Nice line up for a Wednesday afternoon game. Did you know the Tigers have scored the most runs in the majors and only Atlanta has allowed fewer runs? Seems like we should have 30 wins! Go Tigers!

Our first eight hitters have combined for a .308 average for the season. Avisail has been hitting quite well at Toledo. Let’s see what they do today. Focus on the win. We are in the process of a Texas two step. Houston this afternoon and on to Arlington, Texas for the Texas Rangers who sport a 24-14 record.

Unusual lineup. Infante can handle leadoff but I am surprised JL didn’t reverse him with Avi. I do think it wise not to put too much undue pressure on Garcia by batting leadoff..
Nice to see Pena in there again. I hope he goes 4 for 4.

well if balls were leaving the yard in detroit – then in texas i’ll bet they don’t. baseball is ironic like that.

It typically seems like when we get to. “So called home run hitters park “. We don’t really hit many?

YEA PENA!

Boy is Max getting squeezed here early on. Other guy better have the same. First two batters four ball/strike calls I believe were erroneous

holy meatball, max!

Good job Avisail.

Avi! Did you see Cabraras reaction was priceless

garcia extends on that hanger at his first PA in the show. impressive!!!!!

I don’t agree with the balk call.

nor did i

Well I admittedly have a hard time picking up what is or is not a balk. But of Rod and Mario don’t see it well then?

neither did dan or jim

well if max keeps this up (bad release point) then lets bring in Drew for 35-45 pitches. He pitched 38 on the 11th.

get him outta there skip what are you waiting for?

Going to Texas for a long series my guess is that he needs more out of Max.

Boy this umpire is bad. Max also not so great today.

I will extend on this later but Jhonny has a high Babip 30 plus over his career while VMart , Dirks and Avila are way too low.
Avila was good last year, 350 OPB is very good for any position but especially for a catcher. His Babip was unusually high in 2011. He was projected as 250-270 with some pop. Any over that is a premium

ouch – rough game for Max today – glad to see again our back up guys getting some good hits – Garcia and 2E – looks like we need a few more

well i guess i was wrong – max just went out there and gave us two good innings. Our bats are going today – their bullpen is hurtin – i think we still take this game! Roll Tiges.

thanks for listening 2E! A new game!!

2E has not disappointed

lets get more into that bullpen! I’m hoping for more runs lets get these bats red hot before going to texas!

fielder 279 for the season.Last 10 , 250

He and Hunter have both cooled off a bit

thank gawd omar and jhonny have gotten hot in their place

Now it’s time to get him out. Losing some command

Looks like Cleveland will win.

might be nice to get some work for Smyly, Downs or Coke yet today

pena is making a case for a platoon.

Pena seems to have a great arm! Doing a few things better than Alex at this point in time.

Edgar Gonzalez looks like just the pitcher i was hoping to see come outta that pen.

and a good hit for omar

Okay time for the big boys to put their big boy pants on and get Max a chance at a win.

Big boys apparently left their big boy pants at home today!

maybe, garcia borrowing them today

Jeez Omar. ….nice screw up

i feel very good with drew out there right now.

wooah he pulled Drew! I guess those were high stress pitches….I think bringing in AL AL is a pretty good idea. he just has to do his job and NOT WALK PEOPLE.

I don’t know I don’t have a lot of faith in Alb to strand inherited runners. Well he surprised me thankfully

Al Al got out of that one GK, but i agree with you. to me he is more flash than substance. appears he only cares about K’s and doing his little strut around the mound. problem is he has “great stuff”, which I guess allows him to justify himself. maybe it just takes a few years to mature, but if he had just a little brains to go with that arm, he’d be unstoppable. just my opinion.

He definitely shows flashes and looks unhittable at times.

I’ve never quite liked that your not really swinging but trying not to get hit in the head but it’s a strike for dome reason. Fielder though has only been getting on base if he walks or gets hit. Not hitting hardly at all

Only 3 hits in the last 6 games. Not good enough.

Lovely a leadoff walk.

And a double….Phil not always good with inherited runners either.

Well this will be a tough task but the right part of the lineup will be in…and yes I know it is the bottom of the lineup but the top has been bad today.

I’ve missed the whole game doing personal things that had to be done and it was tied last time I checked, This is their last chance right here.

Andy won’t be the hero today.

Got lots of faith in Omar.

And I have faith in the big fella!

Damn I thought that was gone.

D**n!

Pitchers weren’t close to good enough today. 2-5 weren’t very good either.

