight.” @beckjason

Oh, what a godawful game.

Downs was brutal but he should have been brought in to pitch to Hamilton.
I’ve always felt that Downs’ numbers have not reflected his abilities. He’s been very fortunate. He is a below average MLB pitcher. Faulk and Hoffman are the guys they need to try out as lefties for that pen..
Putkonen, Reed and Downs are minor league pitchers. Coke should be.
The makeover in the pen is going to be a real challenge for Dombrowski and a lot of it is his own making.

I agee with downs coke and definitely Reed but plutonium has been decent

We really do save some of our worst efforts for the Angels, dont we?.
.
Quite pathetic.

I think it is pretty clear that Porcello should not throw against them anyway. Though JL’s idea of clarity is “un”clear to me.

It was his turn to pitch not s lot can be done about that

Well I am at the game quickly feeling like I’m going to leave …..it doesn’t make me a bad fan either. ……..it makes me realistic and someone who has been up since 4 am. Let’s see if they show any thing here. Then we’ll see.

Downs has been horrid for a bit. About 7.00 in his last 10 counting today. His lack of talent has caught up to him.

5 for last 39. Off course , already open game

VMart making it a little close

How could Reed miss the bag? Like he was playing footsy with it.

Was that a new dance move by Reed at first base?
.
Like I said … Quite pathetic.

And yet another error. ……..why is it that no matter what we play horribly against these idiots? Josh Hamilton who hasn’t been able to get a hit all year sure is happy to be here

Tigers will be lucky to get a single win this series against a struggling team. I guess the value in losing ugly is you see where you need to improve. Pretty obvious holes…

That said, the Angel BP is just horrible.

When will be Alex ready?

We need a MLB catcher and Alex has defined himself as anything but.

Horrible throw again by Holladay on SB. And Garcia simply sucked on his throw to the plate.

Pitching other than scherzer and Alvarez has been hideous. Pen icky

In the car now. …Dan and Jim talking about how we s the only team that doesn’t hit and beat up on Richards.

Reed is out of gas . Tired legs and tired arm.

Great, another basehit.

Well. someone else is now in. Putkonen.

You know your pitching is horrible when josh Hamilton who will whiff at anything out of the zone is on base 4 times. Pretty sad. Pretty disgusted.

Now a 6th error…your not only getting beat up by a crappy team…..now your just looking stupid with all these errors. Better show up ready to play tomorrow cause they sure didn’t tonight.

Didn’t realize Avila has played three games in Toledo 1 hit and 2 walks in 12 AB’s. he can’t do any better against AAA pitching.

1. Miggy’s opposite field HR.
2. Rick’s first inning.
3 Cleveland lost too. I liked that about our fiasco.

Disgusted.

Holaday is supposed to be good in defense. One bad game, it not enough to dismiss him.He had to catch the throw form Hunterlike areal 1B had the throw from Miguel
They have Dirks and 2E for LF
What they really need is the cleanup hitter to hit in close games:5 in 31 during the home-stand.
Porcello is not a fir for this team. Only Jackson and Infante provide good defense for him.
The veterans and well paid player are to blame not the rookies and bench players

The best part of tonight’s game was I didn’t see it! Anybody remember the 70s-80s band Heart? I’ve wanted to see them for like forever and they played a concert ten miles from my house. Great night. Two ladies in my age range rockin’ the house.

You saw the better show, Rich, because the Tigers sure didn’t play with “Heart”

One of my favorites bands: “These dreams”,”All I Wanna Do Is Make Love to You” , “Alone” are part of the mixes that i carry on my car

This may be the worst game I have seen this team play. Certainly one of the worst.
And putting Downs, Reed and Putkonen in this farce seems very appropriate. Neither of them should be on this 25 man roster.

I did see it. Well most of it. Second game of the year. First game was Angels 10 Tigers 0. Remember that one?? Now Angels 14 Tigers 8. Snowman inning did us in but good. That will be my final Angels vs. Tigers game this season!! No one had a good game for us. Absolutely, no one. Total team effort. Other news. Hens lost 16-3!!! Indians, Royals, and Twins all lost. White Sox pulled their game out in the bottom of the ninth. Inge hit his first homer of the year tonight and carries a .200 ave.
