Monday: Tigers vs. Twins

In case you missed it, Jim Leyland said last night that Torii Hunter would be off today. With right-hander Mike Pelfrey on the mound, that means a start for Don Kelly. Andy Dirks, meanwhile, returns to the lineup in left field after missing the weekend with lingering soreness in his right knee. Interestingly, Leyland said today he does believe the knee affected Dirks at the plate, though Dirks said Sunday he didn’t want to make excuses.

3 1/2 horrible hitters in the lineup……..terrific

i see that Twins have elevated Dozier in the order while dropping Hicks. don’t know anything about Arcia. Doumit is out this series or day-to-day?
.
would expect Dirks to see more hittable pitches in the 2 slot…wonder how he did last season when hitting 2nd.
.
when Peralta and Infante are swinging it good, there’s no rest for the opponent’s pitching.

295 .356 .445 .801 in 195 AB

Our starting 9 have a history of .417 against Pelfrey with a OBP of .505. So does he have a no-no through five?? We have Scherzer. They have Pelfrey. Let’s play ball. Go Tigers!!!

The current roster vs Scherzer: 267.344 .465 .809

For the last 7:VMart 286/701 .Fielder:125/ 516.

due and extra due ;)

That was a huge mistake.

Tigers playing down to the competition, doesn’t help there are giant holes in the order today. Pelfry and his 7.50 era too much do far. Freaking joke.

Playing down to the competition … it is what we do best. It should be the motto.

So frustrating.

So I am at the game guys was Austin hit? Should it be 2-2

Hit knob of the bat. Might of caught him a bit. But the sound off the bat was very loud. Tough for the ump to not call it a foul based on the sound.

Well just got a run and u give it right back. Excellent

Less speed, less SO, 2 consecutive bad outings

Although Max won his last start he wasn’t exactly sharp then and he isn’t today either

Apparently there is little to no interest in playing today?

Not sharp at all. And the hitters are not battling. Lazy fly balls and weak grounders to short.

That was safe

Or not

A DONNY TRIPLE? Smokes knows his players!

Rally with two out. Get him in AJ!!

Avila is a torture practice. He jumps out at the ball, opens up and frequently turns over. Unless there is a design in place to turn him into a yanker, then Legendary Lloyd needs to get Avila back to the stuff that made him excellent in 2011. Avila needs to stay back, let the ball come to him and drive it to where he has been pitched.

dirks bunts for a hit to get on infront of miggy. baseball player.

Are we getting a crooked number this inning??

starts the rally that gets prince a 3 run homer! great to see prince hit again

When JP hits , his range issues seem not to exist. So it becomes a matter of making the routine plays, the offensive premise upon which the defense was mostly built.

ELTigre, I think you spoke a little too soon about a bad outing from Max.

3 runs in 4 inning was not good . Hit hard.

The big question now is whether to let Max continue. JL obviously has no faith in the pen or he would not have brought in VV yesterday with a 5 run lead so as to nail down the game and a sweep. He knew a 3 run HR could have destroyed the momentum he so much denies.

I totally agree with Smyly here. Results be damned.

I don’t agree with taking him out though.

Like I said, “Results be damned.” Althougth, kudos to JL. It worked and he is the boss for a reason.

Why? he has been perfect again. He deserves to be a starter and is in the bullpen. He deserves to close the game and is pulled out. That is why I dont like JL

My choice was to let Smyly finish it. I didn’t like that Benoit-Plouffe matchup. Glad it worked out.

Dirks had a good game. That’s one full turn through the rotation with good starts (4-1). Yet another 3-run jack. This stuff wins ballgames.

That was a nice win. Max really settled down and gave his team a chance to win. Another QS. 3 run HRs are a beautiful thing. They can mask a rather uninspired offensive effort. But a win is a win. Let’s get JV some runs tomorrow.

3-run homers mask a multitude of sins. They didn’t work their ABs anywhere near how they did during the Atlanta series. Hope that’s a one game glitch and not a matter of failing to take the Twins seriously.

Dan, if you want to see the shut down closer you’ve talked about, check out Kimbrell with Atlanta. 99 mph fastball with movement and a slider from hell.

I thought Max was good. Not excellent but very good. He is becoming something better than he was—-and that wasn’t bad at all.

8 – 3 run HRs this year to lead the league. Playing Earl Weaver ball.

I think we neatly avoided him this last series didn’t we?

While I might agree Drew is pitching well, nobody can say Rick didn’t earn it out of spring and they cannot pull Rick quite yet. And while I agree that drew probably could of closed it out JLwas playing the matchups. By the way something he usually gets killed for not doing on here or letting someone go 1 batter too long. He cant win

I thought Jim got killed for playing matchups too much but I agree, he can’t win. This was a fine example of that. ;-)

Hey!!! It might be fun to lay down your opinions before the damage happens. Take the risk, don’t just react fearfully. It is not nuclear warfare. And sometimes you will be right.

Lay down opinions how?

Before the issue. C’mon. Is everyone reactive?

As the comments allude, Max was not finishing the batters off in the early innings. It’s the curse of Mr. Nobody, of which every team has one. The star doesn’t hurt you, but Morley Fudd hits a soft one to whatever field, and you find yourself down 3-1. What amazed me was that Pelfry was being made to look like old Cy himself. Luckily, Biggy woke up just in time. And Mad Max looked great when you see the final box. An odd game and an odd win, but it sure beats the alternative. Here are my three things that I really liked about this win:
1. No walks or errors by the defense, so the Twinks had to earn everything they got, and it could have been enough. Max the contortionist has really made strides in his SO/Walk ratio.
2. Dirks bunt to lead off the big inning. If he doesn’t get on, the best we have through Prince is a tie. Andy looked really relaxed tonight.
3. After the Florimon single to lead off the fifth, the Twinks never got another base runner. A crushing blow to the opponent.

Maybe Dirks is on now, Victor took a step backward, but the one really needing to get going is new pappa Alex. Thank heaven is a quality defensive catcher, and calls a good game. Somebody needs to offer some sound advice as to what he can do to contribute offensively. Kudos to Donny’s triple. Drew is a valuable piece of property; no one should doubt that by now. Savor the V. Good night all.

Jeez…You sound profound.

what about Don Kelly’s contributions and inserting Andy back into the lineup at the right time? Those are things JL should be getting more credit than he is getting.