Well it sure is hard to win 7 games on another team.

Max just gave up too much today and the bullpen couldn’t hold it. JL pinch hit Kelly for 2-E? The old lefty vs righty theory even though 2-E’s BA is 100 higher than DK. Miggy proved it’s a game of inches in the last at bat. Now comes the tough games.

Ah my friend Evan, you have spoken the truth.Regardless of how bad a team is, it is mighty tough to beat them 7-7. Clues along the way indicated that it might be naught for us. Three walks from Max, to lose the lead, get it back, and then lose it again, were all red flags that it would be tough to sweep a second time. The Omar pick off, all the lazy flies to center field, and then Al’s walk in the 9th. spelled the end for us today. Cudos today to Garcia, T-Soap, and Pena. The big guys just did not come through. Coke always gives up the one hit that sinks us. This is baseball. And remember, 3 out of 10 gets you into the Hall of Fame. That means Miggy is going to come up short, 6.5 times out of 10, on getting that magical hit. Boy, have we been spoiled over the last few years. There were three things that I did like in today’s game:
1.Pena made two great pegs to second to throw out potential runs in scoring position. Better watch Alex, this was your advantage over Brayan.
2. T-soap’s three hit day. He made good contact. Has really proved to be a plus signing. Props to Al Avila for getting him.
3. Pena’s 9 pitch walk in the bottom of the ninth with one out. We eventually had a chance to tie or win.

Texas awaits. 2-2 would be a great moral victory. Good night all.

The positives: 2E, Pena and garcia all looked good at the plate. Pena also did a great job defensively.
Negatives: walks, and one bad inning for Max.
2 out of 3, nice boune back series after the disappointment vs Cleveland.

There was no reason to PH Kelly or Dirks there.
Coke is a LOOGY ,nothing else . Neither RHB nor SW for him

Rondon will be back soon.He needs to pitch (in low leverage situation) in the Majors, there is nothing to learn in AAA.

Im more worried about the 221 and 34 SO for Fielder than about any other hitter.

I totally agree with your opinions regarding Coke and Kelly.

Ya but can you really bring up a guy to pitch in only low leverage situations?

To begin with.In the 6 or 7 inning. Open games. Form then on to the 9th

Another good thing about today’s game: nice weather!
I was thinking that the old Yankees and Red Sox would have taken Jeff Nelson’s nearly non-existent strike zone and turned it into a 5 hour game. I’ve never thought highly of Nelson’s work.
I disagreed with a ton of Jim’s moves today. So many that I won’t even go into it. It reminded me of the good old days, sort of.
We nearly took all 7 from Houston, which I wouldn’t have expected. Mission accomplished with the Astros.

We lost because of the umpires.

The myth of the lead-off walk:

http://www.billjamesonline.com/stats297/

“The kiss of death is when you walk the leadoff guy.” — Leyland from Saturday.” @matthewbmowery
No, it is not.
The harsh words for Albuquerque not for the losing pitcher.:Coke. JL does not like Albuquerque since the “kiss”. Of course, Valverde ´s antics are welcomed back

The L goes for Al´s record but the inherited runner was allowed to score by Coke.
BTW:Coke has options: 3

Neither of them were very good don’t you think?. Yes Alba walks too many guys and the lead off walk is bad. Phil Coke also didn’t need to give up the go ahead run. But I don’t think it has anything to do with not liking somebody. Alba is wild a lot of the time, I don’t think concern there is unfounded. Coke is great sometimes….but other times not so much.

Do you still think Rondon is the answer? He was pretty bad when up here. I’d almost rather (and I can’t believe I am saying this). Putkonen would be my call, he performed well up here this year.

I think Rondon could be the closer before august.
Coke is a bigger problem than Albuquerque right now. Coke and Al2 have the same SO/BB rate: 5 /10 13 /26 257/241 Baa.(Tigers webpage. BR has different numbers.)
This wouldnt be the fist time of a player ending in the JL´s doghouse undeservedly

Maybe but he has to get a lot better ( Rondon)

You really think JL was upset about the “kiss”? Not me. I guess that is what I loved about the ’06 Tigers. I loved the playfulness of Magglio and Carlos. Jim’s brand of ball is too straight-laced for me.

The Blackhawks are relentless. The Wings got a rough road to hoe.

Well, I don’t agree.

In his article about Valverde, Crasnick links to this analysis of the closer:

http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/page2/story?page=caple/080805

“Regardless of the pitching strategy, teams entering the ninth inning with a lead win roughly 95 percent of the time.”
