Sunday’s lineups: Tigers vs. Twins

Ramon Santiago gets a start at short, with Jhonny Peralta getting the day off.

On the Twins side, Joe Mauer gets a day at DH, with Ryan Doumit behind the plate. Opponents are 8-for-11 stealing bases in his 15 starts at catcher. With this lineup, it wouldn’t be a surprise if the Tigers used, say, Omar Infante or Don Kelly to try to create some offense on him.

Omar Infante’s numbers off of Mike Pelfrey, mostly from their days in the National League, make him a pretty easy pick for Beat the Streak.

You can follow the game online via Gameday, watch online through MLB.TV or listen on MLB.com Gameday Audio. Locally, you can watch on Fox Sports Detroit and listen on 97.1 FM AM 1270.

If Scherzer remains among the top 3 in RS with this lineup, he is the luckiest man on earth

You have to watch Kelly. He’ll wear down…………….

Hasn’t our manager just been resting him the last four years??

Wow. I’m sure JL has his reasons. I’m curious what they are.

He already said that he is giving him the opportunity to get his bat on.

Thanx.

Beck said Kelly and Infante might be used to “create some offense.” I figured it would have something to do with that concept.

Avg: 194. Last 7. 182. 2 HR 6 RBI
Avila plays the most demanding position and because he is hitting 168 (4 HR 10 RBI) must share his duties. But the less demanding position is OK with no bat.
2E has no glove but 2E( Garcia), Dirks, Hunter would be a better option.
Kelly is a nice guy, well ,you know how the saying goes…
Avila is paying for the overload in 2011. It was no rocket science to forecast this then.
Jackson is needed ASAP. He has been the MVP runner up season long.

Avila’s overload in 2011 was a big subject of conversation here, so you’ve got that right. Thanks for the reminder of it.

I did no mentioned that before because I did not want to sound like saying” told you so” but I think Avila deserved better then from the manager and deserves better now from the fans. Not here but at tweeter it looks like he will be receiving the Inge-Raburn- Laird- Grilli- Miner treatment soon.

Our line up today?? First, we are almost right in the middle of thirteen straight games so Jhonny or Omar gets the day off. Today it will be Jhonny. Then, the Twins are struggling mightily. Gardy on the hot seat?? Also, the league hits .345 against Mike Pelfrey with LHB going .364. Therefore, our manager will be looking to put LHBs in the line up. Good day for Alex to play and by batting him sixth the manager gets to show some confidence in him . Don Kelly has TWO hits off this guy this year. Enough said. Ramon will also be batting left handed. Our bench will be Tuiasosopo (.340), Pena (.328), Peralta (.326), and Garcia (.278). That’s a strong hitting bench. The challenge will be for our top five batters to strike early and often. Likewise, it would not hurt if the bottom of the order chipped in with a key hit or two.

Jason, sorry, but Rick Thompson has Fielder as DH

Already updated.

Thanks. I missed that when I looked at the lineup in the clubhouse. My bad.

I guess that happens when:”Our lineup will kind of be etched in stone really, except when we give guys days off,”

Tight strike zone…..both pitchers have thrown several pitches which looked pretty good called balls.

Oh ……nice fielding there by Santiago…..NOT! :(

I have no tolerance for a loss today! Go Tigers!!!!!!1

I find it quit funny Rod and Mario are talking about Hicks and when he might get sent to the minors because he is batting .157 (or something like that). But Alex Avila is nearly as bad…..what are they going to do about Avila? This can’t go on much longer.
.
Nice job for Max to get out of the jam…between the pathetically tight strike zone, which I feel cost him those walks and Santiago botching a routine play, he did a good job although costing him many pitches and probably at least an inning.

Alex is making almost 3 million dollars this year and Laird is making 1.5 million this year and 1.5 million next year. The Tigers didn’t want to give him the kind of deal he wanted, but they wanted what they got with Avila.

I believe Alex has more…but it’s been for the most part lost for the better part of a year. I feel bad for him, but you just look at him and its almost as though he is just hoping he will get a walk. Afraid to swing.?

