Friday’s lineups: Tigers at Astros

I’m off this weekend, but if I’m by my laptop when the lineup comes out, I’ll blog it. As luck would have it, I was working on something when the lineup came out with Don Kelly in center field. I’m not in Houston to ask about it, but I’m sure the reasoning will come out soon enough.

As you can see, there’s not a lot of history between Bud Norris and the Tigers, nor between Doug Fister and the Astros. Norris made his Major League debut about a month after the Tigers and Astros last faced each other in the summer of 2009.

TIGERS

  1. Andy Dirks, LF
  2. Torii Hunter, RF
  3. Miguel Cabrera, 3B
  4. Prince Fielder, 1B (5-for-19, HR, walk, 6 K’s vs. Norris)
  5. Victor Martinez, DH
  6. Don Kelly, CF
  7. Jhonny Peralta, SS
  8. Alex Avila, C
  9. Omar Infante, 2B (2-for-9 vs. Norris)

P: Doug Fister

ASTROS

  1. Robbie Grossman, CF
  2. Jose Altuve, 2B
  3. Jason Castro, DH
  4. Carlos Pena, 1B (0-for-6, K vs. Fister)
  5. Carlos Corporan, C
  6. Chris Carter, LF (2-for-5, HR, 2 K’s vs. Fister)
  7. Matt Dominguez, 3B
  8. Rick Ankiel, RF
  9. Marwin Gonzalez, SS

P: Bud Norris

yea i would have thunk to bat him 4th with the luck he has going right now :p

i wouldn’t give J. Castro much to hit tonight.

Sitting one of the the best CF in MLB in the hardest park to field.

Well, got two more games there. But there is an off day on Monday. I think we all know Jim looks for opportunities to play Kelly.

Porcello part of the bullpen today

Next week vs nationals

Hopefully he’s no being sat (Jackson). Because of a nagging injury of some sort. Or I wonder if there is some major lefty/ righty split thing that greatly benefits a lefty batting.?

To answer part of my own question this year the splits are a little drastic, career there isn’t much of a difference between righties and lefties.

Jackson is said to have a slight sore hamstring. iirc Played every game up to tonight.

yea jackson needs breaks from time to time – i’d rather it be against the Houston than a more capable team.

how do people feel about Andy leading off when no AJ? Is Omar better suited for the role? I don’t mind any being there – just curious.

DON!

Donnie and Jhonny coming through. Avila not so much.

idk. All I know is my power is finally back on. No electricity all afternoon. Thought they had yesterday off and missed the game! Caught the re-broadcast this morning. 14 innings….would have drove me nuts. Go Tigers!!!!!!!!!!

Too bad Avila couldn’t get a little time in Toledo.

Looks like a HR.

got robbed.

His 2013, hitting for 400 getting 219

I think so too.

Mister Fister better get his act together.

cool as a cucumber.

I feel like I say this every single day. ….fister got screwed here in the 4th. Ankiel was struck out twice I hate umpires. Luckily he was able to get out of it.

1st and 3rd 1 out. …torii strikes out…..Cabrera pops it up…nothing. These astro pitchers too much. Put up a better fight against much better pitchers last week with Atlanta. Weird and annoying.

i see a CG today

wow alex is so slow!

Pretty sad when it’s such a struggle to score runs against the worst pitching team in baseball.

DUDE these balls aimed at fisters head are starting to upset me

Evan, the man is five or six inches taller than the average pitcher. It puts his head in a position to be a little better target.

Time to get fister out……wasted opportunities and here we are….

good point imma just that phrase in the future

i just tilted back and screamed like a whookie!!!

What a joke! They think they are going to come down here and roll right over them so the effort is lacking at the plate. Worst pitching staff in the game and this is what they can manage. It was embaressing last night and tonight as well.

No E and the game was 2-0

IRS% 3 of 7

The robbed HR and the games 3-3

that’s right!

Yep…after hitting several over last weekend and against Minnie haven’t hit one since tuesday. ( of corse there was the one today by Victor). Power has left em.

IRS% 3 of 9

Time to for the hitters to get their heads out of their butts.

Or not……better to look inept.

lol crackin me up over here GK

They actually don’t deserve to win this game.
I called for Fister to be taken out after giving up the hit to Dominguez after being ahead of him 3-2. I knew he was done. JL didn’t though.
The Astros had a lot of breaks in that 8th but even so the Tigers are not playing good ball.

Look this bad against these last two pitchers tomorrow they are facing Houstons best starter, they’ll probably get no hit.

Okay last chance maybe they’ll remove their heads now???

Wait Avila is due up….he’s good for ….not much.

See reverse jinx!

GONE

Avila

Looks like the extra work by Avila may start to pay dividends. At least he got Fister off the hook.

Second major call umpires screwed up today……hr and Andy was safe.
.
Valverde time

He better keep an eye on him. Tying run

Oh no he walked a batter. Nervous

One more big out

I almost barfed there. Nitroglycerin please.

Dance PAPA!

don kelly and alex avila. oh happy day.

Smyly comes through again. Kelly involved in the winning rally. VV didn’t seem as sharp. How long is it since he pitched? Can’t remember. With Avila I was expecting that game-ending double play but he hit it a ton.

