Saturday’s lineups: Tigers at Twins

Jim Leyland said a few days ago that he planned on giving Torii Hunter the Saturday game off. He didn’t want to do it Wednesday against James Shields, and he sure wasn’t going to do it Friday against Twins lefty Scott Diamond. As promised, Hunter is out of the lineup. Don Kelly takes his place in right field, batting seventh.

The Twins welcome back Trevor Plouffe from the disabled list, but Josh Willingham (2-for-16 off Anibal Sanchez with seven strikeouts and eight walks) is off.

I took a chance with the small sample size and went with Jhonny Peralta on Beat the Streak. Andy Dirks would’ve been the true splits play, in hindsight. You can check out all the picks from MLB.com’s beat folks here.

Quick reminder that tonight’s game is on FOX, not FS Detroit as usual. If you’re stuck in a region getting another game (and there are about five regional games tonight), I wish I could help you. You can follow along online with Gameday, or listen to the broadcast here

Hope Alex Cobb is OK. (liner to head: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8426yhud3zk)

Looked bad………just makes you realize how lucky Doug was last year when he was hit in the head during the World Series.

Quickly and quietly!?

Sanchez can’t throw strikes?

Rust or sore?

Back to normal

donny kelly baby! leadoff double!

OK now alex lets see you get the man home from 3rd – just a nice long sac fly.

what a bum!

Awesome seriously how many have been out at home this year? 8 million?

Kudos to the 10th Man… And forget it Now it is station-to-station with Avila.

What a wasted opportunity! Again!

How was the infield playing?

Bad running by Kelly

how so?

Runner on third. 1B open. one out. You dont break to home until the ball is off the infield. With the single by jackson he scored. Lack of funadamentals

ok fair enough

Might of been the contact play? Don’t know just wondering?

bad route by dirks on that play….got luck to tag out the runner at 2nd

Jhonny!

plouf

Appearently Sanchez isn’t alright?

Injured?

God I hope not?

What was it with Sanchez?? Velocity down??

Hits and more runs boys!

The shoulder, stiffness yet

OMG, he was safe!

Jeez……….you gotta freaking be kidding me! Guess what when that happens the in a game it just seems like its a bad sign! Thanks…another poor call by an umpire…shock of all shocks!

In the second replay, he just missed the plate. This game is not going the Tigers’ way. I’m starting to get mad.
.

I can’t see the game. It looked like Prince was safe?

On first look he looked very safe, but he might a been out. Prince is a crappy slider.

I didn’t think so (re: prince). And I think it is high time darin downs is yanked. C’mon skip do you have absolutely no feel for your pitchers? yikes.

Here we go… Time to get Downs out…..
.
And appearently Immermans pitching for the Nationals who s so unhittable isn’t. Cleveland pounding him now.

3-2 and no one out. I can’t stand JL ball. Probably have to shut it off.

Takes time to get people warmed up…but yes he needs to come out.

Too late now.

Well Darin get get lefties out either I guess. Honestly …I’m not going to kill him because he hasn’t pitched in a while but ya still gotta do better.

When the opposition gets a man on 3rd and nobody out it seems alike a foregone conclusion that they are going to score. When we do it, it’s nail biting time for three outs and a goose egg. Not sure what is wrong with our hitters at those times but we’re not very good at it.
Again, our offense is pretty droopy. a broken bat 2 run single all we have to show for it today.
Without Miggy hitting (and he does look out of sorts) this offense is less than mediocre.

That may be all there is, fans. With AJ not up to par yet, Dirks doing nothing, Miggy’s BA down about 30 points, V-Mart not able to get to .250, Infante dropping below .300, and Avila (groan), who is up to starting a comeback rally? .Downs did well for awhile but then oops.

Well this is pretty much over…this Tigers team hasn’t come back all year…it shocks me since they are supposedly such wonderful hitters yet not one single late inning comeback.

Why not IBB to Mauer?

Agree with you, El Tigre. I thought the same thing. That was the second time Mauer saw Downs today. Was Reed ready to come in to face Doumit?? Second issue. You can’t pitch someone every twelve days and get forty pitches from them.

3 biggest comeback of the season

They just can’t seem to get the win that puts them 10 games over .500. I thought Deduno was a pitcher they had done well against.

2-1 9 something ERA

They have…but remember we are on road and for some reason they aren’t interested it playing on the road.
.
One of the biggest reasons these guys have no comebacks. …with the exception of Benoit. . This pen is way crappy and that’s on Dombrowski. He put this horrible pen together.

Miguel last 10 : 214 11 BB

Scraping off the rust and blowing off the dust didn’t help Downs or Reed. Even Smyly seemed by camping forever in the bullpen.

should have used darin to get a few batters out — not just leave him in there until he fails.

Same MO used with Below

Hate to be contrary, but he didn’t have much of a choice but to try to get a few out of Downs with Sanchez needing to come out so early. When you ave starters that go deep into games and a team that doesn’t score too many runs ..your not going to use your bottom tier pen relief very much. And this team hasn’t had many big leads lately where there have been a lot of garbage innings. IMO

Game again

Or not

Doesn’t look like Reed will be much help. I’d like to see Ortega back. I’d also like to see A2 pitch well enough to get back. Hoffman has done very well down there and Rondon, obviously, has done well. There are some real holes in our pen. I like Downs and he should have been used more but he is a very ordinary pitcher at best. He is not someone that will shut the opposition down. The jury is out on Pukonenen but I feel the seem way about him. Coke? Well he is only here because of his experience and familiarity. He is another pitcher with an inability to dominate hitters. He’s going nowhere because he is a favourite. I accept tthat.
We need pitchers in the pen that can dominate.