Dirks really bailed Pelfry out there in the 3rd…..disappointing.

Busy with other things so not following the game closely. Did Andy try to sacrifice in the third with two on and nobody out?? We need to play some small ball against the Twins and Indians.

Nope…..just a weak ground ball to second

Are the Tigers slipping into one of their hitting funks? Two runs yesterday and only one hit so far today.

Finally Prince hits. He’s been stuck on 9 and 41 a long time. VMart can’t seem to get much into a gap. Alex…..

Does the first team with three runs win today???

Dirks has got to hit the cut off man……..this team just rarely does it…I guess because we continually get thrown out at home we think we can also throw guys out at home.

If you cant help with the bat, help with the glove. Or not…

I guess we are playing the ever changing strike zone game today?
.
Making things pretty easy on Pelfry today quickly and quietly for the most part.

Nice play by Miggy.

Pretty surprised at the fact we only have 3 hits….although when you have 3 guys in the lineup batting below 200 in the lineup it’s not good.

A hit with bases loaded? I did not know that was legal

Kelly “created some offense” by yielding to Garcia.

Nice inning!

QS. But vintage inefficient Max

I am confused. Could you explain?

6 innings,a lot of pitches. He was going more innings this year than his usual 6

I see. I know he is averaging the most innings per start of any of the guys in the rotation this year.

True. And the last thing we need is him regressing to his normal IP/GS

I guess leaving Smyly in is the right decision, however if Verlander is crappy again we won’t have a long guy.

Another umpire with a horrendous strike zone. Certain pitches were called strikes, and then they weren’t. At least THAT fact was consistent. Ironic that MLB wants to “fix” everything but won’t address the balls and strikes, which is the crux of the game.
It was a bad feeling game for a long time. I thought we’d blown the series yesterday. Great time for Avisail to get that triple. The right guy at the right time.
I see more outfielders air mailing the cutoff man these days.
And finally, Delmon Young is actually trending on Twitter…….for his poor play. Lots of good one-liners there.

Really… Kinda surprised about DY. I read he was rounding into form from his surgery and had a nice week or so with 2 HRs and a Web Gem for a throw from RF. I also read he drove in the winning run from first last night.

Afraid not. They’re talking about Delmon Young. Go to Twitter and enter his name in the search box. All I’m saying is that Delmon was trending for awhile this afternoon. People can be cruel.

I am now watching MLB and a misplayed throw to the plate today from MICHAEL Young was featured. Like I said, I’m surprised about negativity regarding DY. The article I most recently read was entitled “Delmon delivers in Eighth as Phils Top Nats” by MLB columnist Zolecki.

Might the Twitter activity be about Michael’s play from earlier today?

Trying to put this comment in a the correct place. Sorry. I’ll paste it here:

Nice win today. Beat the one’s you are supposed to beat, and every thing takes care of itself. Was thrilled by the base hit for Alex, albeit a blooper. He needs every break in the world to get it going. Max’s start was rather dull. Didn’t elicit an enthusiasm from my end; didn’t pitch poorly, although he walked three. Kudos to Torii for #299. Three nice things happened in this game:
1. Minus the Santiago blunder, there were three really good defensive plays today(Dirks, Victor, and Miggy).
2. For the second game in a row, the Bull Pen did a good job. Too many walks, but no hits.
3. Dirks had a solid 9 pitch at bat in the fifth. It’s what you want from your lead off man. Grind em out at bats. He made the out, but still saw 9 pitches.

Pittsburgh rolls into town tomorrow. These next two will be tough, but it’s time to get on a nice roll like Cleveland has lately. Good evening all! Thanks to all our bloggers who were veterans. We owe you Big time!

Thanks Greg.
And Cleveland blows a 3-run lead in the 9th to lose as Chris Perez is injured.

Pittsburgh going Liriano, Gomez, Burnett, and Locke. L-R-R-L. So we miss Wandy Rodriguez. Any news on the return of AJ?? Garcia has missed enough PT.

Knobler:”Only closers with at least 10 saves, no blown saves: Grilli, Rivera, Mujica, Balfour, Janssen.”
