Thursday’s lineups: Tigers vs. Red Sox

A day after Jim Leyland said he might consider giving Matt Tuiasosopo some starts against right-handers, he’s in the lineup against Red Sox righty John Lackey. Considering Lackey is giving up a .316 average to right-handed hitters compared with .203 to lefties, the matchup makes total sense, not just Tuiasosopo over the slumping Andy Dirks.

Since the subject this morning became managers, here’s an interesting read from another old timer, Davey Johnson. Different words but a familiar refrain.

Tonight it will be the Red Sox vs our Tigers. Red Sox 44 wins. Tigers 39 wins. Red Sox great road warriors. Tigers with one of the best home records in MLB. Both teams 5-5 the last ten games. Both teams lost their last game and alas the Tigers have actually lost TWO in a row for the first time this month. Overall the Bengals are 16-10 in June. What is it game seventy-one?? Many more to follow. No matter what happens we have to play 162. Are these guys tight?? Hey, Verlander see if you can give Kelly a hot foot!!! Go Tigers!!!

The Slumping Andy Dirks needs rehab in Toledo. But I don’t understand why they’re jerking Garcia around. Why bring him up to pinch hit twice and then send him back down again?

uh. where. is. don kelly playing today? he’ll come in the 6th to pinch hit for 2E? Oh, OK I guess….. [sarcasm font]

I hope this is the beginning of Tui garnering a much larger of a role on this team. Dirks has been struggling for too long.

Garcia was always just a place holder this year nothing more. I agree Dirks is slumping. I hope Tui doesn’t get exposed if he plays too much, kinda the same way Boesch was and he never really recovered, because the hitter that Tui has been this year (which is great) isnt what he has been his entire career. That being said I hope we see him in a bit more.

We need someone to start bashing RHP. 2E possibly. I still say Jordan Lennerton and scrap VMart for a while.
Our main LHB against RHP:
Fielder .254 and 8 HR
Dirks .243/4
Martinez.236/5
Kelly .29/3
Avila .197/5

Clearly our LHB have not been punishing RHP at all.
I think VMart may come arond but when? And when he does is it possible to get him to plod further than 2nd base?

where do you want him to work on it? the bench or AAA?

Why not at least elevate Peralta to the 5 hole against LHP?
That might help Prince a bit.
Though I must say that I find Prince the must disappointing Tiger on the team this year. Even more than Avila.
I expected little from VMart and about .230 from Avila.
I expected Prince to out homer Miggy this year. I figured he would approach 40 on the year. He doesn’t look capable of pulling a fly ball any longer.
He has saved some very bad at bats and key strikeouts for the most critical times.
He is the key to the problem of our LHB not doing much damage this year.

I don’t think you can demote a guy like VMart. I think you ask him to provide bench strength and maybe some backup catching (if he can do it physically) or you honour his request to be traded. Which he would probably do.
Pains me to say the above and I hope I am way wrong about this. I just don’t see him returning to the .300, 100 RBI man we hoped for.

Move Jhonny to 5th and Infante to 6th then Victor until he comes out of his slump.

you could if you wanted to. might work. might drop jhonny and infante’s numbers down and victor never comes out of the slump. then fans say ‘oh what a terrible move that was’ ;)

VMart is owed 16 MM or a little more. Of course, he long out of options. There is no way to trade him unless he begins to hit and then why trade him?
His situation is the same of David Ortiz last year, he was not hitting and Francona benched him. He answered how I get started in the bench? A real catch 22
He can´t catch and there is no playing time for him at 1B. But he needs time on the field,he looked comfortable when he played 1b. Being DH is not easy according to the players I have heard talking about that. They say the cant get into the game when DHitting. yes , he did great in 2011 but he was catcher 26 games.
Martinez in wins:327 .363 .487 .850 . in losses:093.161.111.272

BTW: Jhonny´s Babip is 400. His fall will be hard

and of course victors BABIP is equal inthe other direction.

True, we have been saying that for a while but as kathy pointed , he could try to create his luck

it’s just hard to use the logic for one and not the other….very JL-like ya know?

I agree with you about them. Victor line drive % is 19 just below the 21 of 2011. His babip is low, he has been hitting 260 last 28.His plate discipline is good. He will go up and Peralta will go down.
