Friday’s lineups: Tigers vs. Braves

Ballpark 001This might not be what anybody wants to hear, the way the Tigers are hitting, but they have a lot of bad numbers against Paul Maholm. On the flip side, there are a few Braves with really good numbers against Anibal Sanchez, which explains why he struggled against them so much as a Marlin.

  1. Austin Jackson, CF (0-for-9, 3 K’s off Maholm)
  2. Torii Hunter, RF (0-for-2, walk, K off Maholm)
  3. Miguel Cabrera, 3B (4-for-13, walk, 3 K’s off Maholm)
  4. Prince Fielder, 1B (7-for-51, 2 walks, 15 K’s off Maholm)
  5. Victor Martinez, DH (1-for-3, 3 walks off Maholm)
  6. Matt Tuiasosopo, LF
  7. Jhonny Peralta, SS (4-for-9, HR, walk, K off Maholm)
  8. Brayan Pena, C
  9. Omar Infante, 2B (1-for-12, walk, 2 K’s off Maholm)

P: Anibal Sanchez

  1. Andrelton Simmons, SS (2-for-3 off Sanchez)
  2. Dan Uggla, 2B (4-for-10, 2 HR, 3 K’s off Sanchez)
  3. Justin Upton, LF (4-for-13, HR, 6 K’s off Sanchez)
  4. Freddie Freeman, 1B (3-for-8, K off Sanchez)
  5. Chris Johnson, 3B (3-for-9, 3 K’s off Sanchez)
  6. Evan Gattis, C
  7. B.J. Upton, CF (3-for-10, K off Sanchez)
  8. Juan Francisco, DH
  9. Reed Johnson, RF (1-for-3 off Sanchez)

P: Paul Maholm

Maholm’s career stats are not very good, but his ERAs and WHIPs have been pretty good the last couple of seasons. This year, the guy has been downright excellent.

i heard there bullpen wasn’t very good. light a candle.

Going to the game tonight……unfortunately I’m expecting to be disappointed, but hoping for the best.

Gk, i hand it to you. true diehard fan. “expecting to be disappointed but hoping for the best.” dont think i could explain my feelings any better. sounds like you’ve been through this before. lol. make sure to rub Ernie’s statue for good luck tonight.

Well funny you say that, I dont rub Ernie’s, maybe that’s were I’m going wrong, but I always rub the statues in centerfield when I’m walking to my seats.

Those numbers look terrible for us. So, we probably win the game.

A test for sure. Braves playing the best baseball of any team right now. Line-up full of unknown names for me. Sanchez has faced many of them already.

Bring them luck GK!

Evan Gattis played Winter Baseball for “my” team here and was behind Mejias for MVP. He has power, hit 15 HR ( and with Mejias broke the mark for two sluggers). The HR record is 20 by Bo Diaz,. Fielder Sr hit 19 and was walked to prevent the tie.
And playing in Maracaibo is even more remarkable.,the ball is stopped in the hot but wet air and by the strong wind. He has a Hamilton like background and he has a similar future,. Beware of him.

We have Reed Johnson in RF tonight because Jason Heyward had an appendectomy this week. So it could be worse….for us, not Heyward.

This same Braves team made a 7-2 Washington team look like little leaguers earlier this month.

they’re due!

I agree with Henning about Rondon but not about Avila. He had a great OBP last year. Two days ago, he worked a walk to allow Infante to hit the RBI single.Schonfield says ,and he is right, that there is nothing to fix in Avila´s approach.
2011? his Babip was way to high,he was lucky

BABIP .211 this year .366 in 2011………maybe more unusual to have a 211 than a 366, right?

Both are unusual. You expect him at 300 something Babip and around 250 avg. That ,plus 350 OBP is above average for a catcher

more concerning about alex is his lack of power IMO….hard to get unlucky with power

A little ,but as our nemesis said , to hit a 3 runs HR you need two runners on base first.
VMart has been hitting the ball hard and far but the weather kept the ball inside once and again.

that’s my favorite part tho – good plate discipline. he should probably take a little less first strikes tho (62%)

” #tigers report they’re actually 1-5 in games decided after 7th. BB-ref had different record. Either way still have to get that bullpen fixed” ?
Jayson Stark twitted

They have at least one win with the 14-inning victory in Seattle.

Thanks. Called my attention two different registers like someone were still working with pen and paper

Nice piece of hitting by V-Mart. Totally agree with Rod about his improved balance after working with Legenday Lloyd.

i have Jays. Yankees. Was he trying to score with a grounder to SS?

Checked,It was sharp line drive

Correct. Tough ball for Fielder to score on. SS made the play on Peralta’s ball.

Thanks. with no outs and first base empty , he was supposed to wait until the ball is out of the infield.

Ivan Nova and Cervelli injured.

Another nice bit of hitting by V-Mart to garner the RBI. The toe tap seems to be working.

Brookens is sooooo aggressive. It worked this inning.

So much for the bad numbers against this hurler.

Let’s give Tui the LF job against all pitching. Play him until he slumps.

Runs…….fun but extremley cold here at comerica

huge crowd, it appears?

Pretty good crowd.

Extremely Cold? It was 65 and sunny in GR at 7 pm. I guess it gets cold fast when the sun sets. 10-0! Go Tigers!

54 at the start of the game but a cold wind as well. I don’t think that warmfront has moved to detroit yet.

Sanchez is among the pitchers with an increased speed so far

He is hot, so rest him.

Tie for his career high at 14

Coke and Alburquerque not available. Keeping bullpen

Better call the bullpen. 116 is enough

POG: Anibal Sanchez!

Under three hours.

17 for 24

Rondon threw some killer sliders in the 9th. You can see where he can be effective if consistent. Good to see.

I watched Sanchez with his 17 strikeouts while switching over to Washington’s Jordan Zimmer who used 91 pitches to throw a complete game 1-hitter. 1-0 in about two hours. Saw two fantastic pitching performances tonight.

Sanchez was something else what a pleasure of a game to be at, colder than you know what, but Anibal was on fire.

I was thinking you’d get to enjoy that one.

ZimmerMAN, typing too fast.

Back over .500. Let’s not use up all our runs in one game then go back into the funk. Peralta had a key AB early and wore Maholm down some.

I agree about Peralta.

yup i remember that too – while working on my car brakes

Rondon-9 pitches with 7 strikes.

Anibal the cannibal ate ’em up at the plate today. Rondon 7 of 9 were strikes – slider looked good. Victor looks back to form and congrats to 2E/TSoap for the RBI.

Per Morosi, the entire postgame interview:
Fredi Gonzalez: “He was pretty good, and we weren’t. That’s about it, boys. That’s all I’ve got for you. You guys have a good one.”

We have faced five lefty starters and KO’d three of them. Not bad.

The sounds of victory in Tiger Town sure sounded sweet. Just a good all around win for the home folks. There’s a lot to like about tonight’s win, but I’ll mention three that are not so obvious:
1. The Cabrera, around the horn double play was a picture of beauty. It showed what a gifted athlete, Miggy truly is.
2. Every starter made a contribution; all hit except Biggy, and he had two walks. TSoap shows his raw power.
3. Rondon has a clean inning, and shows some wicked off speed stuff.

Kudos to Victor, Anabal, Tori, and Matt. Hats off to Miggy for just being the best hitter in the game. Sanchez left no doubt tonight that he’s worth the contract given to him. Good night all.
