Tuesday’s lineups: Tigers vs. Pirates

With the alternating games setup at catcher, Alex Avila gets the start behind the plate against right-hander Jeanmar Gomez (whom the Tigers saw in his Cleveland days). Avila is 2-for-4 with a walk and a strikeout against Gomez, but this could be a big name for him for more than the matchups. The hope is that he shows some progress at the plate. Despite the big RBI bloop single Sunday, he has struck out three times in each of his last two games and is 2-for-29 with 12 strikeouts since May 11.

Miguel Cabrera is 5-for-13 with two home runs off Gomez, by far the best numbers of any Tiger against him. Despite the hitless game yesterday, he’s probably worth sticking with on Beat the Streak. You can check out other MLB.com writers’ picks here.

Work this guy for walks and look for the home run ball. Otherwise, he can be tough.

Oh, Ricky, how about another Texas perfromance?

It has rained in GR all day. Evan, been to Big Star lake many times! Go Tigers!

3 mutual off days between these two teams for the rest of the year.

Weather sucks. Glad the Tigers don’t.

Saw lots of Martin in SoCal. At his worst, much better than anything the Tigers can put up defensivelyand/or offensively. Avila has defined himself. He is a minor leaguerand/or a backup MLB catcher at best.

Well, maybe a platoon guy. But his mechanics are so screwed up offensively it would take him a month of PROPER repetititions to bring his muscle memory to the point he would not defeat himself with the stick. Then he would need to overcome his braincramps from the mental issues.

Martin hit .211 last year and his lifetime average is .05 higher than Alex. Alex has a much higher OPS than Martin. That statement does not show in the stats. Alex is struggling with the bat, he has a reputation as a good signal caller and the pitchers like working with him.

Yes, Martin hit .211 last year. But with 21 HRs. The guy has had years of .282, .295 and.280 with the Dodgers. He has also stolen up to 21 bases in a year and at his worst runs much better than Avila, who is station-to-station. Also, Avila has had only one decent year since coming up in 2009. Outside of his 2011 season, Avila has never played in more than 116 games. In contrast, Martin has had multiple 150 game years. He shows up regularly. No comparison between the 2 players.

And the reason I brought up Martin besides being familiar with him is not because he is great. It is because he is just a journeyman. He shows more vividly how inferior Avila has become.

A personal stat that would be real nice if it improved by 1 or 2 hundred per cent:

Prince Fielder’s career grand slam number(s).

Great point. Why doesn’t JL make that part of his game plan?

We had Leyland. You’ve had Leyland. He stinks. I’ll take Clint Hurdle everyday and twice on Sundays.

I like Hurdle. ..heck he’s a Michigan guy. But Leyland doesn’t suck, we’ve been to the playoffs not to mention the series twice. Where have the pirates been? Oh ya they haven’t had a winning record since LEYLAND was there 20 some years ago. Ouch

Rick won in Texas 2-1. Again today so far no run support. Rick is not going to shut these guys out so the offense had better get in gear.

We all know Rick can look good then have a 4 or 5 hit inning. Most of which would be hits that are squiggers, squeakers or otherwise bleeders.
Runs would be nice idea.

Great trend of Rick upping his K/9 to what statheads would consider an acceptable level lately. Less chance for the bleeders and bloopers that way, I guess.

Where art thou, oh Tiger hitters, where art thou? Make Gomez pitch. Only 62 pitches in 6 innings? Enough of these first pitch outs.

atta boy rick!

Barnes DRS:5

We got anyone in the pen better than Rick for the 9th?

Wow? Gomez is gone?

Some interesting substations here in the 8th. Not sure I understand them…completely.

Jim using more imagination than usual. Still got Victor as an emergency catcher. Lose the DH, but that’s no big deal in an extra inning game.

Pirates, are among the top three bullpens in MLB.
Neither I, Peña for Kelly forcing a possible entry to catch by VMart if there an injury

true about their bullpen but i think the tigers have a better chance to end the game with 1 swing of the bat tonight

bigtime game tonight. lets get these bats going boys!

Great job porcello. I knew he had it in him. Its just to bad that hes not gonna get a decision after pitching the game of his life. Just imagine how scary our rotation would be if rick pitched like this for the rest of the year.

Cmon cabby send us home please

I mean fielder. Hes do for one

Oh no r u kidding me. Couple years ago that ball would of been gone. He just doesnt have that hr power anymore. Gotta start hitting the weights a lil harder.

Someone jeez

I guess I can lower my upraised arms now. I thought Victor had that one out.

Me too. My arms were way up. Lol

Coke?

PH so no

I hope it doesnt come to that

Nothing against ortega or putkonen etc. but we need to find a good experienced reliever for our bullpen. Were relying to much on young inexperienced arms. Smyly is young to but i consider him a veteran the way hes pitching. Hes been a savior in our bullpen and i trust him more than anyone in the pen except maybe benoit and they are bout even.