Smyly hasn’t been left there to rust….he’s pitched 10 more innings than anyone in the pen at almost 39 innings.

He has been used in low leverage situations or long relief

14 of the 23 games he’s pitched in have been close (within 2-3 runs or tied) when he comes in not garbage innings necessarily.

Bullpen:Royals first and Twins third in ERA in MLB.

It’s pretty disappointing to see the way this club plays on the road. More often than not they play a poor game. They did today.

The Royals already lost. The Nationals have comeback and have a lead in the ninth against the Indians.

I was blacked out tonight. Not going to watch the archive on MLB TV.Sort of kept up with game day. No comments tonight. I’m just so tired of this team’s efforts in road games. Again, a good thing we have Porcello; don’t know if there is a serious problem with Anabel or not. If we don’t win tomorrow, not even .500.

The Tigers have been lucky because no other team in the division can put it together…..so far.

Hopefully Dougie can toss a zero tomorrow. He’s certainly capable of it. Avoid that one bad inning and he’ll be good.
Then if Avila goes Ofer tomorrow he can still still be happy with his performance.

wow that is too true

Half way through June and the Skipper has to be pleased with the bench. Kelly and Tuiasosopo are both over .400 for the month. While Santiago and Pena are both at .250. Good job bench. How’s the team’s record this month?? We’re playing a little over .600 ball. Who’s in the Sunday line up before we head home for the Orioles, Red Sox and Angels?? Alex is 0 for 8 against Walters so let’s give Brayan a chance. Win the series and it’s a .500 road trip. Go Tigers!!!!!

Heard some “talk” about 4 starting pitchers from Detroit are possible for the ASG.
There is no way Fister and Sanchez will make the team..
Max has an outside chance of actually starting the game depending on the next few weeks but Bucholz and Iwakuma may have something to say about that too.
JV makes the team.

I don’t think Leyland would take that many Tigers….would kinda look weird and be weird I think. Bucholz has had some health issues lately and a few skipped starts, although he has been excellent even with the foreign substances he was using on his arm. Iwakuma has been awesome. Truthfully I’m not sure if Verlander deserves it the way he has pitched the last month not including his last outing.
.
Personally I would rather my guys get some time off….but that’s just me!
.
What’s up with Miguel?

“#TIgers Leyland about Sanchez: “The good news is he’s healthy. But he was sluggish getting his rhythm and mechanics back.” Gage

that is great news

ESPN Cy predictor has Scherzer, Verlander and Sanchez as top 10 in the AL:

http://espn.go.com/mlb/features/cyyoung

Anibal remains 7 th in ERA and Scherzer is 14 th and Verlander is 16th

The pitchers are voted by the managers, coaches and players. The manager only pick the starter.

Miguel? probably losing patience for being pitched around specially after plays like the bunt from Hunter that left the 1B open . He said he has to adapt to that but probably he was being polite. Some regression was due anyway

I agree about Miguel that’s what I was thinking….getting pitched around a whole bunch.

Bucholz probably going to DL

AL2: save. 2 innings , 4 SO/2 BB

Avisail 2 for 4 RBI

Worth 2 for 4

Everybody is asking the same , why did he pitch to Mauer?

“good morning – Jim Leyland has already voiced concern for Anibal Sanchez today – no pain, but less velocity” Gage

Alvarez vs Red Sox? Not looking good at all

“three more things: #Tigers Avila hitting .106 in last 22 g, but playing again today, Donnie Kelly was safe at the plate, but Prince wasn’t” Gage

Unbelievable:lineup: Jackson 8, Hunter 9, Cabrera 5, Fielder DH, Martinez 3, Peralta 6, Dirks 7, Infante 4, Avila 2. Fister 1.
Day game after nigh game. He really hates Avila . Is Peña glued to the bench like Laird?

I think the opposite is true. He actually loves Avila. He will use the excuse about his game calling abilities and his relationships with the starters to justify the black hole in the lineup. Avila will get hurt eventually and quite possibly seriously injured.
JL treats him like an old shoe and he simply has trouble writing someone else’s name there. He has visions of 2011 clouding his judgement and figures that Avila will return to form if he gets enough at bats. It could be that 2011 was a “one off”. It is beginning to look like that more and more.
I think the best thing they could do for Alex is to send him down to AAA or even AA to get his confidence back. Right now putting him in the lineup is the worst thing (for Alex) to dl.

We have a saying here: there are loves that kill

ElTigre, what are your thoughts about a guy like Franciso Rodriguez on this team? He is only 31 and do you not think he would repsond positively at this stage of his career on a winning team?

He was a FA during the postseason. signed late like Valverde, same agent btw. He has been pitching like he used to do with the Halos. He does have the winning attitude but I dont know if JL would like him.
His problems with the Mets were only part his fault.

I would not mind seeing him finish the year here for us. He is a Venezuelan and would likely fit in very well. I have always liked his intensity. I think he has something yet to prove and I think he has the arm and the head to do it with.