Not how we envisioned it happening, but that’s two wins in the books. 8-22 teams find ways to lose. If the offense can finally come alive, we could sweep the whole thing.
I wasn’t clear on the ground rules for Victor’s homer. I saw it hit the top of the wall with the yellow line on it and bounce back. Is that not a homer? As usual, the biggest issue with replay is the camera being used. Even so, I saw it hit on top in real time and on the final replay look. And I’ll bet nearly every one of you thought we’d lose by one run when it happened. Almost did.
Big walk from Kelly, who nearly always does something to affect a winning outcome.
Now if we can just see the Comerica Park offense on the road.

The ball has to go over the wall to be a home run. If the ball hits a yellow line on top of a fence and bounces back in play, the ball is live and in play and runners may advance as many bases as they can.

To answer your question Jose last pitched Sunday…..so a while.

Donnie -do- it -all!

Obviously nice to see Avila come through like that. That was no cheapie either.
I do have concerns though about the 2 old guys….Valverde and Leyland.
This is a combination of stubborness that I just can’t stand.
JL has it in his mind that he will “WILL” Valverde to become the closer. Valverde stubbornly refuses to give 2 shxxx about base runners. Leyland stubbornly refuses to have a backup plan when Valverde is pitching. Valverde stubbronly chooses to throw hittable fastball after hittable fastball. This move was made out of desperation and we musn’t try to candy coat that. We need a closer, maybe VV gets by for a while, but there is no way this guy will be closing games this fall.
I hate to be cynical about this but VV is not the answer. I hope my assertion on this proves dreadfully wrong. But I don’t think so. He walked the wrong guy tonight and got away with it.
Next time they put this prayer on the mound I hope JL has enough sense to have moved past the mentality of his past and has someone warming up instead of protecting his feelings.

Tonight that would have been Alburquerque and………….is that it? Who did I forget?

VV, AL2 , Smyly. That was the full bullpen

Well, we pushed it to the limit tonight. Winning sure is a lot more enjoyable. You really have to feel sorry for these Astro fans, who really do find ways to lose games. We’ve been there also, so I’m not going to feel sorry too long. The starter for the Astros actually will be a decent MLB pitcher. He’s got better than average stuff.
Our guys seemed to be weary from the 14 innings the night before, Dirks had good swings early, but hit at someone. Miggy seemed a little out of tune as did Torii. But in the final analysis, a win is a win, no matter how you cut it. Through it all, there were three things that I enjoyed about tonight’s game:
1. When Omar looks bad, he looks real bad; when he looks good, he looks like a star. The ninth inning play more than made up for the seventh inning error. Total game changer.
2. Drew’s holding the ship at 3-2, after having two on and nobody out in the seventh. This was the game. His contribution thus far this year has been priceless.
3. Donny’s walk. He absolutely has earned his roster spot.

Hopefully all the prayers for Alex worked. It was the beautiful swing again. Would love to see that swing consistently during a game. Kudos to the great catch by Torii, to Miggy and Victor for the RBI’s, and to Biggy for the three walks. He does make you think about how to pitch to him every AB. A great presence on the team. Now, can we have Mad Max, and Super Justin just put these guys away Saturday and Sunday? Good evening all!

looking back at it this morning – jose seemed to have trouble throwing his splitter for strikes. Seemed almost like his command was coming and going. Twice he threw the 1st pitch for a ball – i doubt that was intended. Fastball velocity around 92 – just noting it.

I am so happy for Alex – he looked like a kid last night, it is ok to smile and be excited every once in a while! Another great victory for us, sure have been making it interesting lately!

The bullpen has been strong for a while. And JV had nothing to do with that. Without Dotel and Coke , has been solid

Game winning homer. Great job Alex Avila. That’s two homers in just a few days. First one to left. Second one a monster shot to deep right center. Hey, Alex don’t yank it. Just hit the ball where its pitched to you. We scratch our heads and wonder why Alex is in such a funk. We have faced seven LH starters and Alex started in only the game against Toronto’s Mark Buehrle. He had a hit off Mark which was no surprise as AA was 4 for 11 off him in 2011 when Alex hit .273 against southpaws. Oh, that Toronto series Alex hit .308 his only good series of the year. This season, as we enter May, Alex does not have one hit off a lefty reliever. Believe the skipper is headed in the right direction as he had Pena PH for Alex the other night. Pena got the big hit but our runner was thrown out at the plate. Pena PHitting for AA must continue. And likewise the skipper must look for good match ups against LH starters for Alex. Will we face Matt Harrison against Texas in a couple weeks?? Alex was 4 for 4 in 2011 off him. In 2011, Alex was 5 for 11 against John Danks and also 3 for 4 against Francisco Liriano. He did well against LHP by killing some pretty fair starting pitchers. The manager’s main role is putting his players in situations where they have the best chance for success. Go Tigers!!!

We get our schedule. Then we play it. That’s baseball. Special note for May. We play these Astros SEVEN times in the next fourteen days. Two hard fought victories over them so far. Can we continue it??? Stay focused. One game at a time. Go Tigers!!!