Speaking of such anybody here any recent news about when dotel is coming back. We need our old 3 headed monster back.

We need to put together an inning here. Forget the walk off homer.

Now , a bunt

If he was going to bunt, he had to do it with the first pitch

Well, one way or another. RISP

Now, you cant use 2E

Does it seem like we’re getting a larger than usual number of late night games this year?

6 extras , 7 with this.

Cookie right down the middle by Ortega.

Like i said. We need another arm in the pen.

Im not giving up hope tho. Even tho we gotta face grilli. Hopefully they can remember something about his detroit days and use it against him. We got the right guys do up anyway. Fingers crossed

Dotel is not the answer , he is Coke for Lefties

The game was lost in the bottom of the night.2E was a better option and Dirks failed badly

Its not over yet buddy.

If they …

Dotel won’t be back anytime soon, from what I hear.

As Dan said, he could be done as Tiger

Looks like his age has finally caught up to him.

Im sure the tigers will get somebody. I just hope they dont give up porcello, garcia or castellanos to get him

Torii looked aweful in that at bat.

Come on! Geez

Cabrera’s at bat even worse

21 saves.

Fielder swinging at crap all over the place.
.
Well disappointing and I feel bad for Rick he pitches his tail off and again gets zero run support. Dang.

What a stupid ending! Im pi**ed off about this one. Good night guys. I dont even wana talk about it. B.S.

Okay, got AJ Burnett tomorrow. The Tigers have never hit this guy, even when he was going bad.

I was just going to say the same thing….we Never hit him even when he stinks.

Cabby is slowing down the last few games….Fielder has been slowing down for a while…walking yes but his power has evaporated.

In other news, Jeff Kobernus got his first big league AB tonight and lined out.

Kelly really helped 0 for 2 to get his average to .186. Who needs offense? Let’s pick up Ryan!!!

Dotel was hurting more than helping for quite a while. Plutonium is now our ROCK STAR, until he screws up and the commenters hang his dog something or other. Meanwhile, let’s hammer Fielder.

Thats why we need our 3 headed monster back. Not necessarily dotel but someone like him when he was good. A solid consistent pitcher with veteran leadership that can go a couple innings for ya. We got 2/3 of it with benoit and valverde who are both pitching great obviously.

An amazing game. It was 1:35 going into the top of the 8th. What we saw tonight was the 24 year old that I was afraid we would trade; and we might trade him yet. It looks to me like he has moved to the next level of pitching maturity. Sadly, he gets naught for his effort except for a continuing drop in ERA.
1. The effort of a lifetime. 11-1 Strike outs to walks. All kudos to Rick tonight.
2. Good infield defense from Omar, Jhonny, and the Cabby DP.
3. Alex gets a solid hit. He needs to work on getting into hitters’ counts more often.

Grilli probably relished this one more than any other, because of fan abuse a few years back. He has really become a solid Relief Pitcher. The other amazing stat tonight was Rick’s 8 with 99 pitches, versus Jenmar’s 7 with 72. We just did not force the guy to do any sweating at all. As mentioned earlier, AJ has always been tough on us. We’ll be lucky to split the two in Pittsburgh. Congratulations to Porcello again. It couldn’t happen to a nicer guy. Good morning all!

Is Jordan Lennerton becoming the next Hessman/Eldred?

Jordan has figured out some things at AAA this season. Reduced the Ks and the batting average has improved while he still gets the doubles and homers. He has been under the radar behind first Miguel and now Prince. If Prince or V-Mart land on the DL, will he be the call up???

I will say that I am really frustrated with Prince.
He doesn’t seem to have ANY power to right field. Generally the power has dissipated but when it does show it shows to the largest part of the field between the power alleys, not in them.
At the plate he has become inconsistent with his pitch recognition. His good eye has him swinging at pitches at the bill of his cap in hitters’ counts.
Personally, and I know this only optics after all, I would like to see him getting a little more intense and a little less smirky and friendly on the ball field.
Prince is a high impact player. No doubt. Unfortunately that impact is both positive and negative.. If this guy is not crushing the ball and instilling the fear of god in opposing pitchers then he simply upsets player development.
Miggy, a better 1st baseman is required to play 3rd. Castellanos a promising 3rd baseman is forced to convert to the outfield. Guys like Lennerton have simply nowhere to go.
I admit to a fair amount of over reaction here.
Prince does not seem to pick up the slack when Miggy struggles but rather, tends to join him. This is a player who has the ability to be even more than high-impact. He has the ability to achieve super-star status. He has the ability to motivate and inspire his team and become a leader. But, for some reason he isn’t.
